Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey all my fellow
crime connoisseurs, I'm your

Before we jump in, I just wantto go over a few happenings in
the true crime world right now.
On February 14th, at the KansasCity Chief's Victory Parade,
gunshots rang out, wounding 22people, ages ranging from 6 to
(00:22):
47.
It is said that at least halfof these victims were under the
age of 16.
Local radio DJ for KKFI 90.1 FM, 44-year-old Lisa Lopez Galvin
was sadly killed.
Reports initially stated it wastwo juveniles, but the latest
(00:44):
reports named two men, lindellMays and Dominic Miller, who
have been arrested and chargedwith second-degree murder, two
counts of armed criminal actionand unlawful use of a weapon.
Another true crime happening isthe case of Ruby.
Frank Ruby and her businesspartner, jody Hildebrandt
(01:07):
pleaded guilty to child abuse onFebruary 20th and were both
sentenced to four to 30 years.
They have 30 days to appealtheir sentencing.
A spokesperson for Ruby hassaid that she will not be
appealing her sentence At thistime.
It's unknown if Jody will beappealing hers as well.
(01:28):
Finally, on February 22, a NewHampshire jury found Adam
Montgomery guilty ofsecond-degree murder in the
death of his five-year-olddaughter, harmony.
Adam's sentencing date is setfor the morning of Thursday, may
9th 2024.
He's facing 35 years to life inprison.
(01:51):
I know that's a lot ofinformation before we get
started, but these were justsuch important events that I
felt we needed to touch on firstNow.
In our last episode we coveredthe supposed ailments that Dee
Dee claimed Gypsy had, theprocedures she had gone through
and Gypsy's attempt to run awayfrom Dee Dee and her control.
(02:14):
Unfortunately for Gypsy, deeDee found her and convinced her
to return home with her.
Little did Gypsy know theadditional horrors that awaited
her.
Gypsy realized that she neededto get away from Dee Dee for
good, but how?
Before we kick off, I want togive a trigger warning.
(02:35):
Today's episode will containtopics of abuse and sexual
assault.
So, with that being said, let'spick up right where we left off
.
(03:22):
Dee Dee had bought a gun andGypsy was scared.
She felt trapped and helpless.
Dee Dee was such a manipulator.
She had people believing thatGypsy was mentally impaired and
she would do anything to keep upthe facade.
Gypsy planned to try and runaway again.
She packed her bag and hid it,waiting for the right time.
(03:44):
But Dee Dee was suspicious andfound the bag, and she
confronted Gypsy about it.
Gypsy saw the gun on the table, threatened Dee Dee with it and
pulled the trigger as many timesas she could.
A couple of bullets hit Dee Deeand a couple hit the wall, but
as it turns out the gun wasactually a BB gun.
(04:06):
Dee Dee went to get medicalcare and lied about what
happened.
She said a man robbed her, taking her wallet and then
shooting her 10 times with a BBgun.
Dee Dee didn't want to riskshining a light on things with
Gypsy and law enforcementfiguring out how bad things were
with the two of them.
(04:28):
After this, gypsy was able toget back online again and
created her own little fantasyland.
Her friend told her to join afree Christian dating site, so
she signed up On the site.
She met a man named NicholasGoodejohn.
They hid it off and thingsquickly moved along with them.
(04:48):
Nick was from Big Bend,wisconsin.
The two talked about a low-bingnaming children they would have
together and had sexualexchanges online.
An ex-girlfriend of Nick'sreached out to Gypsy and warned
her that Nick was violent andabusive, but Gypsy didn't
believe her.
(05:09):
She thought this was just ajaded ex-girlfriend.
Everything with Gypsy at Nickwas online.
They created their own fantasyworld, just the two of them.
Gypsy ended up confiding in Nickabout the abuse, the lies and
everything she dealt with deety.
In one message, gypsy wrotequote I need to tell you
(05:33):
something.
I'm no model.
I have a medical condition so Ican't walk.
I have a chair I use.
Is that an issue?
End quote.
Nick responded quote why wouldthat be a problem?
You are an angel in my eyes.
It will never make anydifference in how I see you from
(05:56):
the inside out.
End quote.
After three months, nick startedto change.
Each night before bed he madeGypsy say I love and adore you,
my king charming.
Good night.
If she didn't, he would getverbally abusive.
A month later, nick told her hehad a BDSM fetish.
(06:18):
He taught Gypsy how to roleplaycharacters with names and
personas.
She would dress up in costumesand share photos of herself with
him using her secret socialmedia accounts.
Their relationship was keptsecret for about two and a half
years before Gypsy told herfriend about it.
(06:39):
Gypsy told Aliyah Woodmancyabout her relationship with Nick
in 2014.
Aliyah found the relationshipalarming due to the sexual
nature and that she believedGypsy was still a minor.
