Jacquie (00:01):
Welcome to the
Day-to-Day Podcast, calm
Conversations with a Friend, spoken by Jacquie Joy, and you
are listening to Episode 6.
You decide to check yourmessages.
(00:23):
One new voicemail it's from oneof your friends.
You decide it's time to sitdown, make yourself comfortable
(00:47):
and have a listen.
Hey, thanks for the message, and it sounds like you've been
busy writing and creating sinceyou've been back.
Like you, I've been waking up alittle earlier lately to get
extra work done.
It's funny here in Queensland alot of people do get up very
(01:11):
early, maybe because of thewarmer weather, and they also go
to bed early, so that is fine.
Except when you go out fordinner, the kitchens all seem to
close at 9 o'clock or evenearlier sometimes.
(01:33):
It's a bit crazy.
When we went down to Melbourne,I was so surprised that you
could get dinner at 10 or 10.30at night, but of course, when
you went to get breakfast inMelbourne, nothing was open.
(01:57):
You could get a coffee, though,so that was the main thing.
So I was up at 5.30am.
There weren't many cars on theroad at all, but a lot of people
were up and exercising andwalking around the streets
(02:18):
taking their dogs for a walk.
I don't know what yourneighbourhood's like Is it full
of early risers or do peoplelike sleeping in?
Anyway, I did catch a verymagical time of day this morning
and I recorded it for you.
(02:41):
It is a time it goes for aboutfive minutes where all of the
birds in the neighbourhood seemto tweet and talk to each other.
It's like they're saying goodmorning and celebrating a new
day.
I just stood there on theveranda and listened to them
(03:06):
tweet away.
As you know, I love sound andit's a part of nature that I
really love this sudden gorgeousgood morning chorus of chirping
birds.
But the weird thing all of asudden it just stops.
But the weird thing all of asudden it just stops and it's
(03:32):
like okay, well, it's time toget to work.
It's not the best recording, but this is what it sounded like
.
You might have heard a fewclunks in the background and
that was the dog chewing hismorning rusk.
So he always loves greeting meevery morning, probably because
(03:56):
I give him food.
He sleeps outside and doesenjoy being a guard dog, but
anytime I move out of bed orstart walking around the house,
he is immediately onto me andlooking at me through the window
(04:16):
, tapping on the doors, ready togive me a good morning cuddle.
It's funny when I don't wake upfirst and someone else opens
the door to let him in, thefirst thing he'll do is to, at
full speed, run into the room.
(04:37):
I can hear him coming becausewe have wooden floors and his
paws or nails scratch on thefloors when he's running and I
just duck under the coversbecause I know he just loves
(04:57):
jumping on me and giving me ahuge cuddle just to make sure
that I'm awake.
It sounds like your new routineof stretching is working out
really well.
I'm so happy for you and thatit's giving you a lot more
energy and freedom of movement.
(05:18):
I've been doing a differentroutine this week.
I have been using the punchingbag.
I have a set of pink gloves andit's a freestanding small bag.
I think they hang them up ingyms and call them speed bags,
(05:39):
but I'm not doing speed punching.
This bag you punch and it goesabout a meter away and then
comes back to you, goes about ameter away and then comes back
to you.
So I've got a little routine ofsingle arm punches and then
double arm punches.
So that is good forcoordination as well, and we do
(06:00):
have an outdoor gym set and I doleg extensions and have been
doing some crunches on that, which it's been a lot of fun.
That's the key, isn't it?
Making exercise fun.
I love being outside, and inbetween sets of crunches I sat
(06:27):
up and had a little look at allof the peace lilies.
We've got about a hundred ofthem out the front there and
they have just been blossomingall at once.
The flowers are about 10centimetres wide or in length
and about five centimetres wide, and they're all just looking up
(06:50):
at the sun, looking very happyand proud that they were
flowering, and they are alsocalled Madonna lilies.
I think We've had them mostlythere for 20 years.
Recently we've just plantedanother seven or eight pot
plants of them just to fill themout a bit.
(07:13):
When the dog was a puppy hetook a liking to a few of them
and we just needed to replacethem.
So they're looking great.
I'll send through a photo youmay recognise them.
They are grown in warm, humidclimates, so maybe not because
(07:36):
it's dry where you are.
They like being grown outdoorsand don't like the cold at all,
so they are very hardy andperfect for our weather here,
and they really do look verypretty.
I can see why they're calledpeace lilies.
And, come to think of it, thismorning early on, when the birds
(08:02):
were tweeting, there were beesout and they were buzzing around
the peace lilies Not too many, thank goodness like that swarm I
was telling you about a littlewhile ago.
I have to tell you about pinacoladas because I know you love
(08:23):
them and I think I've found agreat way of making them.
I have two recipes one fornormal pina coladas with Malibu
rum, and the other ones are forI call them virgin pina coladas,
but here they're called pinacolada mocktails, mocktails.
(08:47):
That is it.
