(00:07):
Hi, this is Debbie. Thanks so much for listening to
my podcast, Deb's Memorable Moments, where you'll hear
original short stories that eachtell a memory of mine to the
best of my recollection. I wrote them all.
I read them all. I live them all.
Let's get started. Just for fun, I thought I would
(00:31):
republish my Halloween episode from two years ago.
Here's a quick summary of where we were at that time.
It's 1995, my boys are 7 and five years old.
The last three years of my firstmarriage were spent living in
London and the boys and I have just moved back to my hometown
on our own and to night is theirfirst Halloween.
(00:55):
And to the listeners who don't know us and anyone who has
joined us late in the podcast, the previous owner of my
townhouse mentioned in this story is now my husband.
And now the story I call it Happy Halloween.
Here we go, happy Halloween. We've been home in the States
(01:20):
for approximately 3 months now, and tonight is Halloween.
My boys have never experienced Halloween before since it's not
celebrated in London. No costumes, no scary stories,
no trick or treating, nothing. So tonight is their first
experience with this custom. Although there was a party at
(01:42):
school today, neither one is particularly excited about the
evening. We live in a townhouse community
with lots of kids, so it will bevery busy tonight.
I make arrangements to go trick or treating with our new
neighbors. The previous owner of our
townhouse will also be joining us.
(02:03):
I'm most excited about this partanyway.
I didn't expect to have so much trouble getting them to put on
the simplest of costumes. They've both become avid
baseball fans since moving back home and each has some shirts,
hats, and pants, but I can't getthem to wear them tonight.
(02:23):
I tell them that our friends will be here soon and we need to
be ready to go. Finally, they both give in and
put on their baseball gear. My younger son is now compliant,
but my older son is still arguing with me that he doesn't
want to go out. I try explaining again that
we're going to walk door to door, ring the doorbells, say
(02:46):
trick or treat, and collect candy from all the neighbors.
I guess if you've never done it before, it does sound kind of
crazy. My older son again repeats what
I just said. I say trick or treat and they
give me candy. Yes, I say.
No, they won't, he answers. I ask him to follow me to the
(03:08):
front door. We look outside at all the kids
walking around the neighborhood.Do you see all those kids
walking around in costumes out there?
Yes, he says. I'm telling you they're
collecting candy. OK, I'll go.
Our neighbors and the previous owner of our townhouse arrive
(03:30):
about the same time and we startour walk.
The neighbors kids run up to thefront door very excitedly.
My 2 hang back a little. They ring the doorbell.
Trick or treat, say the neighborboys.
The homeowner puts candy in all four bags.
They say thank you and at this point my two boys come flying
(03:53):
back to me. They gave us candy.
They gave us candy. I know I say, would I lie to
you? My boys are smiling, laughing
and looking very happy all evening.
They see many of their friends from school.
We walk around for approximately2 hours and collect lots of
(04:14):
candy. When it's time to go home, my
older son says this was the bestnight ever.
My younger son agrees and asks if we can do this again
tomorrow. No, I say, it only works once a
year on Halloween. Both my boys tell me that they
(04:36):
remember their first Halloween here.
It really was a fun evening and for anyone who doesn't know the
story of how the previous owner of my townhouse and I develop a
relationship, it all starts at the settlement table when I
purchase his home. You can hear that story on
episode 2, A magical moment. Thanks for listening to this
(04:58):
encore episode. I hope you enjoyed it.
The new story will come out tomorrow.
As usual, it's called a different approach.
Happy Halloween everyone. Story Music for Happy Halloween
is called Funny Chase by Matt Stewart.
Heavens it's superficially edited.