Aliyah tried talking Gypsy outof continuing contact with Nick,
but Gypsy was smitten with him.
(06:59):
Gypsy admitted she wanted to bemore like girls her age and
date but knew Didi would have toapprove first.
The two had an onlinerelationship for three years.
They exchanged several messages, trying to figure out ways to
see each other.
They planned to meet at themovies in March of 2015.
(07:23):
They arranged for Nick to meetDidi in Springfield to see the
new Cinderella movie.
They hoped that Didi mightallow them to date if she
thought that they met for thefirst time in person.
Nick approached them at thetheater and started randomly
talking to Gypsy and Didi, buthe came off really weird about
(07:45):
it and began by talking aboutthe weather.
Didi found this very odd.
Like who is this older guytalking to a teenage girl and
going to see Cinderella byhimself?
Remember, at this time Didi isstill trying to play it off that
Gypsy is a minor.
(08:06):
During the movie, nick and Gypsysnuck out of the movie and had
sex in a handicapped stall whereshe lost her virginity.
Gypsy was disappointed and feltshameful and disgusting about
it.
According to Gypsy, didi gotjealous of her giving Nick so
much attention.
(08:26):
She ordered Gypsy to stay awayfrom him.
They fought for weeks over this.
Gypsy said that Didi called hernames like whore and slut.
Didi called Gypsy a devil spawnand said that she should have
aborted her when she had thechance.
After this, gypsy and Nick beganto plan Gypsy's escape from
(08:50):
Didi once and for all.
Gypsy felt that it was eitherher or Didi.
Didi had power of attorneypapers declaring Gypsy was
mentally incompetent so if sheran away again, the cops would
bring her home because of thepower of attorney.
After thinking of everypossible way to try and escape
(09:14):
Didi, every option they couldthink of resulted in Didi
finding her and bringing herback home.
It was after this that Gypsycame up with the idea of having
Didi killed.
That is when the true, darkside of Nick Gotajan appeared.
He told Gypsy his alter ego wasa 500 year old vampire named
(09:40):
Victor who loved to kill.
Before we go on, let's learn alittle more about Nick.
Nick was born in Big Bend,Wisconsin, on May 20th 1989.
His father's name is BobbyGotajan and his mother's name is
Stephanie.
They divorced when Nick wasaround three or four years old.
(10:03):
Nick lived with his mom.
After this, during grade school, nick was diagnosed with
Asperger's syndrome, a form ofautism.
Nick grew up a bit of a loner.
In an oxygen interview.
His dad, bobby said, quote itwas hard for him to make friends
(10:24):
.
He was always by himself, pretty much grew up by himself.
He had friends, not many, oneor two, but mainly family were
his friends.
End quote Nick's mom, stephanie, remarried a man named Charles
Goldimer in 2008.
Sadly, nick had a troublingpast.
(10:47):
On March 11, 2013, at the age of23, nick arrived at a Waukesha
McDonald's at 10.30 am andstayed there with his laptop
until police were called at 7.18pm.
The shift manager contacted thepolice after a customer
(11:08):
complained and the shift managerwalked past to find Nick
masturbating to pornography.
According to reports, he toldpolice he had his hands down his
pants because he was scratchinghimself.
However, the Waukesha policeofficer, who were called to the
McDonald's, didn't buy this.
(11:28):
People at McDonald's toldpolice that he was watching
pornography on his laptop whilefondling himself.
According to the complaint, officers arrested Nick at the
restaurant and found a largefolding knife in his pocket.
Nick was charged with carryinga concealed weapon and
(11:50):
disorderly conduct in WaukeshaCounty Circuit Court.
If convicted, he faced up to ayear in jail and $11,000 in
fines.
Prosecutors eventuallydismissed the carrying a
concealed weapon charge.
Nick was ordered to pay a finein this case and surrendered the
(12:11):
weapon to the Waukesha PoliceDepartment.
Before we return to 2015, I wantto give a trigger warning.
We are going to be going overwhat happens to Dee Dee and the
topic of rape will be discussed.
This may be triggering for somelisteners.
Gypsy had asked Nick to murderDee Dee.
(12:35):
Nick suggested poison or arson.
Gypsy suggested a gun, but Nicksaid it would be too loud.
After going back and forth onideas, the pair eventually
landed on using a knife.
Nick wanted to rape Dee Dee,murder her and dump her body at
a farm and leave her for thepigs.
Over time, the two planned howthey would go about murdering
(12:59):
Dee Dee.
Gypsy recorded a video of awalkthrough of the house to show
Nick.
In the video, gypsy points tothe side of the bed that Dee Dee
laid on and you can see Gypsy'shand making a stabbing motion.
During this time, nick had sentGypsy a series of unsettling
(13:21):
text messages that said quotehoney, you forget.
