Samuel: Hey everyone. Welcome to (00:01):
undefined

Samuel: Community Routes, a place where (00:03):
undefined

Samuel: we gather in community to talk (00:05):
undefined

Samuel: about mental health so we can (00:06):
undefined

Samuel: travel the journey of life (00:08):
undefined

Samuel: together. (00:09):
undefined

Samuel: I'm Samuel Richards. (00:10):
undefined

Julie: I'm Julie Richards. (00:12):
undefined

Sarah: I'm Sarah Wakefield. (00:14):
undefined

Samuel: And boom, we're back. (00:17):
undefined

Samuel: It's been a year, but we wanted (00:20):
undefined

Samuel: to kind of take this moment to (00:22):
undefined

Samuel: reconnect with you, you know, (00:24):
undefined

Samuel: maybe go over this past year and (00:26):
undefined

Samuel: what's ahead. (00:28):
undefined

Julie: We've been talking together about how sometimes any of us (00:30):
undefined

Julie: need to sometimes step back a little bit, regroup, rest up. (00:35):
undefined

Julie: We even have times of, um, withdrawal or being overly (00:40):
undefined

Julie: involved in a lot of things. (00:48):
undefined

Julie: But this past year in (00:49):
undefined

Julie: particular, I think has been a (00:51):
undefined

Julie: lot for those of us living in (00:53):
undefined

Julie: the US and, um, lots of (00:55):
undefined

Julie: political changes, lots of (00:59):
undefined

Julie: things happening that are (01:00):
undefined

Julie: impacting us day to day, and (01:03):
undefined

Julie: continually things happening in (01:06):
undefined

Julie: the news that are mentally (01:08):
undefined

Julie: draining. (01:11):
undefined

Julie: So, um, we're just acknowledging together and with you all (01:12):
undefined

Julie: because we do we do miss being together, and we do miss (01:17):
undefined

Julie: reaching out to you all. (01:22):
undefined

Julie: And, um, we just wanted to kind (01:24):
undefined

Julie: of name for just a moment how (01:27):
undefined

Julie: time is so mysterious that, uh, (01:30):
undefined

Julie: time can either go really, (01:35):
undefined

Julie: really fast where we're (01:36):
undefined

Julie: surprised it's been a whole (01:38):
undefined

Julie: year, and other times that days (01:39):
undefined

Julie: are long or seasons are hard, (01:42):
undefined

Julie: and that we really just don't go (01:44):
undefined

Julie: through time as it's happening (01:47):
undefined

Julie: because there are so many layers (01:49):
undefined

Julie: to it. (01:51):
undefined

Julie: So we've been reflecting a (01:52):
undefined

Julie: little bit about how emotionally (01:54):
undefined

Julie: and psychologically, (01:57):
undefined

Julie: relationally, sometimes even (01:59):
undefined

Julie: unconsciously. (02:01):
undefined

Julie: We have just too much to do and (02:02):
undefined

Julie: too much to feel, too much to (02:06):
undefined

Julie: notice, too much to process, (02:07):
undefined

Julie: that we don't have time to do, (02:10):
undefined

Julie: that we don't, um, pause to (02:12):
undefined

Julie: reflect together and to really, (02:14):
undefined

Julie: truly tend to what's coming up (02:17):
undefined

Julie: for us. (02:19):
undefined

Julie: So we're looking forward to being back with you all and with (02:20):
undefined

Julie: each other, just to tend to it, to reflect together, to come (02:24):
undefined

Julie: back to the basics of things that are very foundational to (02:29):
undefined

Julie: our mental health, things that we practice really well for a (02:33):
undefined

Julie: while and sometimes get tired of keeping up with. (02:39):
undefined

Julie: I know for me, I've been someone who just really enjoys yoga as a (02:43):
undefined

Julie: practice, and I take a break for a while, and sometimes I take (02:50):
undefined

Julie: too long of a break. (02:55):
undefined

Julie: And so, um, I've been coming (02:56):
undefined

Julie: back lately to some Meditation (02:59):
undefined

Julie: with the calm app and wanting to (03:02):
undefined

Julie: get back into some stretching (03:05):
undefined

Julie: and some yoga, and also just (03:07):
undefined

Julie: this gathering with the three of (03:08):
undefined

Julie: us here at Community Roots, as (03:11):
undefined

Julie: well as our community of of (03:13):
undefined

Julie: listeners who are here with us (03:15):
undefined

Julie: to. (03:17):
undefined

Sarah: I just want to thank our (03:21):
undefined

Sarah: community of listeners for their (03:22):
undefined

Sarah: continued listening. (03:24):
undefined

Sarah: It's amazing, Julie Sam, that we have had a year. (03:29):
undefined

Sarah: And Julie, with what you were saying about how we we can't (03:33):
undefined

