In this *spell* of an episode, magic, penetration, entanglement, and love emerge as steps toward understanding and willingness to be changed by others (sometimes oh-so awkwardly).

We enter with the Buddhist concept of PENETRATION (via some bibliomancy!)—not just observing from a distance, but entering deeply into experiences and relationships to truly understand them—where Dana shares a recent evolutionary discomfort experience with group work that involved Palestine, mentorship, and unexpectedly opened space for profound connection and transformation.

Magic and synchronicity can bring you to the observation deck of reality, but one must risk and leap to get to true understanding. What's on the other side? Let's find out and embrace both the joy and struggle of humaning together!

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Crying in my jacuzzi, crying in my jacuzzi, crying in
my jacuzzi, crying in myjacuzzi.

(00:28):
I believe that all texts, books, anything can be divinatory.
Texts, books, anything can bedivinatory.
But if we set our intention toreceive mode which you know can

(00:56):
be its own body of work but ifwe attune ourselves to curiosity
, to receptivity, to guidancethat we can open ourselves to
such things and receive fromreally anything around us.
This is part of what I considerslow down medicine that if
we're moving slow enough, ifwe're moving with enough
presence, if we're cultivatingtrust little by little, if we're

(01:19):
opening with warmth toourselves, that we can, as I
said, flip ourselves to receivemode.
And so I did just that thismorning and I was walking
through my little library areaand there was a book, sort of

(01:40):
half sticking out and mybooks-coded it was in the red
section, and so I went to tip itback in and I thought, oh,
there's a reason that this bookis tipped out.
Was I in the magical library?
No, is there still magicavailable to me at all moments?
Yes, do I forget that?

(02:01):
Sometimes, absolutely.
Do I feel an effervescingtingle of delight when I
remember?
Yeah, I do so.
I pulled the book out and it isone of my favorites that I have
actually shared a bit of here ina past episode tick not hans,
the heart of understanding.
It's a slim little edition, what's up Slim Commentaries on

(02:26):
the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra.
And the Prajnaparamita HeartSutra is regarded as, in essence
, the essence of Buddhistteaching, and in the spring of
1987, thich Nhat Hanh, vietnamese Zen master, poet,
peace activist, offered a seriesof talks and retreats and

(02:48):
lectures around the UnitedStates.
And so this slim but potentbook you're a compilation of his
commentaries on this ancienttext.
Every time I pick this book upmaybe a few times a year,
sometimes more, maybe sometimesless there's always something,

(03:08):
even if it's something that I'veread a hundred times.
Sometimes it just hitsdifferent because I'm different,
because the moment's different,because I'm more open or I'm
grieving, or there's some partof me and there's not an
incorrect or correct way to meetany guidance.

(03:33):
And so today I opened to thisone section.
It's right at the beginning,it's called the Way of
Understanding.
It's right at the beginning,it's called the Way of
Understanding and honestly Ikind of loved it because I woke
up having some very weird sassydreams.
Check out the Colin Farrell sextape.
And this whole section is aboutpenetration.

(03:57):
Bet you didn't see that coming, did you?
Yeah?
So the first quote is from thePrajnaparamita Heart Sutra, and
then comes Thich Nhat Hanh'scommentaries.
Okay, so the quote is afterthis penetration, he overcame
all pain.
I'll read a little bit from thecommentary Penetration means to

(04:17):
enter something, not just tostand outside of it.
When we understand something, wecannot just stand outside and
observe it.
We have to enter deeply into itand be one with it in order to
really understand.
If we want to understand aperson, we have to feel their
feelings, suffer theirsufferings and enjoy their joy.
Penetration is an excellentword.

(04:38):
The word comprehend is made upof the Latin roots com, which
means together in mind, andprehendere, which means to grasp
it or pick it up.
To comprehend something meansto pick it up and be one with it
.
There is another way tounderstand something.
If we only look at the sheet ofpaper as an observer standing
outside, we cannot understand itcompletely.

(05:00):
We have to penetrate it.
We have to be a cloud, be thesunshine, be the lager.
If we can enter it and beeverything that is in it, our
understanding of the sheet ofpaper will be perfect.
There's an Indian story about agrain of salt that wanted to
know just how salty the ocean is.
So it jumped in and became onewith the water of the ocean.

(05:22):
In this way, the grain of saltgained a perfect understanding
In the light of the grain ofsalt, gained a perfect
understanding In the light ofBuddhist meditation.
Love is impossible withoutunderstanding.
You cannot love someone if youdo not understand him or her.
If you don't understand and youlove.
That is not love, it issomething else.
It is something else.
Oh hi, it's me, janet.

