name fits of fury and hearts of gold.
Every story, every fight retold tales of glory life.
You cry 10 sea warriors with hearts open wide.
(00:30):
In the rain, on the air, they just living without a cave on
the mine, they roared on the map, they saw dangerous
conversations, fans wanting move.
Our guys came through the way ifit's the Slipperies in the
(00:54):
state. Hey everybody.
Welcome back once again to Dangerous Conversations with
Dangerous, Doug Gilbert and Tommy Wildfire.
Rich guys, we've made it throughanother week and it's time to
sit down and talk some wrestling.
Again, man, it's curious Gene and I'm sure happy to be here
(01:17):
and I'm sure Tommy is also and everything.
And man, I can't wait to get into some stories that you want
to talk about tonight. And hey man, it's been rainy and
rainy and rainy and rainy and Myrtle Beach.
But today it is beautiful laid out by the pool a little bit,
had a couple of coolers, lights, mountains was blue.
(01:38):
Let me tell you, Myrtle Beach Mountains blue.
It's good to hear, good to hear from y'all.
Good to be here. Hey, to all the fans out there,
man, it's just a pleasure man. I always love looking forward to
every show we do. Listen, we got coming up, I know
Gene knows a a ton of stuff as far as dates and stuff, but we
got Mayfield Mayhem, Mayfield, Kentucky.
(01:59):
Tommy, I know you've been in Kentucky a lot lately, but I
hadn't been in Kentucky in probably five years.
I cannot wait to get back to Mayfield and it'll be myself.
You will be in a big tag match and then we'll have none other
than Jerry the King Law will be there with us.
Tommy has to be a big night in Mayfield, shouldn't it?
Somebody say somebody. Hey, that is the start of the
(02:22):
trip too, man. Mayfield, Kentucky.
Been wrestling a lot up there with wildfire championship
racing on the other side of Kentucky.
But hey, Mayfield, Kentucky, that's the area.
We started out an idea back withNick Douglas and Jerry Jared.
They were promoting this stuff. And we go way up in the old
Kentucky hills. Man has just met some of the
(02:43):
finest folk you ever come across.
I'm really excited. Hey, and there's some big match.
There's going to be a big show there too.
And from there and they, like you said, Jerry King, Lawler
going to be there. Hey, I'm allowed to jump on the
hill. Hey, back in the day, though,
back in the day, we turned his back.
I jump on. Him and say June, June, that's
(03:05):
June 12th, right? That's right, June the 12th
Mayfield Mayhem right there for Pro Wrestling Entertainment.
Got that going on. And then that's not all.
That's going to be a a big weekend for you guys because.
But to all the folks, it's goingto be there.
We'll be there early outside andlike a little meet and greet I
think they're having before the show.
(03:27):
We'll be outside and pictures, taking pictures, shaking hands,
whatever you want. If you want to meet dangerous,
Doug Gilbert, Tommy Wildfire, Rich, we'll be there early.
We'll be out shaking hands, signing autographs.
Just you know, y'all come out, man.
It's going to be a good family, family oriented thing.
And in Mayfield, KY, that's where I started and hopefully
(03:49):
everybody passed away, but theirkids is there.
You know, I'm a dinosaur now, man.
So when I go to these towns and they smoke folks and still
talking wildfire rich man, that, you know, it's a blessing.
And I always get excited about going to these towns.
And then then Jane, the next twodays when Metropolis, the
Superman thing, I'm looking forward to seeing all the
(04:11):
characters, folks dressed up, you know, don't you?
I'm in his house, man. He got a Batmobile.
They got a Superman statue. I mean, if there's anybody into
the Marvels, King is. And yes, it's going to be a good
weekend there, Metropolis. But I'm really excited about
Mayfield, KY. Jim, would you say Tommy would
(04:34):
be AT Rex or, or what would he be?
I think I think that would be fair.
You know, it's, it's it's wild, though.
Like Gary Lawler is the king of Memphis.
What's that? You'd be you'd be T Rex.
You got a little short arms. That's that's fair.
I've seen G walking through thatAtlanta airport.
(04:56):
He didn't even look like he had no arm.
That's 'cause he was running like OJ.
Hey, jeez, said it. Jeez, said that.
That ain't even funny. No, that was last week.
We've moved on from that, Tommy,We're.
Not even talking about anything.Hey now, last week I felt sorry
for you. This week, I'm going to tell the
(05:17):
whole story. Oh boy.
Well, let's let's hang on our toour seat for that one.
But see, I was about to put you over.
I was about to say that Jerry Lawler is the king of Memphis
and you're the king of Kentucky. But now, I don't know, man,
maybe, maybe I'll just let you let you put yourself over.
But man, Metropolis, the 13th and the fourth thing.
So there you go, 12th, 13th, 14th, Big weekend for the
(05:40):
Memphis Mafia. You guys are going to be on the
road and getting the opportunityto meet with a lot of great fans
up there, so that's exciting. And Gene, it's cool to me.
I don't know, Tommy, he's probably wrestled in Metropolis
for, but actually I haven't. This will be my first time
coming Metropolis and I'm looking forward to it.
And I'm a big Superman fan also. They tell me everything that
(06:04):
goes on up there has got something to do with Superman.
And I mean, there's supposed to be a ton of people up there and
a ton of people signing stuff and a lot of different things to
see and everything. So it's going to be exciting
time for me up there. Like I said Friday, Saturday
also. Very cool stuff, folks.
Make sure you come and check it out and if you want any more
(06:25):
details, you can go to our Facebook page, which is once
again, it says Dangerous Conversations with Tommy, Doug
Gilbert and Tommy Rich. We got that straightened out
finally, Doug, I didn't get to tell you that that was.
The last one. Everything is back as it was
there on the Facebook page. And Speaking of the Facebook
page, we've added some videos from our Philadelphia trip.
(06:47):
18,000 people have looked at thevideo of Doug and and the Meanie
talking and Meanie showing that picture of you and him and Eddie
in 1991. What?
Did he he tell us he was 18? Then or something?
Yes, sure did. And that was 94. 91 trip to
Memphis in, 91 there. So.
