Welcome back to DadDimes on the Rocks! Today, we’re diving into one of the most sought-after and boldest bourbons out there—Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel Bourbon with our special guest’s, Ernesto and Joe.  If you love high-proof, unfiltered whiskey straight from the cask, this is a bottle worth talking about. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype!

The Story Behind Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel

Blanton’s, produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery, is famous for being the first-ever single barrel bourbon, introduced by Elmer T. Lee in 1984. While Blanton’s Original is already highly regarded, Straight from the Barrel (SFTB) takes it to another level by offering cask-strength power without dilution or filtration.

This means each barrel’s proof varies, typically ranging from 120 to 135 proof, delivering an uncut, full-flavored experience straight from the aging warehouse.

Key Details

  • Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • Proof: Varies per barrel, usually between 120-135 proof (60-67.5% ABV)
  • Mash Bill: Buffalo Trace’s Mash Bill #2 (higher rye, estimated 12-15%)
  • Age: No official statement, but typically 6-8 years
  • Distillery: Buffalo Trace, Frankfort, Kentucky

Bottle Presentation

Blanton’s is always known for its iconic round bottle and racehorse topper, but SFTB takes it to another level. The label is handwritten with the barrel details, giving it a more personalized, exclusive feel. The deep, rich amber color inside hints at the powerhouse whiskey waiting for you.

Tasting Notes

Nose

A big, bold aroma packed with caramel, toasted oak, vanilla, and dark fruit. Hints of cinnamon, black pepper, leather, and tobacco remind you that this is a high-proof beast.

Palate

Intense and full-bodied right from the start! The caramel and butterscotch sweetness hit first, followed by spicy rye, oak, and dark chocolate. The heat from the high proof is noticeable but balances well with the deep, rich flavors. Mid-palate, you’ll pick up on dried cherries, roasted nuts, and a touch of espresso bitterness.

Finish

Long, warm, and complex, with lingering spice, charred oak, and dark fruit. The cask strength intensity stays with you, making each sip a slow, rewarding experience.

How Does It Compare?

Compared to Blanton’s Original (93 proof), SFTB is a whole different animalbolder, richer, and way more intense. It shares similarities with Blanton’s Gold, but the uncut, raw nature of SFTB makes it the most powerful expression in the lineup.

If you love high-proof bourbons like George T. Stagg or Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, this is right up your alley.

Best Ways to Enjoy
