Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back crime
connoisseurs.
I'm your host, grace D.
I'm sorry this has taken me solong to get out to you guys, but
I've been battling a wickedcold.
It was leaving me all congestedand groggy and feeling blah and
I didn't want to put outcontent that sounded that way.
(00:21):
I truly believe in quality overquantity and it was more
important for me to take thetime, heal and get to a point
where I could put out an episodethat you guys could listen to.
Because, let's be real, wedon't want to be listening to
episodes that have a meaningfulimpact and you can tell that
(00:44):
someone's sick.
It almost makes you start tolisten less, and these cases are
so important that I don't wantthe way I'm sounding with being
sick to take away from that.
So, with that being said, Ihope you guys enjoyed the case
of Gwen Shamblin and ReminetteFellowship Church.
(01:06):
Talk about a wild ride of acase.
That one was, and today's caseis one that gripped the nation
by storm.
Before we jump in, I want togive a trigger warning right off
the bat.
This episode will containtopics of child abuse, sexual
abuse of a child and molestation.
(01:27):
A mother and daughter, aninseparable pair, a doting
mother caring for her very illdaughter, a mother sacrificing
for her daughter confined to awheelchair, a daughter who, no
matter how bad it was, alwayskept a smile on her face.
(01:48):
The two were an incredible duo,or were they?
This was the public perceptionof the two, but what was really
happening behind closed doors?
One day, when the mother ismurdered, the truth of the two
would soon come to light, orshall I say the darkness would
(02:09):
be revealed the lies and tormenta young girl's life stolen from
her.
When would the tragedies end?
This is the case of Dee Dee andGypsy Rose Blanchard.
For this case, we have to startfrom the very beginning.
(03:00):
Before Gypsy was even born, rodBlanchard met Claudine Dee Dee
Petrie while he was in highschool.
Rod was 17 and Dee Dee was 24.
They started dating and threemonths after, dee Dee found out
she was pregnant.
Shortly after, rod married DeeDee because he felt this was the
(03:21):
right thing to do.
However, the feelings wouldn'tstay that way.
Three months after theirwedding, on Rod's 18th birthday,
he woke up and realized that hehad made a mistake.
He thought to himself you'remarried to a woman you're not
even in love with.
(03:42):
In his interview with PrisonConfessions of Gypsy Rose
Blanchard.
He told them quote I said, deeDee, I'm sorry, I'll always try
to be there as a father but as ahusband I don't feel that end
quote.
To say Dee Dee was upset bythis would be an understatement.
(04:03):
She grabbed their framedmarriage license and threw it on
the ground.
After the divorce, dee Dee movedback in with her parents in
Golden Meadow, louisiana.
On July 27, 1991, dee Dee gavebirth to a baby girl named Gypsy
Rose Blanchard.
(04:24):
Dee Dee liked the name Gypsyand Rod was a Guns N' Roses fan.
Rod remained in Gypsy's lifeearly in the beginning, but
shortly after the divorce Rodstarted dating a woman named
Christie.
He later married Christie andthey had two children together,
dylan and Mia.
Rod continued to make monthlychild support payments of $1,200
(04:49):
.
He also sent gifts and spokewith Gypsy on the phone.
However, dee Dee told neighborsthat Rod was an abusive drug
addict and alcoholic who nevercame to terms with Gypsy's
health issues and never sentthem any money.
Gypsy had a whole slew ofmedical problems.
When Gypsy was three months old, dee Dee told doctors that she
(05:13):
didn't seem to be breathingproperly.
She was diagnosed with sleepapnea and giving a breathing
apparatus.
Dee Dee called Rod and told himabout Gypsy's diagnosis the
first of many ailments that DeeDee would start to claim.
Dee Dee's father confirmed thatGypsy had a breathing machine
(05:34):
and said at night it would gooff when Gypsy stopped breathing
and they would have to go andwake her up.
After waking her up and shebegan breathing again, the
alarms on the machine would stop.
Claude said it was scary and Ican only imagine, especially at
such a young age for a child.
Gypsy's first surgery happenedbefore she was even one years
(05:59):
old.
