Speaker 1 (00:07):
Andy Gorns, how are
you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Hey, hey, james,
we're back.
We're back two weeks in a row, unless, you know, something goes
horribly wrong, which isentirely possible.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Two weeks in a row,
and so let me ask you a question
.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Well, hang on, Before
you do, before you do,
obviously you've got the shootnotes there.
Well, that's what I was goingto ask.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
The show notes hang
on Before you do.
Before you do, obviously you'vegot the shoot notes there.
Well, that's what.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I was going to ask
the show notes, I mean.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I don't seem to be
able to find the show notes this
week, Andy.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Well, yeah, so second
week in a row that you've
dropped the ball on this.
I don't know.
I feel like you owe thelisteners more.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Are there any show
notes this week Andy?
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Listen, I don't think
we need to get into a game of
he said, she said.
The show notes themselvesaren't, so they're not really
the issue, are they?
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Um, not when there
aren't any show notes.
Andy.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
It doesn't matter,
it's going to be a cracking
episode.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Anyway, welcome to
Curb and Canyon.
I think maybe what you shouldhave said was welcome to Curb
and Canyon.
Unscripted.
Yeah, well, that's it, that'sit, so I did do.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
you know what's funny
?
I started writing show notestoday and then, I don't know, I
actually got distracted by lifeand real work.
And then.
So when you messaged me saying, hey, are we recording, Because
this is like five o'clock yourtime, obviously in the morning,
so way worse for you than me.
I just sat down to watchNetflix with Kath.
(01:52):
We just had dinner, I wassettled, I had the dog on the
couch, Happy, happy night.
I got your message and I waslike oh fuck.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Oh, no message and I
was like oh fuck, oh no, so is?
Kath sat on the couch therelonely waiting for you to come
back.
If you told her, you're justgonna be like I'll be right back
it.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
It didn't go well, if
I'm honest.
Oh dear, she'd make quite anice dinner, but tomorrow night
is uh is date night, so I'm sureI'll redeem myself oh, oh, good
lad, yeah, yeah, yeah, give herthe Andy Gaunt special.
Yeah, do you know what?
There's still plenty, plenty totalk about.
And do you know what?
I've got to do this?
I've got to get this out of theway early.
(02:36):
I need to start with an apology.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
To you.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Oh no.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Yeah, no, I do, I do.
I had a lot of messages throughthe week people laughing about
you, know your whole thing aboutyou were driving and I mean, I
don't maybe apologies not quitewarranted, but your whole thing
about how you were driving andthe stripes moved in the wind.
(03:03):
Yeah, and I told you that was,the stripes moved in the wind.
Yeah, and I told you that wasthe dumbest thing I've ever
heard.
In fact, I'm pretty sure thatwas my exact phrase.
That is the dumbest thing I'veever heard.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
I did some research.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
I'm still a bit
wounded, actually, just by how
immediately you dismissed that.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
So, after I had quite
a few messages about it, all of
which agreed with me everyonethinks you're a knucklehead, so
you feel comfortable in that.
But I did suddenly think tomyself, well, I wonder if that
could be a thing and I don'tthink it's the driving and the
wind, you know, blowing themaway or blowing them to move but
(03:42):
I did suddenly think, okay, isthere an issue with sticking
something on ceramic coat?
So I googled this and on abunch of different forums I
ended up in a deep dive onreddit, but there was a ford
ranger or raptor forum.
You should check it out, you'dlove it.
(04:03):
And there was a whole thingabout can you put decals of any
description on, uh, afterceramic coating, and dude the
number of comments sayingabsolutely not.
I've had my shop tell me, onceyou do this, you can't put
decals on People saying I triedit, mine peeled off in a week,
(04:27):
all of these things about.
Basically, if you are going toput decals on your car, do not
ceramic coat it ahead of time.
Now, I'm not saying that thatmeans yours could have just
blown off centre with the wind, but there may be something in it
this is the worst apology ever, but okay well it's not an
(04:49):
apology it's, it's it's acompletely reserved.
Hey, listen, maybe there'ssomething in your story.
I'm not sorry.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
I yeah, I'm not sorry
so you take, you take what
you've just discovered onlineand apply it to my logic and I
think you've got some prettysolid ground to stand on.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
I mean you do, but we
don't have any real evidence,
do we yeah?
Speaker 1 (05:17):
we do.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Just a theory from
you and let's be honest, how
many of your theories over thejourney have been right.
There have been somequestionable ones.
I want to say yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
I'm going to stand by
this one, though, because I
have the microphone and there isno one else apart from you here
to argue with me, and also I'mgoing to volunteer to edit this
episode, so I can also edit thisin my favor.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
So you'll find
something later on where you'll
just throw in a comment like Ithink the 964 is the most
beautiful 911 shape and I'll sayI agree, james, and then you'll
put that in Exactly Right afterthis, exactly, exactly yeah.
Okay, Look, do you know what?
I know that for our shtick I'vegot to be against you.
But you know, maybe there'ssomething in it.
Maybe there's something in it.
(06:09):
All right, I'll take it.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
I'll take it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
That's as close to an
apology as you can get, I will
take it.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
I'll take it.
