Great Bridge

There are moments in the American story that do not bother with ceremony. They do not unfurl themselves across years or announce their importance with the loud clatter of famous names. It passed in less than an hour on a cold December morning in 1775, yet it changed the entire future of Virginia.

It was a test of resolve between a royal governor who believed he could still bend the colony to his will and Virginians who had reached the end of their patience. When the battle ended, Lord Dunmore’s authority collapsed, and the colony that would give the Revolution some of its most important leaders stepped fully into rebellion.
