SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Hey everyone, I'm
here today to chat with you guys
about how to win social media.
In the last few years, socialmedia has changed drastically.
Years ago, it was easier to gaina following, it was easier to
get likes, it was easier to makea connection, until that dang
(00:22):
algorithm got crazy.
I cannot tell you how manyartists, creatives, and people
that I know, even businessowners, that are having an
extremely challenging time withsocial media.
And I wanted to give you guystoday a few tips on how you can
master social media yourself.
(00:44):
And when I mean master...
I say that with a grain of salt.
There's no actual way to mastersocial media.
Of course, I just watched aYouTube video where this woman
mentioned that she was able tomake almost everything go viral.
So maybe people can master it.
But she also watched hundreds ofthousands of videos.
(01:08):
She ran video scripts, as wellas general copy and content
through different types of AI tolearn what was going to
potentially go viral.
Most of us don't have access tothat kind of software as well as
we do not have time for that.
Most people that I know don'teven really like social media
(01:31):
that much to care.
But if you are an artist orcreative looking to make a
living online or just reallyeven gain a following and
camaraderie among other artistsor people who like what you do,
then being on social media isunfortunately important.
And then we have the rise ofthings like threads and the
(01:55):
change of Twitter to now X.
It is an ever-moving landscapethat can be very challenging.
As many of you guys know, notonly am I a full-time career
artist, but I also run a webdesign, SEO, and digital
marketing agency.
So in my agency, we help peoplewith social media.
(02:17):
And mind you, I don't lovesocial media and I know very few
people that do.
And there are people that do,but they're few and far between.
And because I do run an agency,I think that I can give you some
pretty good tips because notonly do I do it for people in
business, I also do it formyself as an artist.
(02:39):
So I can see where things workand where things don't.
And I want you to know thateverything that you do is all
gonna be a matter of how itworks for you.
There is no formula.
If people are out there tellingyou, if you do A, B, C, D, and
E, and you follow this formula,or they try to get you to sign
(03:02):
up for a workshop or somelong-term coaching class
thingamabobber, it's probablyjust one of those things that
potentially worked for them.
No one really has cracked theexact code about how to do
something because each artist, each business, each personal
(03:28):
brand has a bunch of variables.
The demographic of people willmatter, your subject will
matter, and there are so manyother different types of
variables, as well as thedifferent types of platforms and
how they've changed.
So Twitter has a certain waythat you can interact with it
(03:51):
and the people that are on it.
Instagram is the same way.
Facebook's the same way.
LinkedIn's the same way.
They just have their own way, their own independent way.
And the platforms areever-changing, which is also
something that's extremelystressful.
So I just recently watched aYouTube where I cannot think of
(04:14):
his name.
I believe his name is Adam.
And he may be the CEO, and Ibelieve that he is.
Don't quote me.
I'm doing this improv, as youguys know, when I record these.
I do it in the moment.
But he was doing an interview onYouTube about how Instagram has
shifted.
Almost everybody that has joinedInstagram years ago went there
(04:36):
for pictures, and now it iscompletely video.
Stories and reels are one of thebiggest things on there, and a
lot of us don't want to dancearound or make videos.
It's a lot of work.
And if you like doing videos andyou find them exciting, well,
that's excellent too, but noteverybody does.
(04:57):
Not everybody wants to have todo that much engagement.
But it is the way it is.
And then he made someinteresting comment where he
said, the number one way toimprove engagement, make
connections, is through directmessaging.
Listen, when I get directmessages...
I'm often offended because mostof the time someone's trying to
(05:20):
sell me something.
Or they're trying to make me anambassador of some fake website
where they want me to wear theirgothic jewelry.
And I'm not quite sure how thatworks, but it's something to
look into to see how people useDMs on Instagram.
But if you do comment on astory...
it does go right into the DM instories number two.
(05:41):
So those could overlap.
They say that pictures are waydown and reels are even below
stories.
Stories are the things that getshared the most.
And they encourage you to donumerous of them a day.
That's a lot of work.
But I'm here to tell you notthat it's a lot of work or that,
oh, let's give a sigh of justhow much one person has to do to
(06:07):
keep a presence going, and let'stalk about ways that one can do
it without exhaustingthemselves.
Number one, do not think you'reever gonna master it.
Do not take the time to try toback end figure it out because
it's changing often and there'snever gonna be a rhythm.
(06:30):
What you need to do is try tofigure out what works for you
and your audience.
Number two, Engaging with otheraccounts.
One of the biggest things that Ihave failed at, as well as other
people, they think if they justpost online and they post really
good stuff, that people aregoing to engage with them.
And sometimes they do.
(06:50):
But really, it is a socialnetwork.
And what you need to be doing issupporting other people.
