Morning Ahead. This podcast contains verysensitive topics such as missing persons, unsolve

(00:23):
cases, haunted houses, and paranilmy activity. These epi toopics can contain
very upsetting sensitive details and stories. Please listen responsibly. Welcome to Missy Mysteries,
a podcast in the business of ghostlyspooks and chilling crimes. I'm your
host, Keiey. In today's episodeis a story of a California woman whose

(00:45):
husband may be charged for her death, but her family is still looking for
answers. Maya Miliette was living inChula Vista, California, when she was
last seen on January seventh, twentytwenty one. Nine months after her disappearance,
on October nineteenth, twenty twenty one, her husband, Larry Miliette,
was arrested for her murder. Eventhough this arrest was made, Maya has

(01:08):
not been able to be put torest as search for her remains continue.
But this is not where her storybegins. Maya was born on May first,
eighteen eighty one, in South Providenceof Illicos, Sir, Philippines.
She is the fifth child born toher parents, Pablito and Naomi Tablente,

(01:30):
and goes by the nickname may sinceshe was named after the month she was
born in. Maya spent her childhoodin the Philippines, where she loved and
excelled in school, before her familyimmigrated to Honolulu, Hawaii after years of
waiting in nineteen ninety five. InHawaii, she attended Redford High School,

(01:52):
where she participated in school clubs likedance and theater, and a variety of
academic activities on top of her schoolingand school activities. At seventeen years old,
she found time to hold down ajob at the McDonald's by the Pearl
Harbor in Hawaii. While working atthis McDonald's, she was able to graduate

(02:12):
high school with honors and meet aboyfriend named Larry Meliete. After high school,
the two got married at nineteen yearsold on May twenty first, two
thousand, while Maya attended the Universityof Hawaii and Larry went off to Virginia
for Navy training. Eventually, Mayaand Larry would move to San Diego,

(02:32):
California, where Maya continued her collegeeducation at the University of California who Are
She excelled even further in her education, graduating with honors and a major in
international studies. After college, shestarted her career as a government employee,
working as a civilian contract specialist atthe Naval base in San Diego. With

(02:55):
a good job and stability, shefinally felt like she Andy could provide their
children with a good life, andthe two welcome their first daughter and child
in two thousand and ten. Onlya year later, in twenty eleven,
they welcome their second daughter to theworld. Then in twenty sixteen, they

(03:15):
welcome their last child and only sonto their family. Maya was a good
and devoted mother to her children. She loved her children more than anyone else
and would move mountains for them. She wanted to provide the best for them
and love to travel with her children. Maya is described as being very charitable

(03:35):
and giving, which is something shetried to pass down to her children.
She would never hesitate to help someonein need and taught her children to be
the same way. When they wouldtravel to the Philippines, they filled backpacks
with lots of school supplies and goodiesto help others in rule communities of the
Philippines. This is something that sheplanned with the children every time they went

(03:57):
to visit Maya's home country. Mayaloved not only traveling with her kids,
but camping. She was a verybusy person, but she made time for
hobbies like hiking, dirt biking, and music. She even found time to
create a YouTube channel where she postedvideos of herself singing covers of songs and
her own original songs. Maya wasloved by so many and just very actively

(04:23):
in her family and friends' lives. This is why when she went missing in
early January of twenty twenty one,it shook the community of two lovest to
California, where she was living withher husband and children. January seventh,
twenty twenty one, was the lastconfirmed sighting of Maya, and her family
heard from her. According to Larry, in an interview he gave Court TV,

(04:46):
he and may at this point hadbeen having marital issues for over a
year and seemed to argue often. On the day she went missing, he
said that the two of them gotin an argument and that she had left
the house, but he swore thatshe was home that next day. On
the eighth because he had heard hercooking. Larry told the reporters he didn't
realize she was missing until her parentscame around asking questions on Saturday the ninth,

(05:11):
although for Maya's family, they wentonly a few days without hearing from
her before they started to question whereshe was. January eighth and ninth,
they started to reach out to Larryasking where she could be. Different members
of the family got different answers towhere she went, which led her sister
to reach out to the Trulivista policeon January ninth to report her missing.

(05:32):
They began to create missing prison flyers, hoping she was just away and okay
somewhere, but they truly began toworry on January tenth, when Maya missed
her own daughter's birthday the next day, on January eleventh, a former criminal
defense investigator for the US Navy,Billy Little, heard about Maya's disappearance and

(05:55):
offered his help to her family. He started his help right away on January
eleventh, when he went to thehome of Maya to look for clues and
talk to Larry, who he saidseemed unconcerned about his wife and more concerned
about airing out his home. Itwas only a few days later, on
January thirteenth, when the first officialsearch for Maya was underway at Mount Saint

(06:17):
Miguel Park. That day, Larryspoke out for the first time as well.
On this day, Larry did aphone interview with the local news station
to encourage may to reach out orto come home, and shared he was
hopeful all the news coverage would helpbring her home. At this point in
the case, I'm pretty much goingto be running through a timeline, and
some of this will happen back toback, some will be a little spaced

(06:41):
out over time, but overall,it seems the police acted very fast in
the investigation into Maya's disappearance. Withthat being said, the first big step
for the investigation into her disappearance happenedon January twenty third, when a search
warrant was issued for Maya and Larry'shome with the goal of finding lead into
her whereabouts. During this investigators actuallysees some of Larry's guns. A few

(07:05):
weeks after the search of the home, on February fifth, Maya's sister,
who from my research, seemed toreally take the lead into finding Maya.
How the press conference with the tulaUS the police asking for any information that
would help bring her home. Februaryalso brought lots of searching for Maya from
a group called Help Find Maya. This group searched from Maroon Valley to Ote