(05:48):
This is an ad.
One of my favorite things in thewhole wide world is an esoteric
witchy shop.
Lucky for me, milk ThistleApothecary is here in the high
desert.
My bud, karina, is a masterfulherbalist and their shop carries
all kinds of amazing tincturesand potions and teas made by

(06:10):
witches, wizards, magicians, queerdos, weirdos from all over
and many from the high desert.
All ethically crafted naturalremedies and some fabulous made
in house tinctures and teas.
Deep sleep tea is fuckingamazing.
Knock you right out with thesweetest of dreams.
Thanks to the blue lotus in themix, their website is chock

(06:32):
full of delights.

So today I was in a class and wedid a practice exercise and
there are several dozen peoplein the class and for these group

(06:55):
practices they ask forvolunteers.
We all put our name in thelittle Zoom hat and on with the
show.
Now I've put my name in theZoom hat many times and never
been selected.
And the second I did it today.
I knew I would be selected.
I could just feel it andinstinctively I buttoned my

(07:18):
shirt up all the way to my neck, all the way to the top button,
which, if you know me, usually, like my boobs, are basically
hanging out right.
I just button down as low aspossible.
I've always been this way.
So I button all the way up andthen I get called on and my
heart starts pounding and theissue at hand had to do with

(07:44):
certain kinds of relationships, and so I brought up that
relationship as it was on myheart, given the topic and that
there had been some conflictbetween me and this person over
Palestine and the genocide inGaza, over Palestine and the

(08:09):
genocide in Gaza.
Y'all, I am not kidding thebiggest gust of wind just came
through and rattled my windows.
I had to edit it out because itwas so intense.
I'm getting a little sweatyagain just talking about it.
And so, without revealing toomuch from this practice group,
since that is our container, andjust a note that the work we're
doing is energetic in natureand so there's not a lot of

(08:31):
storytelling, there's not a lotof exposition or explanation,
but the genocide was present, was named and I could tell
people were so uncomfortable Ican't even tell you all the

(08:52):
different ways that thatdiscomfort was made known.
And this book was sitting on mydesk next to me and the computer
and all of that discomfort, andI remembered and I thought, oh
my God, this is us penetrating.
We were the bodies in the body, the feelings in the feelings,

(09:16):
the mental formations in themental formations.
And there have been many othermodeled practices that we've
been doing together and this onereally did have a different
flavor.
We had to enter it in order tobe one with what we wanted to
observe and to understand, eventhough some people did not want

(09:39):
to observe and they did not wantto understand.
But that was the invitation.
And people showed up, somethingwas moved, we were moved, we
were changed by each other and Ithought, oh, even this conflict
that I have with this person orhave had, and we've talked

(10:02):
about it, and there's beenmovement inside of that
relationship, but there has beenshift that that was a gift or
an opportunity for penetrationthat we were giving this whole
group of people and we got theexperience of being able to

(10:23):
touch this were are theirrelationship to that part of the

(10:51):
world, their relationship toany aspect of this experience.
It changed me.
It moved something in me that Iam still processing and is what
I am doing here with you.
It moved something in me that Iam still processing and is what
I am doing here with you.
I don't have a lot ofexperiences like that on a
regular basis.
It's occurring to me in thismoment that I look around and

(11:15):
I'm like, yes, magic isavailable to me.
Do I forget Sometimes?
I sure do, when I remember, oh,how great.
But like, maybe penetration isalways available.
Oh God, I love that sentencethat just came out of my mouth.
That's delicious, because afterthis penetration, he overcame
all pain.
Woo, did I overcome all pain?

(11:36):
I'm not sure about that.
However, did something open up?
Did more spaciousness getcreated for us because of that
penetration, Because of thatexperience?
I believe so.
But honestly y'all, sometimesI'm scared of penetration.
Can I also just say that Ipersonally me, dana Bullocky, I

(11:57):
love how my brain works.
Does your brain work like thistoo?
You're like, oh, look at thedepths.
But also penetration jokes.
Hey, baby, are we like gonna doit?
I mean, this is a conversationof entanglement as well, and
that entanglement is honestly aninvitation to that work that we

(12:21):
were all doing together in theclass of understanding our
connection.
That's always there.
We just have to attune into it,organize ourselves towards it
and then recognize it, likeflipping our little receptor
switch on.
So here we go Magic penetration, entanglement, available pretty

(12:45):
much all the time.
Maybe they're all three thesame thing, or maybe there's a
little Venn diagram and at thecenter is magically entangled
penetration, aka nirvana, orjust humaning agentially.
And then, yes, what is happeningin Palestine is a very human

(13:07):
issue, though.
It affects the land, it affectsthe air, it affects all beings,
all matter, those of us whohave varying levels of
connection to that part of theworld, to those people in that
part of the world.
That community has expandedquite a bit.