I am ruthless and my hatred ofher will force her to die.
It's my evil side doing it.
He won't mess up because heenjoys killing me.
He won't mess up because heenjoys killing.
End quote.
Gypsy stole money from Dee DeeSafe and mailed it to Nick in a
(13:46):
greeting card to get a busticket to Springfield.
On June 9th 2015, gypsy woke upand messaged Nick.
He told Gypsy he was on his way.
Nick had told Gypsy to tell hermom she loved her for the last
time About five hours before themurder happened.
(14:10):
Gypsy said she and Dee Dee hada moment.
They watched a movie.
Gypsy hugged her mom and toldher that she loved her.
According to Gypsy, didi askedwhat was that for?
I'm not dead yet.
Gypsy went to the bedroom andcried.
Part of her didn't want to gothrough with it.
(14:32):
She hugged Didi's pillow andsaid that it smelled like her
mom.
Two hours later, nick messagedGypsy saying he had arrived.
He checked into a motel andwaited for a confirmation text
from Gypsy.
She informed him that Didi wasasleep.
Nick took a cab to the 2100block of North Volunteer Way.
(14:58):
When Nick arrived at the house, gypsy unlocked the door and
gave Nick a knife she had stolenfrom a local Walmart.
He told Gypsy to quote get inthe bathroom now, end quote.
So she did exactly that.
She went into the bathroom, saton the floor and covered her
(15:19):
ears.
Gypsy could hear Didi screamingand banging.
The screaming wasn't like thatof a horror movie, but more of a
startle type scream.
Didi asked who was in thebedroom and then Nick attacked
her.
She started screaming again.
It stopped for a moment soGypsy uncovered her ears and
(15:43):
then she heard Didi call outquote Gypsy, help me, end.
Quote.
She called out for Gypsy threeor four more times.
Gypsy wanted to help, but shedidn't.
She stayed in the bathroomfrozen.
She heard the screaming startagain and then one more sharp
(16:04):
final scream, then silence.
During the process of themurder, nick cut his finger.
He had Gypsy clean up thedroplets of blood throughout the
house.
According to Gypsy, she was in adisassociated state and the
following events are whathappened.
(16:25):
According to her and statementsthat she has given over the
years Trigger warning topic ofrape is going to be covered.
She said that Nick commandedher to get naked and that since
Gypsy would not let Nick rapeDidi, she said she had to let
(16:46):
him rape her.
When Gypsy yelled stop, hedidn't.
She called out for Didi eventhough Didi was already dead.
According to Gypsy, she blackedout when Nick choked her.
When she came to, he made hercall a cab.
Gypsy was high and in shock overwhat had all unfolded over
(17:09):
those last several hours.
She didn't believe any of itwas real and actually happened.
Nick had a round trip busticket and when they went to the
bus station to get a ticket forGypsy, there weren't any seats
available for her.
Seating was available on thenext trip from Springfield,
(17:30):
missouri to Wisconsin in twodays, so Nick exchanged his
round trip ticket for a seat onthat one and they purchased a
ticket for Gypsy.
After this, the couple wentback to the motel where they had
sex and videotaped themselves.
After talking about it Beforethey left for the bus trip to
(17:54):
Wisconsin, they mailed the knifeNick used to murder Didi to his
home.
When they finally arrived atNick's home in Big Bend, they
told his mom that Didi kickedGypsy out and that she would be
safe there with them.
They went into his room andGypsy noticed it looked like
that of a 15-year-old boy, not a26-year-old.
(18:17):
He had a wrestling comforter onhis bed.
It was then that Gypsy realizedNick wasn't as independent as
she had thought he was.
According to Gypsy, nickcontrolled what she would wear,
eat, drink and watch, just likeDidi had done.
She traded one controllingnightmare for another.
(18:40):
The remorse and guilt startedto surface and she wanted Didi
to be found.
So on June 14, 2015, she wentto the Facebook account.
She and Didi shared DejitBlanchard and decided to post
what Nick said when he got tothe house.
(19:01):
Quote that bitch is dead.
End quote.
People were confused by thispost.
One person questioned Did youget hacked?
Another posted what's going on?
The comments continued to floodthe post, with many people
worried about what was postedand no other communication from
(19:24):
the account after that.
Some went back and forth aboutcalling the police, while others
decided to go to the residence.
Eventually the police werecalled and the investigation
began.
When police entered the home, they were met with a grueling
scene On the bed in the bedroomthey found Didi's lifeless body.
(19:49):
She was stabbed 17 times andthe bed was covered in blood.
Police continued to search thehouse for Gypsy.
They found her wheelchair inthe bathroom, but no sign of her
.
They thought maybe someone hadkidnapped Gypsy and left the
wheelchair behind and carriedGypsy away from the home.
