Have you ever wondered how an ordinary rock in a cardboard box could make someone a millionaire? In this nostalgic trip back to 1975, we explore the bizarre phenomenon of the Pet Rock, perhaps the strangest fad that swept America during the mid-seventies.

As a 14-year-old when this craze hit, I share what I remember and what my Google search returned.  What began as a bar conversation about the hassles of pet ownership evolved into a cultural touchstone that perfectly captured America's sense of humor and consumer habits. These weren't just rocks—they came in custom cardboard boxes with ventilation holes and straw bedding, complete with a training manual. At just under $4 each, with a 95-cent profit margin, Dahl transformed ordinary Mexican stones into must-have companions and himself into a millionaire within six months.

The Pet Rock offers us a fascinating case study in marketing brilliance. Despite lasting only half a year as a mainstream phenomenon, its cultural impact endured, even earning a reference in the cult classic film "Office Space." More surprisingly, the Pet Rock has found new life in recent years—purchased by toy company Super Impulse in 2022 and gaining popularity in South Korea as a meditation tool. Today, you can still buy one on Amazon for $29.99, seven times its original price. As we concluded during lunch with friends, "You're only one good idea away from being a millionaire." Maybe this quirky slice of American pop culture history will inspire your own million-dollar concept!

If you're around in 1975 andreally if you were a teenager,
here we go.
I told some guys I was sittingat lunch with today that I'm

(00:47):
going to do an episode on this.
Our conversation had somehowtaken us to talking about the
pet rock.
Now you might be askingyourself what in the world is a
pet rock?
Well, in 1975, I was 14 yearsold and the Pet Rock was a fad
for about six months, and peoplewere scooping these things up

(01:10):
and buying them.
They were created by anadvertising executive, gary Dahl
.
They were packaged in thiscustom cardboard box with
ventilation holes and strawbedding.
According to Wikipedia in caseyou're just interesting and
knowing about the pet rock, garycame up with the idea while he
was in a bar listening to hisfriends complain about their

(01:34):
pets.
This gave him the idea for thepet rock.
A rock would not need to be fed, fed, walked, bathed or groomed
.
It would not die, become sickor be disobedient.
He decided it was the perfectpet and he joked with his

(01:57):
friends before producing petrocks as toys in 1975.
Now, as I said, these thingsstuck around for about six
months, but, believe it or not, they were just under $4 during
their initial release, produceda 95 cents profit on each unit,
and thus Gary became amillionaire.

(02:19):
If you've ever seen the movieOffice Space, you know there's a
scene in there that refers tothe Pet Rock.
When one of the gentlemendecides he has an idea, he wants
to invent a jump to conclusionsgame, well, his co-workers are
quick to point out that's thestupidest idea I've ever heard.

(02:41):
Oddly for the Pet Rock, eventhough it only lasted about six
months in popularity, in 2022,the toy company Super Impulse
purchased the rights to the rockand revived the brand.
Pet Rocks grew in popularity inSouth Korea for tools for
meditation or venting outfrustrations.

(03:02):
I have to ask myself werepeople squeezing the rocks or
were they throwing at peoplethat they were frustrated with?
A little bit of trivia therefor you?
Oh, you might be askingyourself where did these rocks
come from?
Well, the majority of them camefrom Mexico.
It's funny what you'll look upwhen you're sitting at lunch

(03:22):
with friends and somebodymentions something About that
time somebody else chimed in.
You know you're only one goodidea away from being a
millionaire.
We all decided, hey, that wouldbe a good T-shirt.
We all made a note of it.
We'll see which one of usproduces a T-shirt first.
Well, I hope you've enjoyed thislittle history lesson of the

(03:44):
Pet Rock first.
