Let us know what you think!

Andy and James close out the year with a Christmas cracker of an episode covering everything from the recent bombshell news of Porsche's financial problems to mods, maintenance, Andy's recent Alpine Range Rally #12 road tour and James' recent tours of the Black Hills and the Smoky Mountains. James talks about the conclusion of his 991's sports exhaust modifications while Andy talks about the most recent bits that have fallen off his 964. Andy's giving his keys to teenage drivers (you do NOT want to miss this segment) and naturally there is a stunning video of the week to round things out. SPEAKER_02 (00:06):
Andy Gaunt, mate.
It's so good to see you.
Look at that shining smilingface.

SPEAKER_00 (00:11):
Dude, my man, literally, it's it's like I
don't recognize you.
And I I I do you know what?
I've got to put my glasses on.
That's how long it's been.
I'm that old now that I neededglasses.
I'm late because I was on myZima frame getting down the
hallway.
It it's I mean it's been aminute.

SPEAKER_02 (00:28):
For me, I needed to sort of remind myself how to put
the equipment together.
I was like, wait a minute, wheream I gonna face are we gonna
FaceTime on a phone and recordon the mic?
Like, how did how do I plug mymic in?

SPEAKER_00 (00:40):
What what was the last text message I sent you?

SPEAKER_02 (00:44):
Exactly that.
Where do I plug my mic in?

SPEAKER_00 (00:46):
I said, the fuck do I set up a microphone?

SPEAKER_02 (00:50):
Yeah, so it's been since uh I think April was our
last one.
And we April.
We came close to recording inthe summer, we came close to
recording in the fall, we havenot come close to recording in
the last couple of months, but Ithought we have gotta get one in
for the end of this year, andyou can tell how excited I've
been because I know this is yourfavorite.
I've tagged you in approximately50 different photos of Porsche

(01:13):
911s with a Christmas tree ontop, and on that note, welcome
to Curban Canyon.

SPEAKER_00 (01:36):
Perfect cold intro.

SPEAKER_02 (01:38):
Oh, I love it.
You know, so as I was taggingyou in all of those um uh posts
with you know porches withChristmas trees on, I like was
getting steadily how did you sayit?
Like more and more excited, andmore and more just I couldn't
stop laughing.
And Ruthie was sat next to me onthe couch, she's like,
seriously, what are you doing?
What are you doing?

SPEAKER_00 (01:57):
Yeah, no, no one can appreciate this apart from
Randy.
What you you sound like so myfriend Kale uh has finally
discovered AI, and so for thelast 48 hours, he has just been
taking every photo that's everbeen taken of any one of our
friends on any drive and makingit do crazy shit like dance and

(02:18):
all this sort of stuff.
And I'm like, okay, well, goodto know the um the AI bots now
have every one of my friends asuh as avatars they can use for
deep fakes and uh kidnappings.
You know what?

SPEAKER_02 (02:30):
Well, okay, I haven't gone quite that far, but
um when we did Tale of theDragon this summer, uh I think
it was Tale of the Dragon, wheremy friend Mark, who goes with us
all of his time, who and him andhis son, um, he got me onto Chat
GBT and got me onto AI.
And since that time, I've becomelike an AI professional.
And I've done the summer.

(02:50):
I'm I'm I'm all over it.
However, I use it for good.
I use it for good.
My mate Chris, catman Chris, with his 11 cats and his GT3
touring.

SPEAKER_00 (03:01):
Hold on, hold on, hold on.
How many cats does he actuallyhave?

SPEAKER_02 (03:04):
10.
But I always get it wrong andsay 11.
Dude, we'll come back to that ina second.
It's 10 cats.
We'll we'll come back to that ina second.

SPEAKER_00 (03:10):
Oh man.

SPEAKER_02 (03:11):
Chris, we need to talk.
I know, like anyway, we'll comeback to that in a second.
But he's using AI a little bitfor good, but you know, every
couple of days, you can bepretty much guaranteed there'll
be some kind of comedy AI photoinvolving, I don't know, Jay
Reed's head and you know,something that I won't repeat,
or you know, hey, I'm gonna putmy car on the moon.

(03:32):
I'm gonna put my car wherever itis.
So anyway, there we are.
But yeah, but you know what?

SPEAKER_00 (03:37):
When the Terminators come for us, Chris, they'll
they'll they'll say, Chris, comeon in, mate, you're cool.

SPEAKER_02 (03:43):
Bring it catch.
Dude, I saw a meme the other daywith somebody walking past a
terminator, and the caption was,Oh, he's fine.
We're gonna let him off.
He says thank you.

SPEAKER_00 (03:54):
Like, do you ever say some back to I say thank
you?
Which apparently kills a hectareof Brazilian rainforest every
time I say please and thank you.
Yeah, but when Skynet rises, they'll let us off.

SPEAKER_02 (04:07):
Yeah, that's the point ones.

SPEAKER_00 (04:09):
Yeah, Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_02 (04:10):
Well, dude, so look, we're here to talk about
Porsche, right?

SPEAKER_00 (04:13):
We are because I don't want to I don't want to
sit here having a doomerconversation about about AI.
And and actually, so I was I wassitting there in bed and I was
thinking, okay, what typicallyhappens when we've not recorded
for a while?
Because you do get into arhythm, right?

SPEAKER_02 (04:27):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (04:28):
And so I want to apologize up front if James and
I talk over each other.
That's the one thing I alwaysfind when we haven't done it for
a while.
We always talk over each other.
Whereas when we've been doing ita lot, we're very, I don't want
to say professional, I thinkthat's I think that's over the
top.
I mean, do you know what?
I gotta I I gotta be honest.
I um when you did the Welcome toKirban Canyon, I was like, oh

(04:51):
thank God he thought of that.
I'd forgotten we even do it.
But the other thing we I knowthe other thing we usually do is
have you've is have show notes, which I usually meticulously
prepare.
And yesterday we went about thata little differently, didn't we?

SPEAKER_02 (05:07):
We did, we exchanged a few text messages, and uh to
be honest, I was actuallyexpecting you to pull a very
nice professional copy of shownotes out of your ass overnight,
but nothing, nothing.

SPEAKER_00 (05:18):
No, no, I've got the first one I can see in my text
message chain is Porsche FilesChapter 11.

SPEAKER_02 (05:26):
I know, right?
I mean, so you know, yeah, there's stuff to talk about with
Porsche itself and what on earthis happening in Stuttgart.
Um, you've done what now, um,your Alpine drive 12 times?

SPEAKER_00 (05:38):
12.
Just did it last weekend.

SPEAKER_02 (05:40):
12.

SPEAKER_00 (05:40):
Yeah, and you've done a Tale of the Dragon trip.
I've done Tale of the Dragon.

SPEAKER_02 (05:44):
I think I think I've even done Black Hills since our
last podcast.
I think that went out justbefore we went to the Black
Hills.
That was a great trip.

SPEAKER_00 (05:52):
So so we're gonna talk about those trips.
We're gonna talk about wherewhat's happening with your car.
I just saw images, excuse me,images of it on uh Instagram or
Facebook even yesterday andthought, damn, that's looking
good.
We'll talk about the 964 and thebits that broke.
We'll talk about who I let drivemy 964.
That look let's hold that tillthe end.

(06:12):
I mean, holy shit, what amoment.

SPEAKER_02 (06:15):
Uh-huh.
Yep.
Ooh, terrible.
Well, we'll definitely talkabout that.
And um, if we had show notes,I'd probably be able to try and
figure out what video of theweek is.
But I'm I'm gonna hope thatyou're gonna pull that out of
the bag.

SPEAKER_00 (06:27):
I got it.
Don't you worry about that, myfriend.
Don't you worry about that.
So let's why don't we start withtalking about the drives?
Because we've both had some epicones.
Tell me about the Black Hills.
So the Black Hills.
Hold up.
Are you drinking Red Bull?

SPEAKER_02 (06:41):
No, no, no.

SPEAKER_00 (06:42):
Um, Max was serpent.

SPEAKER_02 (06:46):
I've um I've stolen one of my wife's lemon-flavoured
spindrifts.
Do you have this in Australia?
It's like a sparkling water, andI thought it I I almost went for
the big gulp.
I know how much you appreciatethe big gulp, but this is all I
could get in the time I have.
Alright, well, that's great.
That's good.
Well, so the Black Hills, inmany respects, it was it was

(07:07):
like an absolutely fantastictrip.
In other respects, it was alittle bit disastrous because um
we we took off um right asspring was uh ending.
Well, where were we?
No, we're kind of like springwas a few weeks in.
We're just just winter wasending, spring was a few weeks
in.
In the Twin Cities, all the snowand ice has melted.

