Speaker 1 (00:11):
Don't call it comeback. Well, actually do call it comeback,
because the beatdown is back, y'all.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
It's twenty twenty five and we are bringing on the
news and updates. So it's been an interesting couple of months,
I would say, between trades and offseason signings, and I
think this Commander team is ready to get back in
action after a really stellar NFC Championship appearance. Unfortunately fell
to the Philadelphia Eagles. But it's okay. We are reloaded,
(00:39):
we are backing better than ever, and we are all
here to debate and discuss how they're going to improve
upon that. Well, really, what was the most successful season
in three decades? And I don't know about y'all, but
this podcast has Maryland pride because I have two urp
alums joining the third terp alum me for this week
one debut, we have Alex Sloan from DC News Now
(01:03):
he is a sports quarter and anchor for them. Alex,
how you doing pretty good?
Speaker 3 (01:07):
It's always good to have three turfs on there, especially
after a Terps win to start the season with the
pressure quarterback looking pretty good?
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Absolutely right? Hell yes? And the third turn we have
is Ethan Candau of Monumo Sports Ethan, How you doing man, I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Doing great, Zach, Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Always fun joining you too, and excited for Week one
just a few days away.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Who would have thought this back in July.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
I know it seems like in every year it seems
like it's just a slow crawl towards Week one, but
this year, this offseason felt particularly like that. But the
good thing is week ones. Here were days away from
Week one against the New York Giants are coming to
town at Northwest Stadium, and it's gonna be a big
matchup because, as every single Washington Commanders fan knows, the
(01:53):
Giants no play the Commander's pretty tough for whatever reason,
aside from being a division game, and I think this
is going to be no exception. With a new core
back in Russell Wilson, You've got a really talented, looks
like deep intive line up front. You've got league neighbors
ready to go in year two. Is their number one
wide receiver. They've got some new auditions there with camp
scattaboth as they're running back. It should be interesting and
(02:15):
I think this could be a very dangerous Giants team
at some point. I think they could potentially be some
teams that they shouldn't or at least are on paper
better than them. So we're going to go in and get
to bait and how the Commanders can pull off a
win against against New York. But since it's been a while,
we're gonna go ahead and give you a little bit
of a refresher on the rules. Here. These two guys
are going to be debating three topics on the Giants
(02:37):
and Commanders matchup, and I will give them points based
on who I think as one each round, because that
is my heavy responsibility as a host. I've been burdened
with glorious purpose. I've been watching Loki recently in case
you have a guest and at the and will pronounce
a winner based on my beliefs on who made the
best points. But again, as I've always said, you should
(02:58):
not be focused on my opinion this, you should be
more focused on their taste because they're they are watching practice,
they are the experts. And with all that being said,
let's get right into it, starting with question one, and
we're gonna deal with this giant seph of the line
that I mentioned earlier, because you've got dexter Lawrence. You've
got Abdul Carter, You've got Brian Burns, You've got Capon Thibodeau.
(03:22):
All these guys are you know, first round picks there
have been. Brian Burgs was traded traded to the to
the to the Giants, and it's gonna it looks to
be quite a formidable group. I'd say that, without objectively,
probably the best position group on the Giants roster. And
they're going to able to get to wash it off
with the line that has a few new pieces of
their own with Laramie Tunzel. You got Brandy Coleman moving
(03:43):
over to guard, like Josh Connerley, based on the depth chart,
is going to be the starting right tackle rookie out
of Oregon. And it seems like that group is gonna
be better on paper than what it was last year,
which I think performed better than some expectations would have
you believe. That said, they haven't spent much time together.
Looks like Larry mc tunsville has been He's he's not
been hurt, but he hasn't he hasn't been playing in
(04:05):
any of the preseason games as he is a veteran
with you know, one of the best tackles of the game.
You should expect that Brandon Coleman has moved over to
gard like I said, but he's been out for significant
portion of Camby to come back near the end there,
it looks like he's going to be okay. But this
is a lot of different moving parts here that haven't
really got to spend a lot of time together in
real game like scenarios. So it makes me wonder how
(04:27):
much of a big deal is that. And we'll start
off with Alex here and you can answer this like,
is it a big deal that Washington's off the line
did not get too much time working together against this
this really talented even the front for the Giants.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Well, I think I have concerns about the offense as
a whole getting all the time they have together because
you know, you think about how many how much time
they missed out on having Terry mccluurin, you know, get
reps with all these different guys in the O line
to know how he's going to offer for you know,
they need to protect Jagen on those sorts of plays.