Sarah: really process time. (03:36):
undefined

Sarah: You know, I was thinking about (03:39):
undefined

Sarah: emotions and how when I'm happy, (03:40):
undefined

Sarah: time seems to be completely (03:43):
undefined

Sarah: filled. (03:46):
undefined

Sarah: And when I'm stressed, time (03:48):
undefined

Sarah: takes on a whole different (03:53):
undefined

Sarah: meaning. (03:55):
undefined

Sarah: If I'm if I'm stressed, it (03:56):
undefined

Sarah: usually goes by too fast or not (03:58):
undefined

Sarah: fast enough. (04:01):
undefined

Sarah: And if I'm sad. (04:03):
undefined

Samuel: Simultaneously. (04:04):
undefined

Sarah: Yeah. Simultaneously. And then if. (04:05):
undefined

Sarah: When I'm sad and grieving, time seems to stand still. (04:07):
undefined

Sarah: Um, so. (04:12):
undefined

Sarah: So getting back into the swing (04:15):
undefined

Sarah: of things, I mean, it took us (04:18):
undefined

Sarah: how many takes to get started (04:20):
undefined

Sarah: today. (04:22):
undefined

Sarah: Like, it's that getting back (04:23):
undefined

Sarah: into movement, back into (04:26):
undefined

Sarah: practice. (04:31):
undefined

Julie: Mhm. (04:32):
undefined

Sarah: But I think that also that also reflects how difficult of a year (04:33):
undefined

Sarah: it has been in (04:39):
undefined

Julie: Mhm. (04:41):
undefined

Sarah: all different simultaneously experiences of time. (04:41):
undefined

Sarah: And I feel like I'm finally ready after this whole year. (04:49):
undefined

Sarah: I've, I feel like I'm finally (04:52):
undefined

Sarah: ready to expend energy that I (04:54):
undefined

Sarah: haven't had for so long and to (04:57):
undefined

Sarah: have the mental capacity to give (05:02):
undefined

Sarah: up. (05:06):
undefined

Julie: And there's so much validation in that to be able to name the (05:08):
undefined

Julie: hard and how things are. (05:11):
undefined

Julie: Sometimes they throw you off track. (05:13):
undefined

Julie: I mean, even the best of intentions, of things we want to (05:17):
undefined

Julie: do or to practice, it can be hard to juggle all the things. (05:20):
undefined

Sarah: My. (05:26):
undefined

Julie: It can be hard to do them. (05:26):
undefined

Julie: And I guess that's that is why we call it a practice. (05:28):
undefined

Julie: You know, in meditation it's (05:31):
undefined

Julie: something of you start noticing (05:32):
undefined

Julie: and you start picking up on (05:36):
undefined

Julie: little things. (05:39):
undefined

Julie: You talked about that as being a practice for something that you (05:41):
undefined

Julie: appreciate as noticing. (05:45):
undefined

Julie: Um, noticing good things or (05:47):
undefined

Julie: noticing small details of things (05:51):
undefined

Julie: that. (05:53):
undefined

Samuel: Yeah, (05:56):
undefined

Julie: Um. (05:57):
undefined

Samuel: even what we're about to do now, (05:57):
undefined

Samuel: it kind of reminds me of the (05:58):
undefined

Samuel: point. (06:00):
undefined

Samuel: I liked your point of yoga (06:00):
undefined

Samuel: because it reminds me of this (06:02):
undefined

Samuel: point. (06:03):
undefined

Samuel: I don't know if your yoga instructor does this, but you (06:03):
undefined

Samuel: might take a moment in your meditation or just yoga practice (06:07):
undefined

Samuel: to just close your eyes and just be laying on the mat. (06:11):
undefined

Samuel: And then after a couple of minutes, then the yoga (06:15):
undefined

Samuel: instructor is like, all right, now start to feel your toes and (06:18):
undefined