(07:29):
Now we're we weren't going asfar as the Rocky Mountains where
there is definitely snow, Imean, even all the way up until
June.
Um, but we were kind of sort ofright on the cusp.
I took my winter tires off, putthe summers on, it was nice and
warm.
Um, one thing that happened, wegot snowed in on one day.
So we're all there with oursummer tires, and we had three
days in the hills, and one ofthem was just spent dicking
around in the cabin because wecouldn't leave.

(07:51):
Um, but but on the way there, mymate Patrick, who's got this uh
beautiful silver firstgeneration 997, he's also the
guy that worked on uh Project996 with me um on with Bluey.
Uh he hasn't been to Tale of theDragon in a couple of years,
he's been really busy with hisbusiness.
Um, and this was a lot closer.
You know, it's only like aneight-hour trip to get to the

(08:12):
Black Hills and Mount Rushmoreand all that than like a two-day
trip to get to the tail.
Patrick was like, I'm in, I'vegot the car out of the cover,
I'm ready, you know, I've donemaintenance.
We didn't even make it to theBlack Hills, and uh his um
serpentine belt came off the theuh what are they called?
What are they called?
The cogs, the um the spinnies.

SPEAKER_00 (08:33):
The spinnies that's it, it's the spinnies.
I I recently called my Porschedealer, hey, I need to order a
new spinny for my uh a spinnydoobry.

SPEAKER_02 (08:44):
So we we had to pull over and it was pissing rain the
whole way there.
So it was it was a pretty toughtrip.
Patrick pulls over, MichaelWooten, who's um uh Michael's
motorer meets Michael Wootenfrom YouTube.
He pulled over to tell Patrick.
We got the serpentile uh thebelt back on.
Another 20 minutes down theroad, something had gone wrong
where the belt had essentiallymelted onto the four or five

(09:06):
pulleys.
There you go, pulleys.
Um, and so that was it.
Patrick was out.
We had to push his car off theroad to an ab like it was and
this is the middle of nowhere, this is South Dakota.
There is not a lot in SouthDakota at all.
Uh so we pushed him off just offthis junction outside an
abandoned uh motel.

(09:28):
An abandoned motel is like theonly thing there.
Left his Porsche on the side ofthe road, drove another four or
five hours to get to the BlackHills.
He spent the whole of the nextday trying to figure out how to
get his car home.
So Patrick kind of had a bit ofa rough ride and a and a you
know um an unfortunate time.
The rest of us did some amazingdriving.
We saw Count Rushmore, we sawMount Rushmore with some great

(09:50):
uh you know, great mountainruns.
Um, thankfully, everyone elsedid okay with their cars.
We got a little bit snowed in.
Um, but to top it off, Luke andAdam came with me.
Uh I wanted at least one of themto come, but they both came and
they did so well in the car, andwe talked about cars, and you
know, they they were askingquestions.
It was like a really, reallyfulfilling trip that way.

(10:12):
But I think of all the all thetrips we've done in the last few
years, um in many ways this wasmore spectacular than the smoky
mountains.
I mean, it's a differentmountain, different mountain
range, so you know, differentclimate, but it was just nice to
do something different, I think.

SPEAKER_00 (10:28):
Yeah, massive.
And and did uh did the silver997 make it back home, or is it
up on blocks somewhere?

SPEAKER_02 (10:35):
No, it made it home.
Uh, we found a guy uh who'sactually connected to our
Porsches and Pancakes group whohappened to be out in the Black
Hills um and had a trailer withhim.
And he was gonna be going backto help his daughter move to
college.
Uh, so we managed to finanglePatrick getting up on this uh
enclosed trailer, got it home.

(10:57):
Poor guy.
Just I feel so bad for him.
Got it all fixed, and he managedto fix it all himself.
But yeah, I imagine that'spretty gussing.

SPEAKER_00 (11:04):
It's always it's always pulley wheels.
That happened that that happenedon Alpine Range Rally three, I
think it was.
Our friend Trev with his withhis boxer.
I mean, thankfully it was on thelast day of the rally and we
were we were almost home, butthis pulley wheel came off.
And so we spent four hours inthis tiny little town at the

(11:26):
only mechanic for a millionmiles.
We just happened to be able topull in there trying to fix this
thing, and it it was not able tobe done.
So Rocco uh Rocco, Trev had toleave the car with um Gino,
Gino's mechanic shop, and pickit up a few weeks later on a
trailer.
So, yeah, it's always a pulleywheel.

SPEAKER_02 (11:46):
Well, you know, so it's funny you mention uh Rocco
because I I'm really excited tohear about the adventures of
Andy on the Alpine Ridge Rally12 with Choco and Blocco and
Rocco and Flocco and and allyour mates with your kangaroos
and your didgeridoos.
It's been a while, and andPhilby and and who else?

(12:07):
Who am I missing?
There's someone I'm missing.

SPEAKER_00 (12:10):
You're such a knob.
Well, we did so yeah, this timelast week, yeah, this time last
week, I was leading the group onone of the most biblically wet
uh sections of run I think we'veever done.
So Classic Alpine Range Rally,we met on the Friday morning as

(12:32):
we always do.
Friday we had sunshine all day,so it was stunning.
And look, the good the goodthing about the rally now is
that the maps are pretty muchcut and paste.
I've really just kept refining, refining, refining, and I think
I've managed now to just squeezeevery last bit of juice out of

(12:52):
the fruit in terms of puttingthe twisties in.
We did um on day one, we didactually take a detour to a
little town called Walhalla, which that road is quite short,
but super cool.
And it used to, we used to do itin the rally, but I'd always
felt it was too much with a withone of the second um detours
that we do.
But actually, it worked reallywell.

(13:14):
So day one was just intense andit was 24 degrees Celsius.
I don't know what that is inFahrenheit.
Um who cares?
I'm still a Celsius guy.
I don't know, jeans and t-shirtweather.
Um and and we just had thisincredible, incredible run,
perfect weather, and the bestthing is we stay in this little

(13:35):
coastal town called LakeSentrance, and the last part of
the day, there's a bit of a uhlet's call it a transport stage,
right?
I think it's like an hour to getfrom the twisties to Lake
Sentrance.
But just before you get to LakeSentrance, you turn off, and
there is this one little twistyrun that happens.
It only goes for, I don't know,maybe 10 minutes, but it's just

(13:59):
and you pop out of this twistyroad and you're in Lake
Sentrance, and it is the bestway to finish the that first day
of rallying, just phenomenal.
So yeah, day one, amazing.
Day two, we wake up, we roll outof Lake Sentrance at seven
o'clock, I'm in front, and it isbucketing, and and by the time
we pull out of town, it it'scats and dogs.

(14:21):
Cats and dogs.
So everyone always, wheneverit's raining, everyone always
wants me to lead because I'm ina Carrera Fall.
Um and actually, I've got to saythe the recalcitrance of this
group, we had 16 people, thewillingness of people to drive
at the front, it's verydisappointing.

(14:42):
I'll use this forum to say itbecause none of them are in
front of me, but but it was likeconstantly, who wants to go up
front?
Okay, I guess I'll go.
And then and then if it's andthen and then there's uh Simon
goes up front a lot.
He's the only other air-cooleduh oh no, there was Phil being
air cooled as well.
But Simon goes up the front alot too, and then Trev goes up

(15:02):
the front, and so does Daz.
And Trev and Daz.
The reason nobody wants to go upthe front is because if you're
in front of Trev or Daz, itfeels like you're just gonna be
holding them up.
So yeah.
So the reason for that is Trevhas a he has a 996 GT3 that

(15:23):
competed in, I think it gotsecond outright in the Target
Tasmania back in the day.
It was driven by a verywell-known Australian uh racing
driver named Tony Quinn, and itused to race in Nations Cup
against Ferraris and all sortsof stuff.
And Trev is a pretty handysteerer too.
So if Trev's behind you, youknow all about it.

(15:45):
Um, Daz drives a 944, so you'dbe like, okay, well, we've got
that covered.
Uh-uh.
Daz could be driving a combi vanand he would prefer that
everyone.
He's just yeah, he's just thatguy.
Yeah, yeah, just that guy.
So anyway, so we we roll out ofLakes Entrance.
I've got Trev behind me, and itis bucketing.
And the one thing that was in myfavour was my car's all-wheel

(16:08):
drive, and I'm on PS4S's.
I think Trev was on uh some somerather used semi-slick tires, so
but somehow he's still he wasstill uh still right behind me
all the way.
So that was great.
And we get to a little towncalled Omi, I have breakfast,
and then we drive to this towncalled Midamita, and the road to
Midamida is just incredible.

