Berly (00:01):
Music. Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares, Tipsy
exchange Podcast where weexplore the supernatural series,
episode by episode, over

LA (00:11):
drinks, we'll discuss the lore the gore and what we adore
about the Winchesters and theiradventures.

Berly (00:17):
I'm Burleigh and I'm a new fan of the series.

LA (00:20):
I'm LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get
tipsy. Hello, LA, hello. Barely.

Berly (00:29):
So this week we are on season one, episode three, dead
in the water. That was good.
Thank you. I don't even know ifthat's the words of the song,
but that's just what I hearddrown in the water, is it? I

LA (00:44):
think that's the name.
What's the song? Yeah,

Berly (00:46):
yeah, something. That's what I heard whenever I read the
title. Yeah. But before we getinto episode three, we have a
quick recap of last week'sepisode, which, when we started
digging into the lore, it got alittle depressing, Yeah, ooh.
Well, I

LA (01:03):
mean, cannibalism is never gonna be fun, yeah?

Berly (01:05):
It's not gonna be. It's not ever gonna be a good time,
right? But the show wasinteresting. I enjoyed the
episode, but, yeah, the lore, digging into the lore, was not
fun. But we'll recap the show.
We'll leave the lore alone.
Where it was Sam and Deanfollowed the coordinates left in
their father's journal, and theyended up in Black Ridge,

(01:27):
Colorado, basically in themiddle of nowhere, and were
helping some people find theirbrother who had gone out on a
camping trip and haddisappeared. Basically they end
up learning that they aredealing with a Windigo, which is
a creature made famous in NativeAmerican Legends. A Wendigo is a

(01:51):
former human whose cannibalismhas transformed him into a
creature with superhumanstrength and speed that feasts
on human flesh. And so it wasreally, really cool.
Cinematically, all that stuff, lore, depressing, all that
stuff, but overall, a prettygood episode. Yeah, and

LA (02:12):
I have to say there were a couple moments, like where they
the certain shots and, like thelight on their faces, and
everything was done really well.

Berly (02:19):
That's what I was saying.
Like the cinematography I reallyappreciated. Yeah, it

LA (02:22):
was a good one.

Berly (02:23):
The cannibalism discussion just ooged me out. So
this week, luckily, it's not asOogie LA. Take us into the
recap. Let's talk about the goreand what we adore from episode

LA (02:36):
three. All right. Well, if the

Berly (02:42):
way to kick it off. We're off to a great start. The

LA (02:47):
opening scene of this app.
Okay, the opening scene in thisepisode is really reminiscent of
the opening scene of the 1970jaws.

Berly (02:59):
7075

LA (03:01):
did I say, Yeah, 1975 so 75 and I was like, one of
Spielberg's first Yeah,

Berly (03:10):
I just didn't realize it was, I always thought it was the
80s movie. Oh, okay, okay, so,yeah, where the girls swimming?
And then,

LA (03:17):
like, she, like, it's dark in Jaws, like she's out in the
ocean, right? And then she'sjust swimming around, and then
gets pulled under. Well, thisone, she is in a lake. Was a
lake. We're talking about theSIS, the girl that goes missing,
right? Yeah, very beginning inthe opening. So, yeah, she dies
into the lake and is just kindof doing her thing. She's
swimming and then stops, samething gets pulled under, right?

(03:39):
It was, it was kind of cool tohave a little Ode to jaws. I'm
sure they did that on purpose.
Well,

Berly (03:45):
the fantasy, horror, drama, supernatural, I'm sure
that we're gonna see a lot ofkind of, like at last episode, I
that was definitely Carrie, likeone had a you know. So it's nice
to see Carrie and now jaws, andit's fun. I'm enjoying it.
Homages to Yeah, other stuff, yeah. I'm excited for fans to
start telling us the stuff we'vemissed, because I'm sure we've

(04:08):
missed all little easter eggsand things. Yeah. Okay, so
opening scene Jaws, we see agirl go in the lake. She's
swimming, and then she getspulled under. Gotcha

LA (04:19):
Well, Sam and Dean, they decided to investigate this
drowning of this girl that wesaw in the opening scene, 18
year old, Sophie Carlton. Andshe's a the third drowning
victim in the last year whosebody wasn't recovered from Lake
Manito mana talk. Now, they gotthis information people from a
newspaper. Yeah, they, I don'tknow if anybody remembers those.

