LaCroix (00:00):
Do you suppose they celebrate death days on the
other side? Will the day we giveup the ghost be a cause for
celebration in heaven? Or are wejust another log on the fires of
hell? The only extraordinarything about birth, it seems to
me, is that we are no longerdead, which we presume to be an

(00:23):
inferior predicament. Howfiercely we struggle to avoid
death.
How the death of our loved onespains us. How desperately we
hold on. Hold on for dear life.

Matt (00:44):
Brought across in 12/28.

Rachel (00:48):
Hi. I'm Rachel. And I'm Matt. And this is Come in 81
kilo.

Matt (00:52):
A forever night podcast.

Rachel (01:45):
Alright. It's time for another episode. Let no man tear
asunder. Or as I like to thinkof it, last week was Silence of
the Lambs. This week isFrankenstein.
We're going on a tour, a horrortour. It's fine. I don't mind
these things being sort ofreferential. You exist in a a

(02:08):
genre. A a horror genre.
Sometimes it's nice to be, like, callback. Let's talk about some
other monsters. No. Before youask, we are not going to get a
werewolf episode unless youcount the Carusch episode as the
werewolf episode.

Matt (02:28):
Oh. Yeah.

Rachel (02:29):
Yeah. I mean, if you kinda think of Perry got turned
into a vampire and suddenly hadhuman level intelligence in a
golden retriever body, it'sbasically a werewolf episode. It
means man wolf. So Yeah. Notthat golden retriever is even
remotely related to a wolf, but,I mean, they are both canines, I
guess.

(02:49):
If you wanna You're on the rightfamily tree. Yeah. Yeah. Just
real far branches apart. Youknow?
So how did you think about thisepisode?

Matt (03:01):
I would say I have seen this episode the most times out
of any episode.

Rachel (03:09):
I like this episode.

Matt (03:10):
So you put this on, and I thought, haven't we already done
this episode? I've seen thisepisode, like, 3 or 4 times.

Rachel (03:19):
You're welcome.

Matt (03:21):
So I knew that this must be one of Rachel's most
favoritest episodes.

Rachel (03:27):
I like this flashback. I think the present time story is
I mean, it's it's generalizedforever night nonsense. But the
flashback is one of my favoritesbecause, who doesn't like
Garrett Wyndavies and his sassylittle goatee and his black,
like, Victorian era

Matt (03:44):
Everyone loves the polished collar.

Rachel (03:46):
He's got the white cravat, and then everything else
is black. And he's all tortured, but slightly happy. And

Matt (03:53):
He's he he's begun his journey of self improvement.

Rachel (03:57):
Yeah. But he hasn't quite sworn to never kill anyone
ever again, which he's totallyWith his kids. About. Yeah.
Exactly.
Alright. So we start with, awoman in a tattoo parlor, which
this looks like the mostsanitary tattoo parlor I've ever
seen in my life. No wonder shehas hep a.

Matt (04:21):
I was gonna say that.

Rachel (04:24):
She's in sip and hep a.

Matt (04:27):
Did any of the writers or actually we don't maybe that's
why Garrett is a never nude.

Rachel (04:35):
Why? Because he's covered in tattoos.

Matt (04:40):
Anyway, I wonder if anybody on the production or,
like, writing staff or whateverhad had a tattoo? No. Like, do
you know do you know what that'slike? No. Have you seen it
happen before?

Rachel (05:01):
And I'm pretty sure he pey is treatable. Like, you can
get it, and then you can get ridof it. It's like a sickness. It
is. It's like a really bad foodpoisoning.
Yeah. I looked it up right now. There's fewer than 20,000 cases
in the US every year. It'spreventable by vaccine, which I
know because I'm actuallyvaccinated against hep a. Yeah.
It's treatable by a medicalprofessional. It requires

(05:23):
medical diagnosis. It spreadsthrough contaminated food and
water. I did know that. Shortterm resolves within days, 2
weeks.
So maybe they meant hep c? Hep cwould be more believable because
it's treatable now, but in thenineties, uh-uh. You had it.

Matt (05:38):
You got it. It's only curable in the last few years.

Rachel (05:41):
Yeah. And you did get it through, like, contaminated
tattoo needles, which I'mguessing is the implication
here, which is just theshittiest ass tattoo I've ever
seen in my life. It's like ablack smear on her back. Like,
that's gonna heal into one solidcolor. That is Yeah.
That's gonna be. Not that I havea ton of tattoos, but, like, I I

(06:02):
don't know. I like tattoos. And

LaCroix (06:04):
You're a

Matt (06:04):
fan of tattoos?

Rachel (06:05):
Yeah. And they kind of soften over time. You know, if
you have straight lines, theysort of because your skin is
like, what's this shit? And itjust sort of, you know, relaxes
a little. Anyway, she's gettingthis kind of phoenixy looking
bird tattoo with, like, as he'sfilling it in with a single
needle, which just sounds likemasochism, because it's like

(06:25):
filling it in with an extremelysharp pencil when you absolutely
have access to whole asscharcoal sticks.
You could just, you know

Matt (06:34):
Yes. Shade it in.

Rachel (06:35):
Shade it in. Anyway. Whatever. But she's gripping
this rot, and Matt goes, is thatmetaphorical? Because she's like
yeah.
The first man handling this rod.

Matt (06:47):
Shot is just we see her with her hands on this metal rod
just kind of, like, squeezingand twisting Yeah. And making,
like, ambiguous facialexpressions. I was like, is this
another porn episode?

Rachel (07:06):
No. No. That would've been funny. Now it's her getting
a tattoo in the middle of thenight at a place that has a sign
out front that's like freetattoos.

Matt (07:17):
Yes. That's what it feels like.

Rachel (07:21):
I in my notes, I said, this is the fakest tattoo artist
I have ever seen. He's got thismachine, which is fine, and he's
tattooing with a single needle, which is a choice. And then he's
like, I'm out of ink. Like, there's a dispenser.

Matt (07:38):
Like, there's a cartridge up in the machine above the
needle, like like a ballpointpen.

Rachel (07:44):
Except this needle is clearly like a a single needle
with, like a motor on the end ofit plugged in?

Matt (07:54):
That's a reasonable looking tattoo machine.

Rachel (07:58):
There's no reservoir for ink. It's not like a pen.

Matt (08:01):
Right. You dip it. It's like a a quill.

Rachel (08:05):
Yeah. Or like a fountain pen. Yeah. You dip it in there.

Matt (08:07):
You have to dip it Yeah. In something, and then you
tattoo, and then you dip andtattoo.

Rachel (08:12):
Dip and tattoo. Correct. Which makes me think they were
like, has anybody gotten atattoo and nobody raised their
hand and they're like, fuck it.We'll fake it. It's fine.
Like, guys, there's a tattooyour imagination. Should we go
to a tattoo parlor and see whatit looks like? No. Fuck it. It's
fine.
Just do it again too.

Matt (08:28):
Still image of a tattooist?

Rachel (08:32):
Where's the Oh, yeah. Where's the ink coming from?
Well, must be in the gun orsomething. Okay. So, like, he
could run out of ink.
Yeah. Theoretically, he couldrun out of ink. That's fine.
It's fine. And I in my notes, Ialso said, is it the music or
the needle making her sweat?
Because the music is I like thiskind of music in, when I'm
watching, like, a martial artsmovie. Like, in hero, there's

(08:53):
the scene where they have thewhole epic showdown to that, I
forget what that instrument iscalled. The sort of, like,
warbling string also. Yeah. Andthat's what's playing in the
background, and it's like

LaCroix (09:08):
We're just

Matt (09:08):
amping up the Asian vibe.

Rachel (09:10):
I guess. I mean, it's fine. I don't hate this music. I
don't know that I would wannaget tattooed to this music.
That's what I'm trying to say.
And the gun runs out of ink, andhe has to cook it more A lot of
ink. A lot
of ink. In this perfectlysterile tattoo parlor where he
just lays the he lays a piece ofcloth directly over her tattoo,

(09:32):
which for reference is an openwound. And then he's like, I'll
be right back. So he goes to theback. And while he's back there,
synth music starts playing.
It's like You gotta throwattention to the wall. Go down,
and this guy gets hit frombehind. Like, shadow. You see

(09:54):
the shadows of him getting hitfrom behind. And then he gets
knocked out, and somebody comesback out and sits next to her
and, like, runs his hand up herleg towards her butt cheek.

Matt (10:07):
I would say this would qualify as groping.

Rachel (10:11):
Yeah. Yeah. She definitely gets groped. But the
weirdest part is she isn'timmediately weirded out by it.
She's like, oh, you're back.
Oh, are you looking for thetattoo? Oh, it's on my lower
back. You're

Matt (10:21):
on my butt cheek.

Rachel (10:23):
And then she's like, oh, wait. This is too much. Finally,
it's too much, and she turnsjust in time to get hit in the
head. And

Matt (10:31):
And we get some blood makeup.

Rachel (10:33):
Yeah. Yeah. She actually

Matt (10:34):
I was a little surprised by that because we don't

Rachel (10:37):
We don't normally get of We get, like, artisanal drips.

Matt (10:41):
But this Usually, it's like brown old blood stains.

Rachel (10:44):
Well, I mean

Matt (10:44):
But we don't get a lot of, like, fresh blood makeup.

Rachel (10:47):
Yeah. In the hearts of darkness episode, when she kills
the guy in the hot tub, there's,like, blood leaking into the hot
tub. But you're right. We don'tget a lot of oh, I got hit over
the head and my face is bleedinglike a face wound would. Yeah.
Yeah. And he carts her away. He,like, puts her on a I don't
know. Whatever. Carries her out.
Sticks her sticks her in

Matt (11:07):
the back. Throws her in the back of his van.

Rachel (11:09):
And then we cut back to the tattoo sign, which has a
picture of a pierced heart. Dowe think that's a metaphor for
what this episode is gonna beabout?

Matt (11:20):
I don't think they thought that deeply about anything.

Rachel (11:22):
I think they were like, what is the universal symbol for
tattoo? And they were like, Idon't know. Like, the heart
thing with a mom on it? Andthey're like, yeah. Sure.
That sounds absolutely right.Let's do that. Even Asian tattoo
artists? Even Asian tattooartists? Stick that shit

Matt (11:33):
out there. In America.

Rachel (11:35):
They're they're tattooing like Americans, aren't
they? You're right. They're notin America. Of North America. In
the country.
Okay. Well, I don't do do wewanna give a my niece story
today? I feel like she needs tobecome a a recurring character.
I'm not sure

Matt (11:50):
why not.

Rachel (11:50):
Because teenagers are plucky and funny. My She was
laughing at it. She didn'tunderstand why she why it was
funny, but she was laughingalong with everybody. We were
playing a trivia game as afamily, and one of the questions
she got was, who did America buyFlorida from?

Matt (12:07):
And she was What country?

Rachel (12:08):
What country? What country did America buy Florida
from? And she was, like, webought Florida. And I was, like,
yes. We bought Florida onpurpose.
And she goes, what country?North America. Like, North
America is the country. So ifyou're wondering about the
quality of American schools, Ijust want to throw that out

(12:29):
there. She thought North Americawas a country, and that we could
have purchased it direct.
Like, we contacted Mother Earth.Right? Like, we summoned the
spirit of North America, and wewere like, can we give you a

Matt (12:39):
How much cash do I need to give you?

Rachel (12:41):
They were like, Florida, free. 50 So, anyway, she also
apparently dislikes England andEnglish people, and we were
given a 30 minute dissertationon how she finds the British

(13:04):
accent, problematic. And I justwanna be like, do you only watch
American TikTok? Are you notexposed to do other accents in
your endless hours of scrollingTikTok day after day?

Matt (13:17):
That that's supposed to be one of the side effects of,
like, globalization and, like,Internet access Yeah. Worldwide
is the youths just, like, consistent low level exposure to

(13:38):
all kinds of

Rachel (13:39):
different Yeah. Globalization. Well, I'm here to
tell you folks that that haspassed up my niece. So and I can
say all of that because shethinks we're weird, and she does
not listen to our podcasts.

Matt (13:50):
Not anymore.

Rachel (13:52):
Well, she listened to them to fall asleep briefly, but
now she's moved on. She listensto Joe Rogan.

Matt (14:00):
Oh, no.