That is as close to Andy Gorneating on air, I'm gonna guess I
I have in the last week so havecontinued to have few people
ask me why I got rid of mystripes.
And I've gone back to thatconversation from last week
(06:36):
several times and, uh, everytime I've just been like I didn
didn't like him, just pulled himoff.
I've just thought to myself.
They blew away.
They blew away, andy Gorns.
Well, all right.
So you asked me to start with.
I've got something to startwith as well.
Did you see what happened toJay Reid this week?
I?
Speaker 2 (06:56):
was just about to say
.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Poor guy.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
We've got to make a
shout out to a fellow content
creator.
What?
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Did you see the
footage?
Yeah, yeah, apparently, the copthought it was his fault.
How in the world based on thatfootage although the cop didn't?
Speaker 2 (07:19):
get to see that
footage, but the cop got to see
it in real life.
But how, in the left-hand lane, honda HR-V on his right goes to
merge and Jay is already notonly alongside him at this stage
but in front of him.
I'm describing this like it's aturn one incident at an F1 race
(07:41):
.
But he is actually in front ofhim and the dude just merges
left and just slams into his car.
And Jay's actually uploadeddash cam footage to YouTube and
I don't know.
To me it's cut and dry, otherdude's fault.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Right, right, right,
and they're on a roundabout.
They're in a turn on aroundabout and coming off.
So Jay's in the lane as you goover a roundabout, going
straight, and the car on theright should only-.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Decides to turn left,
yeah exactly.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
The car on the right
should only be coming off.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
He can only go
straight.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
It's breaking the law
immediately, oh my God, I would
have been so pissed if thathappened.
That was stupid accident yeah,a hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Does this level of
media coverage?
You know a hard-hitting uh,universally listened to podcast
like ours, um at all impactjay's claim uh to the other
tribe of being at fault.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
I hope I don't think
so, given that jay works in the
insurance industry and he'sbasically tried to just put the
entire thing into the back ofhis mind tells me that he
doesn't think he's got very goodhopes here.
I just hope they don't total acar.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
It doesn't.
I haven't seen all of the videoyet because I started watching
it today and actually put it asbullet point one on the on the
um, never to be seen show notes, but I didn't get to finish
watching the video.
The damage didn't look all thatbad from what I'd seen on
instagram, but is it?
Is there more to it?
Speaker 1 (09:18):
from.
From what I saw, it looks likehis door will need to be
replaced and the rear quarterpanel will need to get replaced
as well.
It also doesn't look like thetype of damage you know the
paintless dent repair is goingto fix.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
No, no, no, no,
absolutely not.
But I don't know.
I don't think that's a totaljob, unless it's caused some
sort of damage to the rear axle.
You know that impact.
It looks as though it's hit therear right rim.
Yeah, so to the rear axle.
You know that impact.
It looks as though it's hit therear right rim.
Yeah, so maybe, maybe there'ssomething in that, but I I can't
imagine them totaling the caron the basis of that, surely?
Speaker 1 (09:51):
but you know porsche
doors are expensive, so I've
been going through this umprocess the last couple of weeks
in my cayenne.
Um, my, my darlingmother-in-law absolutely love
her to bits, in all sincerityborrowed Ruthie's car to take
the kids out.
So she's doing a very noblething, very gracious thing
(10:14):
Reverses my wife's car into theside of my Cayenne.
Of course of course, reversesit into the side of my cayenne
and basically takes out thedriver's door and the driver's
passenger door.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Okay, so I got a.
I got a question.
How does one, how, how does onetemper their reaction in this
moment?
Because, you know, like if it'sone of your kids and they've
grown up and they've done that, you read them the riot act.
But what, what do you do whenit's your mother-in-law?
It's, it's your mother-in-law.
You're gonna be like, ah,gritted teeth, it, it's okay.
(10:55):
What did you say?
Speaker 1 (10:58):
in all honesty, in
the back of you read the right,
no, no, no in.
In all honesty, I was just soglad it wasn't the 9-11 that I
actually just didn't care.
I you know yeah I was likelynette, it's fine, don't.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Don't worry, I'm just
glad you're okay, everything's
fine good, good answer, you know, good answer, that's, that's
you know and you know.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
To be fair, though,
she was us a favor, she was
taking the kids out, so it's allgood.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
However, back to the
Sounds like she was taking your
K in out.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
She might as well
have done so.
I went to get a quote for thedoors.
We're talking like three granda door.
What?
Yeah, $3,000 a door to bereplaced and then painted.
(11:53):
These doors, I mean, the damageto mine is so bad that they're
not going to be able to pullthem out.
They've actually looked at howhard did she hit it Exactly.
I actually looked at how harddid she hit it exactly.
I mean, exactly how hard didshe hit it.
But, and actually the otherthing is, um, how did she hit it
(12:13):
?
Because all she had to do wasreverse straight out of my
garage, my three-car garage, andmy cayenne was on the far side
of the drive.
She just had to reverse outstraight and she would have
missed it by a mile, but somehowshe managed to reverse out at
an angle into the car.
