Jacquie (00:01):
Welcome to the
Day-to-Day Podcast, Calm
Conversations with a Friend, spoken by Jacquie Joy, and you
are listening to Episode 1.
You decide to check yourmessages.
(00:23):
One new voicemail it's from oneof your friends.
You decide it's time to sitdown, make yourself comfortable
(00:48):
and have a listen.
Hey, what have you been up to?
I think you said you were goingto the workshop and I hope your
presentation went well.
I just chilled.
I had a very, very quiet day, which was so lovely, but I did
(01:10):
visit my neighbour.
She was the one that helped usout at the party last week.
She was the one that made superfresh, amazing fairy bread you
know the stuff that you had whenyou were a kid and my brother
loved it.
He was posting photos of it onInstagram and yeah, so that was
a real hit.
So I had to return her tabletennis table, which we used for
(01:35):
beer pong, gave it a big cleanbecause, as you could imagine,
it had a little bit of beer onit and stuff and sticky stuff,
so took it back over and shedidn't even recognize it because
it was so clean.
So that was good.
But then we tried to set itdown again and release the
(02:01):
hinges on it, which shouldn't betoo hard, release the hinges on
it, which shouldn't be too hard.
So I couldn't work it out andgave up.
But she was determined to openthis hinge on the table tennis
table and so she gave it anextra push and the whole hinge
broke and came off.
So we were in stitches laughingyou would have found it super
(02:25):
funny and didn't go down afterall.
So we just left it as is andwandered upstairs.
I felt a bit bad, but I mean, Idid return the table tennis
table in one piece.
So I dug up some very oldcupcake trays.
Well, they're not that old, they're just not well used.
(02:46):
She was needing them for abatch of cupcakes she's making.
She's making 48.
And she was showing me all ofthe little goodies she'd bought
from a local shop that isactually a cake decorating shop,
like they just sell cakedecorations, cake decorating
(03:08):
shop, like they just sell cakedecorations.
And the coolest thing she gotwas like this gold spray.
It was like golden glitter dustso you could actually spray it
into the air.
I got her to test it for me.
Spray it into the air and itjust glittered everywhere and
expanded and it was.
It was magic.
So I think I'm gonna have toget some for myself to spray on
(03:33):
my face or, you know, uh, myneckline next time I go out.
It'll be easy to come off.
It's obviously non-toxicbecause you can eat it.
That was an amazing find.
I have to send you the link.
I don't know if there would bea store near you that would sell
it, but I'm sure you can get itonline.
(03:54):
I think it's pretty cool.
And she also had magic icing, which is and it looks so good.
It was thick, it felt, felt sogood.
The packet was actually likethe icing, so you could squish
it and you just added butter.
So it's good for allergies, because you're going to add the
(04:16):
non-dairy butter and water andmix it up and it's like instant
beautiful icing, though it hadreal body to it.
So that's a very good cake hackto know about.
As well as the spray, she wasalso putting on little u
sprinkles, but they weren't justnormal sprinkles.
These are the new sprinkleswhere you can have every shape
(04:39):
and color.
So they had heart sprinkles, um, star sprinkles and they had
that's right the little blingydiamantes.
What were they called?
I think they're called is itcashews?
They're like little pearls.
(04:59):
You might have seen them.
They used to be on cakes manyyears ago.
Yeah, they looked like littlepearls, so you can sort of
almost place them on top of thecake.
It'll be a lot of work, though.
I think I would prefer just touse the sprinkles and then you
can just get it out or the spray.
Anyway, I must say it was supernice to be able to spend that
(05:21):
time chatting about not muchabout cakes and not feel girly
about working or doing houseworkor something like that instead.
So my New Year's resolution isstill with me after all these
(05:42):
months.
You know, trying to look aftermyself and getting that
work-life balance.
I've always admired how youmake that time each day for
yourself, whether it's going fora walk or doing a little bit of
exercise, stretching Every day.
(06:02):
You prioritize that, and Ithink that has just become so
important for me and I'm sograteful to have someone like
you as a friend that I can learnthese valuable life lessons
from.
I'm feeling super happy aboutthat.
I'm feeling now like I have alot more energy.
(06:26):
I just feel a lot more inspiredand creative and certainly my
body is very happy that I'mspending time daily on stretches
and just relaxation and I'mgetting so many less headaches.
(06:46):
So I'm now thinking why didn'tI do this earlier?
Anyway, better late than never.
They say this earlier.
Anyway, better late than never.
They say You're asking me howthat live music set was going.
So I'm still working out whatmusic to play and the selection
(07:06):
of music and the theme.
And I think I've worked outthat I'm going to do 10 songs
from female singers or songsthat have been made famous by
females, and that will be mytheme.
So isn't that great.
I get to choose to sing some ofmy favourite singers' songs.
(07:28):
So, of course, number one onthe list is Alanis Morissette,
so you'll be happy to hear she'sin there.