(04:41):
It was they

Berly (04:41):
don't have a Google search set yeah for weird shit
on on their phones and whatnot,

LA (04:48):
old school, circling it in the newspaper and taking that
clipping with you. Yeah. Soanyway, they they go to the
local sheriff's office and poseas federal wildlife. Of
officers, which I love, thatthey keep posing as all these
different like officers andpeople, and it's like anybody
that looked at them would knowyou're not any type of officer,

(05:10):
and nobody's dressed, yeah? I

Berly (05:12):
mean, not since the pilot, yeah. And even then he
questioned it, and they're like,Oh, well, thank you. They just
kept talking and just movedright past it, yeah. Speaking of
the newspapers, the other thingI noticed that I haven't
mentioned yet is they're usingmaps, yeah, to find all these
places that they're going to notmap. GPS, no GPS, no printouts
from map quests, like they'reliterally looking at maps and

(05:35):
going that way. I tried using amap one time I was in El Paso
for work, and I got lost becauseI missed a turn on my map
quests. And Mapquest doesn'treroute for you, like you're
fucked. You missed a turn onMapQuest, you're fucked. And I
had to call my dad, and my dadhad to go look at a map and find
where I was, and then give melike my dad was my GPS, yeah, in

(05:58):
my phone, being like, turnright, turn left and got me to
where I needed to be. We're sospoiled. So yeah,

LA (06:08):
so newspapers and maps people, that's where we're at,

Berly (06:12):
right? And Blackberry phones, yes,

LA (06:16):
alright, so they're posing as federal wildlife officers at
the local sheriff's office. Whohis name is, Jake Devins. Was it
Devins or Devons? Can'tremember. Anyway,

Berly (06:27):
I shrugged.

LA (06:30):
They tell him that they have found or he tells them that they
found nothing in the lakedespite like running sonar
sweeps and that the lake is soongoing to be drained because
they're gonna have a local damor, no, the local dam is
leaking. Yeah,

Berly (06:44):
they like, open the spillway or something. Yeah,
there was a, it was, like, a,kind of a complicated thing,
like something, something openedthe spillway. There's not gonna
be like, soon anyway,

LA (06:53):
so it's basically not gonna be there much longer, right? And
while they're there, they alsomeet Jake's daughter Andrea
barn, or her little son, Lucas.
Lucas clearly has some issues.
He doesn't speak at all. Yeah, and

Berly (07:08):
Andrea is played by Amy Acker, who, if you were a fan of
Buffy, the vampire and Angelseries, which I think we're also
on, CW, Amy Acker is she? She'sa main character, later on, an
angel. Oh, really, yeah, I can'tremember the character. The

LA (07:25):
name sounds familiar. Think she was

Berly (07:27):
in quite a few things by Joss Whedon. I think she was,
like, a regular actress that heused repeatedly. But I'm drawing
blank on what else she was in.
Oh, okay, but I know she was anangel. Okay, yeah,

LA (07:38):
they have all these, like, pretty ladies in each episode
that I like flirting with one ofthem. You know, mainly Dean. I'm
ready to see some flirting withSam, but I know we gotta wait
for it. I do get over hisgrieving.

Berly (07:48):
I am gonna call out LA, when we started this episode,
one of the first things she saidwas, what are they gonna take
their shirts off? No, I

LA (07:56):
said. I was like, Do they ever, do they ever take their
shirts off? They like to havesomething to look forward to.
Just it was just the question, you know, just curious

Berly (08:07):
they do. I wasn't paying attention to the story whenever
I watched the series originally, but I know I saw things that
made me stop and be like, Oh,okay, what's happening? Cool.

