Shannon Kahrhoff (00:00):
Hello.
Welcome to Decoding Clients forStylists.
I'm Shannon Kahrhoff.
Today I want talk to thestylists that are frustrated,
losing hope in the career fieldthat they chose.
They might totally love, butthey're getting frustrated.
I see all over the place withthe podcast I listen to with our
career with forums on Facebookthat I, I love to read.

(00:22):
There are a lot of peoplestruggling right now worried
about their empty books, worriedabout not getting the pay that
they need, worried that theyneed to lower their prices to
draw more people in.
And wondering what the heck ishappening to our career field.
Five years ago, people werebegging us to get'em into our

(00:42):
books, to hurry up and find aspot to get'em in so they could
find space for the newest coloror whatever technique they were
wanting.
Today is a little bit differentbecause the economy has changed.
One of my clients was talkingabout recession blonde, where
it's still light, but it growsout softer and it's not a new

(01:06):
thing.
There's been people that wanthigh maintenance and low
maintenance, and in between mywhole career.
But it's, it's one of thesethings that it's freaking out a
lot of the new stylists, theones that have been in that
maybe came in, they graduatedfrom school and built clientele
with social media, and it waseasy.
People were banging down theirdoor trying to get'em to squeeze

(01:29):
'em in one more appointment.
It wasn't so hard to build inclientele.
He post a few pictures onFacebook or Instagram and people
would contact you book toappointment, and they were
there.
People had a lot of extra incomecoming in, especially through
the COVID era when everyone wasgetting the checks.
But things are changing now.

(01:50):
I lived through the 2008.
Bubble burst of our economy andthat one was because of real
estate, bad loans.
No one had enough money to payfor everything and interest
rates spiked and so did theirpayments.
This one is totally different.
I won't go into a lot of details'cause I'm not an economist.
I am a hairstylist.

(02:11):
Our world is different.
People have the money.
It's still the same money.
They still have their houses, they have their cars.
The difference is products arecosting more money.
So the normal things that theywere spending their money on,
they can't make their moneystretch as far.
So they're getting more cautiousabout what they spend their

(02:32):
money on.
They might wait and buy a higherprice item because it will last
longer.
It's not as easy.
More people are, are watchingtheir spending by not doing the
last minute blow off, purchase alittle splurge here and there.

(02:54):
They might put a little bit morethought and effort into where it
goes.
They might research a little bitmore on who they're gonna go
for, their Botox and fillers fortheir hair extensions, their new
hair color.
It's one of these things thatthey are more aware of who
they're choosing to do theservices with.
So this is what is changing inour career.

(03:16):
It's not so much that they'renot getting it done.
There are a few that are doingtheir color themselves or
growing out their hair colorinto their natural gray.
That's a normal occurrence inour career fields.
This isn't abnormal.
The difference is.
People that didn't have to putin much effort into the career

(03:37):
field are realizing that theykind of miss something that they
didn't really connect with theirclients.
They might have splurged on theright drinks in their space or
the coffee maker that no onetouches anymore, and thinking
that was enough of a pamperingfor them.

(03:57):
And it might still work.
It's no big deal.
But I'm thinking more along thelines of people are wanting to
get to know the person doingtheir services.
They wanna feel like they arevalued and understood, and this
is where my whole podcast comesinto play.
I want people to understand howto relate to their clients more

(04:21):
and how to make a difference inmaking them feel seen and heard.
And by understanding yourpersonality and your client's
personality, this is the key tothe future.
You're gonna understand how tomake them understand things, and
you're going to choose how youapproach different services and

(04:41):
different things by whichpersonality you feel like they
are.
By giving them that extra littlebit of attention and
understanding, or even justletting them feel heard.
You are gonna have a loyalclient because it's one of those
things that everyone wants.
But in the last probably 10years, I would say, the world

(05:05):
has been making more and moremoney, and they weren't as aware
of where their money went.
They just loved going for aservice and in six weeks they
were gonna come back and get itall over again.
They were not as demanding asthey are now.
They wanna feel like they aregetting every cent worth of

(05:26):
their service by what theyspend.
And our prices have increased alot because our services have
gone up, because our productsare going up, our rent is going
up.
Everything in our world rightnow has increased a lot in the
last even five years.
It's not just that our careerfinally has a understanding of

(05:51):
our value.
We have as much knowledge in ourheads with the chemistry of hair
color, with understanding thespecific little tweaks that you
need for hair extensions andunderstanding how to install it
the right way so it doesn'tcause any damage to your hair.
How to make it blend so you canwear it straight or curly.

(06:13):
How to make a color blendperfectly so you can get your
recession blonde, and how tomake your hair as light as we
can without damaging it.
This is an art, and we finally,as a career understand our
value, and I know that theclients don't really understand

(06:35):
what they are investing in everytime they sit in your chair.
But this is part of the issue ofwhat you need to educate your
clients on, because we go to somany different classes, or we
should go to so many differentclasses.
Hopefully you're constantlylearning and growing.
We can open up Instagram.
Or TikTok and follow a creatoror someone with a product line,

(06:59):
and we can watch theirknowledge.
We don't have to sit in a colorclass or go to a hair show to
understand the greatest thingsout there.
They put out information justfor us so that we can spend the
15, 30 minutes that we mighthave to understand a new
technique like, oh look.