(07:30):
Lake to the Anti Desert area. This group conducts searches, prayer groups and
has put together a very helpful websitewith all resources information on Maya as well
as a very well put together descriptionon who Maya is. While this Help
Find Maya group has led searches allover southern California, police and attorney Billy

(07:53):
Little continued their own investigations into Maya'sdisappearance. In March of twenty twenty one,
LEAs investigation uncovered evidence that Larry hadmade multiple online purchases, one for
a love spell to help his andMaya's marriage, and another after this spell
didn't seem to work. Around Decemberof twenty twenty, he requested that a

(08:16):
Filipino which would perform a spell workthat could harm Maya, saying quote,
please punish may and incapacitate her enoughso she can't leave the house. It's
time to take the gloves off.Billy's evidence was later confirmed by the actual
tulivist. The police even daring additionalevidence that Larry requested a hex or spell

(08:39):
around December of twenty twenty on aman that Maya had a relationship with outside
of their marriage, when he requestedquote punish this man's unborn child. Meanwhile,
in May of twenty twenty two,the tulivist the police department served multiple
search warrants on Maya and Larry's home, again to Larry being served with a

(09:01):
gun violence restraining order on May seventh, ending in the surrender of more of
his firearms. Now the biggest stepin this investigation came nine months after Maya's
disappearance on October nineteenth, twenty twentyone, when Larry was arrested for the
murder of his thirty nine year oldwife and mother to his children, Maya

(09:24):
Miliate. Larry has pleaded not guiltyto this charge and maintains his innocence,
saying that Maya willingly left and abandonedhim and the children. Not too long
after his arrest, Larry appeared incourt for a bail hearing, where the
prosecution argued that he should be heldwithout bail, arguing that he is not

(09:45):
only a flight risk with every reasonto flee, but that he was a
danger to the public, especially theman whom Maya had an affair with,
using the hecks on his unborn childas evidence of this, as well as
that he may be danger to histhree children. The court ultimately ruled in
the favor of the prosecution, denyingbail and placing a criminal restraining order for

(10:09):
the three children, meaning he wasnot allowed contact with the children while they
were safely placed in family members' homes. To this day, there is currently
a custody battle for the three children. But morally, I don't like to
bring the children into the podcast unlessthey are the ones missing, for not
only their own privacy, especially asthey age, but safety. All we

(10:31):
need to know is that they aresafe and currently being cared for. As
for Larry and for his criminal charges. If you're a long term true crime
listener or just know anything about theAmerican justice system, especially here in California
with the pandemic, everything moves slow. Larry since October of twenty twenty one,

(10:52):
has been in prison. He wasset for a preliminary trial in June
of twenty twenty two, but defensewas able to put this on hold so
his mental competence could be tested. In August of twenty twenty two, the
test began to test Larry's competence tostand trial. He was found competent to
stand trial, and his preliminary hearingbegan the week of January tenth, ending

(11:16):
on January twenty six, twenty twentythree, with the verdict that he will
stand trial for the murder of Mayain September of twenty twenty three. A
preliminary trial is basically the trial beforethe trial. It's where the judge decides
if there is enough evidence for thedefense to go to trial for the crime
they are being accused of. Inmurder cases, especially one like this,

(11:39):
or the remains of the victim havenever been found, It's an important step
in the justice system. A lotcame out in this preliminary hearing. Now
I have said this before, butI'm going to be careful what I put
on to misty mysteries and hopes tonot cause any harm or interference in the
process of justice. I will coversome of what was very publicly shared pieces

(12:03):
of evidence. One of the biggestpieces of evidence was that the day Maya
went missing, she had a meetingwith a divorce attorney after a year of
a struggling marriage with Larry. Shehad also sent a text to her loved
ones saying quote, after Laura's birthdayparty, I'm going to file for divorce.
If Larry tries to call you, don't answer the phone call. If

(12:26):
something happens to me, it's goingto be Larry. Testimony from Maya's sister
in law also revealed that Larry hadsent messages saying things like quote, I'm
trying to cage her in an invisiblecage and I'm willing to sell my soul
in a lengthy text regarding how farhe would go to save his own marriage.

(12:48):
He had also sent pictures of whatappeared to be a blood or wax
soaked altar to a friend. Phoneevidence was also found from Maya's eye cloud,
since her phone was shot off theday she went missing and has never
been found. This Iclaude backup revealeda secret instagram of Maya's which was being
used to make contact and maintain arelationship with a man outside of her marriage,

(13:13):
along with a video she recorded whereshe was discussing the affair with Larry,
and in this she asked him ifsomething like this worth killing me over.
Other video evidence was revealed, oneshowing Maya's car moving on the day
of her disappearance, and another froma neighbor revealing what sounds like two gunshots
coming from Maya and Larry's house onthe day she went missing. Lastly,

(13:37):
the man she was having a relationshipwith did give the police an alibi for
the day of Maya's disappearance. Wherein the World Is Crime in San Diego
podcast does a great job at coveringthe hearings from day one to an episode
for every piece of evidence revealed. If you are further interested in the details

(13:58):
of the US hearing for now,I want to remind you that Maya Meliete
still has not been found. Therehas been searches with cadaver dogs and these
searches still continue. The search teamsare in need of volunteers with many different
skill sets, including certified divers, drones, sonar equipment, and much more.

(14:20):
If this is something you can doand want to help, please check
out the volunteer form in the episodedescription. This is going to be the
end of Missy Mysteries episode today. If you like the episode or the podcast,
reviews are always appreciated and welcomed.I'm going to be ending this episode
with the little clip of the musicMaya puts out on YouTube fool. Thank