Gypsy had a bad wandering eyethat needed to be corrected or
she could have gone blind in herright eye.
When Gypsy was old enough totalk, dee Dee instructed her not
to volunteer any information.
During the doctor'sappointments, dee Dee was always
the one relating Gypsy'smedical records.
(06:21):
Dee Dee told Rod that theirdaughter had a chromosomal
disorder that had led to hermany health issues.
Rod complimented Dee Dee for herdedicated care.
He said, quote I told Dee Deeshe was the best mother.
There's no way I can do whatshe was doing.
(06:43):
You have a sick child.
It's constantly 24, seventaking care of her and
everything I mean.
I always praised her and toldher good job.
End quote when Gypsy was oldenough to attend school, she
hadn't made it the year beforeDee Dee pulled her out.
(07:03):
She told Rod's new wife thatshe didn't trust the school to
give Gypsy her medications.
Evans Dee Dee's brother saidthat she started homeschooling
Gypsy but that stopped when shewas in the second grade.
Gypsy spent a lot of time withher grandpa, claude Dee Dee's
(07:24):
dad.
Now I've seen many articlessaying when she was 7 or 8, but
in the prison confessions ofGypsy Rose Blanchard, gypsy told
the producers she was 5.
So at some point between 5 and8, gypsy was on the back of her
grandpa's motorcycle when theygot into an accident.
(07:44):
Dee Dee made a bigger deal outof the accident and Gypsy's
injuries than it was accordingto family members.
Gypsy's leg was scraped and herleg was put into a brace.
Then one day Dee Dee walkedinto the room and had a
wheelchair with her and, according to Gypsy, dee Dee very
(08:05):
bluntly told Gypsy to use thewheelchair.
By the time Gypsy was 8, deeDee had claimed that Gypsy had
leukemia, paralysis and musculardystrophy the reasons for using
a wheelchair and why she had afeeding tube.
(08:26):
Dee Dee's brother, evan's Petrie, told prison confessions with
Gypsy Rose Blanchard about atime when there was a birthday
party and all the kids werejumping on a trampoline, gypsy
asked him if she could jump too.
Dee Dee was at the grocerystore and Evan told her yeah, go
ahead.
So Gypsy got up out of herwheelchair, walked over to the
(08:49):
trampoline and started jumpingon it and was having fun.
According to Evan, as soon asshe saw Dee Dee pull up, gypsy
just dropped, as if her legs hadstopped working.
Evan said his sister was so madand started screaming, saying
things like quote, don't youknow she's crippled.
(09:09):
And quote.
He replied quote, we all seedifferent.
And quote.
She got Gypsy off thetrampoline back into her
wheelchair and took her inside, where she remained for the rest
of the day.
Rod had heard from Dee Dee'sfamily members that Gypsy could
(09:30):
walk, but given how fragile hisrelationship with Gypsy was
because of Dee Dee, he didn'tnotice confronting her in fear
of Dee Dee keeping Gypsy awayfrom him.
He admits that he should havedone his due diligence and done
more for Gypsy.
Around this time Dee Dee's mombecame very ill and had passed
(09:54):
away.
When this happened.
Her brother, evans, said thatDee Dee's world just came
crashing down.
She stole her mom's creditcards and racked up the bills.
She even had a warrant out forher arrest in Lafouche Parish
for writing bad checks.
In 2000, dee Dee and Gypsy werein a bad car accident.
(10:16):
It was so bad that Dee Deenearly lost her foot and she had
to recover in the hospital forquite some time.
While Dee Dee recovered in thehospital, gypsy stayed with her
grandparents.
She loved her grandpa, claude, and had great memories up until
this point.
Before we continue, I want togive a trigger warning.
(10:41):
We're going to be discussing thesexual abuse of a child and
molestation.
Gypsy was nine years old whenthe car accident happened.
Claude took Gypsy home toGolden Meadow while Dee Dee
recovered At this point.
Gypsy has had multipleprocedures, has been diagnosed
(11:04):
with leukemia, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, has had a
feeding tube put in and has beenconfined to a wheelchair.
Gypsy never imagined her lifecould get any darker.
According to Gypsy, at this timeshe was sexually abused and
molested by Claude.
