“Bless” is a word often used and rarely defined. Therefore, we want to try to study some of God’s blessings in Genesis. At the beginning, God blesses creatures with the capacity to flourish— to be fruitful, to multiply, and to abound. Every time we see life spreading and thriving in creation, it’s a sign of God’s blessing at work. Humans were given an additional blessing: responsibility over the earth. God invited humanity to be partners in extending blessing everywhere. Sometimes humans get it wrong and the blessing is distorted.
In this series, we’ll explore Genesis through the lens of blessing—what it means for us, and how we are called to live as participants in God’s blessing to the world.
This week we talk about how sometimes we bargain for blessing.