So I do think it's a concern, But I do
think one thing that might benefit them in the scenario
(05:01):
is think about how many different running backs we're.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Going to see in the game. We could possibly see.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Up to four guys that they're all active at least
three different scenarios, whether it's Echel or Chris Rodriguez or
Bill or Jeremy McNichols.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
How is that overline going to block for them?
Speaker 3 (05:16):
And those goal line situations in the shotgun and when
Jaden's scrambling and throwing. So I think we're going to
see different guys being plugged in in different situations. And
my guess is we're going to see a lot more
rotation as opposed to that main five starting guys this
week in Week one, and then maybe we see them
solidify that five and the season goes on. But so
(05:38):
I would say I'm concerned, But at the same time,
maybe it might be a little bit of a benefit
because as the season goes on, there's going to be
more guys versed in more roles, And as Dan Quinn likes.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
To say, they like to have the depth.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
They want to have to be prepared in case anybody
goes down.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
So you do mention the depth, and I think that's
interesting because on the depth chart, for example, they have
Nick Allagroarty or Andrew Willer listed as a as the
starting right guard until Sam Coysy comes back, and I
think I think the death is really what gives me
a little bit more comfort because more so than last year,
I think he'd say, because like last year, it felt
(06:14):
like there were some if they had injury, they could
be in some serious fueble here. But you haven't necessarily
felt Cosme's absence as much because you have guys like
Andrew Welly and Aligretty both start, both experienced starters who
can come in there and be backups or or anything
like that if they need to. So Ethan will switch
over to you and we'll add into the depth here,
Like are you concerned about this off the line? Even
(06:38):
even if they have a little bit more depth than
they did last year, my.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Concern level isn't exactly high.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
I think one of the benefits to camp was Dan
Quinn did a really good job of shuffling things up
and having.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Connerly play at right tackle.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
At guard, he had Brandon Coleman taking reps all over
Alan Greddy Wiley. I think the offensive line, they had
a bunch of different combinations that they worked with throughout
training camp that I think will ultimately benefit them come
week one. I'll say two more things. One, Alex mentioned
the running backs as a way to help. I don't
think you can talk about the Commander's offensive line without
(07:15):
mentioning John Bates arguably the best blocking tight ends in
the league.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
I think there's going to be.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
A ton of chipping, a ton of help from him,
especially on that right side, to kind of get Connorly
as much help.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
I mean, you mentioned it, Zach.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
The Giants front four is arguably their best position group
and one of the best.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Front fours in the entire league.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
So I think it for Connorly going out there in
his first start, if he's able to hold up on
that side of the line, that should give him a
ton of confidence moving forward that he can really block
against anyone, if he could stop Burns and Carter and
Thibodeaux and all those guys. So I would say, look,
you always want to have as many repetitions together as possible.
The offensive line didn't get that throughout the preseason. I
(07:55):
do think they're in a good spot. Over all, of
the five best guys are going to be out there,
minus Sam caused me of course, but the five best
guys otherwise are going to be out there. Like you said,
the depth is a lot better than it was last year.
I mean last year you had Brandon Coleman, third round
rookie starting at left tackle or not starting, but getting
significant reps in that first game against the Bucks. So
(08:16):
I think it's important to note just how far this
group has.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Come in a year.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
And also you have Jaden who can pretty much escape
from anything and really help out when the offensive line
is not doing great.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
So I think all those.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Factors it's a tough challenge, but I'm not overly concerned
about the offensive line.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Yeah, let's talk about Josh Connolly here for a little bit,
because he comes in that first couple weeks of camp,
when pads weren't on, it looked like there was a
little bit of a learning curve, right. You could see
that the technique was there, but maybe it was happening
a little bit too fast for him, which you should
expect to have an off the line, especially a rookie.
(08:53):
And then all of a sudden, the pads come on
and you see the progressive growth just start to happen
day by day to the point where on the debt
Ri he is the starting ride tackle and I think
I think that that speaks a lot to him. I
think that speaks a lot to a lot of the
Commanders drafted him. But also we'll switch over to you
and I mean, how good, Like, how do you think
(09:14):
Connor is going to be able to handle this kind
of responsibility because starting week one? And I know he
performed well against Abdul Carter for that one game last
year again when he was playing for Oregon, but this
is a pretty impressive group that he's going to be seeing.