She told producers with prisonconfessions of Gypsy, rose
(11:28):
Blanchard, that Claude wouldtake her out of her wheelchair
and bring her into a closet orout to the shack that was in the
back behind the house where hewould do woodworking and where
he would perform sexual acts onher.
He would make her touch him andhe would touch her.
Gypsy said at nine she didn'tthink she knew it was wrong, but
(11:52):
then Claude would tell her notto tell anyone, saying, quote
you don't want Papa to go tojail, do you end quote.
Claude participated in thedocu-series and the producers
confronted him about this.
However, they did so in a veryparticular way that his response
raised some red flags for me.
(12:13):
Here's how the interaction wentinterviewer Gypsy told us that
there may have been some abusethat went on in this house.
Claude, abuse with who?
Interviewer with you?
Claude, gypsy, gypsy, yeah, oh,no, no, I never the first.
(12:36):
I've heard of it.
We always would play togetherand always stuff together and
stuff like that.
But that's not true at all.
No, she would try to touch me.
I said no, don't do that.
She was the one that was tryingto touch me.
I said don't do that.
When she started that, when shewas about four years old, I
(12:59):
said don't do that and that'sabout it.
But she, she was trying totouch me, hi.
So the thing that raised redflags for me is that the
interviewer never specified thetype of abuse and Claude
immediately denied everything, made it sexual and then blip the
(13:21):
script, putting it all on Gypsyas a four year old.
To me that just raises so manyred flags and it's gross, it's
disgusting, it's icky and I justwanted to smack the man.
And if the allegations are nottrue, still the way that he
(13:43):
handled himself.
I just want to smack the manand I really hope I'm not alone
on that.
One.
Evans told prison confessionsof Gypsy Rose Blanchard that he
believes this isn't true butdoes believe that Gypsy was told
this and that it was drilledinto her by her mom for
attention, to throw thespotlight on someone other than
(14:06):
herself.
But Gypsy says this issomething that she 100%
remembers happened to her.
Gypsy kept quiet.
She didn't want to get him introuble and when Didi got out of
the hospital they stayed withClaude for a bit.
His mom had recently passedaway and Claude remarried to
(14:29):
Laura May.
In an interview with the prisonconfessions of Gypsy Rose
Blanchard, gypsy's cousin Bobbyrecalled one time he was
visiting his grandfather Claude.
According to Bobby, quote Oneday my grandfather and Gypsy
were hanging out and Gypsy seesthe roundup in the corner and
tells my grandfather oh, that'sthe vitamins that mom gives to
(14:53):
grandma, laura May End quote itwas known that Deety was a
vengeful person and that she didnot like Laura May.
One day Laura May and Deety gotinto a heated fight and Laura
May told her she didn't want herthere anymore.
So after this, deety packed uptheir belongings, got Gypsy in
(15:15):
the car and off they went.
Deety started moving her andGypsy around all over.
Rod used to see Gypsy three tofour times a year, but the more
they moved, the further awaythey got from LaFouche Parish
and it was more difficult forRod to visit.
Deety told Gypsy that Rod wasabusive.
(15:39):
She told her that one night hehad picked Gypsy up by the neck
and thrown her across the roomtowards Deety.
But that had never happened.
Deety had a feeding tube put inwhen Gypsy's weight was too low.
When she was diagnosed withepilepsy, the doctors prescribed
(16:01):
Tegretol which made her teethcrumble from inside of her mouth
, causing them to have to bepulled.
Deety also later insisted Gypsyhad asthma and hearing and
visual issues and had doctorsprescribe medications and
perform surgeries for theseconditions.
When Gypsy was 13, she got herfirst period and Deety did not
(16:28):
educate her about it.
She never taught her about padsor tampons she told Gypsy to
use one of her diapers.
In 2005, deety and Gypsy wereliving in Slidel, louisiana,
when Hurricane Katrina madelandfall.
They stayed in the shelter forat least a month and a half.
(16:50):
When they went back to theapartment they were living in,
there was nothing butdevastation.
Deety received assistance torelocate her and Gypsy from
Louisiana to Missouri.