Um, but yeah, we're talkinglike three grand a door.
(12:35):
So six grand is like theaverage quote I've gotten from
several different reputable bodyshops and the damage is so bad
that they won't do the fillerand the paint.
They actually want to order thedoors and replace them.
Um, but even with filler andpaint, they were talking about,
you know, three or four grand.
(12:56):
So, um, if an insurance.
This is just an insurance job, Isee uh, yes, that's right, but
but what I'm saying is, likeback to Jay's situation.
How much is Jay's car's worthwith that mileage, that age?
Yeah, four or five grand'sworth of damage, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
I don't know.
I've got no idea what a 928goes for in the US, but surely
it can't be anywhere near atotal loss.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
There's, there's no
well, I didn't, he didn't he
just spend five grand on it.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
I think he bought it
for five grand well then, jay,
I'm sorry, you had a good runyeah, I know, oh jay, yeah, I
know.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
And right before the
tale of the dragon got it for
him.
Absolutely gutted for him.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
He's putting on a
brave face, though what's he
going to drive on that trip?
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Well, I hope he
drives that car.
You know, denton, all I hope hedrives that car because he's
put so much work into it.
He's just put a new exhaust onit and it sounds absolutely
incredible, absolutely amazing,amazing.
Yeah, Sorry, jay, love you,mate.
Yeah, um yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
I'm sorry, jay.
Love you mate.
Yeah, jay, we're thinking ofyou.
Pal.
I'm very, very sorry to seewhat's happened.
That's gutting, absolutelygutting.
Now, you just mentioned Tale ofthe Dragon.
When is that coming?
What's the planning look like?
Speaker 1 (14:25):
And have you found
accommodation at the top of an
impossibly steep hill and graveldrop?
June 19th is the day we'remeeting up there, so we're
leaving a few days before that.
Sorry, did I say June July.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Yeah, I was about to
say you're living in the past,
man.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
July 19th.
Yeah, we're arriving the daybefore.
July 19th is a Friday.
It's the first meet up in themorning, um, in gatlinburg,
tennessee, and we're doing thedragon.
The next day we're doing thecherihala skyway.
The day after that, um, I thinkwe're doing the back of the
dragon, I think it's called um.
(15:00):
There'll be lots ofopportunities to take photos, to
eat, to hang out.
It's going to be so much fun.
And then we leave Minnesota toget there, I think on the
Wednesday before.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
So how many days do
you drive?
Just?
Speaker 1 (15:16):
to get there.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Two Far out.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
Yeah, two days to get
there, three days driving on
the mountain and then two daysto get back.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Well, it makes for an
epic trip for three days of
driving, doesn't?
Speaker 1 (15:28):
it, it does.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
I mean obviously no
choice.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
It is a pilgrimage,
although I would say I mean,
there's no two ways about it.
The first day is boring as hellon the way there, but the
second day there is a lot ofgreat driving.
The second day on the way therebecause you start getting into
the terrain and the twisties, and on the second day you can
actually come off the highwayand take the county roads and
(15:54):
there's a lot of great drivingon the way into the mountains.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
You've sort of
evolved that right, like you
know.
Try and do some of those traveldays as you say, get onto the
county roads and drive a fewmore more interesting things
yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
and the first time we
did it, we tried to do it in
one day and it took us 17 hoursand at one point we were stuck
in um the south side of chicagoin traffic for like three hours.
I was losing my mind, absolutely losing my mind.
That's just flat out dangerousman yeah yeah, but you know, I
(16:32):
have done a few trips like thatsince, you know, just even a few
months ago.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Yeah, yeah, is that
Skyway Road?
I can't remember what you saidit was called.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
The Charahalla Skyway
Exactly yeahalla Skyway.
The Charahalla Skyway, exactlyyeah.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
The Skyway.
Is that the one that is in thatHaggerty catch pole video with
the gt4rs where it's sort ofswooping along yeah?
Speaker 1 (16:57):
I think so, like the
ridge.
Yeah, I think that's the onethat looked that looked amazing.
Yeah, it's really, really great.
Um, and the the beauty of thatone over the dragon is that it
goes for like 50 miles or more.
Um, so you're on it for a while, where the tail of the dragon,
you know, is a little bit moreof a roller coaster ride.
You, you're, and on it in like20 minutes.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Is that how long it
is?
Speaker 1 (17:20):
20 minutes give or
take yeah, pretty much If you
can drive it without the copscatching you.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
It's great to hear
that there are so many other
roads in that region, because, you know, I think about some of
the roads that I drive, andwould I drive two days to get to
just that road?
If it was 20 minutes?
I don't know, no way.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
So it sounds like
there's so much good driving
around there, though.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Oh yeah, totally.
You could spend weeks theredriving and probably still not
do it all.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Oh, you must be
pumped.
Is this the first Tell a Dragontrip in the 991.2?
Speaker 1 (18:00):
It is yeah, bluey
Tooey oh.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Is Bluey Tooey having
anything done the tune or
anything before?
Are we lowering it before thetrip?
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Why would I lower it,
Andy?
Why would I lower it?