(16:29):
At first, it's super tight andtechnical, really great for the
little air-cooled cars, I gottasay, and then it kind of opens
up and it undulates and you youclimb for a while, and then it's
down, and it's it's 60kilometers of twisties.
Oh, nice, and and intense, intense twisties.
You get to the end, and thistown is this tiny little village

(16:51):
with this amazing pub, and soyou just have lunch, and then
you go and you do it all again, you do it in reverse, and doing
it in reverse was one of theabsolute highlights.
I had I had this group behindme, and it was funny.
Simon was behind me, he's gotthis hot-rotted 911 SC, and that
thing's quick, and he's veryquick.
And then we had Kale behind himuh in his 718 GT4.

(17:17):
And I I thought, you know, I wasdoing a pretty good job with the
pace, and and we get to onesection and Kale jumps past me.
We there was a there was someroad work being done, so he had
to stop for this meteringtraffic light.
So we stop at this red light,Kale comes in front of me, and I
thought, okay, fair enough.
I thought I was going prettyquick, but that's okay.
Well, he takes off when we getthe green light, and and I'm

(17:40):
sticking with him, but we'reclimbing up hills, right?
And so I am beating the absolutecrap out of Liv Little Green,
you know, coming out of tighthairpins in second gear, just
red line, red line, red line.
And of course, Kale's got thisfour-litre GT4, so the torque he
just pulls away.

(18:01):
Yeah, but um anyway, so then Ihad I did have the opportunity,
it was all dry at this point, bythe way.
And then I had the opportunityto actually swap cars with Kale
and drive that uh four-litreGT4, and I was shocked by what a
difference there was betweenthat and my 981 GT4.

(18:21):
Just oh man, the torque on thisthing, just phenomenal,
absolutely phenomenal.
I I fair to say I was looking atcar sales for seven GT4 a week.
Um and then yeah, you know what?
I think we we rolled into townaround 4 30, having done

(18:41):
something like 500ks that day,and I mean a straight roads that
day would have been uh half anhour of driving.
Yeah, yeah, seriously, and andthen and then Sunday uh it
rained a lot of Sunday, but whatwas really cool actually was
that there's on Sunday, there'sreally only three key twisties

(19:04):
that we hit on the way home, andwhat would happen was you'd
drive those twisties, it wouldbe dry, and then it would bucket
rain as you were driving to thenext one, and then by the time
you got to the next one, and itall dried up again.
So we had an incredible run.
But I don't know if you saw onmy Instagram, my mate Erwin.
Erwin has a 991.2 GTS, lovelycar.

(19:29):
And the day before the rally, hecalled me, he's like, Hey, I've
I've I've ripped my tire.
I've I've I need a PS4S, and Isaid, Listen, give these guys a
call, you should be able to getone.
So he was able to, amazingly, because they're always pretty
difficult to get.
So he just was able to get a newtire, so it was all great, and
then on the last day, we're onthe radio, and or we're sorry,

(19:51):
we're driving the last road, andsuddenly Irwin comes on the
radio.
He says, I think I've got aflat.
And then your mate Philby.
Then your mate Philby comes.
Gets on the radio and goes, bloody hell, Irwin's got a
bloody stick sticking out of histire.
No way.
I don't know why I just madePhilby sound like Steve Irwin,
because he could not sound lesslike Steve Irwin if he tried.

(20:12):
Sorry, Philby.
But uh but anyway, so he hadthis stick.
It literally looked like I don'tknow, you know, at the start of
Raiders of the Lost Ark whenhe's running and they're all
chasing him with the balls andit looks like someone had done
that in the side of his in theside of his tyre.
How this stick had managed topuncture and be left sticking
out of this pilot sport 4S tyre,I I I'll never know.

(20:35):
And of course, it's a GTS, soit's on Centerlocks, right?

SPEAKER_02 (20:39):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (20:40):
So it's like, oh my god, what are we gonna do?
So Fraz, our boy Fraz, Rocco,Fraz, Philby.

SPEAKER_02 (20:47):
Um, Fraz rolls up.
Fraz Fraz and Daz, please tellme they're brothers.

SPEAKER_00 (20:52):
They're not brothers.
Uh they're not, but it's amissed opportunity.
Do you know what though?
They're both pretty handy.
Um, so so Fraz rolls up withthis puncture repair kit, and
I'm looking at it thinking, heyFraz, I I I think this might be
a little bit beyond saidpuncture repair kit.
And then so he starts he startspulling the he starts pulling

(21:13):
the the stick out of the tire, and Philby says, What are you
doing?
It's gonna let all the air out,and it's like well, you you
can't drive it with the stickin, mate.
So Fraz pulls this stick out.
The tire does indeed deflate.
So then Fraz has got this tirerepair kit.
I don't know if you've ever seenthese things, they're basically
like little rubber noodles, andthen you have like an

(21:35):
old-fashioned corkscrew, and youjust jam the noodles into the
hole and then use uh and then wehad we had an air Irwin had an
air compressor, use a razorblade to slice them off and
clean them up, fix, sorted.
Yeah, Irwin was able to drivehome, no problem.
I think he stopped a few timesto check it was okay, but what

(21:57):
an I I just said that isincredible.
I'm buying one of those kitsthis weekend to have in my car
for when I do a rally.
Unbelievable, lifesaver,lifesaver.

SPEAKER_02 (22:07):
Well, look, you all sound like Steve Irvin to us
over here, to be honest withyou.
Um so you didn't need to youdidn't need to apologise for us
for Phil.

SPEAKER_00 (22:15):
Well, Phil Philby, Philby lives in a in a in a
place called Brighton, which isBrighton, which is sort of known
as one of the more he-toitysuburbs of Melbourne.
So he he probably does not soundhe doesn't sound a lot like uh
Steve Irwin, I've got to say,but I tell you this, and I'm
sure I've said it before, I'vehad so many conversations this
week about doing these trips andhow important they are, and that

(22:40):
the driving's incredible andexperiencing the cars is
phenomenal.
That's that's brilliant.
That kind of goes withoutsaying.
It's the it's the conversations,it's I don't want to sound I
don't want to wax too lyrical, but the connection, all that
stuff.
You end up talking about mentalhealth and all work challenges,
life challenges, all these otherthings, right?

(23:00):
And and there's so much value init.
It's it's yeah, yeah, it wasjust awesome, absolutely
awesome.

SPEAKER_02 (23:05):
No, I I totally agree, and uh, you know, in in
some respects, perfect segue toTale of the Dragon, because I
think this last trip to the talewas was maybe my favorite.
I mean, and it and it was Idon't really remember too much
about the driving, frankly, which is not to say we didn't
have a good time because we did,um, but the memories are really
around, you know, just likelaughing and having like really

(23:29):
silly talks and really deepconversations and a few beers
and some barbecue.
I mean, Michael was there andJay and Chris, and um there's uh
a newcomer to our group who wemet um a couple of years ago at
Amelia Island, uh Christian, umwho's got he's got this modded
out uh 991.1 uh sorry, uh 991.2.

(23:50):
Um it's black, it's got like youknow the full end-to-end soul,
it's got the stage two tune,it's got the inner coolers, it's
putting out like 700 andsomething horses, it's insane.
And he's also just got himself auh a green 992, which is put the
which is also modded out exactlythe way and such a nice guy.
And Mark is there, of course, and you know, Richie and so I,

(24:13):
you know, obviously gonna beforgetting a few people, but
there's so much to be said aboutthe friends you take on those
kind of trips and just thePorsche community in general.
We've talked about that before.
It's it's a really amazingplace.
Um, but you know, you said therewere what about 16 people?
Is that a pretty big group forRaoul Pine Range Rally?
Because you you try and controlthat, don't you?

