במשך שלושה עשורים, החוזה היה פשוט וברור: אתם (ארגונים, משווקים, יוצרי תוכן) תיצרו תוכן איכותי, וגוגל, מנוע החיפוש הכל יכול, ישלח אליכם גולשים.
זה היה מודל סימביוטי מושלם. מנוע החיפוש של גוגל השתמש בתוכן שלכם ו"בתמורה" אותו מנוע שלח אליכם טראפיק.
המודל הזה לא היה חף מבעיות. גוגל פעלה באופן דורסני וחד-צדדי, היא פשוט שתתה כל תוכן שיכלה למצוא, כולל סריקה של ספרים ויצירות אחרות. היא אף נתבעה על כך. אבל כל עוד היא החזירה ליוצרי התוכן במטבע של טראפיק, אפשר היה לעצום עין.
אבל בתקופה האחרונה החוזה הזה הופר חד-צדדית ואנחנו עדים למה שמכונה "הניתוק הגדול" (The Great Decoupling).