Rachel (14:02):
Okay. Wait. Wait. We have deferred we have gone off.
I'm sorry.
We need another podcast calledshit my niece says. Okay. So
we're back onto the intro, whomwe love. I'm sorry if she ever
actually listens to this, butwhich she won't because she
thinks we're weird and annoyingand that we are literally the
biggest losers that have everwalked this entire planet. In
case you're wondering, I'm notbroken up about that.

(14:24):
I literally have no feelingsabout my 19 year old niece's
opinion, but we we do like her.So it was felt felt like I
should bracket that with that. But we go to the intro after
this woman gets shoved in theback of the van, And then we
come back, and it's the Torontoskyline for a really long time.
I was like, wow. This is did weneed to pad out 30 to 60 seconds

(14:46):
in this episode?
Because it was long. And then wego to the crime scene, which is,
of course, in an alley. Becausethey built an alley for the last
episode, why would you wastethat kind of, set?

Matt (14:56):
Yeah. You just switch up the fire escapes.

Rachel (14:58):
Yeah. You take the fire escape out. You take the
dumpster out. Put anotherdumpster in. Put another ruined
car in.
You're perfectly good to go. So,apparently, the woman who was
knocked out had her heartstolen. And, guys, this is gonna
come as, like, a huge shock, butit was done by somebody who
might have had surgicaltraining. They were like, that

(15:22):
worked really well for the lastepisode. Should we recycle those
wines?
Right. Hell, yes. We should.

Matt (15:28):
The last episode okay. This guy abducts people and
taxidermies them. What if what

Rachel (15:36):
if he kept them alive? Frankenstein. Let's do a
Frankenstein episode.Frankenstein episode, in the
past in the past. This isn'tabout Frankenstein.
This is about the illegal organtrade of Toronto. So this woman
was knocked out, had her heartstolen by not an expert, but it
looks like someone tried toremove it without damaging it.

(15:57):
That's what Natalie goes. She'snot I'm not an expert. You
literally are.
Like, you

Matt (16:02):
That that's literally your job.

Rachel (16:03):
That is literally your expertise, one might say.

Matt (16:06):
Your specialty.

Rachel (16:07):
Your specialty. But she does say, this is not
mutilation. It was open heartsurgery. Actually, I think
that's what Nick says. He goes,it's not in mutilation.
It's open heart surgery. Andshe's like, can we say surgery
right now? I don't know. Thatfeels like a leap. And he's
like, oh, okay.
We're sure it's not a leapbecause we just did this. I know
all about it now. It wasn't doneout here in the street. That's
for sure.

LaCroix (16:27):
So it's not mutilation. It's open heart surgery. I've

Rachel (16:34):
got it

Tracy (16:34):
Covered the grounds. No other evidence suggests that the
murder took place here. Ahomeless guy rooting around in
the dumpster found her.

Matt (16:41):
It's still mutilation, just skillful mutilation.
Skillful mutilation.

Rachel (16:53):
Here. And Nick looks around, and he's like, yeah.
This murder didn't take placehere. And Tracy comes over, and
she's like, guys, breaking news. This murder did not take place
here.
That much we all seem to know.

Matt (17:03):
Alright. So the audience has been told multiple times.
Repetition is the key tomemorization.

Rachel (17:09):
Yes. This open heart surgery did not take place in
this alley, spoiler alert. Plus, they find a slipper a couple of
blocks away, and Natalie's like,I've seen this slipper before.
And she just holds it up to thefoot. Of course, she has another
matching slipper, becauseapparently, this tattoo artist
also provides, thematicallyappropriate slippers.

Matt (17:30):
Maybe they were married?

Rachel (17:35):
It's a match. Cinderella has both her slippers. Warm
feet.

LaCroix (17:41):
Cold heart.

Rachel (17:45):
I'm so glad they had this moment.

Matt (17:46):
Is was there, like, was there a poem and we didn't get
the first three lines of it?

Rachel (17:51):
Well, you've heard the phrase cold feet warm heart.

Matt (17:54):
No. God. Well, apparently, in this episode, I have.

Rachel (17:58):
I feel like I'm still plumbing the depths of your
ignorance of classic Americanidiom. But cold feet, warm heart
is like a a phrase. If you havecold feet, you're like cold
feet, but warm heart. It's likea I don't know. It's like a a
verbal poem, like a thing peoplesay.
I don't know that they would sayit in this context necessarily.

(18:21):
Alright. Fine. You're gonnaforce me to look this up. It's
a, it means, like, just becauseyou seem frigid doesn't mean you
might not have a kind, warmdisposition.

Matt (18:32):
Gotcha.

Rachel (18:33):
Yeah. You just don't show feet very if if you don't
show feet. You don't showfeelings very easily. That's
what that means. So there.
Now you know, it's a thing. Theydidn't make that up. I'm not
sure I've ever heard it in thisparticular context. Like, I'm at
a crime scene, and I'm like, well, too bad. She probably was
a nice person despite all thetattoos.

(18:53):
But this brief moment ofconnection between he and
Natalie, forces Nick todisassociate, And so he is
thrust back in time to a verysophisticated looking lab. This
lab is so science, you guys. Ohmy god.

Matt (19:10):
This is so steampunk.

Rachel (19:13):
There's buzzing sounds. There's, those, like, coils
that, like, does that does thatwhat are those called? Tesla
coils?

Matt (19:20):
Or Jacob's Ladder.

Rachel (19:21):
Yeah. There's Jacob's Ladder. There's all kinds of
just, like, this is so science. You can tell. It kinda reminds
me of the episode where he getstaken in by that guy who's gonna
use him for profit and gain.
Remember the episode where he'she thinks he's gonna get cured
because this guy's a charlatan?Everybody's like, this guy's a
charlatan, and he's like, I begyour

Matt (19:40):
pardon. Cure me.

Rachel (19:42):
He asked for money upfront. I'm pretty sure that's
what reasonable people do. It'sperfectly fine. And then they're
talking, and this guy like, Nickis on the table, like, writhing
around, like, oh, yeah. I'mgetting electrocuted.
This is so good. Makes me feelalive. And then the guy walks
over, and he unhooks him, turnshim off and unhooks him. And
then he's like, tech, tech, tech, science, science, science.

(20:04):
It's the most science Babble ysentence I think I've ever heard
on forever night.
He's like, the electrons will goin and they'll talk to the
spooky parts, and the spookyparts will deelectron, and then
he will and Nick is like, thissounds so legit. I'm so into it.

Matt (20:20):
I am 100% convinced by your jargon.

Rachel (20:24):
And then he ends with, and then he will be cured. And
Nick is like, good. That's therelevant part. I don't care
about the rest. And then hegoes, I wish I had your stamina
to Nick because Nick is like hegoes through all of this, and
he's like, actually kinda kindainvigorating.
And so the doctor Hans is like,oh, you know, I wish I had your
stamina. And Nick goes, oh, youwanna be me? You'd have to give

(20:45):
up the women. I I would go that. That is a negative captain.

Matt (20:50):
Straight up lie.

Rachel (20:51):
That is a straight lie. I do not believe Nick has given
up a woman in his entire life.800 year old fuck boy was just
like, well, you'll have to giveup the women. Lie. Lie.
He just doesn't want thecompetition. And but Hans is
like, oh, yeah. That's a hell nofor me because I have a woman, A

(21:13):
good woman. And then he giveshim this, like, the tiniest bit
of blood ever. It's like a testtube full of blood.
And they toast to his lovelyVeronica who has captured his
soul. And then he says, yes, andevery other part of me. And Nick
slash Garrett gets his, maybepatented eyebrow raise.

Matt (21:36):
I know exactly what you mean.

Rachel (21:38):
The every part of you. And then he comes back to the
present. And, was that, like, locker room talk? Was that
Victoria locker room talk thatwe just heard? Oh, has she
captured your heart?
Yeah. And every other part ofme? Because we can't say dick.
We're British.

Matt (22:01):
That's maybe that's why British people are boring and
cannot be funny.

Rachel (22:04):
They can't possibly be funny. I'm sorry. That was
another, nice quote. We actuallyreally like British people. I
feel like I just say stuff, andthen I'm like, I didn't mean
that.
I didn't mean that. I didn'tmean that. Like, that sounded
inaccurate. No. It's we're we'requoting my niece because I don't
know.
She needs to travel is what sheneeds to do. What is it Mark

(22:25):
Twain said that, travel islethal to prejudice?

Matt (22:30):
Yep.

Rachel (22:31):
I agree with that. That's why I'm vaccinated for
hepatitis a, because I havetraveled quite a bit. So when I
went to China, I had to bevaccinated for hepatitis a
before I could travel there. SoI have been around in a
geographic sense. So she KateNick comes back from his totally

(22:53):
related flashback.
We actually get a lot offlashback really rapidly in this
episode where we have kind ofbeen giving flashbacks short
shrift, and then they were like, hang on. This was one of the
primary appeals of the show.Maybe 10 episodes in, halfway
through to the very end of theshow itself, we should bring
back the flashback?

Matt (23:13):
The relevant flashback.

Rachel (23:14):
But it's good. It's good. But Natalie says, I think
they're in the morgue now, andNatalie's like, oh, this lady
had the same blood type as me.AB negative. I have never had
anyone come through my morguewith the same blood type as me,
which is why I am now commentingon this.
Nick's like, god. I know yousaid that, like, 6 times in the
last 4 years. It's fine. Andthen she points out that the

(23:37):
lady has a new tattoo, whichfrom her experience looks fresh.
And Nick is like, oh, a tattoo.

Matt (23:45):
The the artist didn't get to finish.

Rachel (23:48):
Yeah. Maybe it's artistically unfinished,
Natalie. Did you ever thinkabout that? No. You only ever
think about yourself.

Matt (23:52):
No art is ever finished? Have you ever heard that line?

Rachel (23:57):
So she's like, oh, there's a tattoo. And Nick is
like, yes. There's a tattoo. Wego talk to tattoo artists. I
could be a policeman.
I could go interview people.

Matt (24:05):
Trace is like, shut the fuck up.

Rachel (24:07):
She's like, no. No. I know this one. I know this one.
I have a friend.

Matt (24:11):
I need I need the accolades, Nick, because I want
to get promoted.

Rachel (24:16):
Pretty sure all she has to do is ask her dad and she'd
get promoted.

Matt (24:20):
Oh, yeah.

Rachel (24:21):
No. I think it's more just like

Matt (24:22):
to earn her own way.

Rachel (24:23):
She wants to be helpful. She wants to be a good partner.
And she's like, no. I know this.I have a friend who's really
into tattoos.
I know this artist. That's a bigleap to just know she's know a
specific artist. What if thislady had brought in a picture?

Matt (24:42):
There's 3 tattooists in Toronto.

Rachel (24:45):
Apparently. And she's like, it's a guy in Chinatown.
And Nick is like, dang it. I wasgonna do a good job.

Matt (24:51):
We need to ask Meg. Does Toronto have a Chinatown?

Rachel (24:54):
Yeah. We saw it earlier. Remember? Do you don't remember
the China China blossoms or theone where cherry blossoms.
Sorry.
Cherry blossoms. The one wherehe meets the guy whose mother

Matt (25:11):
I don't know. No. No. I mean, like, realtor Ronald.

Rachel (25:14):
Well, I don't know. I guess so. They've it's been in
the episode at least a couple oftimes, so I would guess they
have an area where the primarynumber of Asian people live,
which could be loosely termedChinatown. What

Matt (25:31):
what I wanna know, if if I went to Toronto in the nineties,
and I said, hey. Which way toChinatown to a random person on
the street? Let's say I asked 5people. Would would I be able to
get directed to a Chinatown, orwould people be like, what are
you talking about? Look.

(25:51):
Forever

Rachel (25:51):
night is all about accuracy. I don't even know why
you are questioning this rightnow. Yes. There's a China town,
and we're not gonna discuss itanymore.

Matt (25:59):
This is literally a reference document documentary
on Toronto.

Rachel (26:05):
But the point of this interaction for me is Tracy's
like, oh, yeah. No. I knowtattoos. That's a guy. He's in
Chinatown.
And Nick just looks at her Looksat

Matt (26:13):
her up and down.

Rachel (26:14):
And does this, mhmm, this, like, up and down once
over, which is, let me say, borderline inappropriate?
Because then she goes, no. Idon't have one where you can't
see it.