Is how concerned are you that about? You know, whatever
he's going to do, And I mean, what kind of
confidence of it do you have that he can be
(09:34):
able to fulfill his duties?
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Well? Yeah, asked us about our concern level about the
offensive lineup as a whole. My concern level is there
with this Giants front. I think that's what scares me
because you have a dual Carter on one side, Brian
Burns on the other side, Dexter Lawrence in the middle.
You know, and I don't know how much the Giants
are going to switch things up, but you know, Josh
(09:56):
Connery coming in for his first game as a Rookiet.
They're probably going to bully him there on that right side,
and they're going to try to utilize that as a
weakness on the Commander's end, and that could put Jaden
in some trouble and make him out to scramble, and
that could put the Commander's offense in some trouble, and
that could stop the run game on the other end too,
So I am concerned about that. I think we're going
(10:17):
to learn a lot about Josh Connerley in just his
first game. You know, I think back two years ago
when another offensive lineman in the league, Gray Shaan Slater, made
his NFL debut in a game against the Commanders when
the Chargers were playing in Landover, and he looked the part.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Obviously was a higher pick.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
But you know, if Josh Connery can come in and
in his first ever NFL game play well against the
guigl like ebdul Carter, I think that could go a
long way in showing what this Commander's offensive line made him.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Willie be ready for the challenge.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
I think he's going to get beats some.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
I think he's going to make some blocks there, but
we'll see how it goes overall.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Before we wanted the next question, Ethan, Just real quick,
how do you what about Dodshed? His like skill set
gives you confidence that he's going to be able to
hold his own against Carter Bibodeau, maybe even Brian Burns.
I mean, what about him? Have you seen laugh mother
so that you really like these things? Okay, he can
handle himself.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Yeah. His athleticism for one.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
I think in the beginning of camp, maybe we saw
his footwork was a little slow, maybe he was a
half step behind, but like you said, as the pads
came on, he really started to look the part.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
I think it's also important to remember he switched positions.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
He was firmly a left tackle throughout his entire college
career at Oregon. He's underclassmen who declared as well, so
there has been a learning curve for him, but he's
shown he's been able to pick it up pretty quick.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
It is a big change.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
I think this test is as good as it comes,
so I think he has all the tools to turn
into promising debut. I think he's going to get some
help with John Bates and some chips, but yeah, I'm
excited to see the challenge and I think he's excited
to show kind of what he's made of as well.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Agreed, I'm excited to see with what those matters are
going to look like. I think he's looked pretty good,
especially in those last couple of weeks. I think he's
really looked in press, especially as a run blocker. I
think that's been one of the more pleasant surprises that
I've seen. So we'll see, we'll see how that works out.
But before we move on to the next question with
a score update, I liked both the points you made,
so I'll give you both a point, which I don't
(12:18):
think has ever happened in the history of the show.
But there's a good time for everything. So still tied
heading into round two, and we will go on to
the defense here, and it seems like a lot of
the Commander's biggest adjustments this Offsely's world. On the defense,
you bring in a guy like Trey Amos who you drafted.
You got Jonathan Jones at cornerback, you got Will Harris's safety,
(12:39):
You bring in some other pieces there on the devisive
line to really kind of bring up bring more of
a pass rush to that group. You want to stop
the gun run a little bit more with a Goldman,
you got Jacob Martin, You've got guys that on paper
should be able to shore up a lot of the
issues that they had last year, and Ethan since Alix
started the last time. We'll start with to you what
(13:01):
gives you a lot of confidence that this defense is
going to improve from twenty twenty four because there were times,
especially late when they were going to against better teams
where you saw some of the clear weaknesses that this
unit had, especially against the pass and obviously against the run.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
Without question, for me, it's the cornerback group. I mean
last year, week one. I mean no disrespect to Mike
Davis and Vejamin Saint Juice, but they've come a long
way from then. I mean, you have a healthy Marshall Latimore,
now Trey Amo's second round pick, who looks the part,
should be able to slide in and be a solid
number two corner right away.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
And then Mikey Sanders still.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
Who proved last year he can go to the outside
and be really successful, but now he's back in slot.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
The nickel, his normal most confident position.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
So I think that group is one a year ago
was probably the weakest position group on this defense, maybe
on this roster as a whole, and now you look
forward twelve months and that's really the strength of this defense.