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Well, think how much
better it's gonna corner on that
tail of the dragon and it'lllook way better um, it is gonna
get the tune.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Yeah look, I've got
my.
I keep saying I am gonna tuneit, but it is getting at the
tune before I go.
Um, you know, I was justthinking what's what?
Speaker 2 (18:31):
what stage to the
sequel, what?
Like you know, there's stageone, stage two.
So you're not doing anyhardware.
So no, like like turbo upgradesor any of that sort of stuff,
it's just plug and play, right.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
It's just plug and
play.
It's a stage one tune.
It's going to take my 375factory horses up to about 500.
That's pretty epic, right, andit's going to take my 300 and
it's gonna take.
It's gonna take my 378 footpound talk up to about 300.
(19:04):
Sorry, 520 foot pounds of talk.
So we're talking, like you know, 991 turbo territory um yeah,
yeah, which is pretty exciting.
I'm pretty excited about it.
I've just got to get onto itand do it, but it will be done
before I go on my trip.
Um, but I was just thinkingabout this the other day the
most.
One of the things I'm mostexcited about is stopping at
(19:28):
deals gap and buying one of thestickers that has the outline of
the road which goes goes on therear quarter window behind the
driver.
I actually have a bunch of themthat I bought and you know,
send people that want them orwhatever, in my drawer here in
the office, but I refuse to putit on the car until I've
(19:51):
actually driven the road.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Until it's actually
done it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you gotta, you gotta earn it yeah exactly,
so I just that's yeah, yeah, yeah, you've got to earn it.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Yeah, exactly, that's
so cool and it's going to be
day one as well, so day one, oneof the first roads we drive
will be the Dragon.
We're going to stop and I'mjust going to.
I can't wait for that momentwhen I stick it on the car, and
then the rest of the weekend I'mgoing to be driving around and
I'll be able to show off thatsticker.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
It's going be pretty
exciting and the great thing- is
because you've got so many inyour drawer is if they've
ceramic coated your windows.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
When it just falls
off inevitably.
Well, the wind is going to pushit into a direction, just blows
.
Yeah, that makes it look like adifferent road.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
That was straight and
someone will say to you why
have have you got theNürburgring sticker on your car?
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Exactly, exactly.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Hey.
So tell me, with this stage, one tune, are there any sort of
potential pitfalls downsides?
Speaker 1 (21:02):
things that can go
wrong or things that you need to
do to support it, not from aperformance perspective so much,
but from a maintenance andprotecting the longevity of the
engine perspective.
Um, for a stage one tune, absolutely nothing, and and
especially so with the 991, andthe reason is um, the, the
engine itself is the exact sameengine that's in the S and the
exact same engine that's in theGTS.
The difference between myengine and the engine that's in
(21:27):
the GTS is the tune that Porscheput on it, but also the turbos.
The engine that I have is ableto deal with the power upgrade
and the power that it's going tobe putting out once I apply the
tune.
So there's absolutely nothingto worry about.
(21:47):
What I could do is put the GTSturbos on and, you know, get
those level of performance.
I think what I am worried aboutis you can do a stage um.
I think it's flat.
Six motorsports in orlando, florida, um have this whole like
productized set of um tunes, especially for the 991 and
(22:12):
equivalent year um box tocayman's um and they go anything
from like the stage one tune, Ithink is like three or four
grand all the way up to about$15,000 for what they call a
stage four tune and it's um,it's, it's, uh, it's the Cobb
(22:32):
tune plus um the pure turbo, umturbo spoolsools which are
bigger than the GTS factoryturbo spools and they can handle
up to, I think, something like800 horses or maybe even 850
horsepower, so they can turn a991.2 into a seven or 800
(22:57):
horsepower monster.
Now at that point.
That's where I start to getworried about you know, the kind
of long-term damage you mightbe doing to the car, because I
think that's the sort ofunproven kind of off the chart
territory there.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Yeah, that's amazing,
I mean I, I recently drove a
991.2 GTS and it's bone stock, right, bone stock.
Beautiful car, amazing car, butI couldn't believe how quick
that car was and the effortlesstorque that it had.
You know, driving it throughthe twisties up a hill and what
(23:35):
I found myself doing wasaccelerating, but not even using
all the torque and power ohyeah because it just felt like I
had so much.
And then when I would completelyfloor it, I was just laughing
my head off the whole time.
It's so fast.
So you're, you're gonna havethat level of performance yeah,
I'm pretty excited.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
I just you know
what's holding me back.
I've had this tune sat on mydesk for like the best part of a
year.
Now'm pretty excited.
I just you know what's holdingme back.
I've had this tune sat on mydesk for like the best part of a
year now.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Andy am, I afraid, do
you have warranty on the car uh
no okay, so it's not like yougot that that to worry about.
I mean, porsche are actuallyvery good at um well, at least
here in australia, even ifyou're out of warranty, they're
pretty good at goodwillreplacement of things.
But I'd imagine if they, if youhad something of warranty,
they're pretty good at goodwillreplacement of things, but I'd
imagine if you had something gowrong with the car and they saw
(24:24):
you had a crazy tune delivering800 horsepower, they might take
a, let's say, dim view.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
Yeah, probably.
