Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello, my paranormal peeps, and welcome back to another
Deepoits Panormal podcast. My name is Matt Harvey. I am
the founder and the investigator with Deepoits Paranormal. My wife
and I, along with others, investigate everything paranormal in nature.
Every week we will discuss everything from creepy haunted locations,
to ghosts, to bigfoot, UFOs, dog man and other cryptic

(00:24):
creatures and explore all things paranormal and nature. So tonight
we're gonna be talking about the brown lights in North Carolina.
They're considered like ghost lights. Have you ever ever seen
the Saratoga ghost lights or you've seen a ghost road
or whatever. These were found around nineteen ten. Nobody really
cind of knows what they are. There's a lot of

(00:45):
theories that there may be Cherokee lanterns and it's basically
the women out searching for their men who lost their
lives in.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
The Civil War.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
They could be aliens or UFOs, or they could be
something else. Uh So, Jonah is gonna come on today
and talk to us. He witnessed these lights in person.
Uh these, I'll show you where this is. This is
kind of a viewing area. I don't know where he was,
but he can tell us about that. And these are
out in South Carolina. It's all right, excuse me, North Carolina.

(01:17):
My brain's not working today anyways, Jonah, tell us your story.
What you know, what were you doing? What were you
were you looking for the lights? Were you just kind
of exploring? What were you doing?

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:29):
So I had. I had found them just on a
kind of a random Google search. I was just looking
for more hikes to do in western North Carolina and
that sort of popped up and immediately piqued my interest.
So my buddy and I were driving back from Virginia
to Florida, and we stopped to hike to the top

(01:53):
of Brown Mountain and camp up there just to sort
of see what would happened. The mountain itself is not,
you know, it's it's nothing to write home about. It's
two thousand feet, it's a it's an easy hike. It's
one you really wouldn't do unless you were, you know,

(02:15):
looking for you know, the lights. So so we we
get to the top and it's really just a patch
of woods up there. Yeah, yeah, there's there's there's really
nothing special about it other than you know, these mysterious lights.

(02:39):
So we're we're heading in and we're we're kind of
looking for a place to set up the tent, you know,
and it's it's there's no camp sites. It's you just
got to find a spot basic that's clear enough for
you to do that, right, And uh, it's it was

(03:00):
kind of awkward once we were up there, because it's
it's so unassuming, and you know, it's kind of after
a long week, and we're both not eve us set
it to each other, but we're both kind of thinking,
you know, like, what what are we what are we
doing here? What are the odds that something's really going
to happen here? Yeah, you know, it was. It was weird.

(03:23):
So we find a spot to set up the tent,
and uh, we're inside and we're kind of just trying
to kill some time. The sun is just just setting
and we're just playing cards and my brother, my buddy,

(03:44):
he goes outside to use the bathroom and and that's
when I hear him say, Jonah, get out here.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Now what time was it? About? What time? This is?

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Right as the sun is just about set, there's still
some light out and so I come out of the
tent and he points off into the distance, into the woods,
and there are some lights out there, and so we

(04:19):
just sort of stand there and and try to figure out,
you know, first you're trying to figure out, you know,
what it could be, if it could be, I don't know,
something something normal, you know, I don't know, cars off
in the distance, or flashlights or house lights off in

(04:41):
the distance. But as the sun kept setting and it kept
getting darker, more and more lights started appearing all around them.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Were they moving, were they stationary?

Speaker 2 (04:55):
No, there are some, you know, they're all sort of
doing different things. And once they were all there, there
was just hundreds, it was countless lights. Some some would
be floating, some would shoot up in the air. A
couple very unique ones around the tent who were on

(05:19):
the ground, and they were different shapes, they were different colors,
and we he and I just stood there probably for
I don't know, at least a good five minutes, just silent,
with our jaws on the ground in disbelief.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, so they came up right to you.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, yeah, we were, I say, the closest I got
to to some that night where I don't know, maybe
ten yards away. Terrible, I'm a terrible just distance, but.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
It seemed like they had an intelligence to them, were they. Yeah?