And it's a bit hard to choosewhich song to sing, but I've
chosen.
Ironic, I know that one goesdown.
You know it's a crowd favorite.
People sing along to it.
(07:49):
It's a lot of fun to sing.
So that's probably number threeor four on the list.
The first two tracks have to bemore country focused, because
the other girls who are doingthe set are playing country
music.
So I'm not sure if I told youthat or not.
(08:10):
So Nashville style.
So I thought well, I love thatTV show, Nashville.
I don't know if I've talked toyou about that.
It has an excellent soundtrack.
I mean it is about countrysingers.
It is about six seasons of it.
The female lead in it is ConnieBritton.
(08:32):
Female lead in it is ConnieBritton, who is an actress but
can also sing, and my voice isfairly similar to hers.
So I had to choose a song fromthe soundtrack, and the standout
song for me is a song called ALife that's Good that Raina sang
earlier in the series, and thissong is repeated throughout the
(08:57):
different seasons where thedifferent characters, her
daughters, end up singing it andher boyfriend ends up singing
it.
So I thought, well, that's theobvious choice.
And it does sound greatacoustically and my voice suits
her voice, so hopefully thatsounds good.
(09:20):
So we'll kick the set off withthat or another country song or
country pop song I think we'lltry and sing is Shania Twain's
If You're Not In it For Love, and that's a lot of fun to sing.
We're going to try and do thatacoustically as well, so we'll
(09:42):
see how that goes.
I was surprised.
I thought we would be doingthese songs, you know, with
backings, and I'm obviously usedto playing with the band, but
the guitarist he's an excellentguitarist.
He hasn't played for a fewyears either, but these songs
(10:02):
are sounding full and energeticacoustically.
So I mean, as you know, Ihaven't played guitar live for a
little while either.
Anyway, surprisingly it'ssounding pretty good.
I'll tell you a bit more aboutthe rest of the songs next time,
but they're the first two songsand the Alanis song, so I think
(10:27):
you would approve.
You would be interested to hearthat I have received a new pot
plant that I'm going to do tryand do my very best to keep
alive and in good shape.
It's from a friend.
It was for my birthday and she.
It's a little bit of adifferent style pot.
(10:49):
It is a giraffe pot.
She got this for me because Iused to have a zebra that used
to.
It was a paper mache zebra thatI had in my house and it was
quite iconic and came out atevery little party or gathering
we had.
It was just like one of thefriendship group.
(11:13):
It was just like one of thefriendship group.
She's planted, hopefully, avery hearty white-flowered plant
inside of this giraffe pot andso far, so good.
Most importantly, I have tokeep this giraffe pot plant away
from the dog.
(11:33):
The dog got a bit excited theother day and sprinted and
launched himself across thegarden and caught the edge of my
gnome.
So the gnome went flying,flying.
He did land on the concrete, stayed in one piece.
(11:56):
However, his hat is a littleshorter than it used to be, so
we do still have our gardengnome and now we have a garden
giraffe.
Speaking of plants, I know youlove your succulents.
Speaking of plants, I know youlove your succulents and my two
(12:17):
favorite outdoor succulents arethriving again.
Yay, I'm very happy about thisbecause they apparently bring a
lot of good luck into the home,so I wouldn't want them to not
be there.
Fun fact about feng shui andsucculents I still am not quite
sure how to pronounce that word.
(12:39):
Apparently.
I looked it up and it's fengshui or feng shui.
So I have sort of got a hybridof feng shui and would be
interested to hear how you thinkit should be pronounced.
So fun fact is that if youplace them either side of your
(13:01):
front door or at the entrance ofa home, they can attract good
fortune, prevent negativeinfluences from getting inside
of your home, for example envy.
Somehow they protect a spacefrom negative energies as they
come in the front of the house.
(13:21):
So I'm not quite sure how thishappens, but I must say these
plants, I mean they've beenthere for about 15 years now and
they've brought us a lot ofgood luck, very happy about that
, and I would highly recommendplacing maybe a succulent or two
at the entrance of your house,if you already haven't got them
(13:42):
there.
So how we look after them is weput them in the rain.
When it does rain, becausethey're out on the deck, we have
an uncovered section of thedeck, and when it does rain
because they're out on the deck,we have an uncovered section of
the deck.
And when it does rain usuallyevery two or three weeks here,
if we're lucky we'll pop themout on the deck in the open area
(14:03):
, and it does make a hugedifference getting.
I mean, they say rain is thebest type of water when you're
watering the grass or plantsbecause it has a lot of extra
nitrogen in it and thesenitrates, apparently, are
absorbed straight into theleaves and I mean everything
(14:25):
looks greener after rain,doesn't it?
So it makes sense.
I had to move them the other dayand the pots are pretty heavy
to move the terracotta.
So what I do is take theplastic pots that hold the the
succulents out instead.
(14:46):
They're about 40 high, which isabout 16 inches, and I noticed
that they are still in theiroriginal pots, which is quite
amazing.