(20:11):
Gypsy's friend Aliyah toldpolice about Gypsy's secret
relationship with Nick and thealarming things that Gypsy had
confided in her.
It wasn't long beforeinvestigators tracked down the
IP address that made the post tothe Facebook account.
Thanks to the help from the FBI, they determined that the IP
(20:33):
address came from the Gotajanresidents in Big Bend, wisconsin
.
The next day, on June 15, policefrom the Waukesha County were
dispatched to the Gotajan familyhome.
Over the PA speakers, officerscalled out for Nick and Gypsy to
come out of the house withtheir hands up.
(20:55):
There was a bit of a standofffor a little while before they
surrendered.
Gypsy were called, coming outscared and shaking, and when she
opened the door the red lasersfrom the guns were aimed at her.
When law enforcement officialsrealized that the young woman
was Gypsy, they were a bitconfused because they were
(21:17):
informed that she would need awheelchair because of being
paralyzed.
Gypsy and Nick were taken to thepolice station and placed in
separate rooms.
Nick was taken into aninterrogation room and Gypsy was
taken into a more comfortableroom with a couch.
I watched the entire two plushours of Nick's interrogation
(21:41):
with Detective Angela Mahouly.
Shout out to 8 minute crimesinvestigations for having the
full police interrogations ofNick and Gypsy.
I'll link them in the shownotes for you guys to view if
you haven't seen either of them.
Nick's is about 2 hours and 20minutes and Gypsy's is about an
(22:01):
hour and 35 ish minutes and Iwatched both of them in full.
When it comes to Nick'sinterrogation video, to say that
it was cringe worthy is anunderstatement, because,
remember, nick was diagnosedwith autism spectrum disorder
(22:22):
while he was in grade school.
During the interrogation, nickwas alone in the room with
Detective Angela Mahouly, withno parent or guardian, no legal
representation.
Nick signed the paper goingover his Miranda rights
initially, next to each one thathe heard and understood, but in
(22:44):
the video you can see that helooks confused.
In the beginning Nick starts totell the story that he and Gypsy
came up with.
When Detective Mahoulyconfronts him, saying she knows
he is lying and that Gypsy hastold them everything, he starts
to tell the truth.
As he is talking with DetectiveMahouly, he's very calm and
(23:07):
reserved.
Multiple times he expressesguilt, but he also has playful
laughs while saying it, as if hewas just caught in a lie over
something small, not murder.
At one point, detective Mahoulyasks him if there is anything
else that he wants to say thatthey still need to discuss.
(23:28):
Maybe he needs to take a momentand think about it.
She tells Nick she will step outof the room and give him some
time to think, she steps out andyou can see Nick thinking, and
then he starts talking tohimself.
He mutters quote, oh, I gottatell her that.
End quote.
(23:49):
Then he starts saying somethingelse that's hard to make out
and seems to be talking tohimself, looking from one side
of him to the other, as if he'shaving a conversation with
someone who isn't there.
Then he says quote, I am so outof it.
End quote.
He puts his hands on his headand he starts rubbing it,
(24:12):
followed by quote, but I'm soworried about our gypsy, though.
End quote.
Nick is silent for a minute, then looks to his left as if
he's talking with someone havinga conversation, but remember,
he's alone.
It's hard to decipher what he'ssaying in some parts, but
(24:33):
here's a clip of what I'mreferencing I'm going to ask her
a question that maybe she canexplain to me in answer to.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
I'm going to ask her
a question that maybe she can
explain to me in answer to.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
He sits silent for a
little while before saying quote
I don't know if I'll be able tosee her, I really don't know.
About 15 seconds later,Detective Maholi came back into
the room.
During this time, Nickcontinues to speak with
Detective Maholi and confessmore.
(25:57):
She asked him about the lie andother things that I found
interesting about her tactics.
I'm going to play a portion ofthis interaction.
It's about six and a halfminutes long, but I felt it was
important for you guys to hearit from them and their demeanors
and tones.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
What was the lie
story you guys came up with?
I'm always interested in that, because they never work.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
But what was your
plan?
What we were going to say wasthat first I got into the screen
field by the bus, came to thehotel and then, in her
reflection, he told her she wasout on the streets, and while
(26:47):
that was going on, she asked mefor her.
I asked her.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
See how it is.
When you start telling lies, itgets confusing, doesn't it?
The whole I'm getting confusedbecause I'm so tired.
She was supposed to make itseem as if she asked for my room
number, so this way she goesstraight to my room and then,
after that, emon allowed the lie.
Did you guys send fake textsback and forth to try to help
build up the story?
That's the thing.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
That's the reason why
I said that he was lying, and
that's part of the reason why Iwasn't sure if she was going to
tell you the lie or not, becauseI was ready to tell you the lie
, but I didn't know what she did.
