You have two ears and one mouth. Listening is twice as important as speaking. We must listen to hear and understand, not to respond. This skill is called active listening. It may be the fastest way to grow your communication mastery!

Just as correct diagnosis aids treatment for disease, so recognizing distress flares quickly promotes healthier communication. Rather than throwing distress flares, I coach clients to say “I need help with…” or “I need help because…” This invites the other person into your understanding of the causes of the distress and gives them opportunity to demonstrate care.