SPEAKER_00 (24:35):
Yeah, I do.
So we got the the the group sizeis there's there's 20 people
that that are invited.
Um and and obviously look, people reach out to me all the
time and say, hey, can I come?
Which is um completely fair.
I I certainly understand thatpeople would want to attend.
It it's weird though, becauseit's not a club where you know
we're actually we're we're nowjust a group of mates, and um

(24:59):
those 20 who have been comingfor a long time, I I just always
want to keep it open for them, but that's the most we could do.
And so, yeah, the last couplehave been a little smaller,
people have had life challengesor you know, kids, or all the
sorts of stuff that gets in theway.
Um, so it's rare that we geteverybody along.
But yeah, 16 was definitely oneof the bigger groups we've had

(25:20):
for a minute.
My mate Gerard he'd had uhsurgery on his foot two weeks
earlier, so he couldn't drive,and he's got a uh manual 991 uh
two Career T.
So we were really worried thathe wasn't going to be able to
make it, but then he borrowed afriend.
This friend of his, what a greatfriend, just lent him a 997.2

(25:42):
PDK.
So he was able to do it in that, although it was hilarious
because he he rolled up on dayone, stunning white 997, it was
gorgeous.
But all weekend, everyone wassaying that car needs springs
and spaces, like it was fullfull stock ride high.
And then Gerard's like, you wantto drive it, it needs an exhaust
because that's yeah, it didn'teven have the sports, uh, the

(26:05):
Porsche Sports exhaust.
But um, but yeah, that was itwas a it was a bigger group, but
you know what?
Because we've all been drivingtogether so long now, and I
don't know if you find this, youkind of know how everybody
drives, and you know, based onyour own mood, where you want to
sit in the group at any giventime.
You might think, Yeah, I justwant to cruise a little bit, I

(26:26):
might sit around with thisperson, or I'm happy to kind of
push on a little bit, I might gobehind them or in front of them.
Do you know what I mean?
You sort of get that rhythm.

SPEAKER_02 (26:34):
Yeah, yeah, definitely, definitely.
It's the same same with us.
We know who likes to drive fast,we know who uh is gonna take up
a lot of time and needs to sitat the back and everything in
between, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (26:44):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think um it's funny that onetoo, isn't it?
Because the people we know liketo drive fast, as you say.
I've never asked them this, butyou know, it's probably almost
that thing where they like todrive fast, but it doesn't mean
they need to every time.
And they're probably also quitehappy sitting behind someone

(27:05):
else who's maybe going slightlyslower than they would typically
go, just in order to be able tolook at three or four cars in
front of them.
Because that's one thing I findif I'm leading a little bit,
it's like sometimes I missactually seeing that snake of
cars in front of me and chasingsomeone else.

SPEAKER_02 (27:21):
Definitely, yeah.
This time, uh, not in uh BlackHills, but Tale of the Dragon, I
did try and hang back at theback this time because often I'm
the one that leads a lot of thetime, and it's it's partly
because um I'm I'm I wouldn'tsay I'm impatient, but I'm the
one that look at you, you'retailgating people.

SPEAKER_00 (27:43):
Unbelievable, you're that guy.

SPEAKER_02 (27:44):
No, no, no, the proctology is not that.
It's like when we stop and takea break and take a photo, yeah.
I'm the guy who's like, okay,everybody's taking a photo,
let's let's go get in the car,I'll turn the engine on, as
opposed to the guys that willjust happily sit there and chat,
and all of a sudden you've lostan hour.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
We've been we've been here 10minutes.
I'm gonna get in, I'm gonnastart revving, and I'm just

(28:05):
gonna pull off.
And if people want to follow me,they can.

SPEAKER_00 (28:09):
See, see, PJ who organizes our uh our Tasmania
rallies, he's a little bit likethat.
Suddenly you'll turn around andhe's just driving off.
Like, all right, I guess we'regoing.
But but do you know what though?
I think there is that thing of Idon't know, tell me if this is
your feeling.
You kind of manage the itineraryand the routes, right?
So it's like yeah, you'rekeeping an eye on, hey, we've

(28:31):
got to get to here by this time,so we do actually need to keep
moving.

SPEAKER_02 (28:35):
Yeah, yeah, that's right.
Yeah, we've got to make it tolunch, we've got to get back
again, we're gonna, you know, dosomething this evening.
Yeah, I'm I'm off on on theitinerary.

SPEAKER_00 (28:43):
Do you know?
I always take a good deal ofpride in the fact that I I I
break the itinerary downeffectively enough so that I can
book I can book lunch at thispub at 12.30, knowing we'll roll
into town pretty much bang on orthereabouts that time.
And you know, once once or twicewe've had problems where

(29:04):
someone's had a car issue orsomething and we're late, but
we're we're pretty consistentlygood.
But on the Saturday on thistrip, because it was raining,
the places we would usuallystop, there are there are two
stops that we would typicallymake in the morning, and you
think, oh yeah, they're justit's just a five-minute stop,
right?
But it's not, it's actually halfan hour by the time everyone

(29:24):
walks around, has a chat, goesand waters some plants, and then
comes back and jumps in theircars.
And so we rolled into this townMidamidda, where I had a 12:30
booking for lunch.
We rolled in at 11 o'clock, andeveryone and everyone's like,
What are we gonna do?
And it's like, I don't know,it's well, we didn't talk on the
side of the road because it waspissing rain.

(29:44):
Let's just talk here.
And actually, thankfully, the umuh the publican came out and he
said, Well, we opened at 11:30,so we had a nice early lunch.

SPEAKER_02 (29:53):
That's nice.
Hey, look, so this might be asilly question, but given that
it rains a lot when you guys dothese trips, have you not
thought about doing it in adifferent season?
And like, we're gonna do thistrip, we're gonna book it in in
monsoon season.
You know what?
It rained.
Shit, yeah, I didn't think aboutthat.
I mean, you guys have got thesummers that are like, you know,

(30:16):
40 degrees, ball sweatingly hot.
Come on, Andy.

SPEAKER_00 (30:20):
Yeah, so Rocco and I have had this conversation so
many times, man.
And so the the problem is, ifyou do it at towards the back
end of the year, once you're outof November, so so December is
the big the first week ofsummer, right?
But if you if you wait intoDecember, people have got

(30:40):
Christmas things happening, itjust becomes harder and harder
to to manage.
So you go as late as you can.
And to be honest, when we didthis rally this time last year,
number 10, it was like 35degrees every day.
It was it was hot as balls forthe whole rally, and then you
know, the other one is we we doone in March or April, and when

(31:06):
we did it at the start of thisyear, it was great.
We had incredible weather.
Next year we're doing um we'llprobably alternate and go back
to Tasmania.
So yeah, you're right.
It's Melbourne in late springcan just be dire, but December's
too late, and early spring's notpossible, and then winter's
definitely not possible.

(31:27):
So you take a punt, and yeah, II agree.

SPEAKER_02 (31:31):
I told you it was gonna be a silly question.
I mean, you've done it 12 times,so you've obviously thought
about that before.

SPEAKER_00 (31:36):
And we've had we have had good weather, I think
we've but not much, like it hasbeen mostly, mostly pretty wet.
I would say for nine out of thetwelve, it's we've had and not
just wet, like wet, like justyeah dude.

(31:58):
We're driving this road on theSaturday morning, and and I was
at the front, and there are afew there were a few times I had
to get on the radio and say thethis left hand is like super
slippery.
So I suppose the thing about uhdoing that is you you have to
have the right wheels andspecifically the right tyres,
and you've just changed thewheels over on your 991.

SPEAKER_02 (32:19):
I have.
I've gone back to my uh mywinter setup, which is the uh
the Carrera S rims that thatcame with the car.
And so I've I've got three setsof of rims.

SPEAKER_00 (32:30):
Three sets?

SPEAKER_02 (32:31):
Yeah, so the Carrera S rims came with it.
I wanted to get a second setbecause uh of the winter summer
changeover.
Just to make it just to make iteasier.
So I got the RS spider rims, uh,which I do really like.
I do really like.
Uh, and then of course I gotsome sole performance rims last
year, um, which I also used forfor winter rims.
Um, but as much as I love thesole rims and I really love the

(32:53):
the spider rims, every time I goback to what I consider in my
mind just the boring basicCarrera rims, I put them on the
car and I I stand back and Ithink, shit, they look so good.

SPEAKER_00 (33:03):
I like how they look, they really look good.
I I'm I mean I messaged you, wasit yesterday?
Because I'd seen your Facebookpost, and I just thought, it
looks so good.
Silver wheels, just and yeah,Carrera S wheels, just a really,
really good look.
Really good look.

SPEAKER_02 (33:20):
You know, I've got to give you credit because I
thought the first thing you weregonna comment on was my factory
ride heights, which I stillhaven't addressed.
I've done all these mods to thiscar, and I bought those lowering
springs what two years ago, andthey're still sitting in a box
in my garage.
And every time I walk into mygarage, I think of you because I
see that gap, and I'm like, yeah, Andy wouldn't like that.