Matt (26:27):
He did this. He did an even more intense one in that
Outer Limits episode.

Rachel (26:32):
The up and down?

Matt (26:34):
The the lady with the cane. She walks up. Oh. And he,
like, very slowly pans all theway down and then all the way up
and then gives her a hug.

Rachel (26:46):
Well, it's character appropriate in both places. Matt
is referencing an Outer Limitsepisode that Gare starred in. I
think it's the last season, like, midway through. I forget
what the exact actual title is,but, Russian Space Baby. I'm
almost positive.

Matt (27:01):
Tachyons.

Rachel (27:02):
It's the name of the episode. Yeah. So Natalie says
the heart was removed, but shehad hepatitis a, so it's likely
unsuitable for transplant. AndTracy mentions that her uncle
Sonny needs a transplant.

Tracy (27:17):
Yeah. I'm back on a long waiting list. My uncle Sonny
needs a transplant. He's justwaiting for a donor.

LaCroix (27:23):
That's gotta be tough on the family.

Rachel (27:25):
Yeah. The waiting's the hard part. I, myself, am due to
go under the knife as soon as mydoctor can find an opening.

LaCroix (27:31):
That's your bad knee. Right?

Rachel (27:33):
Okay. Okay. I know it's not as drastic as open heart
surgery, but I understand thestress. Yeah. You know what?
They ran out of family membersfor Natalie, and now they have a
whole another a whole anothercharacter whose depth of family
relations they can plumb. Soisn't it nice to know that Tracy
gets an uncle for this episode?

Matt (27:54):
So it's going to die.

Rachel (27:55):
This episode only. But she cares so deeply about him.
She's almost willing to havesomeone killed so that she can
save her uncle, because that'swhat she's doing when she goes
and talks to the illegalworkings. That's family guys.
Yeah.

(28:16):
Ohana means never having to notnever having to say goodbye.
It's like Ohana means family.Sorry. Me and Disney don't
really do each other. Okay.
So Natalie and Tracy are not oh,not Natalie. God. I just said I
looked at my notes that saidNick and read Natalie. Nick and
Tracy are in the car, and Nickis like, I didn't know your

(28:38):
uncle was sick. I also didn'tknow you had an uncle, but I
also didn't know he was sick.
All of these things can be true. And Tracy's like, well, you're
in luck because I just found outthat I had an uncle and that he
was sick when I got the scriptproblems. And everybody loves

(29:03):
him so much, and he's reallyjust a good guy. And isn't it
terrible when people are on thetransplant list, and it just
takes forever to get theseorgans? Why can't they get them
faster?
I just don't understand. Why arethey not meeting demand with
supply, the situation? And wehave actually had a family
member who was on a transplantlist and got a new liver, and

(29:24):
that was, like, 10 or 11 yearsago now.

Matt (29:27):
Mhmm.

Rachel (29:28):
And, yes, it's terrible to be on this list and to wait.
And if you're severe enough thatyou're about to die, he's
probably pretty far up the list. But you still can't kill people
and take their organs.

Matt (29:43):
Maybe maybe Sonny's doctor is not advocating for him
properly. Because the doctorevaluates how how bad you are
Yeah. And then submits that to,like, the board that manages the
transplant priorities

Rachel (29:59):
Yeah.

Matt (30:00):
And you say, oh, they're gonna die in, like, a week if
they don't get a heart.

Rachel (30:04):
Okay.

Matt (30:04):
And then the they get moved up to transplant list as
long as the doctor made, like, aconvincing statement to the
board.

Rachel (30:15):
My shitty Christian Science textbook that I had when
I was homeschooled, I had awhole section about health
insurance.

Matt (30:26):
Your your science textbook had a section

Rachel (30:28):
of health insurance? It might as well have just been
written indoctrination textbook, but it was technically a science
textbook. But they were talkingabout the problems with having
universal health insurance andwhy universal health insurance
is not the solution. And one ofthe things that they talked
about was when you haveuniversal health insurance, the

(30:49):
good of the whole is prioritizedover the good of the one. So if
you are really sick and youhave, hang on, and you have
universal health insurance, theycan just decide that it's too
much work to treat you anymoreand they can stop treating you.

Matt (31:06):
So like the private insurance companies do.

Rachel (31:09):
Honey, this isn't a textbook. I bet that means it
was right. If we haven'tdiscussed my shitty science
textbook yet on this podcast, you need to plumb the depths of
our backlog if you wanna findout all of the gems that were
included in this.

Matt (31:26):
This is the seed for another new podcast where me and
you review, like, section bysection your

Rachel (31:34):
Mom gave it to you. Did you keep it? I think we finally
got rid of it because shedesperately loved that science
textbook. Book. So she was like, this has a lot of good
information in it.
I think she was trying to, like, undo whatever doctorations she
felt you had gotten. And it hadstuff about, like, CFCs were
good, and banning them haskilled people. 2nd hand smoke is

(31:55):
not actually bad for you. It wasit was quite the gem. So,
anyway, back to the, back toanother inaccurate science,
program.
After Nick and Tracy discussedthe uncle that will appear and
disappear like a beautifulbutterfly who lives only for a

(32:18):
day.

Matt (32:18):
Like like a like a firefly slash lightning bug flashing in
the night?

Rachel (32:23):
Yeah. And Tracy's like, yeah. You know, it's just really
hard. It's hard when you have afriend or a family member, and
then, you know, they're sick andthere's nothing you can do about
it. But then you kind of can dosomething about it, but maybe
the thing that you're gonna doabout it is, like, dubiously
legal.

(32:43):
You get it, Nick? And Nick islike, yeah. I think that would
be a tremendously complex issueon which I will not comment. He
literally goes, yeah. They thinkthat would be complex.
And she goes, yeah. But do youthink it would be
understandable? And he goes, almost. And it, like, sends him
into a flashback again. And thisis the one where we meet

(33:04):
Veronica.
We don't meet Veronica'sshoulders because they have left
the building.

Matt (33:08):
They're they're so far below her face.

Rachel (33:12):
It's like somebody took her head and went, yoink, and
just pulled it up 6 inches. Youknow what it is? It's this
outfit. They have her hair upreally high.

Matt (33:21):
Mhmm.

Rachel (33:21):
And then her dress is really low on her shoulders. And
so it just makes the sectionbetween, like, the bottom of her
chin and the top of her dresslook about 24 inches long.

Matt (33:31):
She has Cardassian vibes.

Rachel (33:36):
Cardassian? Oh, yeah. With the, like, shoulder neck
thing. Yeah. Yeah.

Matt (33:40):
They had giant, like, trapezius tendons. I don't know.

Rachel (33:43):
Maybe she's Veronica Gold Ducat. Yeah. So she's
singing. And I just put in my mynotes the neck shoulder
situation. But Nick is in hisblack coat and his white cravat
and his little goatee, andJesus, just spare me.
This is my favorite combination, like, literally ever. He's just
like, oh, she's doing such agood job. And Hans says she's

(34:09):
being courted by every operacompany in London. And Nick is
like, oh, well, you know, sheaccepts or all over England,
actually. And Nick is like, oh,well, she if if she accepts a
position somewhere, what are yougonna do?
And he's like, why would give upeverything that I have and more
to be with her, Nicholas? Like,I'm gonna travel while she seeks
her fame and fortune as an operasinger in Victorian England when

(34:32):
women who perform are consideredlittle better than sex workers.
That's what I'm gonna do.

Matt (34:38):
A a fact that we have established in Nick's history

Rachel (34:41):
Yeah.

Matt (34:42):
When he was wooing the ballerina, and Lacroix was like,
stage performers are

Rachel (34:50):
Are basically sex workers.

LaCroix (34:52):
Yeah.

Rachel (34:52):
And And Nick was like, uh-uh.

Matt (34:54):
Uh-uh. And then LaCroix is like, yeah. They are. Uh-huh.
See?
And then Nick's, like, you'reright. I do know their
reputation, and I thought mywoman was above that. I shall
kill her because of thisreputation. Yeah. But at some

(35:16):
point in the hand wavysimultaneous time period Yeah.
Oh, Veronica. Yes. She's beingwooed wooed by all the opera
houses in Europe or whatever, and there's a lot of people who
want her to come to their stage.Yes. That is respectable.

Rachel (35:39):
Yes.

Matt (35:40):
And she that's definitely a path to fame and fortune and
respectability, even thoughwe're just hand waving. I'm
waving my hands right now.

Rachel (35:52):
Yeah. You are waving your hands. Thank you. Well,
this is why we need to recordourselves so we can see all of
your hand waving hand waving.

Matt (35:59):
So okay. Sure. Let's just pretend that's a thing to

Rachel (36:05):
So she finishes this approximately 15 long 15 minute
long opera song, and then shecomes over to talk to Nick and
Hans, and she's like, oh my god.Did you hear that? I did such a
good job. But, like, I couldtell it was, like, flat in the
middle. And Nick is like, yeah.
No. You did great. Really great. You're like

Matt (36:23):
You know what I thought when

Rachel (36:25):
He

Matt (36:25):
might as well. Was, expounding about how much he
loves Veronica and she loveshim. Yeah. Maybe you shouldn't
stand next to a taller, moreattractive blonde man.

Rachel (36:39):
Oh, poor Hans. That's okay. Women are off the table.
Nick said so himself.

Matt (36:45):
Good point.

Rachel (36:46):
Off this table, but not off of that table or off that
bed or off that kitchen canner.Okay. So Nick goes to talk or
sorry. She comes over to talk toNick and Hans, and then they
head out because he's like shesays, let's go home. Actually, I
think it's Hans.
Hans is like, let's go homebefore they ask you to do an
encore. And she's like, oh,yeah. That would be really
terrible. And so they go out totheir waiting carriage, and the

(37:12):
horses start to, like, shy awayfrom Nick. Although, we have
seen Nick ride horses before andhe's literally never scared
another animal ever.
Maybe this is a particularlyskittish horse. Although
Veronica's like, what's thefuck's wrong with that horse?
He's never done this before.

Matt (37:29):
It's the electricity.

Rachel (37:30):
Is that what it is? He's electric. So so they head out.
Anyway, so the horse is like,oh, no. Shit.
There's a vampire. And so theygo to try to calm not Nick,
obviously, but Hans goes to tryto calm the horse down, and the
horse is like, and, like, rearsup. And so Nick has to, like,

(37:54):
tackle Hans out of the way. AndVeronica's like, let me help.
And so she runs after them.
And then she gets kicked by thehorse and run over by the
carriage while she's, like,graphically screaming. She's
like, ah. Poor Veronica. AndNick is like, we must take her
to a doctor. And Hans is like, damn it, Jim.
I am a doctor. He's like, wehave to take you we have to

Matt (38:17):
take I'm just doctor around.

Rachel (38:18):
Yeah. We have to take her to my lab because it's
because it is the location ofthe most advanced medicine in
England. Well Didn't you see myelectricity? To

Matt (38:28):
be fair, if they took her to the hospital, the they'd be
like, hey, doctor. You need toget over here to help this
woman, and he would be finishingup his autopsy and just dip his
hand in some water and then goup and start operating on her.

Rachel (38:47):
What? No. He wouldn't put his hands in water. He'd
just go straight there. Like, hewould waste that kind of time.

Matt (38:53):
He would just lick them clean.

Rachel (38:55):
We hadn't in we hadn't, surmised the presence of, quote,
corpse particles, which is whatthey called them first. Yeah.
True. He also would have beenlike, oh my god. She got run
over by a horse.
She got run over by a horse. What was the date of her last
menstrual cycle? Could she bepregnant? This is hysteria. Give

(39:18):
this woman some laudanum in theseaside and send her off.
So they go back.

Matt (39:23):
So so Hans has had his hands in fewer corpses than the
hospital doctors Yeah. Recently.

Rachel (39:30):
Recently. So,

Matt (39:32):
it's fine. So she is better off going to Hans's lab.

Rachel (39:36):
Yeah. So they go to the tattoo parlor after he comes
back from his flashback. Andthey're getting out of the car,
and Nick superhears the guy tiedup in the back. And he, like,
darts out and runs over, andhe's, like, banging on the door,
and nobody answers. And Tracy'slike, what?
What's going on? What the shit? What? And he's like, Tracy, you
stay here. I'm gonna go around.