Somehow they haven't becomepot-bound.
It was funny looking at thepots because there's a sticker
(15:07):
on them from Nova Gardens, whichis obviously where we brought
them from, and they cost $49.98,which is actually pretty
expensive for that back then, but we have definitely got our
value for money.
Actually, that reminds me NovaGardens is a place.
(15:29):
It was a nursery at the Gap,which is where I spent a lot of
my years growing up, and it wasturned into a housing
development, but for many yearsit was the go-to nursery for a
lot of Brisbane.
I know you will ask me what typeof succulents are they?
(15:50):
So they are jade plants.
I will send you a photo, but Idid read a bit more about them.
They are called crassula avata.
I mean, we've always calledthem money plants and some
visitors that come in also.
Apparently they're calledfriendship plants as well.
They're about I'm just tryingto think how high they are
(16:13):
probably about 60 centimetreshigh, so 23 inches, and they're
pretty bushy.
I know they're healthy againbecause they're a new little
like mini jade plants growing atthe soil level.
They're very cute and alsothey're looking very glossy
(16:35):
green.
They look perfect, the leaveshappy and full of water, a bit
like what's that type of aloevera.
That's it and you squeeze.
We used to have the lovely aloevera plants.
I miss them.
I should get them again becausethey're so nice, especially for
sunburn or too much sunexposure.
(16:57):
It would just cool down theskin.
The other things we have beendoing for these plants which may
explain why there are manyplants growing at the base is
that we've been using somethingcalled osmocote, which is
apparently made for cacti andsucculents, so it must have
(17:20):
something magic and special inin there for these plants,
because that has really helpedas well.
So it's nice seeing assucculents not shriveling and
having brown edges and insteadthey're looking super happy.
So I hope yours are doing well.
(17:41):
And I think I told you about the80s party that I'm going to
next Saturday.
Well, I mean, it sounds like aheck of a lot of fun, a bit of a
last-minute party inspired bywatching MTV with some friends
and seeing all of the ratherhilarious clips from the 80s.
(18:05):
So I had to pick a costume formyself and a costume for NJ.
So for myself I chose an OliviaNewton-John style.
Let's get physical outfit inthe gorgeous 80s colors of light
(18:27):
blue and sort of multi-coloredleopard skin tights with the
obligatory uh, what are theycalled?
Leg warmers.
Leg warmers inspired fromFlashdance, of course, and they
are the gorgeous neon, pink andblue shades, shadings.
(18:51):
And then we have the headbandand the wristbands in a nice
shade of blue as well, with anice neon pink bum bag.
So the outfit comes togetherwith a light blue leotard, and
it took me a while to work outhow to put that on, because the
(19:13):
leotard, or the bodysuit, goeson the outside of the tights and
that gives it truly arepresentative, a representative
80s look.
I really don't know of anyother era that would wear tights
and leotards like that.
I don't know if you can imaginethat.
(19:35):
So this should be a lot of fun.
I might take along a couple ofmy pink little arm dumbbells as
well, just for effect, and Imight need to choose a wig as
(19:58):
well from my wig collection, sort of like a ray gun style,
big, oversized blue, yellow andgreen tracksuit.
I'm just trying to think of how, what sort of material it is.
It is that shiny style material.
(20:20):
It's not like tracksuitmaterial and it's certainly
something that break dancerswould wear, and it does come
with a headband as well.
I will definitely have to sendyou a pic of both of us together
with these crazy outfits andcolors on.
It's so much fun even justtrying them on.
(20:50):
We're going to help with a fewdecorations for the party as
well, and also look atpurchasing an outdoor projector
so they can hopefully projectsome of these 80s video clips at
the party as well.
They don't have a TV in theirmain entertainment area, so
having one of these projectorsshould help solve that problem,
(21:13):
and I can't believe I can getone for $100, which is so cheap
Well, very cheap for somethinglike that.
Anyway, as far as decorationsgo, I found a silver foil fringe
curtain which you can hang off.
It's quite large and you canhang it off a doorway or a
(21:34):
window and use as a photobackground, and it looks shiny,
blingy and fun too.
Shiny, blingy and fun too.
So if you've got any more ideasfor 80s decorations or even
music, let me know.
I suppose I'll have to helpthem put a playlist together, so
(21:57):
that's going to be a lot of fun.
And speaking of music still.
I got the Billie Eilish when weFall Asleep album on vinyl and
it looks super cool because it'sa yellow disc, which I love and
it sounded surprisingly amazing.
For example, the Bad Guy trackhad tight and absolutely
(22:23):
blow-you-way deep subby bass.
I just didn't think the vinylwould reproduce it so well.
I think it actually soundedbetter than the digital
recording, so that was prettymind-blowing and heaps of fun to
listen to.
Anyway, enough about me.
Let me know how yourpresentation went.
(22:46):
I can't wait to hear everythingand I shall speak to you again
soon.
Okay, have a great night.
Bye for now.