(07:11):
A lot of people's looked at that, but a lot of people,
20,000 people so far have lookedat the video of Tommy and his
former tag team partner Tony Atlas sitting around telling
some stories about when they were tag team partners.
Tony tells the story of how Tommy became Wildfire and how he
set the the northern part of theterritory on fire up there.
(07:33):
So I thought, well, people are interested in it right now, what
better time just to take a little bit of time on this
episode and talk a little bit about the tag team of Tommy Rich
and Tony Atlas. Tommy, what can you tell us?
What are your memories of first meeting Tony Atlas when he came
to Georgia? Well, my first dealings with
county is I had a little family problem.
(07:59):
So Jerry, Jerry got me booked inGeorgia and he told me, he said
if you get there, you don't likeit.
He said I'll tell Mister Barn there's something, just get you
out gracefully. See.
Anyway, I get there. I had me a long velvet red white
velvet roll babe, you know, thought I was speaking to go by
Big Boo. Anyway, only Anderson was a damn
(08:22):
Booker and he's a Booker and a booger Bo, you know, that's a
nice word for a booger. But anyway, and only took me and
told me he said thank you and hesaid you going to go out there
and after we're going to beat you in 30 seconds, you going to
bleed Tony Adams going to come save you, boy.
(08:45):
I'm going to go call J&J right now.
Anyway. I went out there and but then
people went crazy. When they see me.
They went crazy. I don't know.
It's kind of like Elvis, I reckon.
I don't know. They never, they never seen
nothing like you had. No, no, these all big guys and
(09:07):
stuff and I just had that blondehair and and, but anyway, yeah,
I went out and had little baby. I said I'll wear my head down
between my legs and feed and charge yourself.
And anyway, I didn't tell me. He said I'll give it back to you
one day, kid. I thought, yeah, right, you
(09:29):
know, so. But anyway, see out of that, I
sit over and Tony Abbas come up to me.
He he talked to me and he said don't worry about it, don't
worry about it. And then of course, he come out
and save me. He had a he was wearing a hood
when the hood come off. So anyway, they ended up taking
us together and we won the tag belts and we ran about 3 or 4
(09:53):
years there and enjoy, you know,in Georgia and in what nothing.
They're there no hotter than we were.
I mean they had different anglescome through drawing money, but
we was hot. I mean we was like of course,
and then you figure back then, Imean they said come as Georgia.
They said they still had a sign that said that word don't let
(10:17):
the sun sit on your ass. We supposed to went to you.
Not much me about telling when Iwas supposed to wrestling come
as Georgia and me and Tony always went together and he told
me he said I'm going to drive upbrother.
He said I'm going to drive up toCummings.
I didn't think that bad when he told him he wasn't coming
(10:37):
because that's sad. And so anyway, anyway, I get to
the matches, only looks at me. He said where's Tony at?
I said I don't know. I said he said he was going to
drive up here. He started saying that GD word.
He said he ain't coming. Sure enough, Tony didn't come
(10:58):
either. Yeah, but blame.
Him. But and then, but like at the
airport, you know, I had my first two babies and he would
put one on each shoulder. I mean, Tony was like family.
And you know, I, you know, I mean, he had his ups and downs
and you know, but he was always good to me and good to my
(11:20):
family, you know. So I mean, just a just a great
guy that got me opened up. I mean, you know, I mean, I
might have never got a break. We had to be the first salt,
Pepper, the tag team, you know, I mean, but we just click good
together. I was little cornbread, little
cornbread kid. He missed the USA.
So it was a good combination. Kind of like Jerry, Jerry, Tojo,
(11:43):
Yamamoto, you know, it's just a good combination.
Oh, Jay would have been Tojo. I see him.
I see him living around selling that foot.
Oh, Tommy, you shut your mouth with.
(12:05):
That old with that old side facetold your mate.
Oh, if I had them wooden shoes they wore, I'll sure enough I'll
have my foot blistered if I'd have been walking through
Atlanta and them things. I don't know, you might have
been better off in the room with.
(12:28):
So, so it's been popular in the past when we've kind of went
through and read results from different shows you guys were
on. So I thought, well, let's go
through and take a look at some of the shows you and Tony were
on, give you guys an opportunityto talk about some of these
different people on the shows, comment on some of the matches
and you talked about you and Tony becoming tag team
champions. Well, September the 9th, 1977,
(12:49):
you guys were in the Georgia tagteam title tournament in Atlanta
at the Municipal Auditorium. So let's go through some of the
matches that night. Opening match of the tournament
and we'll be interested to see if you know who this is.
Richard Blood and Stephen LittleBear defeated Dick Slater and
Jacques Goulet. Do you know who Richard Blood
was at the time? Yeah, he was.
(13:10):
Standing. Over.
He was thinking that he would think that.
He was your roommate, Tyler. Yeah, me and him live together.
See it Solis was his real name. Then he come Tito, Savor,
Richard Blood then went up thereand was Tito sent down?
Yeah, but yeah, me and him livedtogether.
(13:33):
See, that's what's that's what'sweird.
Doug Richard Blood. Richard Blood was Ricky
Steinbutt's real name, and for some reason when Tito came to
Georgia, he adopted the name Richard Blood as his ring.
Barnett did that for a reason. OK, Is that who gave it to him?
All right, well, that makes moresense then.
And he actually took on that name.
So a lot of times when people goback and look at old results,
(13:54):
they assume that that was Ricky Steamboat.
That's the same reason you did, because that was Steamboat's
name, but it actually was PO Santana.
I was fixing to say I guess he Iwas going to say I guess he used
actually his real name, but but he did he ever use that name or
no? I think he did when he first
went to the Carolinas Before before, I guess it was, oh gosh,
(14:17):
whoever was Booker at the time, I'm.
John Ringling. Scott Right.
It was Ringling or or one of theScotts said that, you know, they
had had big success with Sam Steamboat in there a year or two
prior and wanted to, you know. Probably.
Probably George Scott. Probably George Scott.
Exactly. I remember seeing that in a
Ricky Steamboat documentary thathe got that name there.
(14:38):
But he did do a handful of matches.
Richard Blood. And they were like, that's not a
babyface. Like we can't, we can't call it
a babyface. Richard Blood.
And who else was in it? Yeah, it is actually.