All started last week when wewent out to see some live music
with my brother's friends and weactually saw an ex-patient of
mine who is a singer now, so itwas great to catch up with her
because it had been many years.
(09:09):
So while we were watching her,we met some other people and I
was talking a little bit aboutmy kitchen frustrations and she
said hey, why don't you comearound and I'll show you a demo
of something called a Thermomix, which is like a Vitamix, I
(09:36):
think, but this has atouchscreen which gives you
step-by-step instructions on howto cook, on how to cook.
(09:58):
It has an attached cooking appso you can choose your meal on
the phone and save it and theThermomix will automatically
know that that's what you arecooking that evening.
And then Also, you can use thisapp it's called Cookie Do or
Cookie Do to make a shoppinglist.
(10:23):
Apparently these things havebeen around for many years, but
it's not something I've usedbefore.
Apart from that, it is like aVitamix before.
Apart from that, it is like aVitamix, but it does have a
(10:44):
simmering basket and a steamerattachment and a few other
things that I'm not familiarwith yet.
But it does make lovely mangoice cream and an amazing pina
colada.
So the best thing about thisthermomix is it has great
(11:04):
recipes attached to it, and I'llsend you the two pina colada
recipes because, of course, these can be made in any ninja
mix or Vitamix.
But I must say, look, I don'tknow if you normally use fresh
(11:24):
pineapple for your pina coladas.
I don't, because it's too muchtrouble cutting it up and I tend
to use either pineapple juice, tinned pineapple or pre-made
pina coladas until now.
(11:44):
So the ingredients for thenormal pina colada are ice cubes
, of course, fresh pineapple cutinto pieces, coconut milk,
caster sugar, desiccated coconutand I mean, I love Malibu rum,
(12:07):
so that's my rum of choice, ormy alcohol of choice for my pina
colada.
There's one for pina coladamocktail and this is the.
It's a quick one to makebecause you just need canned
pineapple pieces which issomething I would normally do
(12:28):
and coconut milk and ice cubes, and you can garnish with
pineapple or coconut flesh.
I'll send those two through toyou.
But flavour sensation, it wasamazing and it felt so healthy
to drink.
Oh my gosh.
(12:50):
Music wise, I've been listeningto some gorgeous cinematic,
ambient pop music.
It's on vinyl because I'mlistening to it for an album
review.
I'll send you through the coverart because it is a gorgeous
(13:13):
impressionistic.
It is a gorgeousimpressionistic well, it's a
print, but it looks like apainting, with brushstrokes of
yellow and greens, and itfeatures an apparition that is
coming up or lifting up from apond of stars, surrounded by a
(13:38):
lot of swirls and doves, and Ithink you love it.
So sending that through.
It's amazing how much thatcover art really represented the
(14:01):
music so well.
It was a great match.
Also, it led me to find anamazing Spotify playlist called
Ethereal Ethereal and it hadsome great tracks on it from
(14:24):
artists like, well, lana Del Rey, of course, imogen Heap, who I
hadn't listened to for a longtime, fiona Apple flume Anyway,
you get the idea.
It's an amazing list.
Oh, radiohead, of course, aswell.
(14:46):
Anyway, I'll send you the link.
You might enjoy listening to itin some of your downtime, when
you're just relaxing in thekitchen making your pina colada.
Work stuff is going well.
I'm exploring the ambience andsound of the Mojave Desert, of
(15:19):
the Mojave Desert.
It's not somewhere I'veactually been to in person, so
I've been doing a lot ofresearch and listening to sound
recordings of people that justvisit there and turn on their
microphone, record sounds andshare it.
And I've also spoken to acouple of people who have been
there and they say that itsounds alive at night.
(15:43):
There are a lot of animals inand around the mountains, main
animals being coyotes.
I was speaking to an Americangirl last night at Felon's
Barrel Hall and Brewing CompanyI just call it the Barrel Hall
(16:07):
because I have trouble sayingbrewing and brewery, I don't
know why.
Anyway, we met them there lastnight and she was saying that
the coyotes coyotes in theMojave Desert sound almost like
(16:28):
birds calling each other other,so they have their own language
howling, yipping, barking.
So I'm looking at all of that, and that will make the daytime
(16:48):
versus nighttime soundscapecontrasty as well.
I think at night they howl alittle more Birdwise.
There's something called agreat horned owl that I've found
beautiful sound recordings of.
I've even found some MojaveDesert crickets Mojave Desert
(17:20):
crickets and of course, theother feature that is very
present in the desert soundscapeis the wind.
So we'll be treating that alittle like a character of its
own as well, because you getlittle wind, swirls and gusts,
whistles of wind, high wind, lowwind, wind rustling in the
(17:42):
trees and the bushes, travellingbetween buildings and mountains
.
So, work-wise, that's what I'mup to.
I hope you have an enjoyablerest of the week.
I know you are super busy atwork doing what you love, so
(18:08):
that's great to hear.
I'll chat again soon.
In the meantime, take care andenjoy a pina colada or two for
(18:29):
me and chat soon.
Bye for now you.