(33:41):
Andy'll comment on that.

SPEAKER_00 (33:43):
What what what's the blockage?
How do we what what's going onhere psychologically?
How do we address this?

SPEAKER_02 (33:49):
It's it's it's a job I've just never attempted
before, you know, and it's andbecause it's so core to the
functioning of the car, I'mreally worried about just
screwing it up.
Like if you screw up an oilchange, like what's the worst
that can happen?
You have to pour more oil in,you have to get yourself a new
um you know, new filter if youdon't put it in properly, or if

(34:10):
you torque the drain plug, um,or changing an air filter.
Um even taking off the rearbumper, if I was to screw up the
rear bumper, I could still driveit to the garage and get it
fixed.
But if I was to screw up any oneof those um suspension struts,
it's just that, you know, that'sa tow truck that's got to be
involved, or that's a that's athousand dollar mistake, it's

(34:32):
not a hundred dollar mistake.

SPEAKER_00 (34:34):
So that is it a thousand dollar mistake though.

SPEAKER_02 (34:37):
I don't I don't know.
I'm just like it's it's I'mforever procrastinating.
But but you know, it's like umit's like doing the
intercoolers.
I wanted to do the intercoolerson my car, um, and it wasn't
until I just recently did themon a 991.2 GTS in lava orange,
and my friend Derek, oh my god, that car is dreaming so so

(34:59):
dreamy.
Um, really well-optioned car.
But now I've done it on his carand I've done it on another car.
Like, that doesn't bother me.
I could just rock up, you know,in my pajamas and yeah, I'll do
your intercoolers, no worries.
But the struts.
Did I say pajamas?
I meant a barat manchini.

(35:19):
That's that's what I sleep in.
Um but like yeah, I think I justI'm just procrastinating.
And I've watched that Tommy L.
Garage video.

SPEAKER_00 (35:28):
Tommy's video shows it really well.

SPEAKER_02 (35:31):
Look, Tom yeah, I know, but yeah, I know.
I know.

SPEAKER_00 (35:35):
Just take it to a garage, just have them do it.

SPEAKER_02 (35:38):
No, I'm not letting someone do the I'm gonna do it.
I'm gonna do it.

SPEAKER_00 (35:44):
Are you though?
Uh come on.
I will I know it's off-brand foryou, but why don't you just do
it?
It'll cost you like 400 bucks.

SPEAKER_02 (35:52):
But you know, it's maybe it's maybe it's a winter
project.
It was gonna be the winterproject.
In fact, I know I'm gonna blameJohn Gados at soul performance
because that was gonna be awinter project last year.
And at the beginning of winter, that's when John called me up
and was like, Hey, do you fancydoing some installs on soul
parts and I'll send you a bunchof things?

SPEAKER_00 (36:11):
I I feel like you've been doing I feel like you've
been doing exhaust installs fortwo years, dude.
That wasn't just a big time.

SPEAKER_02 (36:17):
I suppose, I suppose.
But like just looking back overthe year, and I want to hear
about your 964 as well andwhat's going wrong with it, but
like this year has been epic interms of wrenching on cars.
Um my god.
I've uh I've worked on my owncar, so I've now got full
end-to-end sole performanceexhaust.
Um, I've got a stage one tune,I've got um what else have I

(36:38):
done to it?
I can't remember, but it's nowputting out like 500 and
something horses, and it just itabsolutely tears the street up.
It is so powerful.
I love it, absolutely love it.
Um, so I've been working onthat.
Um, I've worked on my friendChris's GT3 Touring, I've worked
on a 991.2 GTS, I've worked onuh uh another GT3, uh 991.2 GT3,

(37:02):
um, all like pretty enjoyablejobs, like spark plugs, um,
exhausts, uh, spoilers, um,brake jobs, the inner cooler job
just recently.
So I I'm like, I've really I'vereally enjoyed myself in the
garage.
And and actually, I've beenenjoying it so much that I've
got all of this video footagefor future videos waiting to be
edited.
And I just I just can't getaround to it.

SPEAKER_00 (37:24):
So, what's been going on with little green?
Well, hold on, hold on, hold on.
So, uh can we just talk about uhwhere you're at?
What what have you chosen now asthe exhaust setup?
And are you happy?
I want to hear about it becauseI drove so I'm gonna tell you my
my buddy Gerard has the CarreraT, as I said, and he bought uh

(37:45):
he bought a Sharkworks um valvedsports exhaust, so just to
replace the factory sportsexhaust.
And I drove that and he said tome, all the conversations we've
had have been that that there isa difference, but it's it let's
say it's subtle, it's certainlynot a big change.

(38:06):
I I've driven the car since itsounds great, but it's there's
there's not a lot of volume init.
Yeah, yeah.
Um what setup have you landed onand and what's it like?

SPEAKER_02 (38:17):
So I've got um the sole performance valved X-Pipe,
which is the equivalent of thevalve, you know, Porsche Borter
Exhaust muffler.
Yeah.
Um and that gives you um thatreally transforms the sound and
you lose a bit of weight, but itdoes really nothing to the
power.
So you you can sell it just justby doing the the valved um

(38:38):
X-pipe, you can really get adifference in the pops and the
crackles, and just the you know,it's like a throatier kind of
growl when you start it up andyou accelerate and so on.
So I've got that.
Um I tested both the cat bypasspipes as well as the cat sport
uh the sport cats, and I landedon the Spore Cats.
Just something about justsomething about the pitch and

(39:01):
the the cracks and pops that youget with it.
Um it's similar with the bypasspipes, but with the bypass
pipes, the um the sound of theturbo spooling almost overpowers
the sound of the pops and thecrackles.
Like it's just it's just for me,it was a bit too much.
Um I do like the louder turbospools with with the rest of the

(39:24):
setup I've got, but man, it wasa huge difference um with those
bypass pipes.
Yeah, yeah, really bigdifference with the with the
spooling um or the sound of thespooling.
And then I've got the sporecats.
So spore cats, uh sorry, theheaders, the sport headers, the
spore cats, and the valved Xpipe.
So that's it, end to end.
I think if the the one thingI've been toying with is

(39:47):
actually going back to thefactory center muffler.
Um because it sounds reallygood.
It does sound good.
It doesn't it's not as growlingand throaty as the X pipe, but
and maybe Maybe I'm rememberingthis wrong, but I think I was
getting a little more pops andcrackles in the downshifting

(40:07):
with the factory centre mufflerthan I was with the the soul
muffler.
But I could be I could be wrongthere.
Um but the the performancedifference with the cats and
especially the headers is quitea lot.
Yeah.
You can tell it.
Yeah, you can tell it in thethrottle response.
Um I think you know on paper itsays between the two of them you
can get like an extra 20 to 30horses altogether.

(40:30):
Um and I I wouldn't honestly,I'm not that kind of a I'm not
good enough.
Like I'm not good enough to knowthe difference between you know
a 400 or a 425 horsepower car.
It's just a powerful car to me.
But the throttle response isdefinitely definitely um better.
And then add on top of that thesoft tronic tune.
Um the car the car drives nowlike I mean, I wouldn't say like

(40:53):
a a GT3 or I wouldn't say like aturbo because obviously they're
very different cars, but interms of that um butt dyno kind
of feeling, the thrust, yeah, the thrust, um, it's just
incredible.
It's a completely different carin that respect.

SPEAKER_00 (41:08):
Wow.
See, so just to go back to it,this idea of of the ride height
being a winter project, I thinkyou're thinking about it wrong.
Because some of you're gonna bedriving around, you're probably
gonna go to your PorschePancakes thing, maybe there's
some cars and coffee.
That is the time where thestance is crucial.

(41:29):
Crucial.
And it's not even a project forsomeone of your immense skill,
your talent, your experience.
This is uh this is a Saturdayafternoon with a few beers, kind
of a kind of an exercise.
You could you could be donetoday.
You could do it today.

SPEAKER_02 (41:46):
You think so?

SPEAKER_00 (41:47):
Or probably tomorrow, because I know it's
Friday night where you are, butstill, you could set up tonight,
whip the wheels off tomorrowmorning and be done.
Maybe be cruising around withpeople's heads turning, going,
look at that guy.

SPEAKER_01 (41:59):
He's cool.

SPEAKER_02 (42:04):
You know, well, when you put it like that, no, I
don't I don't think so.
But maybe, maybe, maybe youknow, the the other part of it
is I think I'm not I'm not sureI've bought the right product.
Like I bought these um HRlowering springs on a whim, and
I'm wondering actually if Ishould have maybe thought about
it and put some more into like aproper you know set of Olens or

(42:26):
or Bill Steens or somethingwhich isn't just$400 and you
just slap it on.

