Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome to the Tickets the Draft Podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'm Logan Paulson here with just a guy, Jason and
as a reminder, we are always presented by Seakeeek. This summer,
Seakkeeek has your ticket to the best live concerts in
the DMV at Northwest Stadium. Seakeek the official primary ticketing
partner of Northwest Stadium. And Jason Man. We've waited all night.
It's twelve thirty in the morning and we've got the
pick for the Washington Panders.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
It is in.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
It's Josh Connerly Man and I am It was interesting,
you know, like when I saw the name flash up
on the screen. There's been times in the past where
I've kind of I felt my heart sink, like, oh,
I really don't like that player, but I felt like
this kind of warmth joy wash over me because I
really like the ceiling of that player, like the floor
of the player. And at twenty nine to get a
(00:54):
player like Josh Connerly feels like an amazing move by
Adam Peters and just being patient with your draft board.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeahbsolutely the tackle from Oregon. He look, you know what
I've been saying for a long time now, I know,
it's kind of hot, taky, and it's like a little
bit that I do. But lineman and quarterbacks, like, that's
how you really build in a draft, I think, and
then you can figure everything else out through free agency
and trades and whatnot. But you can never have enough lineman.
(01:20):
And when you are picking in the back of twenty
nine and you're waiting for things to fall to you,
there's nothing better than picking a solid offensive lineman, which
is exactly what Connor Lee is. So it's not a
sexy pick, right, there were a lot of well I
know you do. There are a lot of sexy players
that were out there, Like the Mike Greens of the world.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
We're sitting at they talk about the yeah, absolutely, let's go.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
So like I think, so the couple guys that are
still on the board that I think a lot of
fans are like, why didn't we take this player? So
we got Will Johnson, we got Mike Green, we got
Josh Shimmons. Okay, And it's funny during throughout the process,
tangentially on all of those players, I heard some type
of off field character concern and you know, as you know,
we've talked about this all the time. It could be
(02:04):
their twenty two and so you don't know the degree
of character concern.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah, And to be clear, like we're the only thing
that we get out of this draft process that we're
able to do is watch the tape, right and then
go see them in person, look at the combine and
their measurements.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Like that's really all we can do. But that's what
all these visits.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Are for, and what the interviews that the combine are
for is that they start and then they go when
they talk to scouts that are area scouts that go
up and they talk to the janitor, like you like
to say, like the actual coaches, you get the real
story on these kids. We're not privy to any of
that information. So normally on draft night, like you said, Logan,
and leading right up to it, you start getting these
whispers of like, oh, this kid's this, this kid's that,
(02:45):
and then well, we don't know any of that, but
then it seems like the teams kind of picks up
to when some of that.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Yeah, absolutely, I think the uh And that's something that
I've learned over the years of covering the draft. When
you see good football players like Will Johnson's film from
twenty twenty three is good. You had nine ers options, right,
He's one of the best cornerbacks in the country. When
you start seeing a slide like that. Mike Green led
the FPS in sacks. When you see him slide, Josh Simmons,
when you see him slide, he's one of the best,
most athletic offensive linemen in football. They all have questions, right,
(03:13):
some of it's off field stuff, some of it's injury related,
and so when fans some.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
Of it could be nothing. It's true, Like, that's true too, It's.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
True, it's a hundred. But I'm just saying, like it's funny.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
How like twenty four hours before I start making calls,
Like I make a couple of calls, talk to a
couple of friends, and all of a sudden, there's this
cloud over these types of players, and you don't know
how serious it is. But I think when you see
this type of slide for really talented football players, the
NFL is telling you that it's something that a lot
of teams aren't super comfortable with. And I think so
when like in the chat, for example, while we're doing
our show, people are like, let's take Will Johnson, Let's
(03:44):
take Mike Green, let's you know, all these football players,
and again the tape supports that. So if that's all
you're watching, that's what you get. But I trust that
Adam Peters has done his due diligence with the Scouts,
with the you know, the assistant GM Lance New Market,
They've done their due diligence and for whatever reason, say, hey,
these guys don't fit that commander tag. But I'll tell
you one guy who does, and it's Josh Connery.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Yeah, and that's what that's ultimately it, right, the commander
at tag, Like, we're still trying to build something here. Right,
We're in year two of the dan Quinn Adam Peters
era that hopefully lasts a long time, so it's still
in the infant stages hopefully, which means you're still building, right,
So you're not gonna look, there are teams that have
been around forever. The Patriots used to do this. They'll
(04:26):
take a risk on a guy that maybe there's a
question mark because the culture is built, the Patriot way
has already been established, and you got guys like Tom
Brady in the room and the Mike Rabrols and the
Bruskis that are like gonna keep those kids in line
and they're gonna help them mature along the way. While
we have some of that here, it's not fully it's
one year, right, So you're gonna pick a guy that
(04:47):
what is dan Quinn always say he wants one's a
guy that loves the game and just wants to compete, right,
And that's what Yeah, by all intensive purposes, that's what
you're getting from conner Lee. Now let's talk about the
tape with him. So why did he fall to this point?
