Focus on foods that are . In this document, we’ve broken down a recommended timeline for how and when to reintroduce certain foods and food groups into your diet after a total gastrectomy. For at least the first 4 to 6 weeks after your surgery, you will be able to eat and drink only soft foods. It is common to quickly feel full after this surgery. You may also have dumping . This diet is to be used by patients to prevent/control dumping syndrome, which occurs in some patients after a total or partial gastrectomy. Dumping syndrome is characterized y the rapid movement of foods through the GI tract with resulting abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting. Follow this diet for about 3 weeks after surgery and slowly add new foods as tolerated. Eat six small meals per day or every hours to avoid overfilling the stomach. Sit upright while eating. Eat slowly, take small bites of food and chew your food well. Limit fluid at meals and drink slowly.