Matt (39:58):
The morning period is over.

Rachel (40:00):
Which means he's finally comfortable enough with Tracy.
He can use go around. So it'smade a glorious reappearance. He
doesn't tell her to go around. He goes around, and he goes
around and breaks in the back.

Matt (40:13):
Right. The he and Tracy aren't that acquainted yet.

Rachel (40:17):
Yeah.

Matt (40:17):
He can't send that far along. But he can't send her.

Rachel (40:21):
Is where danger is. So he's not sending her.

Matt (40:24):
Well, sometimes around is where danger is, but sometimes
he would tell Skanky to goaround so that he could go in
the front and approach thedanger first. True. And around
was the safe place.

Rachel (40:37):
Yeah. Tracy sneaks around. She actually sneaks
around after Nick because Tracyis a good cop. T m t m t m. And
gets caught by, we're just gonnacall him shark tooth necklace.

Matt (40:50):
So in in, preparing for this, the the victim at the
beginning is Melora.

Rachel (40:58):
Yeah.

Matt (41:00):
And this guy is Mel. Why do they have the same name?

Rachel (41:05):
I don't know. They worked really hard for this.
Okay? Don't don't don't fuckthis up. Okay.
So she gets caught by sharktooth necklace, and she's
getting, like, grabbed frombehind slash choked out by shark
tooth necklace, and Nick breaksup the fight. He, like, like,
hisses, runs up, pulls the guyoff, and then he, like,
disappears into the shadows, like, you saw nothing. And Tracy

(41:28):
knocks the guy down, and she'slike, wow. Adrenaline. Amazing
stuff.

Matt (41:33):
Yes. Tracy, let's let's let's not train you to, like,
have an expectation that, oh,no. I'm trapped being choked.
Yeah. And I have the ability toescape this if I need to.
And and the next time thishappens and Nick's not around,
she's gonna be like, why is itnot why is the adrenaline not

(41:55):
working?

Rachel (41:55):
Come on, adrenaline. Work. Work. Work. But they do ID
the guy, and his name is MelPurdy.
And he was hired at the tattooparlor a week ago. And he had
$20,000 in cash and the victim'sblood in his van. They're like,
do you think this could berelated? And Nick is like, I
think so. My my in my policesense is saying this might be

(42:21):
connected to our previous ourprevious thing that was
happening.
And Reese is like, I'll do,like, Reese's judgy judgment of
this guy. He goes, I think he'sa little bereft in the brains
department, because Tracy'slike, why would you go back?
Like, why would you get $20,000and then go back? And Reese is
like, I think it's because he'sa fucking idiot. And then he

(42:41):
goes, let's go talk to thiscriminal genius.
Why the hell did he go back tothe tattoo parlor? He should be
on his way to South America bynow.

Tracy (42:51):
Maybe he's trying to cover his tracks?

Rachel (42:52):
I think he's a little bit repped in the IQ department.
Come on. Let's join thiscriminal genius in the barbie
pit, shall we? And, of course,in the background, the boyfriend
of Melora, who we have nowidentified, is all broken up.
And Natalie's like, yeah.
You know, one minute, she washis world, and now, meh. And
Nick is like, I remember thatone time that that guy's

(43:14):
girlfriend got killed. And we goback to Hans begging Nick to
make her into a vampire, andNick in a uncharacteristic wave
of, like, real forward thinking. It's really interesting that he
is both an immortal fuck boy,but he also has a very firm

(43:37):
grasp on the concept of consent.Because he says the choice of
what to be is hers.
And he never does, well, exceptfor Richard. But Richard is a
Natalie fucking made him do itthing. Everybody else, he's
like, I gotta ask first. Eventhe lady he found, like, stabbed

(44:00):
to death on the beach, she waslike, listen. I can make you
pretty.
I can make you a vampire. Youwanna be a vampire? And she's
like, will I be pretty? And hegoes, yes. And she's like, then
fuck yes.
And he does turn or try to turna wife at one point, which we
haven't met yet. And then theone woman that he bit but didn't
turn, that was actually Lacroix. So for the most part, he does

(44:21):
actually ask for consent. Thisis like forever night is not
what I would call consistentabout very many things. But the
fact that Nick has a at least,at least a committed grasp of
what he thinks is right andwrong is pretty consistent.

(44:42):
And the he does he's not gonnaturn this lady because he can't
ask.

Matt (44:45):
So imagining the scenario where Hans is asking Nick, can
you turn her into a vampire? AndNick says, no. She has to, like,
communicate that herself. Yeah.Reminds me of from, Disney's
Aladdin where Aladdin is, like, passed out and Genie's awake.

(45:07):
And he's like, come on, Aladdin. You just need to wish me to save
you. And so he moves Aladdin'slips. Genie, save me. And he's
like, okay.
Whoop. Says I'm just imaginingHans going to Victoria's lips
and being like, Nick, pleaseturn me into a vampire. And Nick
being like, okay.

Rachel (45:30):
You make a convincing argument. But he says, I'm
losing her. I'm losing her. I'mlosing my lady wife who has
captured literally every part ofme, and he tries to pull the
guard the guilt card. He's like, you know that horse only did
that thing because you werethere.
And Nick's like, we don't wedon't know that. We don't have

(45:51):
any proof of that. And then he'slike, I helped you. Now you help
me. And then we come backbecause Natalie is like, oh, I
gotta beep beep.
I'm a beep beeper. And she goes,my doctor has made an opening
for me for surgery, for that me,that like that like Tracy's
uncle Sonny is only a problemtoday. And earlier, I think

(46:18):
Natalie tried to connect withTracy about somebody needing
something desperately over herelective knee surgery, which
doesn't even appear to beanything serious, just like an
outpatient surgery. She's like, yeah. I know what it's like to
need help and not be able to getit.
And Nick is like, you mean aboutyour knee? Natalie's like, yeah.
My knee my knee is important.Okay? You are important,
Natalie.

(46:38):
You are important. And Nicksays, let me know if you need
anything. And Natalie goes, flowers? And he's like, I'm
sorry. I'm gonna get you those.
That's my universal apology. Andthen she goes, but, actually,
how about a ride after mysurgery? And he's like, you got
it. Just, you know, text me theaddress. And then we come back
to them talking in theinterrogation room, and they're

(47:00):
like, you assaulted a peaceofficer.
You had $20,000 in your truckhidden in your truck. You had
blood in your van, actually. Youhad blood in your van. We've got
you. But if you cooperate, wemight be able to get you a
window.
And the guy's like, you don'tyou don't know nothing. He goes,

(47:21):
the guy didn't pay me. Like, Iwas working for the tattoo
parlor, and the old man issenile. He didn't pay me, so I
just came back from my paycheck. He was already in Nick and Nick
goes, he was already tied upwhen you got there.
Right? The guy's like, yeah. He's already tied up when I got
there. And so they asked him,why Melora? Like, why her?
You know, we found your herblood in your van so that we

(47:43):
know you took her. And Nick andthe bad guy, Nick and Mel say at
the same time, I don't know whatyou're talking about.

LaCroix (47:52):
I don't know anything about her. We found her blood in
the back of your van. Can youexplain that? I don't know what
you're talking about.

Rachel (48:02):
And the guy just looks at him like, shit. And then we
get a

Matt (48:07):
You don't know me.

Rachel (48:08):
You don't know me. We get another installment in the
Reese versus the water coolersaga because he's trying to get
a cup of water, and it doesn'twork. And he's like, of course,
and he just crushes the watercup. And then Tracy's like, you
know, I've gotta contact ofsomeone who might know about the
illegal organ trade, and nobodyquestions this or that they're

(48:30):
not like, wait. You have anuncle in desperate need of an
organ, and do you know somebodyin the illegal organ trade?
They're just like, wow. That'sreally great, Tracy. And Reese
goes, do you trust this person? And she goes, well, no. Not
really.
And I thought that must be theshot.

Matt (48:49):
She's been a cop for, what, 3 months? Or a detective?

Rachel (48:53):
Cop for

Matt (48:53):
a while. Yeah. Detective for, like, 3 months, and she
already has like, she's a she'sjust pulled out of her pocket a
bunch of times. Like, oh, yeah.I have a criminal informant.

Rachel (49:05):
Yeah. Because they call the same informant. It's not
like she met a bunch of people. She met the utility knife of she
met the, like, Swiss army knifeof criminal informants. Okay?

Matt (49:16):
Yes.

Rachel (49:17):
A vampire.

Matt (49:18):
A supernatural Wikipedia?

Rachel (49:19):
Yes. Exactly. Oh, but then we go to Natalie.

Matt (49:23):
Underworld Wikipedia.

Rachel (49:25):
Underworld. Yeah. Yeah. CD Underbelly Wikipedia. And we
go to Natalie.
She's at her doctor, and she'sall, you know, ready for her
surgery, except she's notwearing anything over her hair
because looks really good thisepisode. I also wouldn't have
put a hat on. And the doctor'slike, yeah. I was looking at
your X rays, and it's showingsome additional complications. I
bet your pain is back and worsethan before.
And Natalie's like, it is? Andthe doctor's like, yeah. It is.

(49:48):
And she's like, oh, I didn'tknow. Latest X rays we received
show an additional complication.
I bet the pain's back and worsethan ever. Really? Well, not to
worry.

Matt (50:02):
She literally says an amazing doctor.

Rachel (50:04):
She literally says, it is?

Matt (50:06):
The doctor What? The thing thing that stood out for me the
most is why is there no, like, attending nurse? Why is there
not a separate anesthesiologist?

Rachel (50:18):
Why are we there in the middle of the night?

Matt (50:19):
Why are we there in the middle of the night?

Rachel (50:21):
Yeah. She literally got a text.

Matt (50:23):
Be red flags, Natalie.

Rachel (50:25):
Yeah. She literally got a text that was, like, I have an
opening right now at 1 o'clockin the morning. Hop on over.
Let's get this done. And Nataliewas, like, thanks, because my
knee has really been twingingonce or twice a month.

Matt (50:36):
So we've really established that Natalie has an
MD. Right?

Rachel (50:40):
Yeah.

Matt (50:41):
Which means she did a residency As a doctor. With
living people in a hospital.

Rachel (50:48):
Correct. So she knows how this works.

Matt (50:49):
She should she should have years of experience of knowing
how up like, surgery goes, andshe's not picking up on

Rachel (51:00):
Yeah. No. This is her doctor slash surgery tech slash
anesthesiologist slash X-raytechnician slash, like, all the
things, who likes to work in themiddle of the night because
that's when she's, at her best.Okay? So just let it go.

Matt (51:15):
She's getting a good deal on this surgery.

Rachel (51:17):
Right. And then she's like, okay. Great. So you're
gonna numb my knee, and we'regonna get this done. She goes,
oh, no.
We're gonna fully sedate you.And Natalie goes, you're not
gonna do an epidural. Why inwhat what how can't they would
they do an epidural? I guess itwould depend on how severe this
is as someone who has gottenmultiple epidurals.

Matt (51:34):
How much how much, like, keeping the knee immobile is an
issue? Like

Rachel (51:40):
Yeah.

Matt (51:40):
Preventing muscles from contracting.

Rachel (51:42):
The knee to be as mobile as possible. Immobile. Oh,
immobile. Well, when you're inwhen you have an epidural, yeah,
it ain't going nowhere. Youcould you get strapped down.
You don't get to move aroundwhen you have an epidural.

Matt (51:55):
Yeah. It fully it's it's a nerve blocker.

Rachel (51:58):
Yeah. It stops everything. There's not gonna be
any while you're sleeping.Gotten 2 epidurals. Yeah.
Yeah. I don't know. So thedoctor I wrote in my notes, this
doctor does everything. Is thisa rented doctor? Does she, like,
find her in the newspaper?
Oh, good. Knee surgery? Perfect.I'm gonna give her a call. I did
discount.
Shit. Yes.

Matt (52:18):
She's probably also the physical therapist.

Rachel (52:22):
And so we go to Tracy who's talking to Vashon about
illegal organs. And I love howshe has been so sheltered from
how inept Vashon is that shestill thinks he is

Matt (52:31):
like She thinks he's the expert?

Rachel (52:33):
Yes.

Matt (52:33):
A font of knowledge?

