Jessica K. is a wedding photographer from Detroit. She shared a story of a difficult client experience that happened nearly 10 years ago. In 2009, a close family friend asked Jessica, who was an art student at the time with no professional photography experience, to photograph her wedding. Although hesitant, Jessica agreed after the client insisted. Jessica rented equipment, designed invitations, and photographed the engagement, bridal shower, and wedding at no cost as a favor to her friend. After the wedding, Jessica sent an invoice for $300, a very low amount. The client refused to pay, claiming the photos were blurry and unprofessional. She said Jessica had agreed to do the work for free, there was no contract, and she would not allow Jessica to use any photos publicly. Jessica felt taken advantage of and hurt by her friendās actions. She sued the client in small claims court at the advice of a family member, asking for $1,500. However, without a written contract, the judge ruled in favor of the client. Jessica learned a valuable lesson about always using written contracts for business to prevent misunderstandings and taken advantage of clients. Although the experience was upsetting, Jessica has forgiven her former friend and wishes her well. The story serves as a cautionary tale for others in business about the importance of contracts.Ā