I'm trying to follow along withthe full thing, whether it's
the truth or not the truth.
I want to make sure that I getthe full story straight with
(27:40):
what she says too.
Okay, do you think you've donethat so far?
I only hope I did, because I'vetold only enough about the
truth.
Okay, if you could go back andchange something, what would you
do?
I would have.
The thing is, this is somethingI mean.
(28:01):
You see, I've talked about thisa hundred times since me.
I've lived together with thesethings and she's been able to be
with me.
I kept on going back and I kepton asking her.
This is the question.
I kept on asking her before Iasked her.
I was the one who actuallyasked her before we even did
(28:21):
this killing that happened.
I was the one who actuallyasked her.
Are you sure you want me to dothis?
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Okay, and she said
yes, and actually, she said yes,
that's the rest of the storyalready now.
Okay, but the person I kept onasking her besides that, I asked
her are you willing to riskeverything to have everything
you ever want?
Okay, and that's part of thereason why she risked her old
(28:54):
life to have one with me.
Okay, I see what you're saying.
Yeah, so you didn't reallyanswer my question.
If you could go back and changeany one thing about what has
happened, what would you change?
Uh-huh, this happened, yeah, ohgosh, would you change anything
?
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Well, the thing is, I
would rather not kill the DD.
The truth.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
Because that's the
hardest and the main thing that
you're going to do at the moment.
So the entire thing, okay.
Okay, sometimes, what I like todo is when people are
cooperative and they tell thetruth and they tell their story,
I like to offer them theopportunity to write an apology
letter, and you can write thatletter to anyone that you want.
(29:44):
That's most important.
Whether you write it to yourmom, or you want to write it to
DD's family, or you want towrite it to Gypsy, or you want
to write it to anyone, then Ilike to give people that
opportunity.
Is that an opportunity youwould like to take advantage of?
Yeah, I would do it.
Okay, would you like to do thatright now?
Um, I don't know what to say.
Do you want some time to sit inhere and think about it?
(30:05):
Because I got to get a camera, because I got to take some
pictures of you, I can leave youalone to do that if you'd like
to do that.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
Um, oh jeez, Do you
think that's too hard to do?
You don't have to do it.
You don't have to do it.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
It's just something
that I allow you to do if you
wish to do.
I mean, I do feel like theguilt where I feel like I really
do feel like doing it.
Okay, how about this?
How about we do this?
If you don't want to express iton a piece of paper, tell me
now, if you had to apologize tosomeone for what has happened,
who would you apologize to?
Speaker 2 (30:41):
The thing is, I do
feel bad for Gypsy's family.
I really do feel bad for them.
I feel bad for Gypsy.
I feel bad for all Gypsy'sfriends.
I hate it.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
There's so many
people that, so you would
apologize to all of them people.
I'll try to go and apologize asmuch as I could.
Okay, all right.
All right, I'm going to go geta camera, I'm going to take some
pictures of you and then we cansee what's going to happen from
there.
Okay, oh jeez, I'm nervous.
Okay, I know you're nervous,but, um, you've done what's
(31:13):
right.
Are you hungry?
Do you want to eat this?
Okay, let me get a camera andI'll take some pictures of you.
Okay, okay, and I didn't have arequest for one of the
detectives, which was to go andhold Gypsy one time after this.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Call Gypsy one time
after this.
Okay, I'll see you remember whothat was that you talked to.
About that.
There was one, I think,detective.
His number is Detective Brad,if anybody called him.
So, detective Brad, I don'tknow.
There was also no one.
I asked a lot of them.
I asked Detective Brad,detective Todd, okay, I can't
(31:51):
remember the third one.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Let me go see if
that's something that they want
to do.
Okay, that's pretty much up tothem.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
I don't care one way
or the other.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
If they want to do
that, I'm okay with that.
So let me go ask, okay.
Okay, but first, before thatcould even happen, I have to
take pictures of you.
Okay, um, I have a littlequestion, yeah, so I'm going to
know why.
I think you have to takepictures.
Just to make it clear aboutthat.
Okay, the reason I want to takepictures is because I see these
injuries on you.
Remember, you told me that youcut yourself whenever you were
(32:18):
stabbing Dee?
Yeah, so I want to take apicture of that, okay, and then
you said that you had an injury, right?
Speaker 2 (32:24):
here.
No, that got re-entered, so Ijust want to take pictures of
you for that, okay.
Do you have injuries anywhereelse?
Um, not so hard.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Do you have any marks
that Gypsy did to you or
anything that she did to you?
Um, and you want me tophotograph, or no?
Okay, are you sure you're nothurt anywhere, or anything?
Speaker 2 (32:43):
I was on the road and
I'm already down at your home.
Okay, all right, I'll be rightback.