Richard Blood's a good babyface name.
Indian. I mean, you know.
Well, yeah, team was Stephen Little Bear.
That was his partner with Stephen Little Bear and they
defeated Dick Slater and JacquesRene Goulet, who would later be
(15:01):
one of the Legionnaires with thefuture Don Fargo.
Don. Fargo.
There's a fun name, right? So then in the second match of
the tournament, Tommy Wildfire, Rich and Tony Atlas.
Now listen to this team defeatedDino Bravo and Don Carnoto.
(15:21):
What do you remember about thoseguys, Tommy?
Well, God bless Dino, man. He was.
I mean, you talk about it for real.
I tell you he was a for real. Good night.
Did I tell you, you know, I meanmy brief time I was with him, he
was a bad I mean he was he was abad ass and and and hack work
(15:44):
about do anything you ask him todo.
But at the end of the day, you know, I mean, God bless him.
I know he's gone now, but he wasa wild man.
Well, you know, a lot of people are going to remember the the
1990s blonde haired, big muscledup, huge muscled up Dino Bravo.
But in this era, 1977, he was a lot smaller guy.
(16:08):
He moved around the ring, did a lot of scientific wrestling.
This is a completely different guy you wrestled in 77 than what
most people are picturing when they hear the name Dino Bravo,
right? Well, damn.
Well, I guess I Yeah, I picturedDino Bravo, Yeah.
I mean, he, he wasn't, he was, he hadn't found the steroids in
77. He wasn't the world's strongest
man at that point. What you.
(16:28):
No. No.
Sir, he wasn't even Canada's strongest man at that point, but
any memories of Don Kernodle? Oh, Don Man.
Yeah, him and his brother. What he gets brother wildly,
man, that was in Georgia only love doctor.
No, and but I had dogs, dog and wrestlers.
(16:50):
But tail off. I mean, he was good.
He just didn't have that hit factor, you know?
But he, yeah, he was a heck of awrestler.
Next match in the tournament. Now listen to this one.
Here's a heck of a match. The Andersons, Gene and Ollie
Anderson defeated Dusty Rhodes and Thunderbolt Patterson.
(17:12):
How over was Thunderbolt at thattime in in 77?
Tommy, he was a pretty big deal at that point, right?
And Dusty's just now coming along in 77.
Yeah, I mean, just Thunderbolt was hard to get along with, you
know, I mean, he, but he, I mean, he put butts in.
That mean butts was in the seats.
They can't. Yes, you're right.
(17:33):
He was over like a son of a God.Yes, Sir.
Next match, Pack Song and the Executioner defeated Bill White
and Randy Savage. So you know Bill White would
later go on to be was it Radomius?
I think so. How you pronounce that name?
(17:54):
He he did an ICW did a little bit in Memphis too.
And then Pack Song. You know, a Asian heel, if you
will. But you know, the Executioner is
here, Tommy. No, this one is not.
It's Bob Remus AKA Sergeant Slaughter.
(18:16):
Is that right? Yes, Sir.
Look that up and then confirm that.
So that's that's the to think that Sergeant Slaughter's team
with pack song here. That's pretty interesting tag
team, so. Yeah, you ain't like so going
into the cinema. Yeah, go ahead, Tommy.
I'm just going to say PAC Saw, Iwrestled him when he was managed
(18:38):
by Rock Hunter Man and I had some, I had some good, managed
to draw money with him. He was a character too.
PAC Saw was. And he got a lot of heat back in
the day, right? I mean, that was a pretty.
Oh yeah, yeah. Which one?
Which one of y'all come up with his name?
Rock Hunter. So in the semifinals, Tommy and
(19:07):
Tony Atlas defeated Danny LittleBear and and Richard Blood AKA
Tito Santana, and then in the next semifinal match, Pack Song
and the Executioner. I was kind of surprised this
Patton Song and Executioner Sergeant Slaughter defeated the
Andersons Gina Notley to advanceinto the tournament into the
finals where Tommy and Tony defeated Pack Song and the
(19:29):
Executioner to win the Georgia Tag Team titles in the
tournament that night. I need to get a copy of that to
Sergeant Slaughter. I beat him.
It sounds like they got their money's worth out of Tommy that
night. Didn't.
It. And they did.
I felt like one of them. Eddie Marlin.
My God, I'm trying to say that. I've been saying that's Eddie
(19:52):
Marlin show there. Was Doug supposed to be your
partner that night, Tommy? I don't.
Know where Doug was. So so you guys were going to
drop those titles that was on the ninth.
You guys were going to drop those titles on the 16th back to
Pack Song and the Executioner. So short lived title reign
(20:12):
there. But then on November the 15th in
Macon, GA. Now here's an interesting card
opening match, Jerry Stubbs defeated Ted Allen.
Talk about Jerry Stubbs quite a bit on the show.
What do you guys remember about Ted Allen the Nightmare?
Oh, Ted, Ted, I mean, he was, hewas good.
(20:33):
He did the nightmare thing with Danny.
I think, you know, after Kenny Payne went out where whatever
happened to him? But anyway, yeah.
But but Ted was Ted was good. He brought, you know, he held
the ring. He wrestled whatever they need
him to do. He did.
I mean, he was, he was, he was one of them.
You don't see that no more. You know, the these guys today,
(20:57):
they don't know nothing about none of that.
Ted Allen, he was, he was straight.
I mean, he was a utility man. Yeah.
And I mean, there's two great wrestlers.
I mean, Jerry says he was a great worker for, I mean,
wherever you wanted to use him. At he went to.
Jerry. You talk about Jerry, he went on
to did the Mr. Olympic thing andhe Continental, you know, I
(21:19):
mean. Yeah, he.
Dropped some money. Yeah, for, for Watts in
Louisiana, he was really over. I mean really over as a babyface
and really over as a heel also. And I mean.
Yeah, tagged with JYD and kind of did the work for for JYD
until JYD kind of came along. So, right, I mean, he was the
Louisiana heavyweight champion. Yeah.
I mean, he actually done more stuff, I think that people
(21:41):
really realized. And under the hood is Mr.
Olympia, like you said, he was partners with JYD and I mean,
they was like the top tag team down there for a good while.
