We're diving into the chaos of creativity and the struggle to maintain focus, folks! Today, we're taking a fun spin on the "Make Fun a Habit" series, where I'm all about helping you wrangle that wild inner critic and actually create stuff instead of just dreaming about it. We’ll chat about the importance of honing in on one or two creative pursuits—because let’s face it, trying to juggle all your passions at once can lead to a big ol’ mess (cue the classic Bic pen analogy!). I’ll share my own journey, from podcasting to poetry, and how I've learned to carve out time for what truly matters. Plus, we’ve got some juicy action items and tips to help you stay on track without losing your creative spark. So, grab your favorite drink, kick back, and let’s get the creative juices flowing!

Making Fun A Habit Series

30 days to add fun to your creative practice. I will be going through Mike Brennan's Make Fun A Habit workbook and help you make fun a habit. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike on my other podcast Find A Podcast About and talking about his podcast Creative Chats. This workbook leads you through steps to rekindle the fun in your life and get you into a space where you are your most creative. This is a 30-day book and I will tackle each day as if it were a week and provide insights on how to use his ideas in your creative practice. Each chapter is broken up with a short story, questions to ponder, action items, and tips.

Navigating the labyrinth of creativity can be a wild ride, and this episode is our trusty map! Timothy leads us through the latest chapter in the 'Make Fun a Habit' series, emphasizing the importance of focus in our creative endeavors. Drawing parallels to the classic Bic four-color pen, he highlights how trying to juggle all our interests at once can leave us creatively parched. Instead, he champions the idea of focusing on one or two projects at a time, allowing us to see them through to completion and truly relish in our creative successes.

Timothy’s reflections on his own artistic journey – from podcasting to poetry and painting – provide a relatable backdrop to the discussion. He shares his struggles with maintaining focus amidst a whirlwind of ideas and responsibilities. Let's face it, folks: life can throw a ton of distractions our way, but with a little discipline and some well-placed time management, we can carve out moments to thrive. Through engaging anecdotes and practical tips, Timothy encourages us to identify our current creative focus and how to balance multiple passions without feeling overwhelmed.

Takeaways:

  • In our creative journey, we often juggle multiple passions, but focusing on just one or two at a time helps us actually finish projects instead of leaving them as half-baked ideas.
  • The 'Make Fun a Habit' workbook encourages us to set daily goals that inject joy into our creative practices, reminding us to take breaks and enjoy the process.
  • Tim shared his current focus on podcasting and poetry, illustrating how setting specific creative goals can help streamline our efforts and boost productivity.
  • It's essential to celebrate even the tiniest achievements in our creative pursuits, as this fosters motivation and reminds us that progress, no matter how small, counts.

Create Art Podcast CommentaryHoney, I shrunk the focus. Part of
the Make Fun a Habit series.Hello, friend. This is Timothy Kim
O. Bryan, your head instigatorfor Create Art Podcast, where I bring
my over 30 years of experiencein the arts and education world to

(00:24):
help you tame your innercritic and create more than you consume.
So we're continuing on here in2025 with Make Fun a Habit series.
And you're going to askyourself, hey, Tim, what's this Make
Fun of Habit series? If thisis your first time here and what
that is, it's a workbook. Itruns you through a month, gives you

(00:46):
things for every day, and itswhole goal is to bring fun back into
your creative practice. Now,this workbook was created by Mike
Brennan, who runs the CreativeChats podcast. And I had pleasure
of reviewing that podcast onmy other podcast, Find a Podcast

(01:09):
About. And I got a chance toreview that podcast and meet up with
Mike. He's got a greatcommunity online and I thought, you
know what, I'm going todedicate an episode per day. So right
now we are at with thischapter, we're at chapter 23. And

(01:32):
there's 30 chapters in thebook. It's a great read. And let
me tell you how each chapteris set up. So Mike tells a story
about whatever topic he hasfor you for that day to focus on,
and then he'll give youquestions that relate to the topic,
he'll give you action items topossibly incorporate, and then he'll

(01:55):
give you tips. So that's whatI'm going to be doing in this episode
of Create Art Podcast. Ifyou've missed any of the other episodes
that I've done, you can alwaysgo back through my library, look
for the commentary ones andcheck out the show notes because
it has all the links in therefor the book and for my other podcast.

(02:20):
And it will let you know, hey, this one is about, you know, this
series, so that way you won'tget lost. I know it can be confusing,
so I'm trying to help you outwith that. And this episode is going
to be talking aboutmaintaining focus. That can be really
difficult for a lot ofcreatives because we have a lot of

(02:41):
different interests. I know Ihave a ton of different interests.
I'm a poet, I'm a theaterperson, I'm a short story writer,
I'd like to paint, I like todo sculpture, I like making music.
And obviously podcasting issomething I really love doing. So
I have a lot of differentinterests. And maybe you do as well,

(03:04):
and there's nothing wrong withthat. It's just sometimes we need
to focus in on one or two ofthem to make that happen for ourselves.
Now, Mike begins with a story, and he's talking about the Bic penny
and how they created a fourcolor pen. If you were of a certain

(03:25):
age like I am, you'll rememberwhen that came out. And any kid that
had that pen was, you know, really, they were coveted. And. But
the. The thing of it is thatyou could only do one color at a
time. You could not do allfour colors at a time, otherwise
the pen would clog up. Thesame thing happens in our lives.