(07:21):
We can do this just a little bitdifferent and we can cut down
our service time, but get moreof the look that we're going for
and create less damage.
We spend a lot of our downtimelearning and growing and looking
for the next thing because mostof the time we love it.

(07:42):
This is something that a clientdon't always understand.
I've explained how it is goingto an educational class in
another state and I'mself-employed.
I am my own business.
Who's gonna pay for that class?
Me.
Who's gonna pay for the travel?

(08:02):
Me?
Who's going to pay for the hoteland the food and anything else I
have to have for that?
Travel me.
I am my own business.
I am my boss.
No one takes care of me but me.
And every cent that they spendon that hair color, most of it
goes towards expenses or myhealth insurance or hopefully

(08:27):
retirement.
All of this money doesn't gostraight into our pocket.
We have a lot of bills we haveto pay.
We have to invest in oureducation.
We have so many different thingsthat we do, and.
We're not just focused on in ourown little region anymore.
We cross our country and wecross into other countries to

(08:48):
get the education we are hungryfor, to bring back into our
towns and to create the beautyand necessities that most people
want.
But we finally understand ourown value that we have and that
we understand that we can chargeour.
True amount that we need to makea profit.

(09:09):
We don't have to live in thepoor house while we are making
everyone beautiful so that theycan go make a six figure income.
It is okay for us to createwealth for ourselves by working
hard, investing in ourselves, and becoming more.
I learned this in the last two, three years.

(09:31):
Someone opened up the ideas inmy head of knowing that.
Just because I work in a smalltown doesn't mean that I have to
charge small town prices.
It is okay that I raise myprices because I am investing in
myself and I'm investing my timein my clients.
I am trying to be the bestperson for them, and I love

(09:55):
getting to know my clients andbeing there whenever they're
having a hard time betweenlosing family members, going
through a divorce, theexcitement of getting engaged
and getting married and findingout they're pregnant.
We are all blessed to be a partof their lives and sometimes we
don't understand how big of aeffect we have on their life

(10:22):
because we see'em every four tosix to eight weeks, and we are a
consistent thing.
I see some of my clients morethan my own family, and I know
that with my weekly clients, there's times I know information
that their own family don't knowyet because they don't want to
cause problems or stress themout until they know more

(10:43):
information.
So I'm sitting there while I'mdoing their hair, letting them
talk it out to someone thatknows them, someone that cares,
but it's not a direct influenceon my life and their life by me
knowing.
This is the little details thatyou need to get better at to

(11:03):
make a relationship with yourclients.
This is what is lacking in thestylists that don't have the
full book that they did twoyears ago.
Do you have a relationship withyour clients or do you treat'em
like a business, like a bankteller?
Come in, drop off your cash, andout the door you go, here's your
receipt.

(11:24):
That's not what people wantanymore.
They want to be seen, to beheard, get the look and the
style that they actually want, and in a timely manner.
The people that wanna sit therefor three, four hours for a
service, those days are gone.
You might have a few of themleft, but most people have a
million places they have to go.

(11:45):
So they want you to be as quickas you can, precise as you can,
and listen to'em the whole time.
That's a tall order for a lot ofthings.
You have to learn how to dothings one step at a time, but
it is so worth it.
So if this sounds like somethingthat you're having issues with.
Take a step back, figure out howyou actually speak to your

(12:06):
clients.
How do you work with yourclients and figure out how to
improve it.
Make a connection with yourclients and make sure that you
are aware of how you're talkingto your clients.
Okay, so here's how to helpyourself to not hit the sinking
point.
To not get to the burned out, freaking out, worried mindset of

(12:28):
a stylist, not making enoughmoney.
First.
Set goals.
Figure out exactly what youwanna make, what you need to
make, break it down to monthlyto weekly.
To daily understand how muchmoney you need to make to pay
your bills, to have the extraincome that you need, and start

(12:52):
with looking at what your bookslook like now.
That's a good step.
I just worked through this withone of my, coworkers.
She's building up clientele andshe needed that extra motivation
to work harder to work onherself.
Sometimes you have to playmental games with yourself to

(13:13):
motivate yourself, but you needto break down what you wanna
earn and see what you areestimating right now.
How you want to increase it byposting pictures of your
services that you're interestedin doing, that you wanna bring
in, post it on Instagram, onFacebook, on TikTok.

(13:34):
You don't have to do reels andcrazy creation of things.
Just posting some of your workand products that you use.
Introduce yourself a little biton, on social media.
Will help build a name foryourself.
Make sure you have the pictureson there so the client's, future

(13:55):
clients can look at your prettymuch portfolio that you have on
your account and understand whatservices you do.
If they like it, then they willcontact you.
Make sure you put a way ofcontacting you to book your
appointments on your socialmedia accounts.
I got to learn all this stuffthrough my classes that I
learned the last few years.

