Yes, you can still get sick with COVID-19 after your first shot

Throughout the pandemic, social media has given us the closest thing many of us can imagine to an inside view of intensive care units overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. Many have been or still are fighting for their lives - whether they contracted the virus through their workplace, from a family member, or somewhere in the community.

Shots can't get into arms fast enough to quell Ontario's third wave, but they are making a difference. However, doctors are warning that a single shot is not a silver bullet. Some of the top infectious disease specialists in our province say anecdotally, they have seen patients come through their hospitals after getting their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says roughly 1.3 per cent of Canadians have contracted COVID-19 after receiving their first shot.