Rachel (52:37):
Even though, literally the person who has saved her
every single time so far hasbeen Nick. And and sometimes
Vashon is present under threat, but other than that, not
necessarily. But she's talkingto Vashawn about illegal organs,
and she's like, I've heard ofthis happening in Central
America. The dreaded Quote

Matt (52:57):
other, quote, bad countries.

Rachel (53:01):
The the murky the murky illegal soup that is Central
America, where they cut people'sheads and hands off, and they
also trade in illegal organs.Because last episode, Nick was
like, I've heard of thishappening in Central America. I
wouldn't expect it to happenhere. The murky, you know, the
murky sublegal area of Yeah.Country of Central America.

(53:28):
And Nick, to his credit, literally goes, why would you
think I would know that? He'slike, just because I'm a vampire
literally doesn't mean I knoweverything.

Matt (53:39):
So in respect to Vashon, I think anytime someone comes in
with a question, his just cannedresponse is, why

Rachel (53:48):
would you think I would know that? I'm sorry. Just
knowing that require effort. Youknow what, Ashley? Sean and my
niece have so much income, and Ijust realized that.

Matt (53:59):
My immediate reaction to any request is, why would you
think I would have knowledge andor skill related to this thing?

Rachel (54:06):
I am none of these things. Do they involve do they
involve drinking or running awayfrom responsibility? No. Then
that would be a negative. I donot know what you're talking
about.
And Tracy goes, well, you're theonly supernatural friend I have.
Like, that's like that. Well, you're supernatural. Don't you
just know these things? And thenshe's like, I'm also kind of

(54:26):
looking because my uncle needs anew heart.
None imagine that Sean. Okay. SoI watch a lot of Korean dramas,
and one of the things they'll dois when they blink, they make
this bloop bloop sound whenthey're, like, confused.

Matt (54:38):
Yeah. They they add the sound effects.

Rachel (54:39):
So I can only imagine that he does, like, a bloop
bloop blink, like, I'm sorry. What? Who? You have an uncle?
Yeah.
You know, my dad's brother'scousin twice removed on my
sister's side is my uncle,Sonny. He needs a heart. I met
him one time, and he seems likea really nice guy. And I'm,

(55:00):
like, emotionally attached tohis well-being. And then
Vashon's like, alright.
Fine. You make a compellingargument. I was listening to
Screed mutter in a drunkenstupor the other day about a
group of doctors who travel backand forth. This is like, who
travel back and forth. This islike Which

Matt (55:17):
week? His brain sent out the request, do I know anything
about organ, like or blackmarket organ stuff?

Rachel (55:24):
Yeah.

Matt (55:24):
And it went it was like, okay. And then he's like, I got
nothing. And then after 6minutes, it returns. Oh, hey.
Here's this memory of screen.
Yeah.

Rachel (55:36):
Here you go.

Matt (55:36):
Oh, yeah. I yeah. Yep. My my search routine hit it. Got a
hit.

Rachel (55:41):
Yeah. Well, he had to go through all of Screed's rhetoric
to find it. It was buried. SixCockney slang rhyming slang.

Matt (55:49):
Ray had his to resolve the rhyming slang.

Rachel (55:52):
Yeah. Exactly. So he goes, he knows about a group of
doctors who travel back andforth between Toronto and Rio,
and they have connections with, you know, the community. And
Tracy's like, what come here, nay? She's like, you know, like,
vampires.
And they help accelerate theprocess of procurement, Or as he

(56:14):
says, they take care of theparticulars. Particulars.

Matt (56:18):
Particulars.

Rachel (56:19):
Particulars. It's the most I can't even say it.

Vachon (56:22):
They accelerate the process of procurement. That's
what Skreed told me. For a fee,an astronomical fee, of course.
They find you what you need and,you know, take care of the
particulars. Find it?

Rachel (56:40):
Where do they find it?

Vachon (56:42):
Do you want me to draw you a picture?

Rachel (56:45):
Particulars. It's hard to say. You can, like, turn you
anyway, it's the most Canadianword he says in the entire
sentence, particulars. So shegoes, they find them? How do
they find them?
And it kinda reminds me of lastepisode when Urs was like, she
has a twin sister. Tracy, youare working on a case where a

(57:08):
woman was kidnapped and murderedfor her heart. Where do you
fucking think they get theorgans from? Organ Mart? They're
like, oh, they're just on theshelf, but people aren't dying.
They were just letting themexpire. It's the weirdest thing.
So we just go buy them up rightafter they've expired, but
they're still good. And then wegive them to you at a discount.

(57:30):
Right.

Matt (57:30):
It's like the expiry expiration date on food and
stuff is a a guideline.

Rachel (57:35):
It's it's a guideline. And so I have to imagine if Sean
does the bloop bloop, blinkagain, like, were we not having
the same conversation? Was Ihaving a conversation and you
were having a conversation andit was parallel, or are we doing
the same thing at the same time?I'm lost. What's happening here?
Because he goes, do you want meto draw you a picture? I like to
imagine he means this literally.Like, he has a like, he has a

(57:58):
packet of restaurant crayons inhis backpack. I was gonna say
crayons. He's like, get me apiece of paper, Jason.

Matt (58:08):
Let me get out my my fancy sketchbook. It's a napkin and
print.

Rachel (58:14):
No. It's like blues glues. Like blues glues. It's
like, you know, they're handydandy notebook, and he pulls it
up, and he holds it up, and helike does the thing with it. He
folds the top paper back, andhe's like, okay.
Now help me draw a dead body.And he's like, we'll put a
circle.

Matt (58:31):
This from an artist named Steve. He and his friend, Doug,
or he and his dog were very goodfriends.

Rachel (58:41):
Right. Remember how he'd be like, how should we draw it?
And he's like, we're gonna put acircle here, and then we'll put
a square. And then he does, like, a gaping hole with blood
gushing out of it, and then hehas, like, a cartoon.

Matt (58:51):
Switch to my red crayon.

Rachel (58:53):
And then he draws an arrow, and there's just a heart,
like, a a stylized heart withblood dripping off of it. And
then he does a little smileyface on the heart, like, see?

Matt (59:02):
And then draw another person with a hole in their
chest and an arrow going intoit.

Rachel (59:07):
Exactly. That's what I'm talking about. Yeah. On this
handy dandy notebook. It pullsout the like, not even the
little crayons, like the giantthe giant the giant kid crayons.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. That are, youknow, it makes it easier for him
to grip. He probably wasn'tliterate when he was human, so
he's come a long way Very goodpoint.

(59:28):
Guys. Okay? Neither was Nick.Mom, and Nick was maybe more
aristocratic, so he might haveknown. But, anyway

Matt (59:34):
He had a duh in the front of his last name.

Rachel (59:37):
He did. He was of a place. So he gives Tracy the
information. He writes it down.He goes, you need to talk to
Enrique.
He says it very That's becauseDid y'all forget he was Spanish?
You're in luck. He didn'tforget. He was like, you need to

(59:58):
talk to Enrique from the clinicin Rio and tell him oh, tell him
that the Enrique from the clinicin Rio sent you and that you'll
pay him whatever. And Tracy'slike, thank you so much for
doing this.
I really wanna save my my uncle, father, Sonny, whoever he is.
And this, of course, is theperfect moment to insert a
liquor monologue. I just thenightcrawler. He's like, do they

(01:00:22):
celebrate death days on theother side? Are you in heaven,
or are you just a log on thefires of hell?
And how fiercely we struggle toavoid death, and how desperately
we hold on, hold on for dearlife. And it's so traumatizing.

(01:00:42):
It sends Nick into a flashback. And this guy At

Matt (01:00:45):
the stop light.

Rachel (01:00:46):
This guy is wailing the fuck on this ice cube. And in my
notes, I wrote that would makeone hell of a martini. But in
all seriousness, he's doing thisbecause he has chilled her down
to the point of, like, hypothermia, and he's keeping
her heart alive, Veronica, with, like, controlled bursts of
electricity, which, like, legit, this all, I mean, would more or

(01:01:08):
less work, I guess. I don't knowthat he necessarily has the
technology regulate electricityin the way that he's trying to
regulate, but it's fine. It'sfine.
It's fine. So

Matt (01:01:17):
It worked in his theoretical experiment.

Rachel (01:01:19):
Yeah. It's perfectly fine. So he tells Nick to go
bring him a healthy heart. He'slike, go get me a heart. And
Nick is like, you have onceagain pressed an incorrect key.
Please press 0 to go back to themain menu. I'm not gonna help
you. And the guy's like, okay. Then I'm gonna stop trying to
cure you. Yeah.
How's that gonna go for you?Nick goes, this is insanity,

(01:01:40):
Hans. I will not be party tothis. And he's like, yes, you
will. And Nick's like, yeah.
Yeah. I will.

Matt (01:01:45):
Dad, you you convinced me.

Rachel (01:01:47):
Because he goes, I helped you. Now you helped me.
Bring me a murderer. He goes,no. You're gonna make me into a
murderer.
Like, he's already a murderer, but it's fine. And he goes, then
bring me a murderer. I don'tcare. And it goes, I'm not judge
and jury. I mean, I'm glad wecame to that eventually.
Right? We all grow. Okay? Youget new information. You
incorporate the new information.

(01:02:07):
You evaluate your past actionsbased on that information, and
then you change. This is growth.

Matt (01:02:12):
This is life. Maybe this was the straw on the camel's
back that, convinced Nick to vowto himself to not kill anybody
with his teeth again.

Rachel (01:02:23):
Maybe this is why he went to the theater. Maybe this
is why he started going to thetheater because he was like,
Veronica could have been here.I'm gonna go watch the theater.
And then he met Sylvain.

LaCroix (01:02:33):
She's pretty nice looking.

Rachel (01:02:35):
Yeah. But this guy is pulling no punches. He's like,
what have you ever brought tothe world but pain and darkness?
How many people have you killed? How many hearts have you
stopped?
Or can you even count them?

LaCroix (01:02:47):
You are meddling where you should not. You're
interfering with the naturalcourse of life.

Matt (01:02:51):
And you never have. How many, Nicholas? How many lives
interrupted to feed yourbloodlust through the centuries?
How much beauty lost? What haveyou ever brought to the world
but pain and darkness?
How many hearts stopped cold? How many fates interrupted,

(01:03:12):
Nicholas? Or can you even countthem?

Rachel (01:03:18):
And Nick stops like, oh, you fucking went there.

Matt (01:03:23):
I told you I couldn't count higher than 7. And you
bring it up now. How rude. I

Rachel (01:03:32):
thought we were friends.

Matt (01:03:42):
I gotcha.

Rachel (01:03:46):
I know you've been sitting on that one for a while,
so you're welcome.

Matt (01:03:51):
Oh, no. My inspiration was you talking about Veshan being
illiterate. And that, oh, maybeNick was innumerate.

Rachel (01:03:59):
I love I love it. I love it. I love it. Because that that
moment is so dramatic. And Ilove that moment, because he
stops, like, you fuck youfucking what?
Like, I told you that inconfidence. I didn't think you
were gonna use that against me.And so it's this beautiful
moment of, like, you know, wedon't talk a lot about how Nick
is actually a serial killer, butNick is a fucking serial killer,
and this guy brings it up. Andthen you just took it, and you

(01:04:21):
made it a really happy thing. And I'm just really, really glad
that we had this momenttogether.
But he tries to leave. He'slike, oh, I can't believe you
triggered me like that. He triesto leave, and he ends up getting
solicited by this woman on thestreet. And he's like, actually,
you know, I've given up womenrecently. And so she stabs him.

(01:04:41):
She's, like, then I'll take yourgold then. And she stabs him in
the back, and he's, like, then Itake your life, and he turns
around and bites him.

Matt (01:04:48):
So I was thinking okay. So Hans is like, in in theory,
according to the principles ofquantum mechanics right?

Rachel (01:05:01):
Yes.

Matt (01:05:02):
I could take out her heart and put in somebody else's
heart. And as long as I sewedthings up correctly, it would
work.

Rachel (01:05:10):
Yeah. This is like that guy that would take heads off of
other animals and put them onother bodies So to the section.

Matt (01:05:19):
We know now that when you do a transplant, you have to
check some things first.

Rachel (01:05:24):
Yeah.

Matt (01:05:25):
Like Blood type. Same blood type.

Rachel (01:05:27):
Yeah. There's Hepatitis a.