I mean drew a lot of money. Yeah, absolutely.
And there's a lot of that. You can find a lot of that on
like the WWE Network and YouTube, and they were quite the
tag team. And of course, eventually Jerry
(22:02):
turned on him and they had a great feud after that as well.
Yeah, and I mean, like I've toldyou, for G and Jerry taught me a
whole lot. My brother put me in the program
with him, and Jerry was just a good, solid worker.
He could do everything. It wasn't just one thing.
He could do everything well. He's a guy I hope we can get on
the show and talk to eventually.I think we can probably find a
(22:25):
way to get in touch with Jerry and maybe eventually have him
on. I'm, I'm going to tell you if
people like ARN Anderson's work and I think Oren got a lot from
GG and Oren was tag partners before Oren even thought about
Tully coming along, but in Florida and Tommy was around in
(22:46):
and out during that time. I think when, when G and and
Oren was partners, they was likethe IT tag team heel wise down
there. But I mean, I think Oren learned
a whole lot from G. So I mean, people like
Orensworth, they sure like G's worth.
Yeah. Yeah, Arne has given him a lot
(23:07):
of credit over the years and interviews and everything and
said how much that, you know, Jerry shaped him because that
was before he tagged with Olie or any of that.
Now, that was before, before he'd been around anybody in
Georgia or anything. That was just the Florida, the
the Alabama, Florida territory. Continental was Tommy Cows
territory. I wish more footage of that
existed for like around 84 and 85, they did that.
(23:29):
A lot of that's not on tape, butI know Doug, you've talked about
how some of the greatest tag matches you've seen was ARN and
and Jerry Stubbs from that era. So I wish we could see more of
it. It's just.
It just doesn't exist unfortunately.
Yeah, and and people don't realize like, I mean, ARN was
coming along and good, but Jay was the one that, you know, the
leader of the tag team and ARN kind of followed, followed him.
(23:51):
And like I said that Arns arm was really good but I mean G was
the freaking man at that point and everything he was really
good. Like I said I got to work with
him in a program and man you talking about just a smooth and
G was an athlete. I mean you talking about cardio
everything as far as going he could go all night if you wanted
to. And I mean, I really always
(24:13):
respected him a lot. Yeah, if you're listening to
this, if you're not real familiar with Jerry Stubbs or
Mr. Olympia, go out of your way to look him up on YouTube, watch
some of his matches and and you'll you'll be impressed.
Second match on the card that night, Raymond Rougeau defeated
Butch Malone. And so I'm sure this is very
early in the career of Raymond Rougeau.
They felt kind of out of place. I'm sure in in Georgia and 77.
(24:36):
This next match doesn't feel outof place.
Bullet Bob Armstrong defeats Abdullah the Butcher and a
one-on-one match. I'm sure that was next three
matches are pretty interesting. You got Bob defeated Abdullah,
then we got a Georgia tag team title match where Tommy and Tony
Atlas regained. Or let me back up.
(24:58):
Jacques Goulet and Ollie Anderson have now won the
Georgia tag team titles. Tommy and Tony Atlas defeat
Goulet and Ollie to win the Georgia Tag Team titles.
You, Tommy, you wrestled Ollie with just a variety of partners
over the years. And we know, you know, how old
he was to deal with behind the scenes and, you know, could be
kind of a grumpy and, you know, kind of even relate that here.
(25:19):
But how was he to work with in the ring?
Oh, Ollie was, you know, Ollie'sgood.
I mean, I was about drawing money, I mean, and see, but
that's what kept me so good is I'd have me a run in my singles.
I'd do singles and then they bring Wahoo or Tony Atlas or
(25:41):
every who it might be. They would team me up and I'd
have another run. That's the reason I had my
longevity was so good in Georgiabecause I'd do singles and tags,
you know, but kept me pretty fresh.
But but I don't know, he might have been too fresh because
Wahoo left at one time. Yeah, I signed autographs.
(26:04):
He got mad. 2 Pretty Little gals.
I signed the autograph. He went off and left me
Columbus, George. I had to get the plane back.
He didn't pick me up at the airport and I hauled ass and he
just thought I got that down andI shouldn't even win because
it's been his fault. But that's what we did back
(26:25):
then. We just threw anyway.
He thought that was funny shit. Doug, with you being a Tennessee
boy, did you see a lot of the Andersons back in like the late
70s, early, you know, 80s period?
No, no. And, and they only come in here
(26:47):
like two or three times. I remember him coming in here
working and it was freaking. He just wanted to do what he
wanted to do. And I mean in Georgia it was
business like Tommy said and everything, but he didn't give a
crap about this territory here, which I mean, I'm sure he was
(27:08):
business guy, but I think he wasa grumpy fella like pretty much
everybody says and everything. But I say that it's just like he
won a freaking. I wouldn't call it chain
rasling, just like he would wantto grab a hold of like he was in
a they brought one time him and Dusty and it was him and I think
(27:31):
ARN and totally against Lawler, Dusty and maybe Magnum or
something in here one time and man, it just which I don't think
he liked Lawler being over as much as Lawler was over and he
didn't Lawler over shadow them. So he just tried to the whole
match just kind of hold Lawler. It was just kind of a screwed up
(27:51):
deal, but he'd come in another time or two.
But it wasn't never like he, I'mnot sure what they brought him
in for, to be honest, because itwasn't, you know, I've heard
people that have got a lot of respect for him say always
worked hard and everything. But when you come to Memphis, it
wasn't so much that way. So listen, this main event on
this on this event here in Maconmain event, N.W.A Georgia
(28:14):
heavyweight title match, Stan Hanson defeated Dick Slater by
disqualification. That would have been a fun match
to see I feel like. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dig, dig, dig, dig. It dug.
You know, Dick Slider, he was. He was over in Georgia, too.
Yeah, that was that had to be a hell then.
(28:35):
Yeah, and I mean both of them guys are so over time, says
Georgia from Georgia to Japan toeverywhere else, both then when
I I wrestled slavery in Japan and you talking about I've been
in easier fights in the street than than in a couple of those
matches. And he liked me.
I mean, I I I love slavery. I thought he was great like
(28:55):
slavery Murdoch and and those type of guys.
I loved all them guys and got along with them good.
