America's second "golden age" of craft beer started taking shape back in 2012. Breweries opened on every corner, beer nerds lined up for exclusive releases, and taprooms became the heart of local communities. It wasn't just about beer; it was about community.

However, as the market became more saturated and the growing consumer base became older and more health-conscious, beer releases became less and less popular.ย

And then COVID-19 happened and changed everything. Post-COVID, bottle releases still occur, but they aren't as popular nor as frequent, and most places let you pre-order online. Bottle releases became less about the community and more transactional.

According to the Wall Street Journal, 20% of adult drinkers are responsible for 90% of alcohol sales. Meanwhile, the Surgeon General of the United States issued a new warning about the effects of alcohol, and Gen Z seems to prefer alternatives like non-alcoholic beer, mocktails, hop water, and cannabis over craft beer.ย

There's no doubt about it: the way our society views craft beer has changed significantly over the last decade. How are craft breweries navigating these industry headwinds?

In this episode of the Craft Parenting Podcast, Joe and Caroline share their thoughts on the current state of the craft beer industry and how consumer habits are shifting. Plus, Joe shares his Dry January experience and they try Hop Water, a growing non-alcoholic alternative.

Supporting your favorite craft breweries doesn't have to stop just because you're not drinking. Many breweries offer delicious food and non-alcoholic options -- make sure you support them during Dry January!