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Uh, one in one in particular, there were there were
three lights.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
That night.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
That were unique to me from from others. Two of
them were these little almost camp fire lights. They were
like little a stack of little fireballs on each side
of our tent, like the exact same distance away.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yeah, to the point where I was like, all right,
that's that's not coincidence. That's And the most unique light
I saw that night was, Uh, I saw one often
the distance a little ways, kind of on its own,

(06:55):
and it had and it had a really weird movement
to it. So I got about, like I said, I
don't know, ten yards away and I I'm looking and
it looks it looks like a lantern and it and
it looks like it's hovering at the height that someone
would be holding a lantern.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
And I watch it go behind a tree and back,
you know, from the other side, and then it just
sort of wanders off into the woods almost like it's
like it's lost, like it's not sure where it's going.
It kind of weaves in and out of trees and

(07:40):
it's it was. It was definitely the eeriest that I
saw that.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Night, like I had an intelligence to it.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Well that's really strange. Now you said, did they have colors?
I'm sorry, I don't remember what you said about colors?

Speaker 2 (07:59):
There were there were different colors, yeah, like all different colors,
different shapes, and and a lot of them. You know,
if they weren't moving too much, they had this they
had this way about them, almost as if they were bobbing,
like as if they were in water or something.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Hmm, that's strange. So they're just free floating around.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, what what's what?

Speaker 3 (08:25):
You know? You said there are different shapes? What kind
of different shapes did they take? Well?

Speaker 2 (08:30):
The specific ones that I like, Because when we when
this first went down, what actually happened My my buddy
kind of eat and handle it well, he actually went
back in the tent. His dog was with us too,
so his dog stayed with him in the tent, and

(08:50):
I was I. I had to go explore and and
and immerse myself in this. So I went off sort
of towards the biggest collection of lights that I could see,
and these ones were just sort of they were all

(09:11):
over the place. There were different colors, different shapes, doing
different things, and I got the sense that they I
was only going to be able to get so close
to them, specifically from the lantern. Because when I first
went up and got to the lantern, like I said,

(09:31):
about ten yards away, just to see what would happen,
see how close I could get, I took one step
closer and the lantern moved back away. And then I
noticed that, and so I moved back to where I was,

(09:52):
and then the lantern came back to it was. Yeah,
so I sort of I kind of took the that is,
you know, all right, it seems like I'm only going
to be able to get so close, and I was.
I was cool with that, you know, I respected that.
So but what a night?

Speaker 3 (10:14):
What a night? So how how long did this last?
To kind of it started at sundown?

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Yeah, So I I told you I went out one
time and I just sort of I found this falling
down tree, and I just decided to sit and take
this all in for a while, because I mean, as
you can probably imagine, you know, the mind is racing
a mile a minute, right, you know. So I did

(10:42):
that for a while, and then I sort of I
was worried about my buddy because he was kind of
he wasn't handling it well. So I decided after a
while to go check on him see how he was doing.
So I went back to the tent and he his
dog or kind of just laying there calmly, and you know,

(11:05):
I asked him how he's doing, and he's saying, you know,
I'm all right, and the only reason I'm not completely
freaking out is because you and my dog seem perfectly fine.
I was like, and I, you know, I tried to
calm him down. I was like, yeah, you know, everything
was was was fine regarding the lights, like there was
there was nothing negative whatsoever. Yeah, it was all it was.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
It was.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
I was loving it, to be honest. So let's see.
I went back out one more time, and I think
that's when I encountered the lantern.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
Interesting.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah, did I feel like I was trying to tell
you something or show you something.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
It really seemed lost. It really seemed lost, and it
had this way of moving like it was trying to
find its way through the trees. And I didn't see
any other light that night that looked or acted or

(12:12):
moved like that. That was it was very unique.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
Like it came to you for help.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Or something it, Yeah, and it was. It was one
of the closer ones to the tent. So so that
was definitely that in the two little like I said,
the two little campfire lights. So what I did was,
I I think I told you earlier, like all I
had on me. You know, this was thirteen years ago,