Samuel: wiggle your toes. (06:22):
undefined

Samuel: And that's kind of where we're (06:24):
undefined

Samuel: at of just like, oh, a waking up (06:25):
undefined

Samuel: of some ways because, yeah, I (06:27):
undefined

Samuel: mean, all three of us have hit (06:30):
undefined

Samuel: on this. (06:31):
undefined

Samuel: It has been a hard year, and (06:32):
undefined

Samuel: it's wild how it's both flown (06:33):
undefined

Samuel: by. (06:36):
undefined

Samuel: And, um, you know, felt (06:37):
undefined

Samuel: enormously long at the same (06:40):
undefined

Samuel: time. (06:42):
undefined

Samuel: So, uh, in that practice of (06:43):
undefined

Samuel: meditation, you know, and, uh, (06:46):
undefined

Samuel: yoga, as we kind of take the (06:49):
undefined

Samuel: time to reawaken ourselves and (06:51):
undefined

Samuel: refocus ourselves, uh, we're (06:54):
undefined

Samuel: also looking to name, you know, (06:57):
undefined

Samuel: the next steps and what that (07:00):
undefined

Samuel: looks like. (07:02):
undefined

Samuel: um, something we were talking (07:03):
undefined

Samuel: about, uh, for this next (07:05):
undefined

Samuel: iteration. (07:07):
undefined

Samuel: And what you might come to (07:08):
undefined

Samuel: expect is episodes that you (07:09):
undefined

Samuel: could listen on your daily (07:12):
undefined

Samuel: commute. (07:14):
undefined

Samuel: You know, if you're going or driving into work or finding (07:15):
undefined

Samuel: that time just to take, you know, a little bit of extra time (07:18):
undefined

Samuel: to think about the basics. (07:21):
undefined

Samuel: You know, it's kind of applicable today that we're (07:23):
undefined

Samuel: talking about time because that's one of the basics. (07:25):
undefined

Samuel: You know, um, some other things we want to talk about is breath (07:29):
undefined

Samuel: or feeding yourself. (07:34):
undefined

Samuel: Um, and something even this year (07:36):
undefined

Samuel: that we want to talk about is (07:39):
undefined

Samuel: holiday help, how to Survive the (07:40):
undefined

Samuel: holidays, one of a cr sort of (07:42):
undefined

Samuel: classic, um, but, uh, so, you (07:44):
undefined

Samuel: know, as we kind of look into (07:51):
undefined

Samuel: the future, I also want to talk (07:52):
undefined

Samuel: maybe a little bit about a call (07:54):
undefined

Samuel: to action. (07:56):
undefined

Samuel: You know, uh, in these episodes sometime we've taken a moment of (07:58):
undefined

Samuel: pause to reflect on a of gratitude or a mantra. (08:01):
undefined

Samuel: Something we are talking about (08:05):
undefined

Samuel: is, you know, how do we make (08:07):
undefined

Samuel: some of these lessons (08:10):
undefined

Samuel: actionable? (08:11):
undefined

Samuel: And, um, so I'm just kind of (08:13):
undefined

Samuel: looking forward to some of the (08:16):
undefined

Samuel: new changes we're looking at, (08:17):
undefined

Samuel: you know, this next iteration of (08:19):
undefined

Samuel: community roots. (08:21):
undefined

Samuel: Just, um, you know, taking advantage of the time we've got (08:22):
undefined

Samuel: and the lessons we've sort of learned this year and turning (08:26):
undefined

Samuel: that into rubber hits the road. (08:30):
undefined

Samuel: So do any other thoughts come to (08:33):
undefined

Samuel: mind, or do we want to talk (08:35):
undefined

Samuel: about this week's kind of call (08:36):
undefined

Samuel: to action before the next (08:38):
undefined

Samuel: episode? (08:40):
undefined

Julie: I just appreciate the the growth (08:42):
undefined

Julie: that happens when we let (08:45):
undefined

Julie: something unfold or evolve, (08:46):
undefined

Julie: because (08:49):
undefined

Samuel: Mm. (08:50):
undefined

Julie: this is authenticity at its (08:50):
undefined

Julie: finest as just we're on the path (08:53):
undefined

Julie: with you all and walking and (08:56):
undefined

Julie: living in the same climates that (08:59):
undefined

Julie: you are. (09:02):
undefined

Julie: And. (09:03):
undefined

Julie: taking lessons from the day to day. (09:05):
undefined

Julie: And sometimes we see that in nature. (09:07):
undefined

Julie: We see that in news, we see that in conversation. (09:10):
undefined

Julie: We see that in gathering, in community and the connections (09:13):
undefined

Julie: that we're making. (09:20):
undefined

Julie: It's like we if we can be, if we can learn how to be more present (09:21):
undefined

Julie: and show up to the extent that we are able, um, there's a (09:26):
undefined