And then why is he a good pick? So, I mean,
I'm not going to give an opinion on whether the
(05:08):
pick was good or not at twenty nine because I
don't know how these things kind of work, but I
can say that, like it feels like through the evaluation
process that a player this caliber, it feels like it's
right in where you would expect him to go.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yeah, and so obviously Josh Connerley, like we're really excited
about him, but he's not a perfect prospect. He's a
first round talent, there's no doubt in my mind. And
so like you know, he kind of is in that
tier three four for me, so like kind of borderline
first round, like basically after fifteen basically to forty is
kind of that rang that I thought he could go in.
And so if he went at forty, I would have
(05:43):
been a surprise, And if he went at fifteen, I
wouldn't have been surprised, because that's the kind of athlete
he is. And so when you look at the film,
look at the measurables. He's six', five, right so check
the hype box for. Tackles, right he's got a great.
Wingspan it's over eighty. Inches, right he's three hundred and twenty.
Pounds he ran a sub five flat. Forty just for some,
context when a big man so over three point fifteen
runs a sub five flat, forty it usually correlates a
(06:06):
lot with athletic. Success in THE, nfl he had the
fastest ten for an offensive lineman at the.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Combine he.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Jumped, well he's got thirty four and a half inch,
Arms so that length thing to play the position that
we always talk about super. Important and then when you
watch the film of him At Ohio state Or, oregon excuse,
me it's been a long.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Day.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Right he understands, angles he sets really, well he understands
timing of the, punch and he's quick and.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Explosive off the.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Football so WHEN i look at offensive lineman, Again i'm
looking for, athletes and so he was immediately a guy
THAT i circled really early in the process as a
guy that has like that has this, ceiling, right we
talk about the kind of the you, know The Will,
campbell's The Armann, membus the, banks and then you kind
of get into a no man's, land AND i felt
Like connory With Josh, simmons and again the off field
(06:49):
stuff and the injury stuff whatever that looks like makes
him a hard person to kind of negotiate. Here But
connorley was the next guy for, me and he's ahead
of guys like you, Know Arianta harristory for minnesot because
he can, move because he's, dynamic AND i think About
Cliff kingsbury, offense, Right so first, Off connelly can pass,
protect second, off he's dynamic as a, puller and he
can play in multiple, schemes, right play multiple, Positions AND
(07:12):
i think that's really where.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
The value is. Here he's like a very high floor
because he's got some positional.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Flexibility AND i think, ALSO i say the guy and
one of the things That Adam peter said he came
right after he made the, pick came in here interviewed
with Me, Be Mitch santana And Brian, colbert.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
And when check it out on the YouTube.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Page, yeah check it on the YouTube.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Page and one of the things that the first thing
he said is like he came to the thirty, visit
we loved.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Him we saw him at The Senier. Bowl we love the. Person.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Right the area of scouts sit on the table for
him and everybody fell in love with him as a human.
Being AND i think that's ultimately where you. Lie all
the measurable stuff checks out and then you love the.
Player AND i think that's to, me that's what taking
best player available means in this, situation absolutely.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
Right, Yeah and he had the fastest ten yard split
for an offensive linement at The combine this, year and that,
SPEED i, mean it shows up on. Tape he is
good to very good at almost, everything but he's not
elite at, Anything so that means high, floor, right and
he could Get he's going to, learn, right you would,
hope so that he could eventually be very very good
(08:16):
in a lot of.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Things and it's one of the one of those prospects
that feels like when you see him in, person like
we saw him at the Senior but that's one of
the other things about the. Seabole you walk on the,
field you see, him he looks kind of like. Silly
he's got a little baby face to. Him, Right he's
still kind of growing and thickening up and becoming denser and.