(12:40):
almost to the week right now, thirteen years all I
had on people was a flip phone. And and so
you know, I tried. I didn't think it was going
to do anything because other than the lights, I mean,
these woods, it's HiT's pitch black. You can't see anything.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
I know, exactly what you're talking about.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, So you know, I tried snapping a
couple of pictures, and there was a couple of times
where you know, I'm holding the phone up towards one
of the lights and you can see the light. But
then I would take a picture and and nothing would
come up.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
And so once once I realized that I just you know,
to save the battery, I was like, all right, I'll
just shut the phone off.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yeah, so.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
I don't I don't remember how how long I stayed out.
I knew like we we had to we had to
leave pretty early. The next morning, because I actually had
I had to work in Florida the next day that night,
so I didn't stay out as late as I would
have liked to, and I knew I had to get

(13:54):
some kind of sleep, or at least try, So after
a while, I went, I went inside the tent to
try and lay down. And as I'm doing that, I
look down at my genes and I can see my
phone glowing through my genes crazy, and it had it
had been shut off, and it's it's glowing to a

(14:17):
point where I've I've never i'd never seen it glow
like this, like, I mean, it was a little too bright.
And I pull it out and I look at it
and there's this, there's there's a black, really really bright
but black screen with countless white numbers and letters just

(14:40):
just scrolling down as far as it'll go. And my
phone had never done anything like this before, and never
never did what's.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
That like a code? Yeah, trying to do mathematical code
or something. Yeah, and wonderful almost if it's almost like
a foe, like maybe an alien.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
It gave off I mean, it gave off that vibe definitely,
you know.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
And it was with electronics and stuff like that. But
normally they dream batteries or like the ghost box. They'll
they'll talk through this right on and they'll they'll say
something through it, or try and manipulate it to create
a word or sentence. But you know, never had like
letters and what or else come through. That's crazy, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
So I managed to get sort of managed to get
some sleep that night. I ended up having four separate
dreams that night, and every single one of them was
about the lights, four of them, and I kept, you know,
I had one of those a tent where you you

(15:57):
don't have to put the top on so it's kind
of match so you can see. So you know, I'm
waking up, I don't know how many times throughout the night,
just sitting up and looking out to see what the
lights are doing. And I finally must have, you know,
gotten a decent amount of sleep because I wake up
and I can see that it's you know, it's starting

(16:20):
to get light now, and there are two lights left,
all of them. The rest of them have disappeared. There
are two left, and those are the two little campfire
lights on either side of the ten.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
Wow, it's like they maybe they get duller during the
day or something like that, and you just can't see them,
but they're still there.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
It's possible.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
So when you go to sleep, your brain pretty much
almost all shuts down, and people don't realize because we
talk about ghosts. When you talk about ghosts, you know
manipulating your sleep, and also demons and angels and stuff
like that can manipulate your sleep. The only thing on
your brain is your subconscious There's no memory on when
you go to sleep, so usually when you wake up

(17:04):
and you're in the middle of a dream, you usually
forget it right away. So if you can remember, there's
a theory that if you can remember what your dream
was and you can reaccount it and stuff like that,
there's a good chance you had communication with some kind
of ghost, if you will, or something else. But almost

(17:26):
it almost sounds like you've had almost like an alien
experience with the numbers and symbols and stuff on your phone.
I wish, especially, there was a way back then you
could have saved that somehow or caught a screen a
shot of it, so we could at least look at
it and go, okay, you know, we need to get
to a scientist somebody that can break this down. And
tell us what this means. Yeah, have you guys been

(17:50):
up there since.

Speaker 4 (17:52):
I have?

Speaker 2 (17:52):
Actually, there's a documentary out that I was a part
of cool called I Saw the Light You can, Yeah,
it's it's out on Amazon Prime right now. A few
years ago I wrote, I wrote the story of my experience,

(18:15):
and then I had the idea of a documentary for
it and trying to go back up and see if
I could experience it again, except this time have cameras
and you know, a film with.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
The document Yeah, have seen things the second time?