Hurricane Katrina provided theperfect excuse for Deety not
having Gypsy's medical records.
She claimed that they were alldamaged by the tragedy.
(17:13):
Deety continued to take Gypsyto medical appointments.
As Gypsy got older, deety beganto lie about her age, going as
far as to altering the dates onGypsy's birth certificate.
When they arrived in Missouriin September 2005, they stayed
at Mercy Hospital's temporaryhousing in Aurora.
(17:35):
Deety told neighbors theirapartment in Louisiana and
Gypsy's medical records had beendestroyed in Hurricane Katrina
In March of 2008,.
With no reason not to believe aseemingly devoted mother and her
sick daughter, the localHabitat for Humanity built a
(17:56):
pink, accessible home inSpringfield with a wheelchair
ramp for them.
The community rallied aroundthem in other ways hosting
charity events, giving donationsand sponsoring gypsy for trips
and medical care.
The entire time, dee Deecontinued to bask in the
(18:17):
attention that she received forbeing such a devoted caretaker.
Between hospital stays, gypsyand Dee Dee flew across the
country to concerts, celebritymeet and greets, gallows and
even Disney World, with expensespaid by charitable
organizations including theMake-A-Wish Foundation.
They were local celebrities intheir Missouri town and the
(18:42):
subject of many local newsprofiles and articles.
Gypsy gave speeches about hercondition around the country at
various conferences, includingRelay for Life events.
Dee Dee and Gypsy also receivedgifts and cash donations from
Good Samaritans, includingcountry music star Miranda
(19:03):
Lambert.
When they moved to Missouri, drRob Steele became Gypsy's
pediatrician.
Dee Dee had been able toconvince people before because
she had some nurses training soshe could accurately describe
symptoms and she even gave Gypsymedications to mimic certain
conditions.
(19:24):
She was also charming andseemed devoted to her daughter.
When Dee Dee told him that allof Gypsy's medical records were
lost in Hurricane Katrina, heasked Dee Dee about Gypsy's
different ailments.
She couldn't really give exactspecifics to his questions.
So Dr Steele contacted Gypsy'sother doctors back in Louisiana
(19:48):
and ran his own tests.
Medable tests often showedinconclusive or contradictory
results regarding Gypsy'sdiagnosis.
When Gypsy was 14, she sawneurologist Dr Bernardo
Flasterstein.
He ordered an MRI and bloodtest which found no
(20:12):
abnormalities.
After contacting Gypsy'sdoctors in New Orleans.
He learned that Gypsy'soriginal muscular biopsy had
come back negative, whichundermined Dee Dee's
self-reported diagnosis, as wellas the claim that all of
Gypsy's medical records had beendestroyed by flooding.
(20:33):
In September 2008, according toGypsy's pediatrician, dr Steele,
his nurse came to him withthree documents and on the three
separate documents were threedifferent birthdays for Gypsy.
They had the same month and day, but each had a different year.
(20:54):
The dates were July 27, 1991,july 27, 1993, and July 27, 1995
.
The nurse said to Dr Steelequote I'm now really concerned.
End quote.
After going over the documents,dr Steele called the Department
(21:19):
of Children's Services and saidquote I am concerned, this
child has been kidnapped.
End quote.
Dcs came to the Blanchard hometo investigate the doctor's
claims.
They kept Dee Dee in the livingroom and spoke with Gypsy alone
in her room.
They asked her if she had anybruises, who Dee Dee was to her
(21:42):
and things of that nature.
She could hear the other DCSworkers talking to Dee Dee.
Dcs told Dee Dee she needed toobtain a real birth certificate
for Gypsy.
Dee Dee played it off as if shewas just a mom in a difficult
situation just trying her best.
(22:02):
Dcs eventually left, but theynever followed up.
Dr Steele didn't know whathappened after his report, so he
called Dee Dee and asked her tobring Gypsy in.
When they arrived he asked DeeDee if anyone from the state had
contacted her and Dee Dee saidthey did.
(22:24):
Dr Steele told Dee Dee quote Iwant you to know that I was the
one who called them.
End quote.
At that point he asked Dee Deeto leave the room because he
wanted to speak with Gypsyprivately.