Speaker 1 (32:52):
After this, detective
Maholi steps out and Detective
Hancock comes in to photographNick's injuries.
When Detective Hancock is done, detective Maholi returns to the
room and asks Nick whatFacebook accounts he and Gypsy
use to talk to each other.
He explains that they had a fewdifferent ones and deleted
(33:14):
several before they werearrested.
He gives her the names he canremember and tells her about a
joint account they shared.
Detective Maholi leaves again.
Nick starts saying to himselfquote I think I'm screwed.
I think I'm screwed.
I did it for her and only forher, actually for us.
(33:36):
So yeah, it was for us.
I wouldn't have did it if itwasn't for us.
Said it was the only way to betogether.
End quote.
Nick continues to talk tohimself, expressing his guilt
and explaining why he did it.
He says quote I got a questionfor that lady.
(33:59):
Does Gypsy even want to see me?
Where is that lady?
She said she was going to beright back, end quote.
All of a sudden, nick starts tobreak down and things get
interesting.
Take a listen.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Detectives.
The thing is I already feelguilty.
There's no reason to punish mefor something I'm already guilty
of For some sense, but it'ssimilar to something they
already know they're guilty of.
Maybe they know them and theylet me ask.
And they don't give it again.
They don't need to sentence meinto anything.
(35:08):
It's a one-time thing.
I'll never kill a gun.
If we can wait 26 years, if wecan kill one person, I hope
that's the only person I everhave to kill.
Is it never?
Ever?
I'm sorry.
Can you stand up for me please?
Sure, go ahead and blanketthere, stand here and face the
(35:32):
wall for me.
Thanks for this.
While you're back, not coming, what's going on there?
We're going to be moving up toa different place.
We're just going to hang outfor a little bit, okay, okay,
that's the way in our direction, sir.
Well, I don't know, but wedon't have a facility or
appropriate place for you tosleep down here, so we're just
(35:54):
going to be taking you up to alocation where you're going to
be able to relax.
Don't turn around for me, okay, okay, okay, I'm sorry.
Can you step right up for meplease?
Yes, anything on you at all?
Nope, just need to perform apat down on our search, okay.
Okay, I was hoping for a patinto CGT one more time.
(36:20):
Yeah, I don't think that'sgoing to happen tonight.
Okay, tonight I was.
The thing is, sir, is that Iknow that this is going to be a
long wait for me.
Okay, that's the reason why Iwas hoping I would at least get
to see her.
There's one more time beforethat long wait.
(36:40):
I don't have it in my power tomake that happen for you.
So, unfortunately, right now, just given the what's all going
on, okay, because it's still allin the works, we don't want you
guys to talk.
Okay, maybe down the road thatmight happen, but not right now.
Okay, oh, the other detectivethat's just supposed to come
(37:03):
bumping in outside, she's notcoming back anymore.
Oh, she'll talk to you in themorning.
In the morning, oh, she'll talk.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
Yep, and you step out
here for me, okay.
Okay, we're driving, we'redriving, we're driving.
I'll go.
During this conversation withhimself, he's again looking to
the side of him as if he'stalking with someone, even
though he's alone.
To speak to Nick's mentalcapacity, again he makes the
(37:29):
comment that there's no reasonto punish him anymore when he
knows he's guilty and feelsguilty, and how he's not going
to kill him again.
It took him 26 years to evenkill for the first time.
At the end of the recording, nick is moved out of the
interrogation room and to aplace where they can keep him
(37:50):
for the night.
At the same time Nick isinterrogated, gypsy is also
being questioned by the police.
Detective Hancock, who took thephotos of Nick, sits with Gypsy
and speaks with her.
Gypsy is placed in a differentroom than Nick and it's not set
up like your averageinterrogation room.
The room Gypsy is in has acouch, an end table with a lamp
(38:15):
on it and a chair for thedetective to sit.
At this point Gypsy thinkstheir plan is still in place.
Detective Hancock asks her howshe is and says he's there to
get some information from her.
He asks her for the correctspelling of her name, she gives
the spelling and when she givesher date of birth she says it's
(38:36):
1995.
She tells Detective Hancockthat she and Dee Dee were
Hurricane Katrina survivors andthat her birth certificate was
lost during the hurricane andwhen they redid the paperwork
for it they messed up and put1991.
But her birth year is actually1995.
(38:57):
He asks Gypsy how old she wouldbe and she says quote, um, I
would say she's 19.
And she says quote, um, I wouldreally be 19, but I'm here and
my Medicaid, my medicalinsurance, has 23.
End quote.
He then asks her if she knowsher social security number and
(39:23):
she says she doesn't, but thatshe brought her card with her,
but it's at her boyfriend'shouse, meaning Nick.
When Detective Hancock asks herif she has any family in
Louisiana, she says she does, but they are not on good
speaking terms.