Stronger and that shows up a little bit on. Tape
but that makes me. Excited, like get him here With
Chad engleheart's strength coach, Here Like chad's going to get
(08:38):
him really, strong you, know get him With Bobby, johnson
the offensive line. Coach they're going to technically develop that.
Guy and SO i think, about, again the floor is
very high because of the things you talked, about but there's
very few players in this class offensive lineman that have
the ability to be something more, athletically and he checks that.
Box so to get a guy that gives you that
at twenty, nine he's a great person positional, flexibility and
(09:02):
the ceiling is. There think about as you move down the,
draft the ceiling gets shallower and shallower and shallower and.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Shallower. Yep so twenty nine.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
To get a guy that could do, THAT i think
it's pretty special.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
And you, know he was on the wrong side of
the viral video With Mike green where he got bull rushed.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Over that's.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
RIGHT i talked about this on our pod. EARLIER i
went back and watched it from my. Frame it was
not a great set by, him but it was he
basically tripped and then he ran it right back immediately
because he, tripped and he had no problem Handling Mike.
Green but that one didn't go viral because offensive lineman
is in sexy when they just stop a. Guy but
at The Senior, bowl that's the clip that like put
(09:39):
him out like. That he's one most that's most scene
is him getting quote unquote blown. Up but at The
Senior bowl he was. Solid he was Rocksy.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
And it's funny like when you go back and watch
The Senior bowl, game just as an, Example, Right So
connelly played left tackle At. Oregon, right he's right tackle
in that, clip so getting used to his footwork a little.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
Bit there's a bunch of guys there that we really.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Like Anthony, Belton, travis you, Know i'm trying to think
of the other guy's, name but there's a couple of
guys who are like. That when you watch the, game
the game that they played at the end of the,
week which was on. Film you can go watch, it it's.
Online he just looks like a different cut, athlete like
they're running like a. Screen he's he's got that kind
Of laramie tunsil Lane john like ability to get out
(10:21):
in space and hunt people. Down so that's SOMETHING i
think is, again you see that athletic. Ceiling then he
looked like the most comfortable and the most dominant player
when the bullets were real in the, game AND i
think that's something that you can't be. Ignored, again think
about the film he, Played Penn state Played Ohio.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
State all Those edgereutchers are going to get. DRAFTED i
was just going to bring that.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
UP i was literally in my notes right, here because,
look The giants took Up Dual, carter, right who's a fantastic, player,
Right and then what's The washington. Answer, okay we're gonna
Take connorly like the guy that did pretty darn. Good
and when they, LIKE i, Mean Abdull carter is very,
good he's going to get. His but for the most,
(11:01):
part if you go back and watch those offensive line
defensive line cutups from that he Handled Obdul carter very, well,
like he held his, ground and so if you're looking
at that right like and he's going to potentially be
a right, TACKLE i would write soon or.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
A tackle in camp like. Some but my point is
is that he's Going.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
We've seen him go against talent that is high level
in the, college so he's going to translate well. HERE
i think at the very least he will be a solid.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Player and it goes back to what you just, said
like the floor is high because he does everything, well
but the ceiling is also there because of the athletic.
Upside so And i'd also just think about what this
does For Jayden, daniels you, know what it does for this,
offense what it does For Cliff we talked about that
a little bit on the live stream during the, pick you.
Know AND i just think it gives you if he
hits and obviously he's got to.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Develop and got to mature and be a good. Pro
all those things have to.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Happen but if it does, HAPPEN i think about what
it does in terms of building that wall in front
Of Jayden, daniels you, Know AND i look at the
best offensive lines in Football detroit last, Year philadelphia last.
Year they invest capital.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
There, Right they've got a big trade.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
Piece they've got a couple of first round, picks a
couple of second round. Picks and when you look at this,
now look at this. Group Now Jarmy, tunzel who is
a top five tackle in THE. Nfl you've got Maybe
Brandon coleman at left. Guard you've Got biascia, center who
to me was one of the better centers in football when.