(03:49):
If we're trying to do all ofour interests all at one time, we're
never going to get anythingdone. Now, that isn't to say that,
you know, we can't do all ofthe things. We just need to focus
on one or two projects maybeat a time, and then see them to completion

(04:09):
and then work on the otherprojects or be really good stewards
of our time. Because, you knowme, I have a full time job, a full
time day job. I'm a husband,I'm a father. You know, I have all
these other things pulling onme. So I need to be a very good steward
of my time, just like you do.And I'm sure you have other things

(04:30):
in your life that are going onthat, you know, would make me scratch
my head and pull my hair out, which there's not much left. So let's
get on to the assignments. Thefirst question that he asks us is
what is one thing you arefocusing on right now for your creativity?
So the main thing that I'mfocusing on right now is getting

(04:52):
guests into the show. And Ithink you've seen a uptick in guests
on the show and interviews onthe show to, you know, kind of tell
their stories about how theycreate what they're doing and the
lessons that they've learned. So that is the main thing that I
am focusing on. But looking atthe good old calendar on the wall

(05:15):
here, we have April coming up.I'm recording this in March, but
we have April coming up. Andfor me, that's National Poetry Writing
Month. So that in April I willbe focusing on that. Still doing
the podcast, but focusing onpoetry for a month later on this
year in November is NationalNovel Writing Month. I'll be focusing

(05:37):
on writing a novel inNovember. You know, 30 days to do
50,000 words. It is achallenge. I just recently had somebody
on Facebook comment thatthey're going to Try National Poetry
Writing Month and NationalPodcast Post Months. Podcast Post

(05:59):
Month is in November. And theysaid, am I biting off more than I
can chew? And I said, no. Youjust have to have really good time
management to be able to dothose things. And the same thing
with you and your practice.Just make sure that you have really
good time management thatyou're making sure that you put in
breaks for yourself. We can'tcreate 24. 7. We can't. We can try.

(06:25):
We can try to jam things inthere, and it's going to look like
we tried to jam things inthere. Our audience is smart. We
have to respect them. So makesure that you are setting time aside
for yourself. The secondquestion is, what are the multiple
pursuits or passions you have?Well, podcasting is one of them.

(06:46):
Music. I love adding music tomy writing, which is another passion
that I have. I do love topaint. I know that when I give paintings
to my wife and my kids, theyreally enjoy them. And you know,
my wife, she does a lot ofcross stitch and diamond paintings,
and she loves doing that andgiving those as gifts. So that's

(07:08):
her passion. So those are mymultiple pursuits that I have to.
I can't do them all at thesame time. You know, I can't record
a podcast and do music andwrite a poem and paint a picture
all at the same time. So Ihave to divvy it up. So some days
I do one, some days I do theother. And maybe that is a way for

(07:29):
you to do it. If you havemultiple passions, multiple projects,
you pick, you know, maybe aMonday to work on podcasting, Tuesday
to work on painting, Wednesdayto work on music, Thursday to work
on writing, Friday to work onyour body, and Saturday and Sunday
you give as rest days.Whatever it is for you, set it up

(07:53):
in a similar fashion. Itshould work out a okay for you. One
thing that I do is I do. Irecord these kinds of episodes on
Sunday morning wheneverybody's still asleep, and I'll
also do editing for the otherepisodes on Sunday morning. So, you
know, whenever you hear ainterview, you know, I may have interviewed

(08:16):
that person on like a Mondayor a Thursday, but I'm not going
to touch it until Sundaymorning when I know I'll have some
quiet and I'll have some timeto go ahead and give my full attention
to it. And the third questionis, do you find it easy or hard to
narrow your focus? Well, Ialways constantly have ideas going

(08:39):
through my head. So the ideaphase, I find it hard to focus. But
once I Get started on aproject. I find it easy to focus
just on that project. See,right now, everyone is asleep in
my house, so it's easy tofocus just on recording this episode.
If everyone was awake andrunning around, then there'd be a

(09:02):
lot of noise and I'd want toget involved, especially if, you
know, the kids are having ameltdown, you know, and help out
my family. But yeah, when I'min a project, I'm laser focused on
that project. So for me, thatpart is easy. It's the ideation that
I have that I struggle with.Okay, and we're going to move on