Matt (01:05:28):
There's a there's a few different, like, compatibilities
other than blood type.

Rachel (01:05:34):
She probably had, like, 6 different kinds of syphilis.

Matt (01:05:39):
It has to be disease free.

Rachel (01:05:41):
Yeah.

Matt (01:05:41):
Otherwise, that person is going to get the disease.

Rachel (01:05:44):
The disease. The disease. The condition, capital
c.

Matt (01:05:49):
T c.

Rachel (01:05:50):
Yeah. Terminal condition. Terminal condition.

Matt (01:05:55):
And the the chances that just a random woman that Nick
grabs off the street is going tobe a Compatible. Compatible
donor.

Rachel (01:06:05):
It was pretty slow. Pretty low. But 1 in 8,
actually.

Matt (01:06:08):
Let's take into consideration. Nick can smell
the blood.

Rachel (01:06:14):
The blood. Yeah. But he didn't go after this woman in
particular. He was just like, fuck you. You stabbed me.

Matt (01:06:18):
Okay. Okay. So she's she propositions him. He declines.
She stabs him, and Nick's like,I'm about to cut this bitch.
And then he's, like, smellingher. Oh, she smells a lot like
Victoria. Maybe I can kill 2birds with 1 stone.

Rachel (01:06:39):
Literally.

Matt (01:06:40):
I can I can, avenge my inconvenient shoulder cut?

Rachel (01:06:50):
Yeah. That was my favorite coat. You bitch. Woman.
Yeah.

Matt (01:06:55):
And I can make amends with Hans Yeah. At the same time.

Rachel (01:07:00):
So many birds. This feels so efficient.

Matt (01:07:02):
He's like And if the woman had not smelled so much like
Victoria, which smelling likeequals compatible organ donor.

Rachel (01:07:10):
I feel like this is fine. Let's do that. That's
good. Everybody would havesmelled like disease, so
perfectly fine. He gets snappedout of this flashback by some
honking because he's in the car,and he's disassociating in the
car again.
And it turns out he's heading tothe hospital to look at the
organ transplant list becausethere's a good chance that
someone on the list might know, because the only people who

(01:07:33):
could possibly get this heartare in Toronto. That doesn't
matter. So, Natalie, we comeback to Natalie. Remember
Natalie? She's all drugged andvulnerable at the hospital
again.

Matt (01:07:46):
Come on, Natalie.

Rachel (01:07:47):
This is how you get trust issues. Do you want trust
issues? Because this is how youget trust issues. And then we
cut to the exterior, theapartment building exterior, the
everything exterior. This is theresidences exteriors.

(01:08:08):
This building. And it is the nowthe outside of the clinic where
they apparently traffic inillegal organs because Tracy has
gone there. She must havementioned NVJ.

Matt (01:08:18):
It just looks like a house on the outside, but inside, it's
a full, like

Rachel (01:08:22):
Medical. Medical sleep. Correct. It's deeper. Bigger on
the inside.
It's like the Tardis. So theguy's like, miss Better, exactly
what it is what is it that youthink we do here? Because she's
like, I have an uncle. His nameis Sonny. He's a cop.
I'm a cop. My whole family iscops, but we want you to get us
an illegal organ, and this isnot a setup. And the guy's like,
really? Because it kinda feelslike a setup. But she mentions,

(01:08:44):
like, I will pay anything.
My family will pay anything. Didshe consult her dad? Was she
like, dad, I've got this casewhere these people are
trafficking in illegal organs, and he was like, oh my god. Can
you get one for Sunny? Is thatsomething Sunny could do?
And Tracy's like, yeah. I thinkI could make this work. He does
try to shut her

Matt (01:09:04):
down, though. My my angle on Tracy in this episode

Rachel (01:09:08):
Yeah.

Matt (01:09:08):
Is a little deeper where she is playing up the my uncle
needs a heart transplant thing, and she's consistently playing
the aggrieved niece

Rachel (01:09:24):
Yeah.

Matt (01:09:25):
Who would do anything even illegal subverting their
morality and, like, legalresponsibility as a police
officer to save her uncle, andshe's portraying this character
for everyone, including policecolleagues, friends, family,

(01:09:45):
whatever

Rachel (01:09:46):
Yeah.

Matt (01:09:48):
So that she could convince this guy. And if this guy was,
like, oh, well, I know somepeople in the police department.
Let me let me ask him. Hey. Hey.
I'm talking to Tracy. She seemsreally upset.

Rachel (01:10:05):
Oh, yeah. She's been consistently upset.

Matt (01:10:07):
And and she seems

Rachel (01:10:08):
like she playing the long game.

Matt (01:10:11):
She seems like she might, like, actually compromise her
her principles

Rachel (01:10:17):
Yeah.

Matt (01:10:18):
Like, and do something illegal to save her uncle. And
they're like, oh, yeah. Like, she's really broken up, and
she's been,

Rachel (01:10:25):
like She's mentioned it for, like, a week. Yeah. She's
absolutely yeah.

Matt (01:10:29):
But, really, she's playing the long game of

Rachel (01:10:32):
Sure.

Matt (01:10:33):
Of getting into to break up this organ trafficking.

Rachel (01:10:37):
You're saying. And you know what? It makes her a better
character, so let's go with it.

Matt (01:10:40):
Yeah.

Rachel (01:10:40):
Let's go with it. And it makes Sunny make more sense, so
I'm I'm happy.

Matt (01:10:44):
This was just her investigative angle Yeah. To
identify the

LaCroix (01:10:48):
people involved

Matt (01:10:49):
in the drug court.

Rachel (01:10:49):
This would not even be the 3rd time that she has played
the long game undercover and itled to the future. Yeah. And she
doesn't ever tell anybody she'sdoing it. So I think this works
out really well. Yeah.
Okay. That's fine. Yeah. I'll gowith that. The doctor does tell
her, and I thought this was areally funny line.

(01:11:10):
I think you've been misled bysome unscrupulous people. And
considering the the informationshe got is secondhand from
Vashon via screen.

Matt (01:11:21):
Unscrupulous would be a good

Rachel (01:11:24):
Bang on, doctor.

Matt (01:11:25):
Description of both Scree and Vashon.

Rachel (01:11:27):
It's not accurate, but it did come from some
unscrupulous people. So Yeah. That's fair. And Nick is
actually back in his flashbackagain because he's gotta finish
reliving all the trauma. AndHans has transplanted the heart
that he acquired and is tryingto wake up his girlfriend slash
wife, Veronica.
And I wrote in my notes, this isvery Murray Shelley of him. So

(01:11:50):
this is our most Frankensteinsection because he's like, come
back to me, Veronica. AndVeronica wakes up because and is
unhappy because she has beenbrought back against her
consent. Like, she didn'tconsent to this.

Matt (01:12:03):
Right. Was this would this be the same level of
nonconsensual reviving

Rachel (01:12:14):
Yes.

Matt (01:12:15):
Revival

Rachel (01:12:15):
Yes.

Matt (01:12:16):
As getting turned into a vampire.

Rachel (01:12:17):
This is also my problem with the premise of, that new
movie that just came out.Something things. It's got
Willem Dafoe in it. I don'tknow. The lady gets brought
back, and then she goes on,like, a journey of self
discovery.
And that that's a whole otherpodcast. But we come back to the
present because Veronica's like, the shit you do. Actually, she

(01:12:39):
doesn't talk because she's losther voice because he probably
severed

Matt (01:12:43):
her vocal cords. He he probably cut a crucial nerve.

Rachel (01:12:46):
I'm sure he did. But Sage Freeman, which Natalie's
doctor is doctor Freeman, is onthe list.

Matt (01:12:55):
It's the only person on the heart transplant list with
the same blood type as Natalie.

Rachel (01:12:59):
Yep. Bump.

Matt (01:13:00):
No coincidence.

Rachel (01:13:02):
And Nick leans back, and he's like, hey, Angie. Can you
get me some more some moreinformation about this one? And
the lady's like, sure. And shetap tap tap taps, and then it
must pull up more informationbecause that's what happens. It
just happens.
It's it's part of getting Nickwhere we need him to go, so it
happens. And then, uh-oh,Natalie is getting snatched. So
she's getting transported. They, like, put the IV bag on her

(01:13:24):
chest, and they're like, get herprepped for surgery. We're gonna
take her heart out immediately.
And Tracy is still trying to buyher uncle a murderer heart,
apparently, because she's stilltrying to convince this guy. And
the doctor that she's talking tois, like, you know, getting a
donor sometimes requires, quote, special effort, and it will be

(01:13:47):
costly. And Tracy's like, yeah.Yeah. It's cool.
We are rich. Like, my dad is apolice commissioner.

Matt (01:13:54):
We've Do you know how many monthly bribe payments we get
Yeah. As a family? Our wholefamily So many. Our cops. We're
all loaded.

Rachel (01:14:04):
Yeah. And not that cops are loaded. This is Or

Matt (01:14:07):
to to quote Hyperbole. To quote an ex employer of mine,
we're fucking flush.

Rachel (01:14:16):
Yeah. And I'm pretty sure pores have more heart than
just one anyway. I mean, that'show they work so hard. Aren't
they like octopuses? Don't theyhave one in every limb?

Matt (01:14:26):
So another thing that comes up at this point right.
Natalie's getting prepped insurgery, in the surgery in the
OR, and then doctor Freeman goesto get her child.

Rachel (01:14:39):
Yeah.

Matt (01:14:40):
This child is not already prepped. Like, they haven't she
hasn't called ahead. Like, hey.I got Natalie sedated. We're
taking her to your building.

Rachel (01:14:48):
Yeah. Have her

Matt (01:14:49):
Go ahead and have Sam Sage. Prepped. Like, get Sam in
the OR. Sage.

Rachel (01:14:56):
Yeah. Sage. Like the like the herb.

Matt (01:14:59):
Go ahead and get sage prepped.

Rachel (01:15:01):
Don't dead name him.

Matt (01:15:04):
So that when I get there with Natalie, we'll just be
ready to hot swap.

Rachel (01:15:10):
Right. Hot swap. Exactly. Swap that part. Well,
they they really would.
Like, they'd have her sedated, and they'd have I believe it the
child is supposed to befeminine, so we'll go with her.
Yeah. They they would have hadher prepped and sedated and
probably, like, not open becauseyou don't wanna leave them open
for too long, but, like, ready.Because once you get that heart,

(01:15:33):
you got to go go go go fuck

Matt (01:15:35):
you up. If they're taking Natalie to Sage, then the as
long as Natalie's staying aliveYeah. But this is

Rachel (01:15:42):
Rent A Doctor working with Rent A Doctors.

LaCroix (01:15:44):
Right.

Matt (01:15:45):
Another consideration with organ donation, especially with
the heart, is the size of theorgan. Right. You can't really
take an adult heart and stick itin a child body because it's,
like, twice the size.

Rachel (01:16:01):
Plus, look how stressed Natalie is. You know her blood
pressure is high. That heart islike.

Matt (01:16:06):
Is her heart really healthy?

Rachel (01:16:08):
Is it? Did we check? Look at all the shit that's
happened to her, and she hasnever gotten any kind of trauma
counseling for any of it. Lookat the that's about to happen to
her. But cut back to Tracy, andthe guy's like, you've made a
convincing argument.
There's a paperwork in thisfolder on my desk.

Matt (01:16:23):
There just happens to be a strewn blue folders, with
paperwork. Yeah. Because, yeah, our whole illegal organ
requisition program, yeah, wedefinitely have paperwork for
that.

Rachel (01:16:38):
Yeah. Definitely. I like to think she opens the folder in
the top sheet. It's like, soyou've chosen to get an illegal
organ. And it's a brochure with, like, happy people on the front.
And there's, like, a deadmurderer at

Matt (01:16:49):
their feet. The folder with, like, the 3 brochures in
it Yeah. With happy smilingpeople.

Rachel (01:16:54):
Yeah. And there's, like, a dead guy in the comically,
like, black and white stripedinmate outfit. And they're like,
where did where did my organcome from?

Matt (01:17:04):
Ethically sourced from.

Rachel (01:17:06):
Unethically sourced. Unethically sourced. Nick does
realize. Nick, in a burst ofinspiration, realizes that Sage
Freeman might be related todoctor Freeman, the doctor that
is treating Natalie. And he'slike, maybe this is significant.
I don't know. And Tracy hasactually gone walkabout at the

(01:17:27):
clinic. She's like, fuck yourpaperwork. I'm going for a walk.
So she's walking around theclinic, which does lend credence
to your, this is a long conthing.