And I got along with slavery real well.
I told Tommy about it before, but being in Japan on tours like
with with them guys for three and four weeks at a time, man,
it's you're talking about a trip, which I mean, I really
idolize those guys and they was really, Slater was one of the
(29:16):
toughest. I mean, you know, a lot of
people don't know that, but he was freaking tough.
What the time? Yeah, digging it.
Yeah, Yeah, I'd say. But Cornett Fuller would had to
two territories there. I've been to smoke man.
I've seen him, Bob Orton get into it.
Yeah, yeah, I got them split up.But yeah, there's what I'm
(29:39):
giving in, yeah. Speaking of how tough Nick
Slater is, there's a famous story from the Bill Watts era.
I know your brother was there, Doug.
I don't know if you would have been around at this point.
This might have been right before you would have come
along. Sting story.
Yeah, that was the year before Istarted.
But I mean, I, I went down therefor the summer, I think of of
(30:02):
when that happened. But, but it's the truth.
I would I mean I talked my brother talked to me about it a
bunch, but he said that he was afraid probably wasn't if it
wasn't for him. It probably went a lot worse
than it did. But yes, slider punched saying a
couple times put put his head inthe toilet and I think Eddie was
(30:23):
telling this don't kill him. So which he wasn't slaughter to
get in trouble, which he wasn't staying to get hurt either, but
somewhere or another his who wasslaver's girlfriend Dark journey
wind up some way with staying and they showed up at the
building and it didn't go very well for Steve from on when and
(30:47):
when you know, The Ultimate Warrior, which was Steve's
partner, was with him, I think at that time, but he wasn't
going to do nothing, which when Slater come in, he brought
Murdoch in with it. I mean they walked in together
and they wasn't nobody going to say nothing to slaver, but he
just missed the beating and likeI said it was bad.
(31:07):
He wound up going and sticking his head in the toilet.
I don't know if y'all actually heard that but.
Yeah, I heard that story. Yeah, but it's the truth that I
mean, it's it is the truth. But I mean, like I said, it was.
I heard Tracy Smothers tell thatstory and he was there.
And that's exactly what he said, that he said if it wasn't for
(31:28):
Eddie, that that would have wentway worse for staying.
That, you know, Eddie knew staying was going to get
something. But that once, you know, he felt
like he got enough, that Eddie was like, OK, you got him.
Just please, just you know. That's enough.
Yeah. Yeah, that's kind of the story I
got out of it. But I mean, I all that is the
(31:49):
truth. It ain't just no folk tale or
anything, but that was and the whole deal lines up.
A lot of things go back to what cut starts, but I'm not saying
it was her fault or nothing, buta woman is.
What about got his clock waxed? Yep, that's how that goes a lot
of times. Well, he's pretty good.
(32:11):
He stuck his head. To talk, yeah, that's.
True, but but what I'm saying isover there you talking about
just funny, but I mean it was just I mean, you know, most of
the guys were tough, but like I said, Slater was one of them
that they said I've heard Steve Kern say before talk about how
tough all the guys was in Florida that come through 80
(32:33):
ground and he said that Slater was the toughest.
So coming through that area, Tommy in Florida, that's when
all them guys was freaking tough, right, All the Briscoes
before that and but he they was talking about if you wanted to
send somebody or IF80 ground wanted anybody to freaking fight
or whatever, he'd send slavery. So that right there says
(32:55):
something on its own. I mean, slavery was like one of
the toughest of all of them justgo and he didn't care.
They said he would just go fightsomebody for no reason.
D tell the story what time when the boy dad, his dad is a big
lawyer and I think he he might have been trying to be a lawyer,
but anyway, he started dating Diggy's ex-girlfriend Diggy or
(33:18):
something. Some have me when Diggy come up
on him and just literally pulledhis hair out of the roots.
I mean, yeah, he didn't. He didn't play Diggy didn't play
a bit. That's rough so.
I believe but but bottom line isgood.
He was a good friend of mine. I mean, you know, maybe he he
(33:40):
stayed in his lane as long as hedidn't make him get out of his
lane, he's cool. Well, yeah, there's a lot of fun
Dick Slater stories out there, folks.
You'll have a lot. Let me give you one.
Let me give you one more. One more fun fact about Dick
Slater. He had a one of Porsche Carreras
or Carnegie, whatever you call it anyway, had a limited
(34:01):
backseat. Well, we was up in Tennessee
wrestling. Speaking of Tony Alice, it was
me, Tony Adams and Dickey and was in his porch.
And so anyway, we're going to a town.
They would buy him 80s and when you go up the country they if
you run across one of the boys they try to throw and make it
(34:22):
blow up under the car. What?
So we passed one of the boys andDiggy throwing them things out,
and me and Tony we laughing our butts off and all of a sudden
digging with someone and hit thedamn side of the car and bounce
back. It blew up.
(34:42):
It blew up in that car. And it was smoke, like cheeky
chow everywhere. Smoke everywhere.
Tony's going TDTD don't be playing.
I mean, it was fun as hell for afew minutes, but when that
happened, Tony, Tony started testifying too.
(35:04):
Yeah. Oh yeah, that thing blown up in
that car. I mean, it was a lie.
Funny. That's awesome.
So we jump ahead a couple years here to October of 1979.
We're not going to go through the whole card here, but there's
a there's some interest, a couple interesting matches here.
Sterling Golden wrestled Stan Hansen to a disqualification.
(35:27):
Hey Jean, I was 9 then. How old were you about?
Four, I was two. I was born in July of 77, so I
was about two years old. So so yeah.
So you guys, so Sterling Gold and Hulk Hogan, the wrestling
Stan Hansen, when he's only likea year or so into the business,
I'm sure that was quite the match up there.
(35:47):
I'm sure that didn't go very well.
I'm sure. It was too because Only Only
didn't like him because he didn't know what to do when so
I'm sure Stan beat the shit out of it.
I I fixed, I'm sure it didn't govery well for Hogan.
Yeah, no, I wouldn't think so. Because yeah, I mean, that's
damn shame if I don't know what to do with him.
He that Hulk Hogan, but anyway, he didn't.
(36:10):
He is what he is. But yeah, he razzled staying.
