Ok so we kind of know the story as to why Moses and Aaron didn’t make it into the promise land, and I tell you right out the gate that it wasn’t so much the mistake made as it was about the time that they had built up relationship with God that determined the punishment. And but we see for example that King David committed a way more grievous error or sin and was left in his kingly position. Oh I know he paid for the sin, but he didn’t loose the promise of God which is that he would be the king over His people. Moses lost Gods promise to enter the promise land for what would appear to be way less of an infraction than that of King David.
So obviously we are left to ask the question which should always be followed up with seeking the answer in both prayer and in searching the scriptures. Did God leave us an easter egg regarding this rock event. Oh but did you see what I did right there? Ha, we should first review the infraction so that we can unfold this old mystery:
Lev 22:31-32 -31 “Therefore you shall keep My commandments, and perform them: I am the Lord. 32 You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you,
Ok clear enough right? You shall not profane my name but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel. There is that which we call a commandment for Moses. Now lets see how he was obedient the first time the rock event came up:
Exodus 17:1–7 - 17 Then all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, “Give us water, that we may drink.”
So Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you tempt the Lord?”
3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and said, “Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”
4 So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me!”
5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
