This episode is brought to youby Dynamic Tactics firearms.
What is STOP THE BLEED®?
Well, it’s a campaign based onlessons learned by the U.S.
Department of Defense(DoD)during the wars in Iraq and

(00:42):
Afghanistan on how best tocontrol severe bleeding.
The goal of the campaign is totrain and equip private citizens
to use these medically provenbleeding control practices to
save the lives of people whohave suffered a traumatic injury
involving severe blood loss.
To achieve this goal, DoD joinedwith several governmental and

(01:03):
private organizations in apublic/private partnership to
offer STOP THE BLEED®classes andto expand the availability of
high-quality kits and medicaldevices designed to control
severe bleeding.
To ensure the quality of thetraining classes and licensed
products, DoD has registered theSTOP THE BLEED®mark in the U.S.

(01:24):
and other countries.
All training classes promotedunder the STOP THE BLEED®brand
teach DoD approved courses andthat all licensed products meet
or exceed DoD standards.
Everyone has the capacity tohelp somebody.
That singular concept is thelaunch point for the"Stop the
Bleed campaign", a joint effortbetween the White House, the

(01:46):
National Security Council, andthe Department of Defense
designed to raise publicawareness and resiliency with
regards to situations of masscivilian trauma.
The campaign seeks to increasethe public's understanding of
its own capacity to respond tomatters of trauma and render
life-saving aid.
In the past few years alone, wehave witnessed a series of mass

(02:09):
trauma and casualty situationswithin our borders.
In 2012 the Connecticut schoolshooting, in 2013 the Boston
Marathon bombing and in 2015,the Amtrak derailment near
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Each one of these incidents, regardless of cause, underscores
the need for broad publicawareness of how to respond in

(02:31):
such situations.
Understanding that an event mayhappen is not enough.
All Americans must understandhow to react in such situations
and know how to help theirfellow Americans in such drastic
and acute situations.
This is where the"Stop theBleed" campaign comes into play.
By explaining in simple termshow everyone can save a life in

(02:52):
a mass trauma situation, ourgovernment hopes to build
resiliency among the public andincrease the chances of survival
in the wake of such tragedies.
Trauma is the number 3 overallcause of death in the US and
accounts for more than 190,000deaths every year.
The goal of this campaign is toimprove public safety and save

(03:14):
lives.
With multiple ways to controlbleeding in an emergency, these
would be your best optionsdirect pressure, packing the
wound, and/or applying atourniquet.
It’s only recently thattourniquets have been
re-embraced for their lifesavingpotential.
After tourniquets and tourniquettraining were widely adopted by

(03:35):
the military, their use duringthe Iraq and Afghanistan
conflicts was reviewed in 2012and a clear survival benefit was
identified.
This data was carefullyevaluated by the US military and
then included in the TacticalCombat Casualty Care standards
for training and military fieldcare.
A follow-up study in 2014 showedsimilar benefits related to

(03:59):
tourniquet use by civilians andfurther introduced direct
pressure and wound packing tothe list of simple but effective
skills that could be used tocontrol active bleeding in an
emergency.
When Joe first worked for EMS inNew York City, tourniquets were
not in use, but direct pressureand wound packing were, with
tourniquets following a fewyears later.

(04:22):
When these efforts were lookedat collectively, the life-saving
potential of early bleedingcontrol became clear.
It also became clear that timewas a critical factor, and
outcomes were directly relatedto how quickly bleeding control
was achieved.
In case you don’t know, someonecan bleed out in 2 to 5 minutes.

(04:42):
The findings would ultimatelyhelp establish the bystander as
playing a critical role insaving lives due to severe
bleeding.
The need to train bystandersbegan soon after.
Bystanders will always be firston scene no matter how fast
professional emergencyresponders arrive.
Remember, a person who isbleeding can die from blood loss

(05:03):
within five minutes; so, it’simportant to quickly stop the
blood loss.
Those closest people to someonewith a life-threatening injury
are best positioned to providefirst care.