Healthy Sam cosmy a second round, pick and now you've
got a first round pick on the right.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Side like that is all of.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
A sudden a group That i'm trying to think of.
It but WHEN i played here In, washington like With Trent,
Williams Sean, lavow you, know like those kind of guys
that really Were Morgan moses at the right, Tackle like
you could just do so much more. Offensive you could
run the, football you can pass, protect AND i think
what that's going to do For, jayden but the entire
offense and Not Cliff coff's. Games and so it gets.
(12:51):
Me you, know you said it wasn't a sexy, pick
but the opportunity that it presents is.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Exciting, well it will.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
Get you very.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
EXCITED i highly recommend people go put on The Penn
state And oregon game and just watch it because that's
ob Cool carter going against Connor. Ley you're going to
see that again in this division twice this. Year but you,
know we talk about all the time about what did
The eagles? Do and they won The Super, Bowl so
a lot of people, say, well they won a Super,
bowl that's the, blueprint so we're going to replicate. It
(13:19):
the other thing you can look at is the team
that lost To Super bowl and they had the best
quarterback right by, far maybe going to be one of
the best of all, time if not the best of all.
Time if he Catches Tom. Brady the question is, like,
well what was difficult for? Them, well their offensive line
really really. Struggled So jane And daniels is, great, Right
he's a great. Quarterback hopefully he gets to that top
(13:41):
echelon where we're talking about him of greatest all the time.
Again but the only way you're going to get there
and be successful is you still have to have an offensive.
Line so if you stay young there and you draft well,
there then he's going to be protecting. You don't run
into a situation where you have with The chiefs where
they're now desperate to pick offensive linemen and try and
get offensive lineman Because Patrick mahomes can't do.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
Everything he's got to be.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Protected, no one hundred percent agree with, That AND i just, think,
like look At Patrick mahomes when he struggled the, most
it's when the offensive line's been a little bit banged. Up,
Yeah and we talked about this last, year like it
did feel like when you watched us watch The commanders
play Against, philly like they were hyper, competitive like really,
tough but there was a slight talent. Discrepancy AND i
think it's the right decision to try and close that
(14:25):
talent gap and really make sure that you can be
competitive on all. Front so Again i'm really excited about the. Pick,
again with any, pick there's a developmental, process BUT i.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Like the thought.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
PROCESS i like the character of the, Kid and think about,
it they know this kid incredibly. Well they talked to
him at The, draft they talked to him at The Senior,
bowl they brought him in for a thirty. Visit so
in terms of understanding how he's wired and how he,
ticks they, know AND i think like that's something that
is so incredibly valuable And adams when he and again
in that, interview make sure you check it out on
(14:55):
the YouTube. Page he came in and was, like the
area scouts sit on the table for, Him our college
scouts sit on table. Form the offensive line coach on table.
Form he even Said, cliff a couple of days before the,
draft wrote a little, note put it on his desk and,
said make sure you take The oregon.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Tackle that was a couple of days, ago you know
What i'm.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Saying so everybody seemed united in supportive in this, pick
AND i love that cohesion AND i love that thought.
Process and the great thing about it is, you as a,
fan can go watch him on film and see why
people are so excited about the.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Prospect before we get out of, HERE i want to
ask you a. Question why do you think we didn't trade?
Back because that was a big thing that everyone was talking,
about is we want we don't have the third round,
pick so let's figure this, out let's trade, back let's
grab more, capital especially in this type of. Draft but
we ended up sticking and. Picking so why didn't we do?
Speaker 4 (15:43):
That do you? Think?
Speaker 2 (15:44):
SO i do think obviously you look At philadelphia and
they wanted to trade. Up they traded up For Johad
campbell and they traded With Kansas. City so that was
their guy obviously in the. Draft AND i don't KNOW
i have any inside baseball on, this BUT i would
bet that they wanted to trade up ahead Of washington
to make sure that they got Cha Hot. HAMBLE i
think the one thing that you're worried about if You're
washington is that you trade Behind Kansas city and they Take,
(16:05):
connerly who is your number one player on the board
at that, moment and you're left hold in the.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Bag.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Right SO i think they identified a player that they.
Liked the trade partner was putting them in a position
where they were kind of moving. Out we talked about
those tiers all the, time moving out of that third
tier into the fourth tier where there's no offensive lineman,
available and it's kind of, like, oh, like let's just,
Stay we've got our, guy let's pick him and then move.