He then asks if she has anyrelatives who live in Missouri
(39:46):
and Gypsy says quote, I have mymom who lives in Missouri.
End quote.
At just under three and a halfminutes in Detective Hancock
says that he needs to talk toher about some things and she
says in a relieved way quote, okay, I'm thankful because I
(40:07):
have no idea why I'm here.
Nobody will tell me anything.
End quote.
He then explains to Gypsy thathe is going to go over her
Miranda rights and to stop himif she does not understand
something that he's going over, and assures her that it is not
rude to stop or interrupt him ifshe doesn't understand
(40:29):
something.
Detective Hancock asked Gypsyabout her schooling, education,
if she can read and write, andabout her reading comprehension.
Just as Detective Mholey didwith Nick, he reads Gypsy her
rights and asks her if sheunderstands what he has just
(40:49):
read, and she says yes.
He asks Gypsy if she has a cellphone, and she says no.
He asks if she has a home phone, and she says yes, my mom's.
He asks her for the number andshe gives it to him.
He then asks her if she has acomputer or if she plays any
(41:11):
games on the computer, and sheanswered him like she was
confused and says quote.
Um, I don't really have acomputer, and quote.
He then asks if she ever had acell phone that she would play
around on, and Gypsy says noagain.
He asks about a laptop or aKindle fire or anything of that
(41:34):
sort, and she said no, that DeeDee wouldn't allow her, saying
it was unsafe.
When he asked why Dee Dee feltit was unsafe, gypsy replied
quote my mom tended to beoverprotective.
End quote.
Did you guys catch that too?
She used the past tense and herresponse.
(41:56):
It was after this thatDetective Hancock said he'd tell
her what they needed to talkabout and warned her that if she
was involved in it, she neededto tell him.
Now, here, take a listen topart of Detective Hancock's
interview with Gypsy.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
You know, sometimes
you get dill at hand and I think
sometimes that's what'shappening with you, okay, and I
want you to understand that youneed to be honest with me and if
you're involved in anything,it's not about ready to tell you
, and you need to tell me.
Okay, your mom's dead, okay.
Now, what I want to ask you isyour mom's passed away?
(42:37):
Okay, she's deceased, alright.
Now what I want to ask you didyou have involvement in this?
Okay, Hang on, hang on, hang on.
Listen to me for a second.
Okay, I want you to understandsomething.
Okay, you remember this is theball that we talked about.
You remember the pencil that wetalked about.
(42:58):
I want to almost demonstratesomething with a pencil here.
Okay, Look at me.
Look at me for just a second.
Okay, Sometimes people aregoing along.
You know how you got a pencil.
You get the lead here and youget the eraser right here, right
?
You know what I'm talking about.
You've seen a pencil, right?
You've used a pencil before, right, Okay, when you write with
a pencil, you write your ownstory, right, Okay, and you take
(43:22):
that pencil and you write yourown story.
Well, sometimes some people makemistakes when they write stuff
down, don't they.
You make all my mistakes.
You make mistakes.
I make mistakes, right?
You ever make a mistake in yourlife.
Yeah, I make mistakes in mylife.
Hang on, hang on just a second.
Okay.
When you're writing this stuffdown, all of a sudden you make a
mistake.
Well, what do you do with thatmistake?
(43:44):
You take that pencil and youflip it over and you start to
erase this stuff.
Okay, and you erase it and youre-correct it and you take that
pencil and you rewrite yourhistory story.
Okay, and I kind of thinkthat's where you're at with this
tonight.
Okay, that you have a chance torewrite your story, and I think
that that's what you can do isyou can rewrite your story
(44:04):
tonight.
Okay, Like I said, I don'tthink you're a bad person.
I really don't.
You know, I don't think thatthat's you at all, and you're
not out here.
You know doing things that areso bad that nobody wants to talk
to you, nobody wants to bearound you.
I don't think that's you, okay,but what I do think, okay, what
I do think is there's somestuff going on in you that you
and I need to talk about and whythese things happened.
(44:28):
Okay, and that's where we're atwith this.
Okay, Now I want you tounderstand something that you
need to be look at me, okay.
Look at me for just a second.
Okay, You're in a situationwhere you can help yourself
right now.
Okay, and that's what you needto do.
Okay, You've got to helpyourself, okay, Because the more
(44:51):
and more you let that snowballout of that hell and get bigger,
what's going to happen is goingto explode, and that's what's
going to happen with you.
You know you don't want thatbeing.
I don't think you did.
I wouldn't want that.
So we've got to rewrite history.
We've got to rewrite somethings, don't we?
Okay, and I think that's wherewe're at with all this, right.
Speaker 3 (45:11):
What happened with
your mom that night.
I don't know.
Why are you telling them all?