Are there any tunes availablefor the 964?
Speaker 2 (24:43):
964?
Not the way you can tunesomething like a modern car
where you just plug it in andyou get this instant horsepower
lift.
There's certainly tunes I meanwith my Motec system, for
example that does allow you todo lots of different things with
the tuning.
And I know there's even evensimpler plug and play things
like the steve wong chip whichhelps alleviate some of the
(25:05):
drivability issues of the 964.
But no, you can't.
You can't really just plug alaptop into what is a mostly
mechanical uh engine setup and,and you know, just gain a 25
increase in horsepower.
It doesn't, doesn't work quitelike that.
And actually, you know, inair-cooled cars the pursuit of
(25:26):
horsepower, oh it's a bit of aone of diminishing returns.
You gotta have a lot of moneyto really get horsepower like
massive horsepower gains.
You know, I've certainlyincreased the power output on my
car with all of the changesI've made to it, but then you
(25:47):
know, I can get in my friend's964.
I don't feel a huge differencebetween the two.
To be honest, and I think youknow I've always said this, I
think if you have an air-cooledcar, you want to get it running
beautifully, you want reallygreat drivability and you want
the engine to perform at itsabsolute peak.
(26:07):
There's no doubt about that.
But the real gains are there tobe had if you get the chassis
absolutely dialed, chassisabsolutely died.
If you can get the, the chassis, the suspension, uh, all of the
alignment and all those sortsof things really sorted, then
you have a car that will justcarry momentum and and corner
(26:30):
insanely quick and you can keepup with most things.
Now, sure, if you're runningwith mostly modern stuff on a
lot of roads, driving dynamicsand power means they'll pull
away from you.
But you'd be amazed what cars Ican keep up with in the 964.
And then you know other friendswho drive 964s or even older
(26:55):
cars.
I'm thinking of my pal Simon, who drives a hot-rodded SC and
that car's been hot-rodded butprobably puts out maybe a little
less than my car, I think.
Sorry, simon, if that'sincorrect.
If you're listening, I thinkthat's right, just based on he
drove my car once.
But again, he can keep up withanyone in practically anything.
(27:16):
He's just a good driver.
He can keep up with anyone inpractically anything.
He's just a good driver.
So yeah, I've always said justfocus on getting the car to
corner really well.
And look, if you look at whatthe sort of builds that Gamroth
does, the sort of builds thatWorkshop 5001 are doing on 964s,
(27:37):
I mean there is horsepower tobe had if you build a 4-litre
engine and all that sort ofstuff.
But you're talking huge money.
Huge money Because even just todo a straight-up rebuild is
expensive, like very expensive.
Then you start messing aroundwith cams, then you start
(27:57):
messing around with increasingcapacity from 3.6 around with,
you know, increasing capacityfrom 36 to 38 or, as I say, even
four, and then it just gets big, big, big money.
And the challenge then becomesyou have to take it somewhere.
Who can do that work, deliverthat, that horsepower increase,
but also in a car that's stilldrivable and nice.
(28:20):
You know I I never want to getin my car and it just be a pig
to drive around, but it's greatwhen you, when you're fully on
it, like I, want to be able todrive my car out with one of my
kids and go for breakfast, oryeah you know, go away for a
weekend with kath in the car.
So it's still got to be.
It can't be a racing car, youknow yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
So your car's now
what?
40 years old 34, 34 years old.
How?
How much of that is originalfactory in terms of, you know,
the suspension um, the sort ofreplaceable parts?
Is there anything Consumables?
(29:02):
Yeah, is there anything therethat hasn't been replaced, to
your knowledge, in 34 years?
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Look, I don't know my
.
You know receipts andeverything only go back to, I
think, 2004 maybe.
So there's a gap in myknowledge of what work might
have been carried out prior tothat other than stamped service
books and all that sort of thing.
So I don't know, for example, whether bushings have been done
(29:29):
at any point.
I think they need to be done.
It's on new coilovers all thecontrol arms and all that sort
of stuff.
They're all the same, they'reall original.
It's really just like you say,the consumables.
So I imagine bushings may havebeen done at some point in that
(29:50):
34 years.
But there again, maybe theyhaven't.
And I've done things likecoilovers.
I've done some bushings likecoilovers.
I've done some bushings, I'vedone, uh, tie rods.
So we've changed from the tierod setup that we had to a I
think it's a 993 rs tie rodsetup that allows the car
(30:10):
because the car runs so low.
The traditional tie rods havean issue with the geometry
changes as the suspensioncompresses.
So all of that sort of stuff'sall been sorted.
But I mean, I don't think thecar could ever go back to
original now or original specnow without me spending a lot of
(30:31):
money on it yeah.
I'm too deep down the other path, so I just got to keep going.
Well little green's perfect,yeah, little.
I'll tell you what, thoughlittle green is wearing the
scars of of a lot of rallies and, uh, you know, I I mean, um,
(30:54):
I'm sure I'm accused of ofdetailing my car far too
regularly.