SPEAKER_00 (42:33):
Do you know everyone I know who's done uh lowering
springs uh on the factory shockshas been has had no problem
because because to go to Olensor KW or something like that is
um that's a that's a reallyexpensive upgrade.
Yeah and and and I think I thinkPorsche's suspension is actually

(42:55):
incredibly well dialed as it is.
So I yeah, I don't I don't thinkyou need to do that.
The only thing I would say, andand I don't know if this is the
case for 991s or not, myunderstanding is that the HR
lowering, yeah, you kind of gotyou've got HR or you've got
IBARK lowering springs.

SPEAKER_01 (43:16):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (43:16):
And everything I've ever read is that uh people have
found with the IBARC loweringsprings, they tend to just be a
little more compliant, whereasdoing the HR springs, uh they
tend to just be a little harsherin the ride quality.
So I've heard.
I I can't I can't speak to thatwith any with any um real

(43:38):
authority, but I'm pretty surethey tend to have a slightly a
slightly softer spring rate withthe with the eye bark.
So if you're putting them on aon a stock setup, they probably
retain the stock feel whilehaving the lower the lower ride
height.
So gotcha, gotcha.

SPEAKER_02 (43:55):
Which means I've just probably given you an out,
but well, so so my my winterplans were um lowering springs.
Yeah, I want to get my steeringwheel uh refurbished.
I'm gonna send it down to CarterCustoms in Texas, and I want to
have yellow deviated stitchingon because you know what I'm

(44:16):
like with deviated stitchingwith with you know refresh
leather.
Um I want to swap out the well,I'm not I'm on the fence.
I like I've thought about doingyellow seat belts instead of my
black seat belts to tie themwith the other yellow accents.
Yeah, yeah.
Um so you know that's that'skind of on on the list of
things.
Um I don't know what else.

(44:38):
Maybe that's enough.
I'm not sure.

SPEAKER_00 (44:41):
It's looking it's looking pretty good.
It's it's got a you can tellit's an enthusiast's car now.
It's not you know, it's notdentist spec, it's not your
daily driver.
You've done a good job of makingit look like it's the weekend
fun car.
I appreciate it, thanks man.

SPEAKER_02 (44:57):
And I've resisted putting um a wing on it.
Because I I'm always temptedwith wings, always.

SPEAKER_00 (45:06):
No, no, no, just say no to wings.
Yeah, just say no, absolutelynot.
I mean, I think don't get mewrong, a GT3 with a wing, no
problem, no problem.

SPEAKER_02 (45:17):
But don't yeah, no wing on a Carrera, just little I
you know that I that was the onething I said to myself when I
got this car was I'm gonna stickwith the silhouette, I'm not
gonna put a wing on it, and Ihaven't.
No, um and I haven't beentempted either.
But every time I see Chris's GT3touring, I see that little sexy
lip on the back, and I think Icould have that.

(45:41):
You could have that, you couldhave that.
Um and and then my friendChristian uh with the the green
992, he's just put the factoryarrow kit on his 992 GTS.
Right.
I like it, I like it.
But no, I I'm not gonna gothere.
I'm not gonna go there.
Yeah, but I am tempted with thatlittle touring lip every now and
again.

SPEAKER_00 (46:00):
Yeah, I mean this is a little gurney, that's alright.
That's okay.
It if it if they can work it ona touring, that's cool.
But yeah, I I think I I don'tknow.
I I don't like wings on anythingother than a GT3.

SPEAKER_02 (46:12):
Yeah, and even even having said that, I've got to
the point now where you know thethe the auto amateur James from
five years ago would havealready slapped that GT3 touring
lip on the back.
Today's auto amateur James saysit's not a GT3, don't put that
lip on the back.
It's just a Carrera.
Love it for being a Carrera.

SPEAKER_00 (46:32):
Yeah, a hundred percent.
And and you know, a highly, highly capable car that you've
made even quicker, you've madeeven better.
That's you know, there's nothingthat car can't do.
Love it, love it as is.

SPEAKER_02 (46:44):
No, carbon fiber, that's the day for it, you know,
it's a conversation.
Carbon fiber and deviatedstitching.
Yeah, baby.
So, what about little green?
Tell me about little green.

SPEAKER_00 (46:57):
Uh, little green's good.
I mean, I had um I had a serviceright before the rally.
I thought this is great.
I'm not trying.
Because what always happens orinevitably happens for me is
that a week out from the rally, there's something catastrophic
on Little Green that I'm tryingto solve.
It'll have given me trouble-freemotoring all year, and then the

(47:17):
week before the rally, somethingcomes up.
Right just just just absoluteclockwork.
And yeah, this this rally was nodifferent.
I took it into Stuart 9 Auto forit's for just a service.
Um, there's nothing untoward inthat service, but the one thing
I did ask him to look at wasthat the lower sill cover on the
driver's side had just comeaway.

(47:39):
Now, this is really common on a964, right?
There's just these little tabs, these little plastic tabs, and
they break off, so you have toreplace them and then you just
push it back in.
It's not really a particularlydifficult job.
But when I got it back, he said,Hey, the this the rear seal
cover, which is the sort ofshark fin-shaped one, was
lifting off.

(48:00):
And he said, I think this one'sactually broken.
And by the time I got it home,it was like hanging off,
basically.
And I'll share, I'll share aphoto with you uh later on.
But um, yeah, it was justflapping about, and I thought,
well, I can't have it like thaton the rally, so what do I need
to do?
Apparently it's very common.

(48:20):
So that I said, what do I do?
Do I do I just replace the thelittle plastic tabs?
And he said, No, no, it'sactually the sill cover itself
is broken, so you need toreplace that, paint it,
reinstall.
And I'm like, well, I'm notgonna I'm not gonna do that
before the rally.
So what what what uh compromisesolution can I find?
So I've got some JD Weld uhplastic glue and uh glued the

(48:46):
two tabs and then just used aclamp to clamp it on, right?
I'm thinking this is great, I'vegot it sorted.
I don't have a really good trackrecord when it comes to gluing
plastic.
Like me too, dude.
It just I don't I've doneinterior trim bits where I keep
adding the the JD weld and thenit just goes gooey and it never

(49:08):
sets and it never actuallyworks, right?
So and the other thing that wasworking against me was that this
it's a it's a curved piece ofplastic that when when it is
attached at the base and at thetop, it's actually bending it.
So as you're gluing it, it itwants to pull away.

(49:28):
So of course eventually itpulled away.
So uh I'm messaging Gerard, my964 buddy, and he's like, Why
did you do it like that?
You need to take it off.
And I'm like, Yeah, yeah, okay, good call.
So I took it off.
Uh, and then you could just seewhat was hilarious was the two
tabs where the glue goes, youcould see clearly it has been

(49:49):
glued 20 times previously.
You know, previous owners havejust glued this, it's lasted
three years and they've they'vegotten on with their lives.
And I thought, well, you knowwhat?
I've had it a long time.
It's clearly lasted with glue.
I think I can make it last againwith glue.
I don't think I need to replaceit.
So I did.

(50:09):
I was just meticulous.
I took it off, I glued it, I satit in the sun to let that glue
really set.
I had it clamped while it wassetting.
I put it back on the car, andsure enough, it uh it has stuck.
It's lasted, so we're we'reokay.
So I mean, look, worst case onthe rally, I was I was thinking
if it comes off on the rally, here's what I'm gonna do.

(50:32):
I'm gonna undo the rear tab, which creates a hole in the main
bodywork, and I was gonna drilla hole in the actual sill cover,
figuring that fuck it, it's deadanyway, and then just cable tie
that thing.
So I would have had a visiblecable tie holding it on in my
car, and I'm like, at thatpoint, I don't care.

SPEAKER_02 (50:51):
Well, I'm the guy that was driving through um
these incredible uh roads acrossthe prairies um two years ago, I
think, or three years ago inBluey, um, when we were coming
back from a the first BlackHills trip, and somebody told me
that one of my underpanels wasflapping on the bottom of the
car.
You're gonna say one of yourunderpants was flapping.

(51:11):
Well, that that always happens.
Uh I I was the guy that pulledover to the side of the car,
everybody was getting outthinking about how we could fix
it.
And without even having anydiscussion, I just reached under
the car, yanked the entireunderbottle panny off.
Uh the sorry, the yankedunderbottle penny.
I know.

