Niccolò Machiavelli, in the 16th century, served as an advisor to powerful families and governments, observing firsthand the brutal realities of power. His writings rejected the idealism of morality-based politics in favor of cold, calculated strategy. For Machiavelli, the survival of the state and the strength of its leader outweighed any personal virtue or ethical concern.
His most infamous work, The Prince, published in 1532, is a pragmatic guide for rulers who wish to maintain power at any cost. It has endured not because it flatters our ideals, but because it dares to expose the shadow side of power. These are the 12 Principles of Machiavelli’s The Prince.