Matt (01:17:34):
Mhmm.

Rachel (01:17:35):
And she finds the Freeman ladies, talking about
how the donor's getting preppedin the other room. You're gonna
get a heart, and the sage islike, can we be fucking done?
Because I'm fucking done. Andher mom is like, no. This is the
last one.
I swear to god. Like, thisheart's gonna last forever. It's
gonna be perfectly fine. I'vetotally vetted it this time.
It's not a lady that gotsnatched from the tattoo parlor

(01:17:56):
like last time.
This is, like, a legit coronerwho's perfectly fine. It's
perfectly fine. It's fine. It'sfine. It's fine.
And Tracy's like, cool. Let mego to the other room and see who
they're prepping, and it'sNatalie. And she pulls out the
phone to call Nick, and then shegets threatened by the doctor.
She gets, like, a gun in herside, and she's like, the doctor

(01:18:17):
goes, tell me, what's your bloodtype?

LaCroix (01:18:22):
What? Who's got Natalie?

Vachon (01:18:26):
Did you find what you were looking for, miss Federer?
Tell me. What's your blood type?Go on. Move.

Rachel (01:18:35):
But Nick calls Reese after Tracy hangs up because
she's like, Nick, they haveNatalie. Click. Which she's also
the queen of cryptic phonecalls, so that works out.

Matt (01:18:43):
So I was thinking, Tracy is, like, the the Daniel Day
Lewis method actor of undercoverwork. Right? Wow. She she does
not break character even whenTake seats. Like, that actors
don't break character

Rachel (01:19:03):
Yeah.

Matt (01:19:03):
Even when they stop filming Yeah. Which can make it
stressful and inefficient to dothings like, hey, actor, can you
can you fill out this, like, insurance paperwork for filming
this next scene

Rachel (01:19:20):
Yeah.

Matt (01:19:20):
Where we need to have, like, a stunt actor and
whatever. We just need to dosome some, like, OSHA paperwork.
And they're like, sorry. I wasraised by Native Americans. I do
not read or write English.
You swine.

Rachel (01:19:38):
That's Tracy.

Matt (01:19:39):
That's what

Rachel (01:19:39):
I'm saying.

Matt (01:19:40):
And so it it it produces inefficient behaviors

Rachel (01:19:46):
Yeah.

Matt (01:19:46):
When you're with when you're outside of the setting
that you've developed this

Rachel (01:19:50):
character for. Worst partnership. Right? So We we get
that.

Matt (01:19:54):
Yeah. When Tracy's with the rest of the cops Yeah. She's
like, I'm in character for myundercover thing. She could
communicate things to thepolice, to her coworkers

Rachel (01:20:08):
No. That's not what you would do.

Matt (01:20:09):
That would improve the whole operation. But she's like,
no. I'm a grieving familymember. I wouldn't just open up
to these police about how I'mfeeling and what I'm planning on
doing. This I would not tell thepolice about this potentially

(01:20:33):
illegal thing that I'm planningto do.
My character would not do that,so I am not going to do that.
Yeah. I cannot break character. So so which having Tracy be
that, like, into I'm not goingto break character works because
they do it consistently. Yeah.
And it works narratively becauseit adds some friction and

(01:20:58):
conflict to the narrative, whichyou can use for, you know,
increasing the suspense level ofthe story.
So that
that's what

Rachel (01:21:08):
I'm I'm done. Thank you. It was good. No. It was good.
She's the Daniel Day Lewis ofUndercover Actors. I got it. So
Nick actually calls because hecalls Reese because Tracy calls
him and then hangs up, and he'slike, shit. Maybe she told Reese
where she was going. Pause forlaughter.
So Nick calls Reese, and he'slike, do you know what Tracy was

(01:21:30):
up to? Like, I think something'shappened to Natalie. Like, I'm I
I am now outside of her dark, boarded up doctor's office, and
she does not appear to be here.I'm glad I had this address
because I was supposed to pickher up, luckily. Otherwise, I
wouldn't even have known whereher doctor's office was because,

(01:21:51):
like, who cares?
Humans and their healthproblems. And Reese goes,
where's Vetter? Where's yourpartner? And Nick's like, I
don't fucking know. And he'slike, god.
I wish you 2 would just staytogether.

LaCroix (01:22:03):
I think they're both in trouble, captain. I'm I'm not
Natalie's doctor's office. Hercar's here, but she's not. The
building's locked.

Rachel (01:22:08):
Where's better? You know, I really wish you 2 would
stay in sync.

LaCroix (01:22:13):
Just put out an APB. I don't know where Tracy is now,
but I know who she was with.

Rachel (01:22:19):
Nick.

Matt (01:22:20):
Alright. Nick. Nick.

Rachel (01:22:24):
I'm gonna have to sit those 2 down and show them what
the weird partner needs. Do weneed to have a talk about the
buddy system? And Nick's like, what? Yeeep. And he just flies
out of the car.

Matt (01:22:37):
Okay. So after this, Reese is like, okay. Nick, Tracy,
we're going to LoJack you.

Rachel (01:22:49):
We're going to tag. Air tag. Yeah.

Matt (01:22:51):
Going to surgically attach a GPS transponder to your body.

Rachel (01:22:56):
Can you imagine what that would look like? Okay. So
Nick doesn't ever okay. Goahead.

Matt (01:23:00):
So Nick, in principle, couldn't object. Yeah. He
because, really, he can'tbecause what happens when I'm
flying and my GPS recording is,like, you

Rachel (01:23:14):
When did you come 95 miles an hour in a straight
line?

Matt (01:23:17):
Toronto, like, 60 miles in 10 seconds? Man, okay. It

Rachel (01:23:24):
must have connected to a different tower. That's weird.

Matt (01:23:27):
But, Knight, you need to come back and get your unit
replaced. It's malfunctioningbecause it says you, like, flew
across the city. He's like Oh,yeah. Yeah. Definitely
defective.

Rachel (01:23:36):
Weird. Yeah. No. He flies off. He flies off without
really answering Reese or reallyhanging up because Reese is
like, hello?
Hello? The fuck? It's just

Matt (01:23:48):
I was just tagging him. To go up to his car.

Rachel (01:23:50):
You can't even tag his car because he just ditches it
half the time. He's like, andI'm out. He just flies out of
the top. And, of course, he goesto see, though, Sean, and he's
like, where did she go? Wheredid you send Tracy?
What is happening? And Vashon'slike, oh, I sent her to this,
like, illegal organ clinic orwhatever because she said she
had an uncle, and Nick is like,Jesus. Can you please just just

(01:24:16):
give me the address? AndVashawn's like, okay. And then
he goes, did she go alone?
And then he looks at Vashon, andhe goes, of course, she did. Of
course, you sent her to theillegal organ clinic by herself.
And he's like, what? She didn'task. And he goes Vashawn goes,
what?
I thought I was helping. I'll gonow.

Matt (01:24:35):
It's too late.

Rachel (01:24:36):
And Vashon actually stands up. He's like, I'll go.
I'll come. I'll help. And Nickgoes, you know what?

Matt (01:24:42):
Don't bother.

Rachel (01:24:43):
Don't. He goes, you're not help.

Matt (01:24:46):
And So I sometimes talk about doing stuff with the kids,
but more when they were a lotyounger.

Rachel (01:24:55):
Yeah.

Matt (01:24:56):
But I would say, oh, yeah. They were a times 2 helper or a
times 3 helper.

Rachel (01:24:59):
Yeah.

Matt (01:24:59):
Because That's

Rachel (01:25:00):
how much extra time. That's how much

Matt (01:25:01):
extra time. That's how much longer it took Yeah. To
have them involved. And so Nickis probably like, Vashawn's like
a times 5 helper.

Rachel (01:25:09):
Yeah. It ain't gonna work. So we come back to Tracy,
and Tracy is, like, gettingauctioned off by this doctor.
He's like, yeah. She's young.
She's a woman. She's fit. Shelooks fine. Yep. Little skinny.
Gonna be fine. Yep. What do youwant? You want all of it? Okay.
Cool. I'll knock her out. I'lljust yoink all of that stuff out
of her midsection, and I'll sendit off. And Tracy is like, oh,
no. Maybe I should have toldsomebody where I went.

(01:25:32):
And, uh-oh, Natalie's surgery isimminent. They have her covered.
This is absolutely not enoughtechnology to be able to do what
they're about to do. It'sperfectly fine. They've got a
sheet on her chest.
They're drawing a line down themiddle, and Nick is literally
zooming through the streets, like so you know there's, like,
6 more sightings of the TorontoMothman that night. Right? And

(01:25:53):
so he barges into the operationroom just as they're about to
cut. Doesn't know where she isin the building. Doesn't have
anything but the address, whichmeans he just has Toronto
memorized.
He's just like, oh, okay. I'mgonna go there.

Matt (01:26:05):
Okay. Hold

Rachel (01:26:06):
Oh, god. Okay.

Matt (01:26:08):
Something just jumped into my head. Sure. Okay. So Nick can
hear heartbeats. Right?

Rachel (01:26:14):
Yes.

Matt (01:26:14):
Nick can hear heartbeats from a distance. Yes. Yes. He
can. We don't have any

Rachel (01:26:18):
Is this the he knows what people's heartbeat sound
like thing? Because we talkedabout this already.

Matt (01:26:24):
Canonically Yeah. Superman can hear all the heartbeats on
the planet, and he knows

Rachel (01:26:29):
he always knows which argument. Okay. I know. Okay.
Please just let me finish.
Okay. I'm sorry. I'm being a 2times helper.

Matt (01:26:41):
So Superman always knows where Bruce Wayne is because
he's always hearing his heart.

Rachel (01:26:45):
Canonically. Yes. Okay. Yeah.

Matt (01:26:49):
Nick maybe can't hear as well as Superman. But once he
gets close enough, he can sensethe humans around him

Rachel (01:26:58):
Yeah.

Matt (01:26:59):
And know where they are, and he recognizes Natalie's
heartbeat. So he just has toget, like, close to the building

Rachel (01:27:07):
And he'll know.

Matt (01:27:08):
And he can find his way

Rachel (01:27:09):
That's fair.

Matt (01:27:10):
To Natalie's Sure. Operating room.

Rachel (01:27:12):
That's it. Yeah. Let's do that. The most important part
about this section really is,Trassy Trassy. Tracy and her
sassy Bolero jacket.
She's got this, like, red Bolerojacket on. It's far as Spanish
of her. And she actually knocksthe doctor out because he he
pokes his head out to see whatall the kerfuffle is in the

(01:27:33):
operation room, and she takesthe door and slams the door into
him.

Matt (01:27:36):
It's very shortsighted of him to

Rachel (01:27:39):
be like fucking sell it, bitch.

Matt (01:27:40):
This is a seasoned police officer Yeah. In physical prime
condition. I'm gonna turn myback over. Going to put my gun
hand through the door Yeah. Andhalf my body through the door

Rachel (01:27:54):
That's gonna be fine.

Matt (01:27:55):
My attention off of this, like, fighting machine, this law
enforcement machine. Yeah. Andnothing bad is going to happen
because she is a small blondewoman who's scared.

Rachel (01:28:06):
Yeah. It's gonna be fine.

Matt (01:28:08):
Right? Wrong.

Rachel (01:28:09):
Which I like. Yes. I like. Tracy saved her fucking
self in Trophy Girl, and she isonce again acting in her own
defense. And I only reinforces

Matt (01:28:20):
her pattern of method acting her way through these
undercover operations andgetting herself out of them.

Rachel (01:28:30):
Because she's a good cop, t m t m. So she

Matt (01:28:33):
She's a good cop, brawn.

Rachel (01:28:34):
She's a good they're all good cops, brawn. So she she
could have easily been ourdamsel in distress. Like, when
you get a female partner

Matt (01:28:44):
for a character like Nick to be that Yeah.

Rachel (01:28:47):
We keep

Matt (01:28:47):
as a counterpart to Nick.

Rachel (01:28:49):
Yeah. We keep coming up against, like, she is a damsel.
She's in distress, but she'salso a damsel in her own
defense. So she we could haveeasily made her into this, oh,
no. This big, burly man has onceagain captured me, and my burly
handsome partner must save me.