(09:26):
to action items. He has twoaction items here for us. The first
one is an activity. Choose onecreative pursuit that you're interested
in and set a goal foryourself. So with podcasting, what
is my goal? Well, I set a goalfor myself this year to start up
my own podcast consultingbusiness. And I did it. You know,

(09:49):
I set that goal last year. Isaid I want, by 2025, I want to have
that business up and running. And here it is now for, you know,
2026. What do I want to havedone by the end of the year? That's
a good question. I do want todo more local outreach in my area

(10:09):
here in Fredericksburg, and Ido want to participate in a couple
of festivals that arehappening, mainly the Independent
festival, and that's happeningin October of this year. I want to
make sure that I, you know, knock out the National Poetry Writing
Month and the National NovelWriting Month. Those are my two big

(10:32):
goals. And I have those goalsfor each and every year. Do I reach
them every year? No, I've hadsome years where I've fallen flat
on my face. But those are twobig goals that I do, you know, put
myself to. And sometimesyou've got to take away goals. One
of the things that I took awaywas National Podcast Post Month.

(10:54):
I just could not do it becauseagain, I have a family that I need
to take care of. I have a fulltime job. And, you know, I was really
stressing out over that, so Itook that off of my plate. But I
left the National NovelWriting Month on there because I
really enjoy writing. The nextaction item is actually an action,

(11:18):
and that's set aside time eachday to work on your creative pursuit.
And I spend a lot of timeplanning in my head. And maybe I
need to do more planning onpaper or digitally, but, you know,
I do set time every Sunday to,you know, record episodes or to edit

(11:38):
episodes. And, you know, Iused to When I was not commuting
to work, I used to do a thingwhere I would draw every day. And
I bought a couple of booksthat gave me, you know, different
shapes and different ideas onwhat to draw every day. And I would
really like to get back intothat because it's very relaxing,

(11:59):
very restful. So, again, I ama work in progress, just like you
are. That is something thatI'll need to get back into. All right,
moving on to his tips for ushere. He has six tips. The first
one is think about what youare most passionate about. And what
I'm most passionate about iscreating art in all of its forms.

(12:22):
So that's not a good focuswith that. So maybe it's okay. I'm
good in these areas. I want toget better in these areas. That's,
you know, for me, that wouldbe number tip, number one. Tip number
two is, what are you good at?I think I'm good at podcasting. I

(12:43):
mean, you're sitting herelistening to this podcast, so I've
captured your attention. So Ithink I'm good with that. I really
enjoy my music that I create, and I've had people enjoy it and
comment on it, writing. I. Iknow I'm good at poetry and performance.
Poetry, because every Friday, you know, I stand up on the stage

(13:05):
and people applaud that. So Ithink I'm pretty good at that. Tip
number three is, what do youwant to achieve with your creative
work? And basically what Iwould like to achieve, and this is
going to sound very leftbrain, but I would like to, when
I retire, have my creativework, be the income that supports
me and my family. Number four, once you have considered these factors,

(13:31):
choose one or two creativepursuits to focus on. Well, I think
podcasting is the best one forme because it's reliant on me and
my skills. So that's the mainone I'm going to choose. And then
writing as well is another onethat I think I can add things to

(13:52):
it, like music and, you know, like painting. But I think podcasting
and writing are my two majorcreative pursuits that I'm going
to be focusing on. Tip numberfive is don't be afraid to experiment
or try new things. He mustknow me pretty well because I like

(14:13):
to experiment with things. Ilike to try new things. I like trying
AI, different things with AI.I like trying different things with
podcasting. If you've, youknow, subscribed to my newsletter,
you know, I'm experimentingwith things over there, you know,
trying out newsletters, tryingout New ways to reach out to folks.

(14:33):
So for me, number five is, youknow, is a duh. And then number six,
celebrate your success, nomatter how small. And that's really
important for all of us.That's why in each episode, I tell
you, I tell you to, you know, tame that inner critic and create
more than you consume and makesome art for somebody you love yourself,

(14:56):
no matter how big or small itis, you're creating something, and
I applaud that, and I thinkthat's a wonderful thing. So keep
on doing that for yourself.I'm doing it for me. I'm not going
to stop. No matter what, I'mnot going to stop creating things.
And I think a lot of times weforget to give. Give ourselves a

(15:17):
nice pat on the back for thethings that we do. So this is my
virtual pat on the back to youfor what you do, and it's a virtual.
Well, it's a real pat on theback for me for everything that I
do, and we should feel goodabout it. All right, well, that is
the episode here for youtoday. I hope you got something out
of it. And I just wanted toremind you that I have started up

if nothing else, check out thedeep dive. It's a tool that I'm experimenting

(17:51):

new things. Let me know whatyou think about that. Alright, it's
time for me to get on with myday. I know you need to get on with
your day, so go out there andtame that inner critic. Create more
than you consume. Try justfocusing on one or two things until

(18:14):
completion. And go out there, make some art for somebody you love.