LA (08:16):
I'm ready for it,

Berly (08:17):
right? Let's get to it.
Come on. So

LA (08:20):
anyway, so Sam and Dean researched further into the
lake. So they learned that notonly have six other people
disappeared in Lake, Manitowoc,oh, I keep wanting to say
Manitowoc,

Berly (08:29):
yeah, because mana talk, we did Google. It is not real.
There is not a lake. Manitowoc, yeah, but there is a what is it?
Manitowoc, and that's like, isthat a lake or a town? Think
it's a town. Think it's a town,city, yeah.

LA (08:42):
Anyway, so six other people disappeared in Lake Manitowoc
over the last 35 years, and theyalso find out that little Lucas
witnessed his father's drowningearlier that year, and he spent
like two, what would they say, like, two hours before he was
right, he was just on like alittle plank,

Berly (09:00):
yeah, just like, floating on her little raft or something,
which would be traumatizing, andexplains that he's not speaking
right now, right?

LA (09:07):
And doesn't Andrea, like, say he's got, like, PTSD, right?
It's not, she doesn't say that,but that's basically

Berly (09:13):
what it is, yeah, basically getting around to,
like, he's, he's gone through alot, is what I think she's
trauma, yeah, at the end ofrumor, if it's Andrea, or if it
was her dad who was the sheriff.
Oh, and, yeah, I

LA (09:21):
think it was the dad. I

Berly (09:22):
think it was the dad.
Yeah. He was like, he's beenthrough a lot. Yeah, we've all
been through a lot. Yeah, that'swhat he said, Yeah. Very
dramatic. And telling, yeah,

LA (09:30):
yeah. So they decided to go talk to loose Lucas and see if
he'll, you know, talk to them.
Andrea and Lucas are at thepark. Dean tells Lucas he knows
what it's like to see somethingthat most people wouldn't
believe and kind of sits down, tries to be buddies with him,
and tells him he's, you know,he's good at drawing, I'm gonna
draw a picture with you.

Berly (09:50):
And proceeds to draw stick figures. Yeah.

LA (09:53):
He tells him, this is my family. He's like, this is my
mom, my dad, my brother. Andthen he doesn't. He's like, it's
not that great, but leaves

Berly (10:01):
it for like, so I'm a shitty artist. What of it? What

LA (10:04):
do you want to say? But he's just trying to get Lucas to kind
of give him any kind of clue ofwhat he saw when his dad waited
he was with his dad. Yeah, andLucas just kind of ignores him,
keeps drawing, and then so theyare over, off to the side,
talking with Andrea, and Lucaswalks up and hands Dean a
picture, and it's a picture,good drawing for a little

Berly (10:26):
it was really good of a house. There were sporadic,
really good drawings that it waslike, okay, somebody else did
these drawings, and they didn'tdo kid drawing well enough.
Yeah. Like, there were some ofthe, some of the drawings of the
bicycle looked like a kid didit, but some of them, I was
like, a kid didn't do that one,a kid didn't do that house
drawing.

LA (10:43):
Very talented kid. Really good. Yeah, okay, so the same
night, that same night, willCarlton, who is Sophie's father,
yeah,

Berly (10:53):
the dad of the daughter that we saw in the open, that
they came

LA (10:57):
to investigate about, right?
Yeah. Oh, no, this, that's herbrother or the brother? Yeah,
sorry. So will Bill, Bill, Bill

Berly (11:05):
Carlton is the father. Is the dad. Will is the brother,

LA (11:09):
yeah, so will Carlton is, I think he doing dishes or
something, and in the kitchensink, he starts running the
water. It turns to black water, gross, right? And even though he
pulls up the drain, the plug, the plug, like this, whole sink
is filled with water. It's oneof those big countries, yeah,

(11:30):
and something pulls him underhis head, below the surface, and
drowns him. I mean, if you don'tsee anything, it just looks like
something invisible is pullinghim in. And so then Sam informs
dean of Will's death, and theyconclude that whatever's going
on in the lake knows the lake isbeing drained and it's running
out of time to get its revenge, yeah. And they assume that

(11:54):
Sophie's father, Sophie andWill's father, Bill Clinton, is
somehow involved, since they'retargeting them. You said, Bill
Clinton, did? I really did?
They assume that Sophie andWill's father, Bill Carlton,
were somehow involved, since itkeeps targeting his well, it