Julie: rhythm in that. (09:32):
undefined

Julie: There's a flow in that that is (09:33):
undefined

Julie: really meaningful and really (09:35):
undefined

Julie: worth living. (09:38):
undefined

Julie: So I'm (09:41):
undefined

Samuel: Collective (09:42):
undefined

Julie: looking forward (09:42):
undefined

Samuel: heartbeat. (09:42):
undefined

Julie: to that. (09:43):
undefined

Julie: Yeah, it is a collective heartbeat that we are not alone (09:43):
undefined

Julie: and we are connected to more than just ourselves. (09:47):
undefined

Julie: And we're just here to notice that together and to lean in (09:51):
undefined

Julie: and, um, hopefully be a voice of encouragement and hope and life (09:56):
undefined

Julie: and connection and relationship. (10:04):
undefined

Sarah: I love the the space that you (10:11):
undefined

Sarah: guys are creating for us to be (10:13):
undefined

Sarah: where we are and to be to (10:16):
undefined

Sarah: unfold. (10:18):
undefined

Sarah: I love that because it makes it seem it allows this period not (10:19):
undefined

Sarah: to have been, um, I don't want to say wasted, but it allows. (10:24):
undefined

Sarah: It gives. (10:30):
undefined

Sarah: Purpose and meaning to the times (10:34):
undefined

Sarah: when we can't, um, when we have (10:36):
undefined

Sarah: to pull back and have to tend to (10:40):
undefined

Sarah: ourselves. (10:43):
undefined

Sarah: It's not time that is just thrown away. (10:44):
undefined

Sarah: It is. (10:49):
undefined

Sarah: There is a purpose. (10:51):
undefined

Sarah: There is. (10:52):
undefined

Sarah: Growth happening when we can't even when we can't see it. (10:56):
undefined

Samuel: I also like the idea of (11:01):
undefined

Samuel: unfolding that it might like, (11:02):
undefined

Samuel: you know, there's a process to (11:04):
undefined

Samuel: unfolding. (11:05):
undefined

Samuel: It isn't just like, you know, a balloon that's just like, bam, (11:06):
undefined

Samuel: there's a balloon. (11:09):
undefined

Samuel: You know, it's something that kind of, you know, it's like an (11:11):
undefined

Samuel: inhale and exhale. (11:13):
undefined

Samuel: It takes a moment to accomplish. (11:15):
undefined

Sarah: Well (11:19):
undefined

Julie: I (11:19):
undefined

Sarah: and (11:19):
undefined

Samuel: Um. (11:19):
undefined

Julie: was (11:19):
undefined

Sarah: we (11:19):
undefined

Julie: recently (11:19):
undefined

Sarah: reference (11:19):
undefined

Julie: given. (11:20):
undefined

Julie: Go ahead. (11:21):
undefined

Sarah: we (11:21):
undefined

Julie: Sarah. (11:21):
undefined

Sarah: reference plants so often in our community. (11:22):
undefined

Julie: I was going (11:25):
undefined

Sarah: Roots. (11:25):
undefined

Julie: to give my plant story. (11:25):
undefined

Julie: That's exactly what I was going to say. (11:26):
undefined

Julie: I was just (11:27):
undefined

Sarah: Perfect. (11:28):
undefined

Julie: given this beautiful clipping from a good friend and person. (11:28):
undefined

Julie: I really look up to a whole lot. (11:35):
undefined

Julie: That's this beautiful leaf that is like purple on one side and (11:37):
undefined

Julie: green and shimmery on the other side, and left it in like water (11:42):
undefined

Julie: for a month, (11:48):
undefined

Samuel: Mm. (11:50):
undefined

Julie: six weeks or more to try to give it some time to make some roots. (11:50):
undefined

Julie: And I recently just transplanted that to put it in soil. (11:55):
undefined

Julie: And it's a bumpy start. (12:00):
undefined

Julie: Like I'm hoping it's gonna make it. (12:02):
undefined

Julie: It's been (12:04):
undefined

Samuel: Mm. (12:05):
undefined

Julie: tender. (12:06):
undefined

Julie: And, you know, I think that's that's a visual too, of like new (12:07):
undefined