Matt (01:29:07):
Hashtag swoon.

Rachel (01:29:08):
Hashtag swoon. We could have easily made that made her
into that character. And we keepyes. Every once in a while, she
gets herself into thesesituations that you're, like,
this is a 100% your fault. Butshe also works to get yourself
But

Matt (01:29:21):
we're self hurt that.

Rachel (01:29:22):
Out of them. So, I do like that about Tracy, because
she could have been such athrowaway character. And we
don't make her a throwawaycharacter, and I love that about
her.

Matt (01:29:33):
The tropes are way more powerful Yeah. As a narrative
device when you, like, firmlyapply the trope Yeah. And then
you subvert it.

Rachel (01:29:44):
I do think that's also why we make Vashon very, like,
what? She's fine. Like, I don'tneed to be there. I don't need
to follow

Matt (01:29:51):
her around. Manly he is? Look at his hair.

Rachel (01:29:54):
Well, I think if he had followed her around, now

Matt (01:29:56):
she would be

Rachel (01:29:57):
damsel in distress again.

Matt (01:29:58):
That that was a

Rachel (01:29:59):
I know.

Matt (01:29:59):
A cut at his hair.

Rachel (01:30:00):
Yeah. I know. We we can't

Matt (01:30:02):
Somebody needs to take a cut at his at

Rachel (01:30:04):
his hair. Yeah. So she saves herself, which is the
whole point of that discussion. And then Nick is with Natalie,
and he's got everybody againstthe wall. And he's like, I got
to the wall.
And he ends up stroking the sideof Natalie's face, like, wake
up, Natalie. And then hedisassociates because this is
such a stressful moment. And wego back to, Frankenstein's

(01:30:24):
lawyer. Actually, Frankenstein'sdoctor, not the monster. But so
it would be Frankenstein's lair.

Matt (01:30:28):
It would be Frankenstein's lair.

Rachel (01:30:30):
Yeah. So Veronica is wandering around, unhappily, and
she can't talk, and she'sagitated because, singing was
her life. Her life was her life. She no longer has a life or
singing. And he's like, oh,she's gonna get over it.
It's fine. I think she mightactually be on her period right
now, so, like, it's cool. Like, she's gonna once all that stuff
evens out, she's gonna be fine. And she actually stabs herself.

Matt (01:30:53):
She's like,

Rachel (01:30:54):
I don't want this.

Matt (01:30:55):
Don't really explain why. She doesn't know what happened.

Rachel (01:31:00):
Because I don't know. Not really.

Matt (01:31:01):
She's just see the whole thing after she woke up. So

Rachel (01:31:04):
He could have been like, listen. You got trampled by a
horse, but Nick is a vampire. And he killed a lady, and I
ripped out her heart. And I puther in your put it in your
chest, but you deserve thatheart more than she does.

Matt (01:31:17):
K? And regardless of how he explained it

Rachel (01:31:19):
Yeah.

Matt (01:31:20):
She don't like it.

Rachel (01:31:21):
She don't like it, and she stabs herself. And that's
kind of the end of it. Nick islike, I don't think he's gonna
keep trying to cure me, so I'mjust gonna go now. And he, like,
disappears into the shed.

Matt (01:31:35):
Darn. Foiled again.

Rachel (01:31:38):
Humans. And we come back to, Natalie waking up.

Matt (01:31:45):
I bet Lecla was involved.

Rachel (01:31:47):
We kind of have, like, flashback scene flashback scene
a little bit here. And,actually, Tracy comes up on
Freeman, the doctor Freemanfleeing with Sage. And Tracy
Tracy's like, stop right there. And doctor Freeman is like, you
don't understand what it's liketo have a child who's dying. And
you're a doctor, and you can'tsave them because you can't get

(01:32:11):
the one thing that you need tosave them.
And Tracy's like, oh, I beg todiffer. I think I do understand.

Matt (01:32:17):
I have a sick uncle who needs a new heart. I totally
understand.

Rachel (01:32:20):
My 70 year old uncle who ruined his heart through,
unmedicated high blood pressure,he needs a heart, and he just
can't get it. And it's exactlythe same thing as you having a
child who's dying. Okay? So Ireally resent the implication.

Matt (01:32:37):
And as a law enforcement officer, I cannot bend the laws
to say to get him what he needs.

Rachel (01:32:44):
Except I was about

Matt (01:32:45):
to. I totally understand.

Rachel (01:32:46):
Yeah. She's like, who is this woman? It's like when I try
to talk to my niece, and I'mlike, we're not making a
connection. The plugs are notcompatible. They will not go
together.
But then we come back to theflashback, and it's Hans losing
his shit. He's like, what haveyou done? And that's when Nick
is like, so I'm just gonna call.I'm parked outside, so I think

(01:33:10):
I'm double parked. I think I'mjust gonna head out.
I wanna talk to you guys later.Okay? And then Natalie starts
waking up in the present And,yay. Everybody is saved. And so
Nick goes to see her at themorgue, and this is a really
interesting section for severalreasons.
1st, Natalie immediately wentback to work after being,
drugged, kidnapped, and nearlyused as a, nearly having her

(01:33:34):
heart harvested to be given toanother person. She's like, what
is it? Tuesday? And so she justgoes back to work. And Maybe
this is a different night.
This is a weird, heavy flirtingscene. It's not I'm not mad at

Matt (01:33:49):
that. Mood. Well, maybe Maybe not all the anesthesia has
worn off.

Rachel (01:33:53):
Oh, maybe. Yeah. It's only been 24 hours since she got
to do. She was like, I gottawork. I can't not go to work.

Matt (01:34:00):
I'm really behind.

Rachel (01:34:03):
Because Nick comes in, and he's like, oh, we're doing
something fun, and she's lookinginto a microscope, and she goes,
only if you like watchingcellular mitosis as much as I
do, and people say I'm boring.Actually, she's looking at hair
follicles because she's like, hair follicles are actually more
interesting than most peoplegive them credit for it. And
Nick is like, I think I diedagain. And she goes, it's

(01:34:26):
something about like, I thinkI'm, she tells, she ends up
telling him, don't go allholistic and alternative on me.
Because he's like, I don't know.
I was thinking about tryingmaybe out what does he say at
the end here? I don't know. Ididn't take notes. I skipped
straight from people say I'mboring to don't go all holistic
and alternative on me. It's aweird dig at him because he's
like, well, you know, yourealize what I have done

(01:34:47):
throughout history.
Like, one time I got Chinesemedicine, but then Lacroix beat
me up and took it from me. Andthen this other time, I paid a
charlatan, and then this guyelectrocuted me for a while.
This dude has been alternativeand holistic. And now he's
trying science, but he's notcommitted to science. This isn't
a committed relationship.
He could dump it at any time. But Nick tells her, how's your

(01:35:09):
name? She's like, you know what?I think it's made a miraculous
recovery. And he goes, don'ttell oh, he tells her he likes
her knee just the way it is, andshe goes, do I mean this to take
do should I take this as youidolize my knee?
And he goes, yeah. It's mynominee for body parts hall of
fame. Get a little flustered,Nick. That's not a great line.

Matt (01:35:34):
Keep it cool, Nick.

Rachel (01:35:35):
It's this scene to me is interesting because Natalie is
more competently flirting withNick than Nick is with her. So
it feels like she's completelycomfortable in this interaction,
and he's not. Mhmm. Because sheends up saying, do you like
anything else about me? And hegoes, yeah.
I like the whole package justthe way it is. And then he leans

(01:36:00):
in for a kiss, and Nataliefucking dies. She's like, sorry.
That isn't this isn't what youthought it was. It kinda reminds
me of the the end of that oneepisode where he goes, I wish,
and she just goes, yeah, andleaves.
Remember that episode? I thinkthat might be Dying to Know You.

(01:36:24):
Anyway, it's the one where, like, they flirt with the idea
of him being able to be withpeople. And he's basically like,
I wish we could have beentogether like that. And she's
like, see you tomorrow.
And it may it I like theselittle interactions like this
because Natalie is absolutelyinto him, but it gives you the

(01:36:45):
impression that she is fullyaware of how unfeasible this
relationship is. And so she'snot she's into him in, like, a
involuntary sense. Like, I likeyou because you are attractive,
you are interesting, and you arein my proximity. But I'm not
committed to pining for youevery moment of every day. It's
like, I like you enough to flirtwith you, but I don't know that

(01:37:09):
this could ever work.
Because the last time we triedto go out, you clearly
hypnotized me into forgettingthe entire evening. And I'm just
not okay with that. Becausethere's no way she doesn't know
that in be my Valentine, someshit went down and it got taken
from her.

LaCroix (01:37:23):
Yeah.

Rachel (01:37:24):
But she may not feel like she can confront him about
it. Like, what do you say? Whathappened that was so horrific?
You took my memory. How couldyou even explain it?
Anyway, I love the dodge at theend. I think if they had kissed,
I'd been like, Lane. That's notwhat happened. Natalie's like,
nope. I'm I'm entertaining thisenough, but I'm not entertaining

(01:37:48):
it as much as you wanted to.
Plus, Nick kisses so manypeople. How meaningful could it
possibly be? It would be moremeaningful to her than it would
to him, which is probably whatshe realizes. Yeah. Yeah.
And that's the end of thatepisode. How did you feel? I
feel like you talked a lot thisepisode, and I'm really happy
for you. Like, I'm I'm thankfulfor all the participation

Matt (01:38:10):
You're welcome.

Rachel (01:38:11):
Including the Daniel Day Lewis. So if you're just going
forward, keep in mind that Tracyis always method acting. She's
undercover, not undercover atall times.

Matt (01:38:23):
To the detriment of collaboration with her
colleagues.

Rachel (01:38:26):
Layers. She's like a parfait.

Matt (01:38:30):
Not like an onion.

Rachel (01:38:31):
You think it's just vanilla yogurt, but there's
granola. It's just underneaththe surface.

Matt (01:38:37):
There's raisins.

Rachel (01:38:38):
And it's on top of more vanilla yogurt, but which still
has granola underneath of it.It's layers. Not like Vashon,
who is all surface. He's justshiny chrome with more chrome
underneath of it. Useless andrusts quickly, and then never
quite gets back to the way itlooked before it rusted.

(01:39:00):
Alright. I guess we'll leave itthere. I can't believe we're
almost halfway through season 3and it kinda makes me like sad,
but nostalgic. Like, maybe weshould start back over at the
beginning and just do them allover again. I mean, we have some
episodes at the beginning thatare, like, 45 minutes long.
I don't even know how weaccomplished that. I listened to
it. I'm like, we need a riff. Weneed a riff. I feel like we

(01:39:22):
should go back and redo someepisodes.
What do you think? I do it forthe look. I make those
statements for the look. Thisis, we're all traveling through
time at the speed of one secondper one second. And we're only
going in one direction.
We cannot go back.

Matt (01:39:40):
That's right.

Rachel (01:39:42):
So I guess until next time, friend.

Matt (01:39:44):
The arrow of time only points in one direction.

Rachel (01:39:46):
Yeah. Oh, can you combine that with the logic
puzzle where, you can neverquite get there because every
time it goes halfway what's thatone where it's, like, half past
yeah.

Matt (01:39:58):
That that's an artificial construct because mathematics
does not really exist in nature.

Rachel (01:40:04):
Oh, yeah. See, I know that because I've been reading
HG Wells. So Yeah. Alright.Until next time, friends.

Matt (01:40:11):
Bye. Hey. That's the best

LaCroix (01:40:13):
way, isn't it? Nature looking after everything on its
own without man's intervention.

Rachel (01:40:17):
Uh-huh. Well, don't go all holistic and alternative on
me. We all know that medicalscience does occasionally still
come up with the odd miracle nowand then.

LaCroix (01:40:27):
All I'm saying is I think I like your knee the way
it is, and I'm glad that you'rein one piece.

Rachel (01:40:32):
Well, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my oh,
never mind. Am I gonna to takethis to mean then that you
idolize my name?

LaCroix (01:40:41):
Oh, absolutely. It's my personal choice for the body
parts, all

Rachel (01:40:45):
the thing. Anything

LaCroix (01:40:47):
else? Everything. I like the whole package the way
it is.