(12:17):
targeted his two children, andthen Lucas's father was actually
his godson. So it's all peoplerelated to him. They don't learn
anything from Bill because he'sjust too traumatized and
grieving and can't He doesn'tgive them anything. Yeah,

Berly (12:31):
he's like, I've answered too many questions. Yeah, I'm
sad, baby alone. You're notsupposed to watch your children
die, which is true. I have, Ihave heard that's like the most
terrible experiences ever. When

LA (12:44):
they're leaving, Dean looks over at the front of the house,
and then pulls out the drawingthat Lucas gave him, gave to
him, and he realizes it's thesame house. And so they go to
visit Lucas again, and then deanends up telling him about what
happened with his mother, notdetails, of course, because that
would terrify the child, right?
He was like

Berly (13:02):
she was stuck on the ceiling, bleeding on my baby
brother, and then she burst intoflames. Like he didn't go into
detail, yeah, he just said hesaw something scary, right? That
he he knew he had to be brave.
Basically, yes,

LA (13:16):
yes. And Lucas provides Dean with a second drawing that is
another house, but it's next tonext to a white church with a
boy wearing a red cap on his redbicycle. Yes,

Berly (13:27):
which we've seen the bicycle a couple of times. Yeah,
so we already know there'ssomething important about that.
Yes.

LA (13:33):
So Sam and Dean go and find the church and the house that's
nearby, and there's a womanliving there, and they discover
that her son, Peter Sweeneyvanished 35 years ago on his
bicycle, red bicycle. Sobicycle,

Berly (13:48):
I want to ride my bicycle.

LA (13:54):
Okay, so while they're there, talking with um, Oh, Miss
Sweeney, I guess Mrs. Sweeney

Berly (14:00):
Todd. Oh, my God, no, no more cannibalism. We're over the
cannibalism. Why did I go backto cannibalism? Oh, Dean

LA (14:07):
spots a photo of Peter and with Bill Carlton. And they
start to think that bill mayhave had, may have killed Peter,
and the thing in the lake isPeter's Vengeful Spirit coming
after them, after theirfamilies, so they go back to
Bill, but as they arrive, Billis motoring out on his little
boat on the lake.

Berly (14:28):
Oh, yeah, this shot scared us. Oh, my God. We're
like, what? It's just got

LA (14:32):
his little motor going. He's trucking along, and then out of
out of nowhere, some it lookslike an explosion happened.
Yeah? Like, there's nothingthere. It's just like, it comes
up from under his boat. Itblasts him out of the boat and
just like, obliterates the boat,yeah,

Berly (14:47):
just flips the boat up, like, just like a giant cat
swatting something up. Justlike, flipped it. So Peter got
Bill, yeah. Bill, like, wentflying out, yeah, and he
vanished under. Water.

LA (15:00):
So after that, the sheriff tries to run Sam and Dean out of
town because he realizes they'renot real federal wildlife
officers, which

Berly (15:08):
I think he had a hint, like he had an inkling about
that from the very beginning.
You could tell he suspected, as

LA (15:15):
they all should, when they try to save somebody, so they're
leaving town. But of course,Dean thinks the Hunt's not over,
and doesn't turn off to couldleave town, turns back into
town, and they go to Andrea'shouse. Lucas answers the door
panicked, leads them to thebathroom, where Andrea had
started taking a bath. But ofcourse, the black water snuck

(15:36):
in, and same thing that happenedto will she's being pulled under
by seemingly somethinginvisible. I

Berly (15:42):
remember that scene really disturbed us when she's
in the tub and you see like thedirty water, like she's sitting
there with her eyes closed, justtrying to relax, and you see
this dirty water starting toengulf around her, like
decolletage and all that. It'sjust like, oh.

LA (16:00):
So the boys bust in, Sam heroically pulls her out of the
water, right? And

Berly (16:06):
like she's naked because she's in a tub. And so like Sam
Winchester, reaching in there, grabbing you like big old hands
and pulling you out the tub. Iwould have been real tempted to
just roll over. I

LA (16:19):
would have been like Sam or Dean and Lucas, please give me a
minute. Just

Berly (16:23):
step away, Sam,

LA (16:24):
you shut the door.