Speaker 2 (18:36):
Well, you'll have to watch the film.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
Okay, good teaser? Yeah, okay, Well, we'll have to get
a link from that for that for from you, and
we'll post it in the description down below. Guys, if
you guys want to go watch that or read his book,
We'll get all that information from him and then I'll
be linked down below in our description both in our
audio and video podcast. So if you guys are interested

(18:59):
in here more. This sounds just like the start of
a good alien movie where they you know, these people
go out somewhere and have encounter and get some weird
symbols and then return a certain amount of years later.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
It could absolutely be a film. You know, there was
you know, there's some awkward stuff leading up to it,
some some drama beforehand, and yeah, it could absolutely be
a film.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
Nice. So when was the last time you guys went
up there? So I know you can't give away too
much about the book or the.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Well, we I got ahold of the filmmaker and got
him on board, and then we we did three separate
trips cool up, back up Brown Mountain, and the last
one would have been fall of twenty twenty three.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Nice.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Yeah, so that was the last time I was there.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
So they're pretty a couple of years ago, but they're
still pretty active.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Sounds like, yeah, yeah, you know, I went back once
with my brother, I don't know, like four years ago,
and we actually saw if you're looking on a map
and you look due east of Brown Mountain, I think

(20:27):
it's Adam's Peak or Adams Mountain.

Speaker 4 (20:31):
Oh yeah, yeah, it does not want to go.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
All right. We were working on this, running technical difficulties.
Bear with me, let's see, let me get this share. Nope,
it doesn't want to share. Okay, that's what happens of

(21:09):
paranormal stuff that happens in this office all the time.
So audio clips of other people talking. You can hear
the dogs in the background. But anyways, so if you
go to Google Maps in Brown Mountain, go ahead and
keep going. What were you saying?

Speaker 2 (21:24):
Yeah, so I think it's right next door to Brown Mountain.
To the east, it's Adams Peak or Adams Mountain. And
on certain parts of Brown Mountain you can look over,
I mean depending on the foliage, and you can see Adams.
And when I was there with my brother, nothing happened
on Brown Mountain, but we looked over at Adams and

(21:47):
it looked like the Fourth of July over there. It
was crazy. I mean, it looked like there was a
city up there with all the lights. And I went
with the filmmaker twice and camped upon Adams and there
is nothing up there. Wow, absolutely nothing up there that

(22:08):
would give off any lights.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
Very interesting.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
So I guess they have the lights, have other places
other than Brown Mountain that they will venture.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
Yeah, I wonder if I can get the stupid map
to come back up.

Speaker 4 (22:34):
To share.

Speaker 3 (22:35):
Still does want to share?

Speaker 4 (22:37):
Okay?

Speaker 3 (22:40):
There, Oh, there we go. Okay, No, we're back in here. Okay,
so Brown Mountains something of this will let me move around, Okay,
so Brown Mountains here. What was the name of the
other The other mountain you.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
Talked about, Adams Peak or Adams Mountain should be the
one right to the east of Brown.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
The east is this or somewhere. Yeah, I can't get
this to move, but I can only share my screen.
I don't know if people can see this. Yeah, that's
very interesting because it's right next to a fault zone here. Okay, interesting, Yeah,
I mean the fault could be giving off energy as well.
There's a lot of haunted locations and other things that happen,

(23:23):
especially UFO sightings along fault zones.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
Okay, let's see.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
Let's see we can stop sharing for a second. There
we go. Maybe I can do this again. Hold on,
let me try this again. There we go. Okay, now
maybe okay, now we can move this right there might
be sure. Okay, so the east. Yeah, look look at
this fault zone. Ohs surrounded by fault zones. See all

(23:53):
this were here, can you see? Yeah, that's a fault zone.
This is all a fault zone as well. All this Yeah,
it comes down, goes back up and kind of swings
down through and comes back up this way, and it
goes like this. Oh, yeah, so you can see all
my big foot sightings.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Oh is that what that is?

Speaker 3 (24:13):
Okay, pretty much? Let me see come on, scroll back in. Okay,
there's a different picture. Yeah, you can see. So there's
where you were kind of hanging out, and here's all

(24:33):
these blue things are or some kind of paranormal sighting
of some sort. So that's interesting. It's right in the
thick of a bunch of paranormal activity. Very strange. Look
at all that. That's insane. But yeah, I mean, that's
just really cool that you're seeing all that. I mean,

(24:55):
all this whole area is just it's probably just a
paranormal hot zone, right. It'd be interesting to one of
these days compare it to what the Saratoga ghost lights
looks like to see what's around there as far as
paranormal activity. Yeah, to the west of that, down by

(25:17):
the Mexican border, there's a lot of UFO sidings. Okay,
So yeah, I mean I would I don't think I
have very many UFO sightings on here. But this is
all Bigfoot territory in this area, especially along these vall zones. Okay,
the mountains out here, because there's not a lot of
people who live out here, right, that's really cool. Yeah,

(25:39):
very very strange. Okay, so you were talking about the
east that Yeah, so's it's one of these other peaks.
Probably up in this area somewhere around here.

