Julie and Dom highlight SCORE as one of the most valuable and underused resources for entrepreneurs in the United States. SCORE offers free mentorship from experienced business professionals who have already navigated the challenges of entrepreneurship.
Dom shares a lesson he learned through SCORE that stayed with him. Most business partnerships fail, and hearing that early can help entrepreneurs make smarter, more intentional decisions.
They also discuss the value of chambers of commerce, Rotary clubs, Kiwanis, and local community organizations. These groups are often looking for speakers, volunteers, and leaders, making them excellent places to build visibility and credibility.
NETWORKING TIPS THAT ACTUALLY WORK
Julie is clear about one thing. Do not lead with a pitch. Real networking starts with curiosity and connection, not selling. Asking someone about themselves, making eye contact, and listening creates trust far more effectively than a rehearsed elevator pitch.
Dom agrees with being human first while also emphasizing that entrepreneurs should know how to clearly explain what they do when asked. Many structured networking environments require short introductions, so preparation still matters.
The balance is knowing your brand without leading with it.
HOW TO START CONVERSATIONS NATURALLY
Julie explains that one of the easiest ways to approach someone at a networking event is to comment on something happening in the moment. This could be the speaker, the venue, the food, or the shared experience of being there.