SPEAKER_00 (51:28):
I yanked that would they be on the audio amateur
store, under bottle pennies?

SPEAKER_02 (51:32):
That's exactly right.
I yanked that thing off and justput it on the side of the road.
And so somewhere in the middleof Nebraska, there is this, you
know, I don't know, four by fourkind of size piece of plastic
that I just pulled off the car.
I was like, fuck it, lads, we'redone.
Get in, let's go, let's keepdriving.
It was awesome.
But you know, I see those um, Isee those, you know, social

(51:53):
media, you know, kind of reelsof people using um using glue
and braces or clamps or or thoseum plastic welding kind of kits.
And I'm like, wow, staple kit.
Yeah, it's like you can fix allof these amazing things.
Whenever I try it, it's like youknow, pintrest fail.
It's too much glue, it's notquite in the right place, it's

(52:14):
not hanging on properly, and Iend up just throwing it away.
I'm like, fuck it, I don't needit.

SPEAKER_00 (52:19):
That's me with the center console in my car.
It has this one bracket that is,I mean, it's decidedly fragile,
and you see them everywhere forsale, and the bracket's broken.
But I've tried to fix it fivetimes, and every time I do, I
just end up with half set, youknow, the glue that's kind of
soft but sticky.

SPEAKER_02 (52:39):
Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (52:40):
I'm just overdoing it clearly, but yeah, I've no
idea what I'm doing.
So I did I did wonder, I thinkwe spoke about it uh in our very
detailed show notes yesterdayabout about um you know
discussing in detail an in-depthanalysis of Porsche's current

(53:01):
profit situation.
So um I understand you've uhpulled together a PowerPoint
presentation that you're gonnatake me through.

SPEAKER_02 (53:08):
No, you know what I did?
I didn't use Chat GBT, I didn'tdo my own research, I watched
Jay Reed's recent video, and hedoes a fantastic job.
He does a fantastic job ofparroting back whatever he has
Googled and put into a video.

SPEAKER_00 (53:25):
So, yes, tell me tell me what did Jay say?
Let's Jay can be our Oracle.

SPEAKER_02 (53:30):
All right, Jay can be our Oracle, and I'm gonna do
a horrible job of paraphrasingand probably get it wrong.
But uh you know, from from myunderstanding, a big part of it
is that they're shiftingstrategy because um the the EV
market is cool.
Yeah, I mean I don't know whatit's like down under, but over
here in um the states, peopleare driving them, but you know,
if you believe the stats thatthe Jay's talking about, at

(53:53):
least um the market here iscooled.
Porsche has put a bunch ofinvestment in that, which
they're now sort of pulling backfrom, um, as well as trying to
keep all of their combustionengine kind of lines going.
Um so I I think I think to sumit up, it's probably that is one
huge contributing factor, thethe shift in EV strategy and the
market cooling.

(54:13):
And from what I understand aswell from Mr.
Reed, the Chinese market, whichhas kept them going massively
over the last so however manyyears, that's also come to a bit
of a halt, especially so in thislast and then maybe one other,
which is you know, I I don'tknow about Trump and his
tariffs, but that can't havehelped.
I don't really, you know, knowtoo much about that, but that

(54:34):
also can't have helped.
So Porsche found themselves inthis in this little sort of
sticky situation.
But from what I understand, ifif they've lost a bunch of
operating profit, um, you know, what does that mean for their I
don't know, what does that meanfor their reserves?
What does that mean for the therevenue they're gonna pull down
over the next few years?
Presumably they're gonna bedoing a bunch of restructuring,

(54:55):
they're probably gonna be layingpeople off to a degree, but
like, is it is it just a shockvalue headline or does it really
matter to the company?
I don't know enough abouteconomics really to have an
opinion on it.

SPEAKER_00 (55:06):
Uh you've got to think that if your profits have
gone down by 90%, that there arenegative outcomes uh that will
associated negative outcomessuch as layoffs and that type of
stuff.
I know they're gonna they aregonna roll back some of these um
some of the investments they'vemade and the and the directions

(55:28):
they've set, they will rollthose back.
Um but there's still a there'sstill a massive cost associated
with it because yeah, I do knowthat in the Chinese market the
what has happened is the thebottom has fallen out of the
luxury EV side of things, right?
And so if you've bet reallyheavily on that, that becomes a

(55:48):
real problem.
And in fact, I th that's aproblem globally, because at the
end of the day, why would Ispend 300 grand on a tacan when
I can get a a BYD for 60 grand?
Now I know they're verydifferent markets, I understand
the buyer for those two cars isdifferent, but but nothing is
gonna depreciate as fast as anEV.

(56:08):
So, you know, it's a massive,massive problem.

SPEAKER_02 (56:12):
Have you looked at the the Tycan used market
prices?
I was amazed.
Like you can pick up uh not Imean not the not the turbo
versions, but you can pick upthe TyCAN 4 or whatever the
entry model is now.
It's like 20 grand US, 25 grandUS.

SPEAKER_00 (56:27):
20 grand US.

SPEAKER_02 (56:28):
Yeah, yeah, that that I mean that isn't that
incredible.
I I actually thought at onepoint maybe I'll just trade in
the Cayenne and just you knowcheck this out for a while
because it's so cheap.
I mean they're not they're notall that low, but you know,
we're talking like probably 20grand US on the very lowest end
to a mid-range model with acouple of years on it and a
couple of you know 20, 50,30,000 or whatever.

(56:49):
We're talking about maybe 50grand US.
But considering a few years backthey were going for 120, 130,
140 US, that's yeah, that'sinsane.
That's a huge density.

SPEAKER_00 (57:02):
And and look, this is this is the problem with EVs
and particularly luxury EVs.
It's like, you know, you don't Imean some people do, I suppose,
but EVs are an appliance, and bythat I mean that because they
are largely um they're still intheir growth phase with respect

(57:23):
to the technology and the rangeand all of these things, right?
So buying a second hand one is abit like buying a used iPhone,
right?
Like an iPhone 10, you're notgonna just not gonna do that.
Yeah, and whereas I know I canbuy a 30-year-old Porsche or any
brand for that matter, and thatcar's gonna keep going.
Yeah, whereas there's a I thinkthe the psychology of it is that

(57:46):
there's a little bit of a senseof there's a disposability
around these products untilthey've reached this kind of
development plateau thatinternal combustion engine cars
have reached.
So, yeah, I I think there'sstill plenty to play out.
The thing that I'm excited aboutand optimistic about is that I'm
reading a lot, and I don't knowif this is confirmed yet, but

(58:09):
that Porsche have shelved theidea that the Kamen and Boxster
platforms will be EV only andthat there will be an internal
combustion engine version.
I think there is there's stillgoing to be an EV version, yeah.
But oh man, I mean, I that onewas always one I struggled with
because I figure, first up, usehybrid technology, they're using

(58:33):
that in the in the turbo, they're using using that in the
GTS, it's brilliant.
Yeah, I've got no problem withthat.
Yeah, but I always figured ifyou look at the world's response
to the four-cylinder 718 Kamenand Boxster and the outcry over
the sound of those cars comparedwith the outgoing six-cylinder

(58:54):
versions, it was like this car'sgreat, it does everything right,
but the sound is terrible, it'sdestroyed it.
You know, those cars you canpick up so cheap because, in
spite of how good they are, people just don't rate the
sound.
So then imagine taking that anddoing an EV version of it,
unless you build in, you know, kind of goofy tricks like hey,

(59:15):
you've got you've got a set offactory sounds like you know,
you can have a uh a 917K or youcan have a 962 or you can have a
993 GT2.
Yeah, that's right.
Unless you do goofy stuff likethat.
Who what who is the enthusiastthat's gonna buy the EV Cayman

(59:37):
or Boxster?

SPEAKER_02 (59:38):
Yeah, I don't know.
Don't know.

SPEAKER_00 (59:40):
Anyway, I'm hopeful.
I'm hopeful there's an enginecoming.

SPEAKER_02 (59:43):
I I think it's teenage YouTube millionaires.
There's there's actually a kidthat um at my son Adam watches
on YouTube who's he honestlylooks about twelve years old,
but he's driving a Takan turboum in his in his latest video,
so he must be old enough todrive.
But I think there's thedemographic for you right there.
YouTube millionaire nerd kids.

SPEAKER_00 (01:00:06):
And there's so many of them.

SPEAKER_02 (01:00:09):
So we're going to be wrapping up soon.
I I want to hear about the topicwe said we'd leave to the last
because I don't know howcontroversial this is going to
be, but you let the kid who'sriding your daughter ride your
car.