I just so happen to love doingit and I love driving the car
when it's clean.
I mean, literally, I don'tdrive that car without getting
someone somewhere give me somekind of positive reaction to it.
I washed it on the weekend.
I drove Ryder somewhere to drophim off.
(31:14):
I drove Ryder somewhere to drophim off and then, driving back,
this car, this Mazda, a coupleof lanes across like, swept
across in front of me and lookedlike he was trying to cut me
off so that he could turn acorner in front of me.
And suddenly the passengerwindow comes down and this kid
is just hanging out the windowwith his phone filming my car.
Like it looks amazing when it'sclean.
(31:38):
So I just love driving it clean.
But equally it's now.
These rallies do take a toll, and particularly when the
weather's bad and stuff likethat.
There is so much patina now onthe bonnet, on the front bumper,
on the rear guards, the lowersill.
(31:58):
There's some spots on it thatliterally have no paint.
So the car looks beautiful inphotos and it looks good from a
distance and it looks good atcertain angles, but when you get
close, yes, it's glossy andshiny as hell, but it's also
yeah it like a, a building fromfrom uh high cave or something I
(32:22):
don't know.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
I think you know you
see a car like that and um of
that sort of era.
You you expect that kind ofstuff yeah, it's funny because
there are some.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
You know, there are
some stunning 964s and some
stunning builds that you know, whether you see them on social
media.
There's even a few starting toreally show up.
Here in Australia we don't haveas many cool ones, but you see,
these ones that are just, youknow, have been repainted.
They're perfect, and I see themand I think, oh man, that's how
(32:53):
I want my car to look, becauseI would love to detail it to the
degree that I already do, butthe result be that the car looks
perfect.
And I can't do that, I can't getperfection out of it because
it's just too damaged.
But you know, at the end of theday I bought the car to drive
it and the experiences that haveput those scars on the car I
(33:18):
you know that's, that's why Ibought it.
And they're amazing experiencesand amazing memories.
And everyone I drive with hasthe exact same thing.
And you know anyone that'sbought a newer car.
They're smart and they've doneppf all over it because because
of the way we drive, we don'tleave them at home.
And you know their cars areprotected.
(33:40):
And it's easier if you'rebuying a new Cayman or, you know
, a recent 911, all of thetemplates for those PPF
coverings all exist versusgetting one for a 964.
It would have to be custom made.
So, no, I kind of hate thedamage in the patina, but you
(34:00):
know it's it's stories.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
You know it's all,
it's all stories so let me ask
you this if you chose to repaintyour car, would you go for?
Speaker 2 (34:09):
the same color yeah,
100, 100.
Yeah, I mean, would I would Isay that color is my favorite
color for a 964 what is yourfavorite?
Color for a 964 oh, it'sdefinitely right up there.
(34:29):
Like it's right right up there.
I love amethyst.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
I freaking adore
amethyst oh, that's like the
like, the sort of deep purpleyone.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah exactly.
I love that colour.
Yeah, darren Pfister's car isamethyst and it just looks
stunning.
I love that.
Yeah, that's probably myfavourite factory colour.
I mean, I love Ruby Stone.
I don't know that I could driveone, though.
I love mint.
I think mint is just phenomenal.
I love mint.
I think mint is just phenomenal.
(34:58):
Mint is mint.
Yeah, mint is mint.
But no, I adore my car and Ithink I've said to you before
that when I was first lookingthis was kind of when I was
buying the car, it was a littlebit before green was, yeah,
green's kind of enjoying, let'ssay, a surge in popularity these
(35:20):
days.
Yeah, this was pre that, and I'dseen the car listed on a local
forum and I'd I'd kind of beenuncertain as to whether or not
it was right and and so much sothat I showed kath and she was
like, oh, green, and I was like, okay, cool, so I just literally
immediately discounted it andsat on it for weeks and then
(35:41):
nothing else had come up and Iwent back to it and it looked as
though it was no longer forsale.
And then the thread kind ofreopened and just as I was about
to, I was literally typing amessage to the seller to say hey
, you still interested inselling?
And I showed it to Kath againand she's like oh yeah, that
looks pretty good.
And dude, honestly, as soon asI saw it I know I've told this
(36:02):
story before, but as soon as Isaw I knew I was buying it the
green I just loved it and, andand.
Honestly, if I tell you, I wouldlove to get a gt3 touring in
forest green metallic and havelike matching I just I just
think that would be amazing yeah, that would be pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
As much as I, as much
as I really love my, uh,
whatever, whatever, mine isgraphite, blue, metallic um I do
miss having a really bold colorlike bluey was.
I was just yeah yeah, blue wasa great color, I was just
looking at photos of it theother day as it popped up on my
screensaver and, uh, I justthought oh, wow, I loved, I love
(36:44):
seeing that color in my, in my,uh, in my garage.
That's the dream, though, isn'tit?
Multiple cars, big garage, multiple cars, let's do it do
you like?
Speaker 2 (36:54):
do you have a kind of
like, a go-to color?
You know, when you're on theconfigurator, like or go-to
colors?