Speaker 2 (25:54):
Yeah, it's right next door to it.

Speaker 3 (25:56):
Yeah, probably closer over here somewhere or whatever. Let's see
it because well down you know, I say.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
I think there's a there's a road that goes right
in between them. I can't remember the name of it,
Brown Mountain Beach Road maybe.

Speaker 3 (26:16):
Yeah, I think this is a hiking trail. It might
be the ninety. It's probably this ninety. And you're probably
talking about something over here.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
Yeah, I just remember there was a road right in
between the two.

Speaker 3 (26:31):
Yeah as well, Yeah, Brown and Mountain. Yeah, here it is.
So here's the ridge and here's the Brown Mountain Beach Road.
So it's probably somewhere over here. Yeah. Yeah, probably came
up this road here up here, somewhere. Let's see Carol
Mill Creek Lane that dumps you off somewhere over here,

(26:56):
sitting and zooming enough to see. Nope, let's see for
a little gog go down there. Nope. He's like, no way,
I'm not going out there. Yeah, that's that's really interesting.

Speaker 2 (27:11):
Yeah, it was wild night.

Speaker 3 (27:14):
Yeah, so this valley here seems to be a hotspot
that's really interesting. So you saw something over here when
you were over here. Hum, well, this sounds really interesting.
I mean, maybe some paranormal investigators in the area. I'd
like to go out here and check this out. We'll
sure there's people that explore it.

Speaker 2 (27:33):
Well, normally there's like three sort of viewing points, like
on kind of the side of the road, like miles away,
Like they're like designated viewing points for the Brown Mountain lights.
But you know what I did when I when I
read about him, I kind of read that and I
was like, why doesn't somebody just hike up there and

(27:54):
see what's going on? And so that's what I did,
and I was rewarded.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
Yeah. Yeah, these two lookouts are not very far from
each other, right ridge and Brown Ron overlook. Yeah, it's
gonna shows you a little bit more of this, gives
you a better idea. Look how forced of this is.
Oh yeah, some thick stuff. I mean, you're not gonna
go walking into this, that's pretty right. Yeah, there we go. So,

(28:25):
I mean this other ridge is probably what you're talking
about right here.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
Yeah, that looks like it's one of them.

Speaker 3 (28:34):
That's probably another stopping point, these ridges. These were probably
old volcanoes at some point. Yeah, I mean, great, this
looks like a great place to explore.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Oh it is, Yeah, maybe.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
Fun Just go walk up there. You guys do a
lot of adventures up in this area.

Speaker 2 (28:55):
I have just pretty much just for Brown Mountain. I actually,
my other and I hiked up Mount Mitchell to begin with,
and that's kind of where this all started. We got
back from Mount Mitchell and I wanted to find more
hikes in the area, and that's how I came across
Brown Mountain.

Speaker 3 (29:12):
Nice. Well, it looks like a really cool place to
go explore and check out. You guys definitely need to
go check out his documentary and read his book. Like
I said, the links will be down both in the
audio podcast and the video podcast below. I'll definitely get
that from him and we'll share that with you guys,
and you guys can go check out his movie and

(29:33):
see what it looks like. I'm sure it's gonna be
cool to relive his experiences and stuff like that. I mean,
it's not often that people will take the time to,
you know, do a documentary about an experience they had.
It's it's very rare, but anyways, well, Jonah, thank you
so much for coming on and sharing your experiences with us.

(29:54):
We really appreciate it. And we'll have to look for
your book and then also watch the documentary and see
exactly what happened. You know, I know that's pretty much
a mystery at this point. I'm sure there's a lot
more juicy details in the in the story here. So anyways, guys,
thank you very much, Joanna Jonah, excuse me, I can't
talk tonight for coming on, and we will catch you

(30:16):
guys on the next one.