I'm sure he had a tough night. So then you got a tri-state
North American title match. Mr. Wrestling 2 defeated King
Kong Mosca, so I'm sure that onewas a barn burner.
Listen to this tag team match. Doug, Tommy, Rich and Tony Atlas
(36:31):
defeated Austin Idol and superstar Billy Graham by
disqualification. What A tag team that is.
I bet that was. I bet you had a good match,
Tommy. Would you imagine?
Oh, yeah, I know. It had to be.
I mean, I remember, hey, that's the first time I met superstar
Billy Graham. What if he was very nice to me?
Of course, it was just, hey, howyou doing?
(36:52):
We had a match. But yeah, the match went.
Match went really good. That one had to been Gene after
he left working. For Vance, right, Yeah, yeah.
That would have been after afterthat run up there and you know.
I mean, he'd been the, he'd beenthe WWWF world champion up
(37:12):
there, right? Everything.
Yeah, he'd been world champion up there.
He's still superstar Billy Graham.
This ain't like the 1985 like Kung.
Fu Billy Karate Days. Karate days.
Hey, you're going to pop. But I actually like that.
I mean, I like the the tight eyed I did I I love that.
(37:33):
But I actually are going to laugh at this.
But I like the Kung Fu Billy Graham too.
I thought that was kind of cool.Do you ever say that, Tommy?
Like when he died? Yeah.
Like karate? Pants and and did all the karate
type, you know, all the gesturesanyway, I don't know that he was
a karate master or anything. He ain't that what he done all
(37:54):
those. Oh yeah, He would come out to
that old song everybody was KungFu fighting and he mimicked like
he was like he knew karate. I don't know that Billy Graham
knew a lick of karate, but he definitely he had his head
shaved completely bald and. He had.
Karate pants. And.
Cool. Hey, look at it.
Look at it. I've been biting my tongue this
(38:14):
whole show. I mean, I've been biting my
tongue. So we figured to have a little
mean gene. Now, right now, we think, Gene.
All right, let's let's. OK, say you were sold out, as
Ricky Moore was saying, they were hanging from the Raptors,
Gene told me. That's what they say.
(38:37):
Anyway, hey and you was the mainevent match too I heard.
I did. I closed the show.
I was the last person. I don't know if you and I guess
in comedy terms you call it the main event, but yes, I did close
the show, if you will. I told Gina I've had a lot of
good, A lot of people told me itwas a good night and a good turn
(38:57):
out and everything and and I told Tommy where y'all was at
and I told. Him well, I, I had a lot of
negativity. So anyway, anyway, I need you to
do me, do one of your things. You did do a skit for me.
You can't do you can't just say, hey, tell me a joke on a
freaking podcast. You can't sit down and do stand
(39:19):
up, can you? No.
You can't. I can't tell you.
I have these people cracking by telling the dead gum airport
story. Well, yeah, I told the airport
story last week, but that's the.Difference between telling a?
Story and doing your doing your material on a freaking podcast
and knowing you're not going to sell it no matter what.
It could be the funniest joke ever.
You would sit there stone faced,be like what the fuck?
(39:41):
Jake. No, you can't be on this.
Ladies and gentlemen, my friendsfrom Gaston, Alabama had the
opportunity to fly to Birmingham.
There's a lot of team to fly to Atlanta.
I had walked 40 minutes, could have got on the train, but he
(40:01):
didn't get on the doggone train. Now, I ain't going to bug you,
but yeah, that you could do a you did.
You did tell folks about that, didn't you?
No, no it wasn't. I didn't have.
Enough time to to set all the context to that.
I would have lived up on that stage and had them wondered what
(40:22):
happened. I'm saying I'm going to tell you
what happened to me in this limpfoot.
You get me booked out there in Myrtle Beach somewhere and I'll
come out there and tell that story on.
Stage Why y'all? Why y'all send your questions in
and want some answers? Just ask Gene about his trip to
Atlanta, to Philly on the airplane.
(40:44):
Ask you what happened is on footthat I had to heal for.
Yeah, Doctor Tommy, there's there's a, there's a video
that's another video that's getting a lot of views too, is
you fixing Doug's neck with yourchiropractic skills.
So. He he's really good.
If anybody needs the neck fix orback fix, that's my man right
(41:06):
there. He can do it for you.
Right, so if you got any ailments come to Metropolis IL
or. But Gene, have you got any more,
have you got any more dates booked that we need to plug for
you on your stand up to? No, not right now.
I've got, I mean, I I've had people wanting to book me, but
I've got all these books and podcasts and all this stuff to
(41:29):
work on, so I really don't have time for it.
So that was just kind of a one off to help my buddy Richard out
his first show that he's ran. So I just kind of did that as
far. As man, I heard you did really
good. I, I appreciate it.
I had a good time. Like I said, I hadn't did it in
a year. So I, I really completely
expected to go up there and eat shit.
(41:51):
I really did. And then I got there and, you
know, a couple other people did really well and my good buddy
Neil, promoter of EPW and his fiance were there and a few
other friends showed up and I'm like, all right, well, I'm fixed
to go up there and just attack this thing.
And I'm either going to, you know, go out and blaze glory or
I'm just going to completely dieup here.
(42:12):
And it is one of the nights. I mean, you guys know how it is
like in the ring some nights just everything works and you
know it just the odds are in your favor.
And I had a good night that night.
So I appreciate Richard, you know, put me on the show and all
the folks that I was friends with that come out to see it and
I'll do it again eventually. Gene, are they going, are they
(42:34):
going to try to do this like once a month or is he going to
try to set it up to do it? Yeah, the the bar had one of the
biggest crowds they've had for anything, from what I'm told.
They were really pleased and I hear they're going to try to put
more shows there. Now, whenever you're there next
time you need to in your ACT. When you're going over it, you
need to, we need to, I'll tell you the whole story about me and
(42:57):
Tommy sitting in that building across the way and us getting
dressed. And Tommy said that was the best
dressing room in the world. It was stock full of beer and
any cooler you went to, there was a different brand of beer.
And I figured since what? Nobody in there, you know, there
wouldn't be nothing in there to drink.
Like, no, like I would want water or something.
(43:17):
But now it was stocked with everything.