I should say um, yeah, it's,it's usually black, it's right
unfortunately boring, boring andboring um oh no, black's great,
I love black but yeah, it is.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
It is usually black
so my go-to.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
I love, love Carmine
Red in the standard.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
Oh yeah, that's a
nice color.
Speaker 2 (37:18):
I think it's such a
great color.
But if I ever go paint a sample, I always go to Oratium Green.
I just love that color.
I just think it's so, so good,so good.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
Do you find that you,
just like you, have a tendency
to veer towards the greens?
Because overall, I think inlife I have a tendency to
levitate towards blue.
And, by the way, for thoselistening, Andy is sat here in a
green hoodie.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
Yeah, that's quite a
fluke.
And you know, today I waswearing a green and blue kind of
plaid shirt.
You know, I don't know.
Historically, no, although Iremember being a kid and seeing
you know old mid-70s G-bodies in, you know, I guess like Python
green or like Condor green orwhatever some of those colors
(38:13):
were, and just thinking, wow, yeah, they looked amazing.
So I've definitely always likedgreen cars.
I couldn't, for example, Idon't think I could drive a
yellow car.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
Yeah, me too.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
I like a yellow car.
I love them.
Whenever anyone I know has one,I love it.
I love looking at them on theroad.
I adore them.
I just don't think I would haveone.
So yeah, maybe I go for greensa bit.
I do.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
I like grays as well
so actually same for me with um
lava orange.
You know like I love thatporsche lava orange color, um
yeah, but I don't know if Icould have that every day.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
No, I couldn't have
it.
I couldn't have it, hey.
Um, now, speaking of damage tocars and rallies and such I did,
I can't remember.
I can't remember what our lastpod was prior to our last break,
but do I need to check this?
(39:13):
I don't know.
I think I'm right in saying Inever spoke about the Mega Loop
Rally, right?
The what rally?
The Mega Loop Rally.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Okay, well, we can
edit this out, if I did.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
Yeah, okay.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
I'll check afterwards
.
So Alpine Range Rally numbernine happened in I think I want
to say the end of March, andthree days before it I injured
my back like really bad.
Right, I remember To the pointwhere I knew it was very
unlikely that I was going to go.
I did everything I could to getmyself in a position where I
(39:52):
could go, but it just wasn'tpossible.
So the day of the rally Ipulled out, I was gutted,
devastated, didn't get to go onthe rally that I planned with my
mate Rocco.
Anyway, I kind of thenselfishly afterwards, somebody
just kind of said in ourWhatsApp chat something about
(40:14):
gee, I wonder what you could doin a day or something to that
effect, and I thought I wonderwhat I could do in a day.
I wonder if there is a goodportion of our alpine range
rally that could be done in onemassive day.
So I started, I got on googlemaps.
(40:35):
I got on Google Maps, I got onScenic and started planning what
became the Megaloop Rally, which was a single-day rally
that we did in April, and it wasincredible.
Speaker 1 (40:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Absolutely incredible
.
So we all drove to.
There's a place in Victoriacalled Bright which is where we
usually stay on the second nightof our rally.
But Bright is at the base ofthe Alpine region, so it's a
beautiful kind of starting spot.
And so we all drove up there.
(41:10):
On the Friday, some people droveafter work, got there late at
night, some people, like myself, kind of drove, left at lunch
time and just cruised up therebut still managed a good drive.
And in fact I drove up with mybuddy, erwin, and he had his
991.2 gts and when we were nottoo far from bright, that's
where we did a car swap to drivehis car on some amazing roads
(41:34):
too, by the way way.
So it was a fantasticexperience to actually give that
car a proper run.
And then on the Saturdaymorning we got up early and then
did this massive, massive dayof most of the best roads from
day two and three of our rallythat we typically do.
(41:56):
We managed to get them done ina single day and so I think
there were eight or nine of uswho did the the trip in total.
And you know we left bright at6 30 in the morning and just
went for it.
I said to everyone, I said, listen, it's gonna be one of
those days where it's it's a lotof driving.
So, yes, let, yes, let's stop.
If you get tired, if you'refeeling fatigued, then
(42:18):
absolutely I don't want anyonedriving in that condition.
But equally, you know stops aregoing to be quite short.
I didn't do all of the usualorganising of you know places to
eat and all that sort of stuff.
We knew where the towns were, that we'd have access to food
and that was it.
And then we, just being a smallgroup, as well.
(42:40):
We just went for it.
Yeah, man, it was.
It's one of my favorite daysdriving I've ever had, not
notwithstanding a lot ofkangaroos.
We really man, I came so closeto running over a kangaroo.
I we're on this super tighttwisty road that heads towards a
(43:00):
place called mita mita, and mypal uh alan was behind me and he
saw it happen.
This kangaroo kind of camebouncing up from the side of the
road and they're crossing infront of my car oh man and I was
, and and dude, I was lit uparound this corner too.
I was going for it and I wasjust full brakes, all of the
(43:22):
antiquated ABS kicked in all ofit, and you know, when you're
trying to miss something andyou're like you sort of hoik
yourself up in your seat.