(13:28):
We have all been changed, wehave all entered into what we
may not have wanted to observeor even understand, or had
blocks because of internalizedracism or anti-Semitism,
islamophobia, unconscious orconscious Zionism, and I could

(13:52):
see in this moment with thesepeople, when we have all come
together to practice in this way, there was a handful of us
practicing together with therest watching, but everyone was
part of it.
Or there was this dynamic ofstanding and remaining observers

(14:14):
, of being inside, of something,of entangling, of intra-acting
let's just bring Karen Baradinto this too.
That was a nice little wrap-upthat we are connected and that
connection takes a lot ofdifferent shapes and will change
over time, because we are allbecoming and the world is

(14:36):
becoming and the ways in whichwe are intertwined with each
other, and a key principle ofthe work, the example that I'm
sharing with you, that body ofwork, that course of study, what
we're all doing together ispracticing a willingness to be
changed by another, by eachother.

(14:58):
How often do we actually makethat commitment?
How often are we interested inbeing changed, and more
interested in being changed thanwe are invested in being right
and maybe willing and unwillingto penetrate, to really

(15:21):
understand?
That is our practice.
So I got that today.
I read this this morning.
I felt it so deeply, I said yes, I want to be the body in the
body, the feeling in thefeelings, the mental formations
in the mental formations.
I want to go deeper intoobservation.

(15:43):
I want to understand, intoobservation, I want to
understand.
And then I got it.
I really got it the power ofresonance.
I felt this, I said yes to this, I flipped my receptor switch
on and I got in for the ride andI feel more alive, I feel a

(16:04):
little more myself.
I feel grateful for thetenderness and the discomfort,
both all everything in between, that was shared, for the space
that was held, for the power ofthis wish of mine that I'm now
sharing with you, for mycuriosity, my willingness to be

(16:25):
changed, to be penetrated, formy practice of compassion for
myself and especially others andtheir experiences that I don't
yet understand, and gratitudealso for my own self-warmth,
which allowed me to holdtenderly the enormity of what I

(16:48):
brought to a group of relativestrangers.
I sort of just plopped it downthere.
I mean, the space held wasimmaculate by the facilitators,

(17:08):
by the facilitators, and I cameout the other side, changed and
soft and loving, and not dyingof awkwardness or shame or
whatever I could imagine mightbe a whole anxious ball of
dreadful feelings.
For being so vulnerable andbold, I'm grateful for knowing
how to take what is mine and toleave people what is theirs and

(17:30):
not grasping.
Clinging onto other people'sobvious discomfort is my
responsibility.
So go forth and wish, resonate, penetrate, entangle, love, even
in the discomfort of it all.
Love, and even in thediscomfort of it all.
We get to do this.
We get to do this together.

(17:51):
So maybe tune in to that biggerwish.
We'll remember the collectivereading from Mary Evans from a
previous episode this season, where the message of holding our
individual and collectivewishes really came to the top.

(18:13):
Find the one.
Maybe pick up a book.
Find a book that really alwayshas something for you.
Set an intention, open it up,see what guidance is there for
you.
Or you can take this one that Ishared earlier.
See how it feels.
Open yourself to it.
Doesn't have to be with 70other people, could just be with

(18:35):
a few.
Where are the orgies?
Or maybe just yourself and allthe wonderful little parts in
you waiting for some of yourprecious attention.
Magic penetration, entanglement,love.
Magic penetration, entanglement, love, magic penetration,

(18:57):
entanglement, love, magicpenetration, entanglement, love.
Where will you tune into magictoday?
Where and how will you allowyourself to be penetrated or to
be penetrating truly, reachingto understand another?
How are you already entangled?

(19:19):
Notice it, honor it, pray atthe altar?
How will you practice lovetoday?
And I mean big love, I meanexpansive love, I mean love that
also embraces the pain and thediscomfort of living, of

(19:39):
humaning together, the love thatis confronting, the love that
invites you towards change, thechange that helps you and us
become more of who we are, thelove that encourages you to
share your resources of time, energy and money with those who

(20:00):
need support right now.
Magic, penetration,entanglement, love.