Making sure that you're goingand supporting other artists and
doing it authentically.
Don't just go around and poston...
25 posts, great, love it,beautiful, wonderful, because
that's not authentic and peopleknow that.
(07:11):
Go around and connect.
Connect with people you want toconnect with.
Connect with them because youlike what they're doing.
Tell them something genuine.
And you know what?
It may start a conversation, which then improves the
engagement on your Instagram oryour Facebook or your LinkedIn
or your Twitter.
I mean, pretty much any type ofengagement is going to improve
(07:33):
that, as well as it's also gonnabring you into the radar of
someone else.
Oh, who's this person engagingwith me?
Perhaps they might go check outyour page, your profile, or
maybe they won't think too muchabout it.
If you already have arelationship with the person,
okay, that might be different, but it's also to engage with
(07:55):
accounts that you don't haverelationships with that you
enjoy.
Engagement with others is soimportant on all social
platforms, even platforms likeYouTube.
YouTube is also a very socialplatform.
And it's common for us to think, well, if we take good photos, we
take good videos, if we post itup there, that perhaps somebody
(08:18):
might see it.
But the more that you engagewith other people, the more
you'll see their stuff And themore they engage with you, the
more that they'll see yourstuff.
So that is tip number two.
Tip number three, take it allwith a grain of salt.
I know I said that earlier, butI'm dead serious.
You may post your dinner, Iwouldn't advise that, and get
(08:42):
And then you post this piece ofart that you took 40 hours to
create and you get two.
It really just depends, and itis not representational of your
work sucks.
Sometimes it's just a fluke, andthat's just what happens.
Number four, stay consistent.
(09:05):
So here's a good example aboutconsistency.
I don't watch TV.
However, I know a lot of peoplethat do.
And if you know that yourcertain show is coming on at
Tuesday, at Tuesday, on Tuesday,at 7 p.m., and sometimes it
comes on and sometimes itdoesn't come on and you really
don't know, you are gonnacompletely not care.
(09:27):
And it's the same thing withart.
The more that you're consistent, whether or not you've decided to
post three times a week, fivetimes a week, seven times a
week, you have to make sure thatyou're consistent.
You can't just post seven days aweek And do that for two months
and then all of a sudden dropoff the planet.
Or do that for a week and thengo, well, I'm only going to do
(09:50):
one.
It's better to get into arhythm.
Okay, I'm going to make aschedule where I'm going to
create a post and I'm going todo it three times a week.
And then you would go and youwould look at your metrics and
find out when people are on.
And then maybe work yourschedule around that.
Think about the times thatpeople are on.
But consistency is reallyimportant.
(10:13):
Showing that you're engaging, showing that you're showing up,
showing that you're there.
Nobody likes inconsistency.
It's not fun.
Nothing feels good when it'sinconsistent.
It's confusing and people oftenmove away from that.
I mean, if you had a friend whoevery time you went out, they
came to pick you up, butsometimes they showed up and
(10:34):
sometimes they didn't, youprobably wouldn't engage with
them very much because they'renot reliable.
Being consistent createsreliability.
Being consistent also puts youin people's faces more often,
which then they're more apt tolook for you or recognize you.
And lastly, be thoughtful inwhat you post and what you
share.
It's better to share things twopieces of content that are
(10:59):
really thoughtful and have goodcaptions and that have decent
pictures or the video was donewell than to put out seven
things that are subpar.
It's more important to put outquality content and to take your
time with the content.
If you're just trying to throwit out there, it's not really
(11:22):
going to work.
But if you are thoughtful aboutyour captions, you think about
your hashtags, you maybe evenadd an alt description, let's
say on Instagram, you can dothat on YouTube as well, then
you are going to potentially hitaudiences that you might not
have hit, as well as you canthink about for SEO, which is
(11:46):
search engine optimization, which also happens with social
media.
is that you can put yourlocation.
And I had started putting mylocation about three months ago,
and I've definitely connectedwith people in my local area.
I just moved here.
So for me, it was a really greatway to find and connect with
(12:07):
other people.
So your location is also a greatthing.
But overall, be thoughtful withyour content.
Be consistent.
with your content.
Don't have extreme expectationsand feel awful when you're not
gaining anything.
Just remember that over time, ifyou do some of these things I
(12:29):
suggested, they can help you.
Are they going to blow up youraccount and make you go viral?
No.
And anybody that promises youthat is just lying.
There's just no formula forthat.
The formula like anything tosucceed in is hard work,
consistency, and don't forget, the most important thing is to
(12:51):
believe in yourself.
Even if you don't get likes, even if you do not feel the
community supporting you, alwaysbelieve in yourself because you
are very important no matter ifyou get likes or not, and your
art and creativity matters inthis world.