Dee Dee was hesitant but agreedand stepped out.
Dr Steele asked Gypsy quote Iseverything okay?
(22:50):
Is there anything you want totell me?
This is a safe place, end quote.
Gypsy replied quote no,everything is fine.
My mom loves me and I love mymom.
End quote.
Dr Steele's concerns were stillthere, but there was nothing
(23:12):
else that he could do.
After the DCS visit, dee Deebecame increasingly paranoid
about doctors and social workers.
She put filters on the windowsso that it would be difficult
for people to see inside thehome, but it also prevented
Gypsy from being able to seeoutside, feeling more like a
(23:32):
prisoner within her own home.
In a letter obtained by ABCNews from Dr Flasterstein to
Gypsy's primary care doctor, hewrote, quote I believe that the
mother suffers frommunch-housing.
By proxy end quote.
The outlet found another doctorhad called authorities in 2009
(23:56):
when he could not find anysymptoms to support what Dee Dee
alleged to be wrong with herdaughter.
Medical records show that Gypsyand Dee Dee visited more than
150 medical professionals overthe years.
According to the ABC Newsreport On Gypsy's 18th birthday,
(24:19):
rod called to wish her a happybirthday.
When Dee Dee answered the phone, he said he was calling to tell
Gypsy happy 18th birthday, butshe told him not to say that,
and when he questioned her as towhy not, she said that Gypsy
didn't know she was 18.
This was strange and didn'tmake any sense to Rod, but it
(24:41):
turns out Dee Dee had told Gypsythat she was only 14.
In 2011, dee Dee took Gypsy tothe sci-fi convention called
VisionCon.
Here, gypsy met a guy that shebumped into with her wheelchair
and they talked for a bit beforeparting ways.
Later, the guy found Gypsy onFacebook.
(25:03):
Gypsy and Dee Dee had a sharedFacebook, but Gypsy also had a
secret Facebook account and thisguy had found her secret
account.
The guy's name was Dan, and thetwo started talking and
immediately hit it off.
Dan was 36, and Gypsy was 19,but she thought she was only 15
(25:26):
at this time.
Dan was the first person thatGypsy confided in and actually
told that she could walk.
Gypsy and Dan had feelings foreach other but knew with her
supposed age they couldn't betogether.
That wasn't until Gypsy foundher Medicaid card and learned
(25:48):
the truth about her age.
The Medicaid card had Gypsy'sbirthdate of July 27, 1991,
revealing that she was really 19years old.
She told Dan about finding theMedicaid card and what she had
learned about her actual age.
Dan told Gypsy to leave, butshe said she couldn't because
(26:11):
Dee Dee would find her and Dansaid that he would protect her.
After this, dan and Gypsy cameup with a plan for Gypsy to
leave in the middle of the nightand to run away together.
They planned on moving Gypsy tohis farm in Arkansas.
One night Gypsy stole Dee Dee'sphone while she was asleep and
(26:34):
she texted Dan.
He asked if tonight could bethe night they run away together
.
Gypsy said okay and packed abag.
She packed a few costumesbecause she didn't really have
any real clothes and wore a wigto help disguise herself.
Gypsy also took some pills andmoney from Dee Dee.
(26:55):
Gypsy hitchhiked to a housewhere Dan's friend lived.
Gypsy left a note for Dee Deeso that she wouldn't worry.
In the note, gypsy wrote thatshe knew she was really 19 and
that she was an independentwoman and loved her, but that it
was time for her to spread herwings and fly.
(27:16):
Gypsy was excited to see Dan,but after she got to Dan's
friend's house, dan told Gypsythat he was on parole and that
he couldn't leave the state.
Gypsy immediately thought oh mygod, she's going to find me.
When Dee Dee woke up around 4amand found that Gypsy had run off
(27:40):
, she started looking around forclues.
Dee Dee knocked over Gypsy'sbackpack and her phone fell out.
Dee Dee saw texts with Dan andstarted calling mutual friends
from the convention to try andtrack them down.
One of the mutual friends toldDee Dee where Gypsy was.
(28:00):
Dee Dee headed off to get herdaughter back.