I mean, I know, Bobby Wagner and Frankieluvu two of
the best linebackers in the league, but the cornerback group
should allow the safeties to kind of roam a little
(14:04):
bit more, the defensive line to get a little more pressure.
So I think it really starts with them. I think
that was obviously a big area of concern for Adam
Peters when he took this job eighteen months ago or so,
and you can tell by the moves and the investments
he's put into that position that it should be a
lot better this year.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
I think so too. And you know, if you bring
up a good point about the corners and Alex, we'll
shift the folks over there. Because if you look at
this corner group last year, I mean, you had you know,
be in Saint Juice my Davis is even said, but
you've also I mean it seems like there's on paper
they've got some significant upgrades here. Trey looks like he's
really going to be able to step in. Is that
(14:43):
at that day one starting corner opposite of Latimore. So
I mean this year overall assessment on what do you
think about that group and what are they going to
do better compared to what they what that group was
able to do last year.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Yeah, I mean, I think they're going to be able
to limit big plays is what we hope, you know.
I think the secondary last year, they were very susceptible
to any time a Pro Bowl receiver or even a
solid receiver lined up on the other side of the field,
that home run threat seems to be there no matter
who they were facing, even when it was a running back,
(15:17):
you know, gashing through the defense, able to get fast there.
And I just think you look through this entire group,
not just have they improved from who they had last year.
I think all the guys they've improved on with have
looked good in camp so far this year. Lattimore looks healthy,
looks better, Trey Amos looks like he's going to be
good like Sarah still looks like he's taking a step forward.
(15:40):
And you know, not enough to be said about how
much Kwon Martin has stepped up as a leader. You
think back to his interception in the Lions game last year.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Will Harris is.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Looking like a good off season a position after people
were worried what are they going to do with Jeremy
Chin departing? And then we talked about the offensive line depth.
The secondary has been depth as well. With Jeremy Reeves
Jonathan Jones coming from New.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
England, they're definitely more well equipped to deal with that now.
Even you brought up about the point about moving different
guys running coverage, which I think is one of the
more fascinating stories about that group, because like, you lose
Jeremy Tennan free agency, but you also get a guy
and Will Harris who maybe doesn't as physical up at
the line of scrimmage, but does like you to maybe
(16:23):
diversify your coverage package a little bit. How much different
is that going to make the secondary look and maybe
allow Joe Wood Jr. To call some of the things
he originally wanted to call but couldn't last year.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
I think it makes a huge difference.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
Honestly, I think Joe Wood Junior last year it was
evident he didn't really trust his corners, and that's fine,
and honestly, probably he probably shouldn't have shouldn't have the
way the season started, especially with what Mike Evans and
Chris Godwin did in that opening game. I think you
started to trust them a little bit more as the
year went on. I think Mikey sanders Still's emergence had
(17:00):
to do a lot of it.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
But at the end of the year we really.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
Only saw center still on the outside because out of
necessity almost I mean, Latimore was on the other side,
but he was playing through some injuries and just the
rest of the depth wasn't there.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
The way it is this year, I think, barring everyone.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
Stays healthy, there's gonna be a lot of disguise, a
lot more movement, a lot of priests at movement. I
think there's just a lot of ways for them to
get creative in ways they weren't able to do that
last year, and I think that should really help early
on and the Once these guys get the confidence that
they need, I think this defense could be a lot
(17:35):
a lot better than it was a year before.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
I think on paper, like I've said a lot of
a lot of through this podcast, I think it does
make a lot of sense. We've seen the good the
good in practice, but I just I can't wait to
see what they do in a game. I can't wait
to see what they do against like a really good
rushing attack. I can't wait to see that first. You know,
Trey Ables gets them some looks against a number one
(17:59):
wide receiver. I hadn't really got a chance to see
that that much. Alex realth Quick he brought up Kwon
Martin and I think he's been a guy that this
coaches haven't really had their eye on. It seemed like
they've really been impressed with him. And then Joe Wait said,
I think it was there in Ota is that he
could he could be one of the best safeties in
the league. What about him has really impressed you? And
(18:19):
do you see him making that kind of jump that
the Joe Witt believes he can make.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Yeah, So I think I see this year as another
big jump coming for Kwon Martin. I think we saw
it from him at the end of last season. And
I think the big thing we see FORMA is not
just the ability to defend in the passing game, but
I think contribute as well stopping the run, and I
think that'll go hand in hand with the Commanders of
improving their front. So I think the versatility and then
(18:47):
on top of that, Dan Quinn has just talked about
the leadership that Kwon Martin has shown, so I think
on the field, off the field, you know, we've kind
of seen him grow these last several years.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Is one of those guys that was around when Ron Rivera.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
Was leading the team and is still around harving.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
A nice role for himself.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
So I think it'll also take the pressure off with
him with that other success and talent we see in
the secondary. So I think Kwon Martin is primed for
a pretty big jump this year and I'm excited to
see what he could do.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Yeah, me too.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
And you mentioned you mentioned the point about about him
being there when Ron was there, and I think, I mean,
I think I think he was objectively one of Ron
Rivera's better picks and saw you saw last year. I
think Joe had even said like it seemed like he
was maybe holding back a little bit in some areas,
and now he's just he has a better call of
the command of the defense. He under stands and he's
(19:37):
a little bit better and he's playing with more confidence.
