SPEAKER_00 (00:08):
Hey, welcome to this
new mini series I'm creating.
It's called Surf Check.
I really wanted to do thisbecause we've got the podcast,
we've got social media, butthere's nothing that's really
like kind of keeping you in theloop on a timely basis.
So here we are.
Welcome to the Surf Check.
I'm Lora Day.
I did not grow up in surfing, soI created the Surf Society, a
(00:31):
women's surfing community wherewe get together to learn more,
surf better, and live happy forwomen who didn't grow up in
surfing just like me and aresuper stoked to improve.
Today is May 1st.
Happy May.
Thank you for joining me on thisnew series.
We'll see how it goes.
Finding Flow It's reallyinspired by being able to watch
(01:17):
people surf or maybe you watch abunch of reels or clips on
Instagram or YouTube.
You really see like thatgraceful movement of somebody on
a wave where they just look likethey're connected, right?
They're connected with the wave.
I talked about this topic withone of our mentors in the Surf
Society, Paul Spooner.
And he said, yeah, this is allabout learning how to connect a
wave through a series of turns.
(01:40):
So this quarter, we're focusingon the bottom turn.
the top turn and the cutback.
What are the mechanics of theseturns and how do you link them
together to find your flow andfind that gracefulness on the
wave?
April was all dedicated to thebottom turn.
We did two workshops that werereally great.
We got together, broke down thebottom turn with our Surf
(02:03):
Society mentor, Paul Spooner.
And then we had a follow-upevent after that called Kooks
and Legends, one of my favoriteevents at the Surf Society.
Essentially, we pull clips fromInstagram that we're really
inspired by or clips that any ofour members want to bring in.
And we break it down in like areally informal video analysis,
question and answer type ofenvironment.
(02:25):
And it's really lovely becauseyou get to hear what other women
are working on and how theyinterpret these maneuvers.
And it helps you think ofsurfing in a different way.
It just gives you an opportunityto ask open-ended questions with
a mentor, with somebody who isthat legend.
If you didn't grow up surfingyou didn't have that person
right so we had the bottom turnworkshop and then this open Q&A
(02:49):
and you get to use thatinformation and let it marinate
together and spend this timethis month just thinking about
your turns it's like such agreat environment if you're
trying to get better at surfingand you don't know what to do
that's what we do we come upwith the program and you come in
and you join us in thiscommunity environment to just
learn more get better get adviceand be supported by an amazing
(03:12):
group of women I'm going to reada review from the Kusum Legends
that we had this last weekbecause it was so good.
So Lisa, thank you, Lisa.
I love tonight's session withPaul.
So appreciate having an expertshare their knowledge with live
footage of women surfing.
So important to have access tothis.
And I so thank you.
And Lisa, you are so welcome.
(03:34):
Anyways, as for the ServiceSociety, our upcoming events
will be going into the top turnin May and also the cutback in,
what's the next month?
June.
Oh my God, we're almost in June.
But coming up next week, we'redoing a core challenge with Dr.
Alexis Pierulli.
She's going to Work us for sixweeks and we chose a core
(03:57):
challenge for this quarterbecause it goes hand in hand
with finding your flow, likehaving that core stability to be
able to be on the wave and makethe wave and surf it gracefully.
For you ladies in the SurfSociety, you're going to want to
participate because you mightwin some stuff.
you're not in the Surf Societyand you're like, yeah, I want to
(04:19):
work on my core too, you cancome join us.
I'll put a link in the shownotes if you're listening to the
podcast or in the description.
I want to tell you how the SurfSociety is affecting my personal
surfing and share a little bitof insight with what we've been
learning and like how it worksin my sessions, what kind of
differences I see, becauseobviously I'm I created this
(04:40):
community and like I did itbecause I wanted to get better
at surfing.
This last couple weeks, theweather hasn't been great.
It's spring in California.
So we've got a very earlymorning window and then like
sometimes a lot of wind andwe've had very low tides in the
morning before the wind comes upand it just hasn't been ideal.
So I've only gone out a coupletimes.
I'm primarily like alongboarder.
(05:01):
So one of the days I did go outand I just wanted to try to get
some footage for fun and it wasreally small.
So I took this out with me.
It was really hard to surf withthis.
I've never done that before andit's really difficult.
So thank you guys who suggestedto me to do like the mouthpiece.
If you're listening to thepodcast, this is a GoPro case
with a big handle.
So I'll put some footage ofthat.
You can see me trying to figureout how to surf with one of
(05:24):
those.
So that was one of my sessions.
And then just to contrast that,I've also been trying out
different boards and one of theboards i've been riding lately
is a 710 fish from almond andcompletely different and i love
how it ties into what we'retalking about at the surf
society with finding flowbecause the flow and those two
boards so different since iprimarily ride longboard a lot i
(05:47):
feel super comfortable with theturns and longboards usually
move really slow and And thefish, so different, you get into
the wave and it just like throwsyou out.
And if you're not ready to turnor you don't really have those
mechanics down, you kind of misssome of the best parts of the
wave.
And I have loved just thinkingabout like the difference of the
(06:10):
switching up the boards, thestyles and what it requires of
me.
One of the things that we havereally been focusing on in the
Surf Society, it's called ourtechnique development portion.
Every single quarter, we giveyou like one task, one thing.
If you show up to the workshopsand you're like, this is too
much.
I don't know.
This is so much info.
You get one thing that you getto work on and you can just take
(06:32):
that with you all quarter.
And the goal is that you get toimprove by focusing on that one
thing.
So our technique developmentthis quarter has been making the
wave.
I Yes, we all want to do thesemaneuvers.
We want to do these turns.
We want to do these things.
But it's about taking a holisticapproach to surfing the wave and
milking it as long as possible.
(06:53):
I love this because as Paulsaid, talks about it in the
workshop you don't have to likedeeply focus on trying to do a
maneuver to learn it and if youfocus on making the wave and
taking this holistic approach tosurfing the wave your body and
your brain will take all of thatexperience as information and
(07:15):
processing so then when you goback to actually try to do the
maneuvers and start to learnthese maneuvers you already have
a sense of flow that's somethingi've been thinking about in
terms of what that means for alongboard and what that means
for something more like a fish.
Very different style of surfingfor me.
I think the best thing is wealways have a space in the Surf
(07:36):
Society to go back and talkabout these concepts.
You can go out in your session, gather this information and come
back and you're not alone withit.
You're not sitting there justtrying to figure it out.
You have somebody that you cantalk to, whether it's the other
ladies in the group that justmake you feel seen because
they're going through the samething or it's asking a mentor or
listening to the conversation orwatching the the replays.
(07:57):
It's a really special place.
If you are wanting to get betterat surfing and you feel like
you're stuck, you feel likeyou've plateaued, you don't know
what to do, next, come and learnwith me at the Surf Society.
You are exactly who I created itfor.
If you want to catch up with memore regularly, subscribe to
this channel if you're listeningto the podcast episode there'll
(08:19):
be a link to the youtube videoin the show notes and then yeah
come back here in let's say twoweeks and try to do this every
two weeks i'll let you know whatwe're up to with the surf
society i'll let you know how mycore is doing after that core
challenge and we'll learn moresurf better and live happy
(08:39):
together so
