“Buddhism, at most, is ⅙ religion and ⅚ educational. Buddhism is realism, meaning that the more you know about reality, the happier you will be and the less you know about reality, the more miserable you will be. Ignorance is no longer bliss.”
On this episode, I am joined by Robert Thurman, the first western ordained monk by His Holiness the Dalai Lama with nearly four decades worth of teaching experience at Columbia University. Bob was named by the NYT as the nation’s leading expert on Tibetan Buddhism and has previously been listed by TIME Magazine as one of American's top 25 influential people. He is the founder of two non-profits, Tibetan House US and The American Institute for Buddhist Studies.
Robert and I discuss how Buddhism differs from religion, his experience on becoming a monk, what’s unique about the human experience compared to animals or God, what happens when we die according to Buddha, the significance of our dreams when we sleep, what role natural substances play in true enlightenment, the nature of our reality in relation to quantum physics, and how to experience bliss/nirvana.