(14:17):
And holy cow has, it made a hugedifference in my business and my
confidence level.
It's just incredible what thoselittle tweaks in your career can
create.
It's just amazing.
So once you have the motivationfor yourself, goals for what you
wanna bring in, and then youcreate.

(14:37):
Your social media for abusiness, for people to get to
know you, keep it professional.
You can do some personal thingson there also, but make sure
that you are someone that youshow yourself as someone that is
a professional and someone theywould trust to do their hair.
And then you need to work thehours and the days to welcome

(15:00):
these new people in.
You might have to increase yourhours a little bit to get new
people in if you're, if yourclientele is shrinking and
you're working.
Nine to three but you need moreincome.
You need more clients.
Sometimes you have to suck it upand work the hours that these
new clients need to come in.

(15:22):
I love evening appointments.
I'm a night owl anyway, so mostpeople need my evenings because
it's after work.
It's just evenings and weekendswere always my thing anyway.
But I have increased my days.
I come in a little bit earlierthan I ever did before, but I'm
still not there super early.

(15:43):
Just because I offer theevenings, I'm not working 10
hour days if I don't have to.
So be ready to put in a littlebit more effort and opening up
your schedule a little bit moreto create the hours that you
wanna work.
Because if you suck it up nowand make it a little bit more
painful for yourself whileyou're building these clientele

(16:05):
back up, it'll make a hugedifference.
And then as your books are full, you can.
Shrink it down to where youwanna be, but you have to work
hard to get the lifestyle andthe career that you really want.
And this is self-employed withcommission and, chain salons,

(16:28):
it's a little bit different.
You have to work a little bitdifferently, but you can always
increase your hours if they'rewilling to let you be there.
And with commission, you mightnot get paid for the full hours
that you're there.
I know we didn't.
I know they pass laws now thatthe salon owner has to pay you
hourly.
If you don't make so much money, that's fine, but you really have

(16:51):
to put in the effort behind itto create your own magic.
With this industry, you can'texpect someone to do all the
hard work for you.
You have to do your duediligence also.
Go learn some new skills.
Go take a class.
Go follow some new companies onInstagram or TikTok and watch

(17:13):
their training videos.
Watch their educators that drophints here and there.
While you have downtime.
If you have it from a slowerschedule, take that time to
learn new skills.
Learn some business skills, somemarketing skills for our career.
It's amazing how much.
Differently.
You run your business once youunderstand the business mindset

(17:35):
of profits and investments, andit's incredible.
Why did I never think of thisall those years of my career?
I have no idea, but I reallyencourage the younger stylists,
the people that want the longhaul in this career to do it.
Go figure out how to maximizeyour money coming in to create

(17:56):
the lifestyle that you want.
Don't spend every dime you earn.
Make sure you put it towardssomething that increases your
value.
Everyone is gonna be differentwith the services you offer and
the knowledge you have, butfigure out what excites you,
what makes you want to go towork every day, and that can
make the biggest difference.

(18:18):
If you go into work upset andstressed because you have to
make this much money today, it'snot gonna help.
You need to work smarter andfigure out the steps behind it.
Don't think poor, think richbecause everything is an
opportunity.
When you have downtime, use it.
Invest in yourself.

(18:39):
Don't sit there wasting time, reading a magazine, scrolling
through, social mediamindlessly.
Focus, improve yourself.
It is so worth it.
You won't regret it.
So hopefully some of thishelped.
I know our career is in a bigchange right now.
Everyone is worried.

(18:59):
Everyone was worried abouteverything because everything is
changing fast.
But invest in yourself.
Focus and start listening toother podcasts that have the
business mindset on our careerfield.
Go search'em out.
There are so many good thingsout there that can help you

(19:20):
break down how to make yourfinances stretch a little bit
farther.
How to be smarter with how youspend your money and how to.
Market yourself.
There's so many resources at ourfingertips in these days, so
just go and search and findthings and be hungry to learn

(19:42):
new things.
I'm just here to try and helpyou understand how to change
your thinking.
Go find the intelligent peopleout there that can break down
step by step.
How to pay off your debt so youactually have the money in your
hands for that moment and you'renot paying off the money you
spent already.
You'd be amazed how justchanging those things can make a

(20:06):
huge difference in your life.
Go find someone on how to buildthe clientele that you really
want.
I've done it so anyone can doit.
It's just a matter of going outthere and looking for something
new and ready to change yourlife one step at a time.
Just don't overwhelm yourself.
It's totally possible justbecause our world is changing,

(20:30):
it doesn't have to be scary.
It's okay to change yourself tobecome a better, stronger
person, it's okay.
So go out there, learn somethings, go investigate some
things for your better knowledgeand have fun with it.
Go encourage someone else inyour salon who might be
struggling.

(20:50):
Go do a challenge and worktogether with figuring out new
things, because when you havetwo people hungry to learn new
things.
Your algorithms are totallydifferent on social media, so
the people that you're gonnafind might be different than
your coworkers, people that theyfind, and then you collaborate
with it and you're amazed at thedifferent ways that you can

(21:12):
learn different things fromdifferent people.
It's great.
So go have fun, learn some newthings, and don't give up on
yourself.
Have fun and have a good week.
Bye.