But I mean, it was a bar before,so it was full of every kind of
beer that there was. That guy, that guy told me that
was for me. They didn't know what kind I
want. And and then leaving there this
one night we wrestled there like3 times in the place that you
performed at. And leaving there one night
(43:40):
going me and Tommy went back to Memphis to save and we got the
TV that next morning and Jamie Dundee and Wolfie come in and
both of their eyes, they had black eyes and stuff.
But usually that was from them getting into a fight with each
other and they one of them with black the other one's eyes.
But this night going back, they was going back and they was both
(44:01):
sleepy and I think it was Jamie driving and he had his feet on
the on the gas and the brake andhe said he told Whoopi was going
to sleep. So Woofie grabbed the steering
wheel and he was driving the carfrom the passenger seat.
But they was both a little bit intoxicated.
So Jamies driving asleep and Wolfie's got the wheel and he
(44:24):
said he remembered having shutting one eye and having one
eye open and they wind up running right under the back of
somebody and totaling. But they they wind up the people
knew who they was from TV and they wound up not.
I mean, I don't know how they got out of it without any police
or any trouble or anything, but both of them's face was was all
(44:47):
freaking black and blue and the car was told it wasn't their
car. It was, it was I think some
young lady's car that they was in but but the car was towed and
they looked and I said what happened to y'all, Which I
wouldn't thought they just got in a fight because they fight
with each other quite often and black each other's eyes and
(45:09):
stuff. And they said, man, we was in a
car wreck. How did you and Tommy make it
back? I said men, Tommy made it fine
back, which I don't. I mean, you know, I don't even
have a drink. It didn't matter if Tommy was
drinking or not. He wouldn't want to pass out or
nothing. And but yeah, that's one of the
the funny things that you remember.
I remember that from that bar down.
(45:29):
Like I said, our. That was that was that was Randy
Hills downfall, because after that, after that he started to
have to make sure they come to the show.
And but but that but that was the guy that like I told you,
Gene that owns those buildings. He's mine and Tommy's buddy.
He used to. He'd ride with me and Tommy and
(45:50):
take some limousine down to costhim some money.
Nice. That's a that's a true tag team
right there. When one of you is asleep with
your foot on the pedal and the other one's steering.
Y'all? Y'all ever do any tag team
driving like that guys? That got over with me now Tommy
hold the wheel sometimes when I was doing other things, but.
(46:15):
Big guys, at that point we pull off and get a run.
Yeah, but, but I mean, at certain points I was probably
doing other things I might not should have been doing that I
didn't have my hands on the wheel and Tommy might hold the
wheel for a minute. But but no, we never got to that
point where I was over asleep and Tommy was driving or
anything. Well, sometimes I had to get
(46:36):
Wolfie to hold the wheel while Idid stuff.
Not what you said I did, Doug, But I would do things and Wolfie
would stare. But we never wrecked.
Oh my goodness, the the one I don't.
I don't know if Tommy remembers this or not, but the one night
they blessed their heart, the car hit the wall and it was when
(46:57):
Jeff was working here. Remember when Jeff wore that
white cowboy hat? Jeff wasn't in the power with
him. Do what, Tommy?
I said yeah, I was into. That yeah, I know.
But remember Jeff for that whitecowboy hadn't had it in a little
case. I remember Randy Hills and
Wolfie come walking back to the room with the only thing they
had in their arms, that white case with Jeff's head, and they
(47:19):
didn't run into the wall or something.
And and I mean, a new Cadillac. Oh God, a brand new Cadillac and
everything. But now I I had sometimes, but I
mean, knock on wood, didn't nobody get hurt or nothing?
So that's a good thing about those talents.
That's good, because yeah, there's a lot of wild.
Stories. Where was they at?
(47:43):
They was coming around, you know, to get on the Interstate
around the freaking. You know, I'm trying to set up
when you get on, when you go on the roundabout top deals, but
into the concrete wall. Yeah, they hit the hit the wall
and the. Car was Randy Hills with them
too. Yeah, I think so.
I thank you. He or not?
(48:05):
I think he was at the hotel and Wolfie was in the car maybe.
Oh. He let him borrow the car.
That's right, he let him borrow it.
Yeah, he let him borrow his new car and I think they hit the
concrete. Wall.
That's never a good idea. Let those guys borrow your new
car. No, that wasn't probably a good
(48:26):
thing, but then again, he sold me one.
He sold me a town, a car me and Tommy put about 200,000 miles
on. It yeah, we did deal with.
Yeah, but but he didn't give it to me.
He he sold it to me. But he probably gave me a good
deal. Now, hey, Tommy, I got a
question for you. Now you you ragged on me about
the the foot thing, but I got a question that people are asking
(48:48):
me. So that video that one of the
videos we recorded there were you and or you and Doug were
promoting, you know, coming out to the show that day.
People swear that we did this onpurpose.
Whenever I start shooting y'all and you're like, oh, oh, start
over, start over. And I was like, oh, we're live,
pal. They thought we did that as a
bit because, you know, that was something was Sid was on
(49:10):
pay-per-view one time and he said, hey, let's start over and
Jim Ross said we're live, pal, and they had to keep going.
So people thought we set that upon purpose just to be funny.
But can you let everybody know that was legit, that you didn't
realize we were live? You thought I was just recording
Y'all right? That wasn't something we.
No, I did that cause of Sid. The master comedian Tommy Race
(49:33):
did that on purpose. Thought we could cut it
actually. Well, that I'll take the blame
on that one because to be fair, everything we had done up to
that point was all just me recording stuff for later.
That was the first one we did live, so I don't I don't blame
her for not thinking it was live.
And I don't even know. Did you say this is live Dean
(49:53):
or? Yeah, I did.
I said, hey, let's shoot a live video that'll go out right now.
And you can tell people to come out today because they're
actually going to see it on Facebook.
And I I guess all Tommy heard was let's shoot a video.
He didn't hear none of that in between.
And so he gets started and he stops because hey, hey, let's
start that over. I'm like, we're live pal, let's
keep going. You're like, no, let's start
over. Like we're live.