Speaker 4 (45:20):
Okay, listen to me.
Okay, sweetheart, you know whathappened to your mom.
Okay, you know.
Zach, sweetheart, listen to me,let's not go down that road.
Let's take your pencil andwrite a bunch of mistakes down
and then, when you need to startto point, that paper's gone and
guess what, you can't erase itagain.
You know, you can't erase itanymore.
(45:40):
Do you want that?
I don't think you do.
I think you're smart enough tounderstand where we're at with
this.
Okay, I think you know.
Okay, and I know that you know.
All right, I wouldn't be here ifI didn't know.
And I know the answer is a lotof these questions.
Okay, I already know them.
Okay, I know them and I'mgiving you a chance to be honest
(46:03):
with me.
Okay, because you don't wantthis thing to spiral out of
control.
Okay, no, no, no, yourboyfriend's in here.
Okay, he's here, he's in here.
Okay, all right, mm-hmm, and doyou think that we've not talked
to people?
No, i-i-i-i-i know Listen to me.
Before you say a whole lot, putthem under the lies, because
(46:23):
what's going to happen?
That snowball's going to get sohuge, sweetheart, that it's
going to explode on you andyou're never, ever going to get
yourself out of it, and do youunderstand me?
I understand you're going toget yourself out of it, so I
want to know okay, why, why, why, why did you guys hurt your mom
?
Okay, wait, you and yourSweetheart.
(46:47):
Look at me, look at me, look atme.
Uh-huh, I've got kids.
I've been doing this for a longtime.
I've got a time and I want youto understand something.
Don't do yourself that hard.
Don't go down that path.
Okay, listen to me for a second.
You go down that path andwhat's going to happen?
What do you think's going tohappen if you go down that path?
Speaker 3 (47:10):
It's not a path to go
down.
It's not a path to go down.
I don't tell lies.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
Okay, don't sit here
and lie to me, because if you do
, what's going to happen is it'sgoing to get bigger and bigger
and bigger.
You're not going to rememberthe ones that you've told other
people, okay, other people thatI've probably already talked to.
You understand that.
I understand, okay, um why, why?
Speaker 3 (47:33):
Would you like to
start from the beginning?
Speaker 4 (47:36):
I only want you to
start from the beginning, but I
want to we'll talk about thathere in a minute and I'm glad
you're making that progress.
Okay, I'm proud of you for that.
But the first thing that weneed to get out of this we're
out of the way right now is why.
That's the biggest thing youhad you know you've got friends.
You've got friends that loveyou.
Of course, I know I know youand your mom, yes, that friends
(47:57):
that care for you.
I know.
You know what.
They're down at the bottom ofthis hill.
That's your wall, and they'reasking all these questions.
They're asking why.
I know, I know.
Now, help me give them ananswer as to why.
Okay, I you have to give me ananswer as to why, because they
are so concerned about you, Iknow Um.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
I have a pot of
friends in Missouri, I know that
.
Okay and um-.
Speaker 4 (48:21):
I've never hurt my
mom.
Okay, so we are late.
Or do you really want to dateyourself?
You're dating yourself deeper.
No, seriously, I've never hurther.
Listen to me, listen to me.
Okay, I don't I don't playaround with that.
Okay, I'm not I don't playaround with this.
Okay, I didn't do it.
Listen to me, listen to me.
Don't let that snowball getbigger, because that's what
(48:44):
you're doing right now.
Okay, you you have a chance.
You have the opportunity righthere and right now, because once
I walk out that door and thatopportunity's gone guess what?
It's gone.
It's just like when thatpaper's taken away and you're
right hand penciled, you don'thave a chance to erase that
mistake.
Okay, okay.
Speaker 1 (49:01):
From a very, very
young age, dee Dee taught Gypsy
how to lie and manipulate.
In this interaction you can seeand hear the manipulation
coming out and honestly, itdoesn't surprise me.
It's what she was taught.
She was made to be devious.
(49:22):
Gypsy tried many times tocontrol the narrative of the
situation with Dee Dee and makeDetective Hancock believe she
had no idea about what happenedto Dee Dee or that she was
involved in anything.
Gypsy ultimately admits toeverything to Detective Hancock.
(49:45):
After their interrogations withDetectives Hancock and Maholi,
gypsy and Nick were charged withmurder and felony armed
criminal action.
They were extradited toMissouri and were held on a $1
million bond.
Under Missouri law, a charge offirst degree murder can carry
(50:07):
the death penalty or lifewithout parole.
The county prosecutor, danPatterson, announced that he
would not be seeking the deathpenalty for either Gypsy or Nick
, calling the case extraordinaryand unusual.
And this is where we're goingto leave off.
(50:29):
In part three, we will coverthe legal proceedings of Gypsy
and Nick and where they are now.