SPEAKER_00 (01:00:27):
That is that's not cool.
That's not cool at all.
That that hurts more than when Ilet him drive a car.

SPEAKER_02 (01:00:37):
I've been waiting 24 hours to say that.
Hey, you fuck.
I'll edit that out if you wantme to.
But yeah, tell me about your uhyour daughter's boyfriend who's
been driving.
Like, what on earth possessedyou to give anyone under the age
of 20 odd the keys to your car?
No less some dude who's goingout with your daughter.

(01:01:00):
Like, are you feeling okay?
Have you had a stroke?

SPEAKER_00 (01:01:03):
Okay, well, first of all, he's he's he's older than
20.
Uh he's a he's a car guy, sodefinitely got that going for
him.
Nice kid.
And uh is he driving a HondaCivic?
Do you know what?
He did roll up in a Honda Civica few days ago.
But he's had he's look, he'she's one, he's actually um I

(01:01:26):
feel like Chris Cluel would lovehim because he's he seems to
have a different car every twoweeks.
Uh he's had a he's had an olderBMW, he's had yeah, he had this
Civic type R, which I think he'sactually getting.
Did he swap it?
Eventually, I think he'sswapping that for his car.
No, no.
And he's he's got a golf GTI.
So he's he's a car, he's a carguy, which is great.

(01:01:48):
And anyway, so he was around atour house.
I said, let's let's go for adrive uh on Sunday morning.
So he jumps in the car, we gofor a drive.
That was great.
He was he was enjoying it.
He was probably he didn't sayso, but I'm sure he was probably
underwhelmed by the you know 260horsepower of my 35-year-old
964.

(01:02:08):
Uh, but anyway, I you know I goton it here and there, drove some
twisties, and showed him alittle bit of what the car can
do, and that was great.
And then we just pulled intothis town and I thought, ah,
let's let him have a drive.
What why not?
Like the car's insured, itdoesn't matter.
Uh, he's he's not on his peaplates, which is you know where
you have some restrictions.

(01:02:29):
So yeah, why not let him have adrive?
I know he can drive a manual, sohe got in and had a drive.
The I was fine, I was notnervous.
He probably drove a littlecloser to some cars than I would
have.
I I I like to leave more of alet's say space cushion.
Um and uh but no, it was uh itwas great.
I I think I think he enjoyed it.

(01:02:50):
We got to a faster road, and I'mlike, all right, I'll take it
from here.
But uh you're a good man.

SPEAKER_02 (01:02:57):
You're a good man, Charlie Brown.
I I'm not so sure I would havedone that.
Um having said that, when my umwhen my godson came over from
Germany last summer, um, I gavehim the keys to the 9-11, just
like wholeheartedly, and thecayenne.
Uh he's um he's like 25 yearsold.
Um, and my my other godson, uhJamie from the UK, I also gave

(01:03:18):
him the keys to the car.
So yeah, maybe I was a littleharsh there, Andy.
Maybe maybe you can get the car.

SPEAKER_00 (01:03:23):
Yeah, and do you know the other thing?
Yeah, well, here's the otherthing, right?
It's it's an underpoweredall-wheel drive 9-11.
So it's hard for him to get intoo much trouble with it.
Unless he just doesn't know howto drive.
Yeah, you know what I mean?
It's like if you can drive amanual, you can drive that car,
and you can feel some of itsdriving dynamics, and that's

(01:03:46):
that's what he got.
Like I say, he didn't say so,but he was probably I'm sure he
was probably a littleunderwhelmed by the by the
power.
Um, but uh no, it was great, itwas good fun, it was really good
fun.

SPEAKER_02 (01:03:57):
I I think this is a topic that's pretty sensitive
for me, me close to my heart inmany ways, because you know, I
have a daughter, she's onlyfour, and um, I'm dreading,
dreading her growing up to theage where she has boyfriends.
My friend Chris, we mentionedbefore, Catman Chris, uh, his
daughter Madeline, uh, the lastyear of high school, and she's
got a boyfriend.
And uh, you know, I like to jokehim a little bit about what's

(01:04:20):
that like, but I've been seeingthese uh these videos on TikTok
recently, and it's all the sameguy doing it.
And um, the caption is Um, I'vetold my girlfriend's son I'll do
to him whatever he does to her.
And it's like it's like they'resitting around watching TV
together and he's holding hishand, and he just looks really,

(01:04:40):
really uncomfortable, and thedad's there holding his hand, or
they're at a Christmas party, and he's got the boyfriend sat
on his knee, and he's likeputting his arms around.
I don't know, it's weird times,dude.
Weird times, mate.

SPEAKER_00 (01:04:52):
No, no one will ever be good enough for your
daughter.
That's the that's the truth ofbeing a dad with a daughter, but
um good enough to drive you 964.
Yeah, yeah, 100%.
And I I I I I hope I hope youenjoyed it.

SPEAKER_02 (01:05:06):
So we're gonna wrap this little number up by uh
talking about a video of theweek that I have not seen.
So, Andy, tell me about thisvideo.

SPEAKER_00 (01:05:15):
Have you not seen it?
Okay, so uh Haggerty just did uha new video celebrating 50 years
of the 9-11 turbo.
Oh and nice you know, I meanwhen I love Haggerty's stuff
anyway, right?
You got Jason Kamise, he's he'sthe main host of this video.
Kamise's awesome.

(01:05:36):
Um, our boy Henry Catchpoleshows up towards the end.
Uh uh Jeff Zwart, Patrick Long, like just all of the Porsche
people that you just love are inthis video.
Um and it's just great.
Like, you know, they they kindof talk through the whole
lineage, they're drivingeverything from uh the you know

(01:05:59):
the original 930, which youknow, 19 mid-70s, what is it,
75?
And and you know, he talks aboutthat car was just must have
seemed like a rocket ship in thetime.
At the time, yeah, just anabsolute rocket ship.
And then even talking about umthe turbo lag and and actually

(01:06:20):
demonstrating what that lookslike.
Oh, really?
You know, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it's it's incredible.
He's he's talking, and this isit, it's a little bit um,
there's maybe some creativelicense in it, but he's got his
foot to the floor talking, saying, Yeah, still nothing,
still nothing, and then there'sthis sudden, you know, absolute
uh burst of of acceleration.

(01:06:40):
Yeah, but then it goes all theway through to you see um uh you
see Patrick Long driving a 964Turbo S crazy.
They drive um what does Zwartdrive?
A 997 GT2, just you know,absolute widow maker, yeah.

(01:07:00):
Um, you know, really, really, really cool.
And just yeah, just all theseace cars, and then it finishes
with uh catchpole uh driving thenew Turbo S clearly in Germany,
and gorgeous production.
I mean, you watch the credits atthe end, and you know, they had
something like you know, 30people work on this thing.
Oh wow.
So it's not like a couple of notlike a couple of YouTubers just

(01:07:23):
going out and shooting on theirown, yeah.
But you know, done they did theydid one a little while ago, I
think, called Giants or RacingGiants, or they might be giants
or something, which was allabout Porsche and uh endurance
racing.
So this was this was the samekind of film, but all about the

(01:07:44):
9-11 turbo.
And it's if you want half anhour of really high quality,
great Porsche viewing on YouTubeon your 4K TV that feels not
like a YouTube show, but it'slike some kind of documentary.
Yeah, it's I highly, highly uhencourage you to check it out.

SPEAKER_02 (01:08:02):
I'll give it a go.
I'll give it a go.
Yeah, well, buddy, marryforemost Christmas if you sell.

SPEAKER_00 (01:08:10):
And to you, yeah, and to and to everybody
listening.
I thanks for uh thanks fortuning in.
It's do you know what?
It's funny because I think but II messaged James the other day
and said, I miss you, bro, andI'm not even kidding.
And uh, because this is sort ofthe only time we talk, right?

SPEAKER_02 (01:08:28):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So we like we catch up on lifeand talk Porsche at the same
time.
Yeah, yeah.
Everybody everybody's witnessingour friendship in real time, uh
including me tagging you and youtagging me on on Instagram.
Um, but yeah, this is a greatway to take out the the year and
uh I hope you have a great timeover the holidays.
Watch that boyfriend in law.

(01:08:49):
Um I he he feels suspicious tome.
Anyone driving a Honda Court,I'm immediately suspicious of.
Um but yeah.
Love to the family, man.
And thanks for listening,everybody.
We'll catch you in the next one.
Thanks, gang.