(50:13):
And then you picked it back up. But that one's add like 3 or
4000 views. So so people had a lot of fun
with that one too. And I'll tell you another video
that that match of you and Terryfont from the ECW Arena, we're
now up to 427,000 views on that video on the Dangerous
Conversations Facebook. So is that right?
(50:35):
Yeah. So that's that's pretty cool,
but we appreciate everybody thatgoes on that on our page and
watches all these. Videos Whoopi D sent me
something about that yesterday, something about being the
Bachelor. Terry.
Fuck, he said that was good. All I can remember any bad time
was right with Terry. I mean that was good, but he
(50:56):
just beat the shit out of it. I don't.
I've heard it was. Like.
Yeah, this point looked so real.Suck the dog stink out of me.
But that's why they wrestled back.
Yeah. I mean, hey, I wouldn't have no
other way. Yeah.
I mean, what are you going to tell Terry Funk to lighten up?
(51:17):
I mean, I can't imagine. That hell no, because he just
hit you hard. Hit you hard?
But yeah, but we appreciate everybody supporting the page
and sharing. A lot of people share the videos
and help us get that stuff out there.
So we. Really appreciate it.
Hey got any questions man? Y'all send them in because I
(51:37):
love to answer questions. Hey y'all ask Doug some serious
ones. Ask me some funny ones.
Doug got a lot of serious answers for y'all out there, so
if you need to know something serious, ask Doug.
You need something humorous, Askme.
Or maybe ask G too, because he'shumorous.

(52:00):

since don't know why I said me and you that picture of
yourself. How how did you do that?
That's got to be some kind of AIthing.
The, oh, the one I put up on my Facebook today?
Yeah, no, that's. Hey Tommy, why can you see this
picture now? Yeah, this thing popped up and
(54:07):
said do a picture with AI. So I just clicked on it and it
made a picture of me in a suit. I look like freaking Triple H or
something very weird. And then it made a picture of
like me and like Donald Trump. And I thought, oh shit, I can't
share that. I'll get unfollowed by a bunch
of people and I'll stop listening to our show.
Maybe. Hey, we need your help, folks.
Please help us share douggilbertpodcast.com A lot of

There you go. Yeah, that'd be really cool.
But the Memphis Mafia, they are out there, they are burning up
the roads and they want to come to your town and they want to
come and see you. And if you have an event coming
up or you know of anything that you want to try to book these
(56:17):
guys on douggilbertpodcast@outlook.com,
that's where you can send an e-mail for an inquiry.
And I will get you in touch withthese guys and we will do our
very, very best to make that happen.
And if if something happens and you don't remember that Gene's
got about 8 other podcasts that he's on and if you get a hold of
him, he can put you to to us. Absolutely.
(56:40):
Just I'm not hard to find and and I will get you in touch with
them, I promise you. And if you haven't yet, make
sure you get your hands on your copy of Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert,
the Uncrowned King of Professional Wrestling.
You can get it at tinyurl.com/eddie Gilbert book.
But like I said, that link and all the others is at
douggilbertpodcast.com. People are getting the book
(57:02):
already. People are reading it.
I'm hearing a lot of great feedback.
Doug, I know you are too. I know you signed a bunch of
those already and looking to sign a bunch more.
Man, yeah, I have heard a lot oftalk about it, man, I really
enjoyed us doing the book and, and writing it and getting it
out and everything. I hope everybody enjoys it as
much as we did writing it. And man, I think it's really
(57:23):
cool. It goes back from to 80s
childhood, all the way through his career in wrestling, man.
I just think it's a good book and through my perspective of
baby's life and man, I think it's a a good story and man, I
hope everybody enjoys as much aswe did right now.
(57:43):
Absolutely. I'm really proud to have been
involved with you in doing that,Doug.
And like I said before, if you're familiar with Hot Stuff,
Eddie Gilbert the wrestler, you can read this book and hear the
stories that Doug and you know, their parents and everybody
tells. And you really get a feel for
who Eddie Gilbert the man was outside the ring and really come
(58:03):
away from it feeling like you, you know him more so than just,
you know, as you would watching on TV.
So highly, highly recommend it. And won't be long before you'll
be reading all about Tommy Wildfire.
Rich, we're about to get startedon that and I'm going to just
dig up all the dirt that I can find on Tommy.
I'm, I'm, I mean, I'm going to tell just, I'm going to tell it
(58:24):
all and it should be. Be a lot of fun.
I speak to say that that might be an encyclopedia.
You're kidding. There might be a few volumes of
the of the Tommy Reed story, andit's all the stuff we can't tell
here on the podcast. We try to keep it relatively
(58:46):
clean here, but we're going to tell it all on the even the
stuff we can't tell, we're goingto tell it in the books.
Get ready. I'm going to bury.
I'm going to tell Tommy's story.Early.
No, it's just going to. Be great looks and they're being
quiet. Doug, like I got some stories
you can throw in there too. But hey I fix and say look me
(59:09):
and Tommy was talking about it and I said look when y'all write
your book Tommy, I said you're just going to have to make up
some stuff. I said, because people don't
believe some of the stuff that that that we wrote and put in
80s book and that's the truth. I told Tommy, I said, I guess
you just have to be unbelievableto for people to actually, I
(59:33):
mean, you have to go so far out.I just don't think people, you
know, some people realize as faras I don't say our lifestyle was
so much different and everything, but stuff that we
didn't think was a big deal or anything that other people think
is a really big deal and stuff. I'm going in, I'm going in that
I'm going in on this note on this question right here.
(59:57):
When he was 14, my wife would think, whoop, my I gave him a
piece of candy. I shouldn't.
He was he was 14. Oh my wife, give me up down the
road by I. I told Tommy the other day, I
(01:00:20):
said if, if. I said I know you and Edie did a
whole lot of things and good andin your career and everything.
I said but me and that Steve were Steve's, Tommy's younger
brother. I said if we told everything
that the child carried us through and everything I said
we'd have some stories wouldn't we?
(01:00:41):
Which me and Steve traveled me so when Tommy wasn't him round
and everything. But I told Tommy.
I said me and Steve could tell some stories and time start
laughing said yeah. But anyway, look fellas, I think
we've about covered everything you went to tonight had with
Gene and and. Yes, Sir.
It's been another fun one and ithas flown by.