Julie: beginnings that are (12:14):
undefined

Sarah: Thank (12:14):
undefined

Julie: evolving, (12:15):
undefined

Sarah: you very much. (12:15):
undefined

Julie: evolving are sometimes also like, (12:15):
undefined

Sarah: Thank (12:18):
undefined

Julie: okay, (12:18):
undefined

Sarah: you. (12:19):
undefined

Julie: it's hard to take a step. (12:19):
undefined

Julie: It's hard to transition into (12:20):
undefined

Julie: something new and to kind of (12:25):
undefined

Julie: come out of our shell a little (12:26):
undefined

Julie: bit and to lean into whatever (12:28):
undefined

Julie: messiness or ambiguity life has (12:33):
undefined

Julie: to offer. (12:36):
undefined

Julie: We're showing up for that, too, and (12:36):
undefined

Sarah: Mm. (12:38):
undefined

Julie: I think that matters. (12:38):
undefined

Julie: And maybe where you are today, (12:40):
undefined

Julie: if you're listening to us, (12:42):
undefined

Julie: you're wondering how to face the (12:44):
undefined

Julie: holidays. (12:46):
undefined

Julie: You're wondering how to, um, keep showing up. (12:46):
undefined

Julie: And, um, we're here in that spot (12:51):
undefined

Julie: with you, and we're walking it (12:55):
undefined

Julie: together. (12:57):
undefined

Samuel: We are definitely walking it together. (13:00):
undefined

Samuel: Uh, we don't have some sort of futuristic insight or anything. (13:03):
undefined

Samuel: It is definitely a journey. (13:07):
undefined

Samuel: Um, well, uh, before we let you go, let's talk about the, uh, (13:10):
undefined

Samuel: call to action for next week. (13:15):
undefined

Samuel: So community roots has always been like a place where we (13:17):
undefined

Samuel: imagined, you know, drinking cups of coffee, uh, together as (13:22):
undefined

Samuel: a group and just having conversations about, you know, (13:26):
undefined

Samuel: mental health and just coming together as a community. (13:29):
undefined

Samuel: And so this one was mom's idea, (13:32):
undefined

Samuel: you know, finding something warm (13:35):
undefined

Samuel: for next week, you know, finding (13:37):
undefined

Samuel: a way, maybe even during this (13:39):
undefined

Samuel: episode. (13:41):
undefined

Samuel: How can you find the warmth (13:42):
undefined

Samuel: where you are, you know, is that (13:43):
undefined

Samuel: a blanket that you throw on (13:45):
undefined

Samuel: yourself? (13:46):
undefined

Samuel: Is that the cup of coffee you've got in your hand or tea? (13:47):
undefined

Samuel: Uh, is that snuggling up just next to your dog or your cat? (13:51):
undefined

Samuel: Like, uh, Sarah has, uh, and just, you know, in this season, (13:55):
undefined

Samuel: appreciating the warmth and just taking that time to appreciate (14:01):
undefined

Samuel: the things around you. (14:05):
undefined

Samuel: Um, if you do those things and (14:07):
undefined

Samuel: you also find that you have a (14:11):
undefined

Samuel: moment of pause, reach out to (14:12):
undefined

Samuel: us. (14:14):
undefined

Samuel: We would love to. (14:15):
undefined

Samuel: As we're kind of planning this next journey. (14:16):
undefined

Samuel: We want to hear from you. (14:19):
undefined

Samuel: You know what do your breaths look like? (14:21):
undefined

Samuel: What do your steps look like (14:23):
undefined

Samuel: that you want to hear more about (14:24):
undefined

Samuel: or discover? (14:26):
undefined

Samuel: Um, those are all good stuff. (14:28):
undefined

Samuel: So next week, let's all, you know, maybe take a moment to (14:30):
undefined

Samuel: appreciate what's around us. (14:34):
undefined

Samuel: Where's the warmth? (14:36):
undefined

Samuel: Where's the comfort? (14:37):
undefined

Samuel: You know, maybe if you're in a hot place, where's just the soft (14:38):
undefined

Samuel: rather than the warmth? (14:42):
undefined

Samuel: Even the sun is great. (14:44):
undefined

Samuel: Um. And then we'd love to hear from you, too. (14:46):
undefined

Samuel: Uh, so. (14:50):
undefined

Samuel: Yeah. (14:51):
undefined

Samuel: Folks, um, wanted to thank, uh. (14:52):
undefined

Samuel: Yeah. (14:55):
undefined

Samuel: Go for it. (14:55):
undefined

Samuel: Mom didn't (14:56):
undefined

Julie: I (14:56):
undefined

Samuel: want (14:56):
undefined

Julie: was (14:57):
undefined

Samuel: to leave (14:57):
undefined

Julie: just (14:57):
undefined

Samuel: you hanging (14:57):
undefined

Julie: gonna say (14:57):
undefined

Samuel: there. (14:57):
undefined
