In Genesis 40, Joseph—still imprisoned—interprets the dreams of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker, foretelling restoration for one and death for the other. Though Joseph pleads to be remembered, the cupbearer forgets him, leaving Joseph in waiting.
Two years later in Genesis 41, Pharaoh is troubled by dreams of cows and grain. The cupbearer finally recalls Joseph, who is summoned to interpret the visions. Joseph reveals that Egypt will face seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Impressed by his wisdom and humility, Pharaoh elevates Joseph to second-in-command, entrusting him with Egypt’s survival.