Speaker 1 (43:32):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
To kind of see over
the bonnet more to see if the
stupid critter is going to clearit or not, and somehow this
kangaroo just got past me.
I still to this day don't knowhow.
That was amazing.
But then yeah, this road toMittermitte, which I'd only
driven once before and I'ddriven it in you know know six
(43:55):
degrees and pissing rain, todrive it in the sunshine and
just with this group of seven oreight of us, whatever it was,
it was just phenomenal and thisroad goes on and on and on.
It is so long and it undulates,it's up, it's down, it's open,
(44:16):
it's tight, it's technical.
It is just such an incredibleroad.
And then that was, you know, just one of a bunch of amazing
roads we drove that day and, best of all, I pulled in to my
driveway at home, 5 30 pmsaturday afternoon oh, wow and
had had dinner with the familyand then the next day at home
(44:40):
doing stuff.
In fact, kath and I jumped inlittle green.
The next day, on sunday, droveto a winery and had lunch and I
felt like I'd been away for aweek oh, that's really cool,
just amazing, and so I yeah, andI think everyone who went was
like this is a really differentway to do it, but God it worked
(45:00):
so well.
Speaker 1 (45:00):
So are you going to
do that again?
Have you got one coming up?
Speaker 2 (45:04):
I think we will.
I mean, we've got Alpine RangeRally happening in November,
which is number 10, and it's thefirst time we're going to
actually stretch the rally, runan extra day and there's a whole
lot.
First time we're going toactually stretch the rally, run
an extra day and there's a wholelot of places we're going to go
that we've never been before.
But I think I think this kind ofapproach is one where you can
(45:27):
kind of decide almost lastminute yeah just sneak it in,
hey, who can get away from worka little bit early on friday, as
long as we can getaccommodation accommodations,
the hard part because Bright'sactually really popular so
that's tricky, so we might needto find a different base to stay
.
But yeah, I think we'll do itagain for sure.
Speaker 1 (45:46):
It was a good way to
do it, nice.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
And kind of took less
domestic credit, if that makes
sense.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
Yeah, totally,
totally, Well, Andy.
Video of the week.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
We've got one thing
video of the week, because we
did.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
you've seen this
right, I actually saw video of
the week this week and it'sabuse.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
I mean so the video
is called.
It's actually on a channelcalled Soulful Machines and 100%
I'd say to you, go check outtheir content.
They've got some really greatstuff.
They've only got a little over1,000 subscribers at the moment
and they deserve way more thanthat and I'm sure they'll have a
lot more than that soon.
(46:27):
And this video is called thePorsche 924, the perfect getaway
car, and it's part of a seriescalled we Drive.
It's episode two in that series.
How good is it to see a 924 ina piece of video content?
Speaker 1 (46:42):
yeah, yeah, you know
I suppose we're booking the
trend a little bit here bytalking about jay's car.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
Well, it's a
transaxle car, it's a it's rear
drive front engine car.
Yeah, you're.
Speaker 1 (46:54):
Yeah, transaxle car.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
I tell you, the thing
I love about it is something
like a 924.
You know, it's the unlovedPorsche, no doubt, and I just
love the way it's presented inthis film.
This girl's driving it and it'sdone in the way that some of
the Petrolicious films were doneand the like, with gorgeous
(47:16):
cinematography.
The car looks fantastic andthere's no.
I feel like the 924 is one ofthose cars that people feel they
need to be apologetic about, oryeah, I've only got a 924.
You know what I mean?
It's that sort of a car, whereasthis video doesn't take that
approach at all.
It's like this car is amazing,it's my favorite thing in the
(47:39):
world and I yeah, I just, I justloved it.
Speaker 1 (47:42):
I absolutely loved it
yeah, I, I love the way that um
the sort of the interlacing ofthe driving, the car experience
and the girl getting up andgoing for a jog and sort of
experiencing nature and gettingout and driving, um, the whole
kind of adventure and it thatwas so cool.
And the the content quality, the whole sort of production
(48:06):
quality was epic yeah, yeah, 100.
Speaker 2 (48:09):
And exactly as you
say, I love that thing of.
Yeah, it wasn't just about thecar, the car is this, you know,
beautiful 924, but it's also herconnection, her thing, that
gets her out into these amazingforests and out doing other
stuff that she loves.
I just yeah.
Speaker 1 (48:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
Very, very, very,
very cool.
Speaker 1 (48:28):
You found another
winner there, Andy.
Good job.
Speaker 2 (48:30):
Well, I will share it
on our Instagram, and with that
, I think you need to go andplug yourself in via intravenous
drip to some of your.
Minnesota brown.
Just get some of that stuffflowing through your veins.
Speaker 1 (48:46):
I will.
Speaker 2 (48:48):
And yeah, get your
day started.
Speaker 1 (48:49):
I will, and thank you
everybody for checking in for
another episode of Curb andCanyon.
There'll be more content comingsoon.
I'm James from Auto Amateur atAuto Amateur.
This is Andy from Last Rasp, and we are Andy and James at
Curb and Canyon.
Speaker 2 (49:07):
See you soon, guys,
take care.