And I think that's really the biggest key here. But
we're gonna move on to the final question here. Score updates.
I think I would give the point to Ethan because
I like the point that you made about being able
to move and diversify the coverage a little bit better
with because of the corner's safety's a wheel to move
around a bit more. So I'll give you a point there.
Ethan still leaves, but with this last question, last question
(20:00):
is going to be worth two points, so I'll still
have the chance to take the lead. And it's pretty simple.
Which player do you think is gonna have a big
game for the Commanders to pull out a win and
Alex will start off with you. So I think I'm
gonna go with Larry Tunsil.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
Honestly, you know he came in and we know what
he's capable of, we know the career he's had, but
we also know the pressure that's on Josh Connolly on
the other side. And if Larry tunsl can step up
and help with stopping that Giants front, helping us protecting
Jade Dale and allow Jayden to start off this season
(20:36):
on the right foot and go hand in hand with
I think Terry McLaurin also needs to have a good
start to the season, so I would go with Tunsil mainly,
but I think Terry McLaurin as my second guy there
for this week.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
Okay, I like both those answers, especially Larry Tunes the
one Ethan, We'll switch over to you, and I know
Alex technically took two, but if you want to expand
to Terry, you can go ahead the the ears.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
I'm actually gonna go with the guy opposite Terry, Deebo Samuel.
This is a guy who they traded for the spring
entering the last year of his deal.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
San Francisco didn't work.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Out that last year, requested a trade. He's in a
place where he can succeed. He got all the reps
with Jayden over the summer when Terry was gone.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
He's the guy that has everything to prove. There's a
ton of pressure on him.
Speaker 4 (21:25):
He's not only playing for the twenty twenty five Commanders,
but he's playing for his next contract in.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
His future in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
We've seen him be one of the league's best receivers
in twenty twenty one, when he had fourteen hundred receiving
yards and fourteen total touchdowns. I think eight we're rushing,
in six we're receiving. This is a guy that has
not been that same player the last three years. Injuries
have bothered him. He just hasn't had the same production Brandon.
I you kind of took over as the main guy
(21:52):
last year. He has a fresh start here. He has
a great opportunity, a great quarterback in Jayden and Daniels
that he's formed really nice chemistry with throughout training camp.
It's time to show that everything you've done this offseason
that you're in shape, you're ready to go, and you're
ready to produce like the elite receiver you claim to be.
I think a big game from Deebo Samuel Week one
(22:12):
could silence a lot of critics and also kind of
set up a recipe for success for this offense and
take it to another level.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
Wow, both of y'all brought the heat that those were
both excellent answers. I really like the points he made
with Devo because I mean, I think that he really
has a chance to really blow the top off of
this offense, especially with his yards after contact, the way
he can make yards after the catch. He is an
explosive weapon waiting to happen, and he's definitely one of
the players that I'm more excited to watch this season. Man,
(22:44):
this is really tough and I feel like I feel
like I'm I'm doing the one one person dirty with
this because both were just such great answers. Man, I
think we got to go all the way back to