On and, again like people, say we could have got
more draft. CAPITAL i understand, that but if you've identified this,
(16:32):
guy and it sounds like from What Adam peters, said
that this was the guy that they wanted a twenty
nine or one of a couple of guys that wanted
to twenty. Nine why are we going to mess? Around
why do we in the same way that, like why
are we going to risk missing missing on our guy last?
Year why are we going to risk missing on? Him
especially when you Know Kansas city's a tackle the needy
team and if you have him as the next tackle in,
line just stick and pick and make yourself.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Right.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
Yes another thing That peter, said and make sure you
check out the interview he expands on this is that
they were concerned that maybe he would go to The
bears at.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
Ten so that's how high they thought of.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Him, right in the sense of like they were nervous
other teams were going to value him. High so when
a player like that starts falling, back when you start, thinking,
well this is a top ten player in the, draft
and he starts falling back and you're at twenty nine
and it's sitting right, There, yeah you could trade, back
but that guy this is the whole tier, thing. Right
we don't know what their tiers look, like but maybe
this guy is in their top, tier second, tier, Right
(17:30):
and so he's sitting there and now you're in the
spot where you're at the bottom, three starting to fall
in the fourth, tier and there's a two tiers in for,
you go for it because that's more value for you
now than two five tiers six tier picks. Later and
also something we don't think about with offensive tackles when
we first take him is it's the value. Pick right
(17:54):
if he ends up being a great, tackle WHICH i
hope he, is that's a lot of dollars coming down the,
line and that they are now saving.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Even if he's a mediocre tackle like the middle of the.
Road you got to pay those guys about thirty million
dollars year twenty.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
Five thirty million dollars.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Show he's getting that fifth year now, too right where he.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Is SO i do think this is really good about good.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Value SO i think understanding those, tiers understanding you those,
guys and AGAIN i think this sets up really nicely
to talk about maybe a little bit briefly about, tomorrow you,
know just in terms.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Of let's quickly preview it and then call it a.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Night so for, ME i think the thing THAT i
look at is people, like, oh they didn't get an,
Edge AND i just was reading through my edgeless and
so just so we got, It Donovan azarak who's still.
Available Nick scord is still, available and In JACKSON j
two two Umlau Ola Femi oldaisio who they have met
with on a thirty. VISIT i love, him love him,
Right princellham And Yellen Brady swinson FROM, Lsu Jordan, Birch Jack,
(18:43):
saw and Then David walker who they also had a
thirty visit.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
With so all of those, GUYS i think it's deeper. There,
yes so you.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
Can still get your. Edge you probably can still get, it.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
AND i think you could probably still get a corner
and it's gonna be a little more, challenging but definitely
there's there's an opportunity there to get a good edge
player that fits in terms of like what a commander,
is because what what the first Thing ap said when
he came in here was, like we want. Commanders David
walker he's here on a thirty, Visit oladeisio on a thirty.
Visit i'm after seeing both those guys at The Senior,
bold didn't they feel like commanders when you watch the? Play,
yeah and there's other.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
Guys, Too, yeah there's other guys, Too and you never.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
KNOW i, mean maybe they trade out of that second
pick and they grab a couple of third round picks
because you don't know how the board's going.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
To, sure and you don't know what their board.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
Is so if If edges keep pushing like they did,
tonight maybe it's, like oh, okay and so we can
trade back. Again like, so the point is is that
just because they didn't trade back in the first round
doesn't mean that they're not going to make moves in
the second, round or that the second round pick that
they get isn't going to be a high value where
it wasn't worth maybe trading. Up, yeah or so you,
(19:45):
also with all of, this it's easy for anybody to
get ON x or say to their, friend, oh, well
we should have traded. Back the other thing is when
you when you want to go dance with, somebody you
need a, partner which means that somebody has to say to,
THEMSELVES i need to get the this spot to get a,
player and everybody's thinking in that same area that we
were in the same way we. Are when you have
(20:07):
five teams clunt together that are all saying we want
to trade, back, yes, yeah that means you need to
fight to find five people that are willing to trade.
It that doesn't normally happen when you're clumped like. That
so that's why there's not really that many trades in
the back of the first and second round of the.