She arrived around 8am whileGypsy and Dan were asleep.
Dan's friend woke Gypsy upsaying your mother is here.
Gypsy's heart sank upon hearingthat her fears had become a
reality.
She saw Dee Dee walk throughthe door and the first thing
(28:25):
Gypsy said was quote.
I know I'm 19 and I can be hereif I want to end quote Dee Dee
asked her where the pills andmoney were and Gypsy gave them
back to her.
Dee Dee then asked if theycould talk on the porch and
Gypsy agreed.
She told Gypsy if she came homewith her she'd allow Gypsy to
(28:50):
see Dan.
Gypsy believed Dee Dee anddecided to go home with her.
She realized that she wascompletely dependent on Dee Dee.
On their way home, gypsyconfronted Dee Dee about her age
, but Dee Dee continued to denythat she was 19.
Gypsy said she wanted to seesomething in writing about the
(29:14):
age that Dee Dee was claimingher to be.
They stopped at Staples and DeeDee had a copy of Gypsy's birth
certificate.
She went inside and 10 minuteslater came back out with Gypsy's
birth certificate, which thensaid she was born in 1995.
After seeing the birthcertificate, gypsy believed Dee
(29:36):
Dee.
She saw it with her own eyes.
She loved Dee Dee.
She was her mother after all.
Once they got home, gypsy neversaw what was coming next.
Dee Dee chained Gypsy to thebed.
She proceeded to smash herlaptop and cell phone.
(29:56):
Gypsy was chained to the bedfor two weeks.
Dee Dee used handcuffs and adog leash.
The dog leash was connected toDee Dee so that at any time
Gypsy moved, dee Dee would know.
Once they got home, gypsy neversaw what was coming next.
(30:17):
Dee Dee chained Gypsy to thebed.
She proceeded to smash herlaptop and cell phone.
Gypsy was chained to the bedfor two weeks.
Dee Dee used handcuffs and adog leash.
The dog leash was connected toDee Dee so that at any time
Gypsy moved, dee Dee would know.
(30:40):
Gypsy was at Dee Dee's mercy foreverything the bathroom, food,
something to drink and up untilthis point Dee Dee had never
laid a hand on Gypsy.
But when Gypsy ran away andstarted going against Dee Dee,
this enraged and foiled thingsfor her.
Anything that Dee Dee founddispleasing, she'd hit Gypsy
(31:05):
with a coat hanger or her handor fist, or would punch her in
the leg.
Gypsy begged and pleaded withDee Dee trying to regain her
trust.
When it finally happened, deeDee unchained Gypsy.
But now more than ever, dee Deewas extra sensitive to when
(31:25):
Gypsy would move in bed.
Dee Dee kept a knife by the bedand, according to Gypsy, dee
Dee said that she would pay ifshe tried to run away again.
Gypsy said that Dee Dee put ahex on her.
Now Dee Dee believed in magicand witchcraft, so it was very
(31:45):
believable to Gypsy that the hexwas real.
According to Gypsy, didi boughta mason jar and inside of it she
put pictures of Gypsy, a cow'stongue and a little of Gypsy's
menstrual blood.
She buried it in the backyardand told Gypsy quote you will
(32:06):
never find love, you will neverbe happy, end quote.
Gypsy realized she needed outof the relationship with Didi.
She thought maybe she couldwait for Didi to die for natural
causes.
But how long would that take?
She could live well into her70s and by then Gypsy would be
(32:27):
too old to do the things shewanted in life settle down and
have kids.
She knew she needed to dosomething to escape, but what?
And this is where we're goingto leave off for part one.
In part two we'll be discussingthe lengths that Gypsy went to
(32:49):
to escape the horrendous torturefrom the hands of her mother,
the woman who was supposed tolove and protect her.
We'll also be discussing whathappens to Gypsy after that and
where she is now, and whetheryou believe that Gypsy is this
innocent victim or a mastermanipulator.
(33:12):
At the end of the day, bothDidi and Gypsy are victims in
this case, for very differentreasons, but we cannot ignore
the fact that they are bothvictims and we are able to feel
bad for what is happening tothem in those moments of time
(33:33):
while they're victims.