Berly (16:25):
Sam, oh, I'm cold. Hold me tighter. Oh,

LA (16:33):
well, anyway, after she's out of the water and everything,
she tells them that she heard avoice saying, Come play with me.
Creepy. And Dean goes throughand call back to

Berly (16:45):
the shining.

LA (16:46):
Oh yeah, come

Berly (16:46):
play with us. Hey, daddy.
Dean

LA (16:50):
goes through Andrea's photo

Berly (16:51):
grown up. Danny, can get it too. Oh yeah, you won.
Mcgroger,

LA (16:57):
okay, sorry. Dean goes through Andrea's photo albums
while they're there, and whileshe's kind of chatting with
Dean. And he discovers an oldphoto of Andrea's dad, Jake with
Peter. And he assumes that Jakewas also involved in Peter's
death, and that Peter's spiritis targeting both Bill and
Jake's loved ones, as I said.
And when we

Berly (17:14):
say old, we're talking like Boy Scouts, yeah, like,

LA (17:18):
yeah. So then Lucas leads them to this spot in the woods
that's near the lake, and hejust stands there and like looks
at Sam and Dean looks down. Andso they send him back into the
house and start digging. Andthey discover a red bicycle
buried there in that spot thatLucas showed them

Berly (17:39):
bicycle.

LA (17:41):
And then lo and behold, who shows up as Jake with a gun.
He's not happy, pointing it atthe brothers. He reveals
basically that Peter was thesmaller one of the group. They
bullied him. They were out atthe lake one day putting his
head under the water, and justso happened to do to keep him
under a little too long, and hedrowned, yep, so they let his

(18:06):
body go into the lake. And, youknow, just never told anybody
Yeah, and then buried the bike.
So as they're all discoveringthis around the bicycles Lucas,
they see Lucas over by the lakeon the dock,

Berly (18:19):
because Lucas heard come play with right? And went, Okay.
And, like, ran over to the lake, and he dropped one of his little
green army. They

LA (18:28):
had an army. That's what he's trying to reach, right,
yeah. And, of course, the arm, dead arm, dead looking arm,
like, comes up, pulls him in. It

Berly (18:36):
looked like it was decaying. The makeup was pretty
good. It was like, the ring, yeah, the makeup was really good
on the vengeful spirit, yeah,well,

LA (18:44):
and even when the little face comes up out of the water,
eyes, eyes up, that's it. That'sall you see. It was, it

Berly (18:52):
was creepy as fuck. Yeah, Sam and Dean jump in.

LA (18:55):
They keep going under, trying to find him nothing. They
can't find anything. And thenJake slowly walks in, takes his
jacket off, is apologizing toPeter, asking him to take him
instead of Lucas. And then hegoes under. Peter gets him, and
then dean makes a very dramaticburst out of the water with

(19:18):
Lucas, yeah,

Berly (19:20):
and save the day. They hung on that shot a little long.
It was Yeah, but it was prettyYeah, so I won't, I won't fault
them for it. Yes.

LA (19:30):
So next day, Sam and Dean are ready to leave, and Andrea
Lucas and Lucas see them off,Andrea gives Dean a kiss. He
gets all these kisses as heleaves these towns. And

Berly (19:40):
we got a sneak peek of sammy's Tum Tum. Oh yes, there's
that marquee it was, you have toblink and you'll miss it. But
there's a little Marky Markmoment where his like underwear
is sticking out of the top ofhis pants, and you get his
little Tum Tum. And didn't yousay you spotted his mic wire?
Mike wire, yeah.

LA (19:55):
But thankfully, at this point, Lucas is over his trauma.
He's talking again. Yay. AndDean tells him the most
important phrase that he needsto remember, Zeppelin rules, of
course, and that's it. That wasthat, yet again,

Berly (20:09):
the Winchester save the day, of course. So I thought
this was a fun episode. Yeah, Iliked this one better than the
Wendigo. Even though I enjoyedthe Wendigo, it was just very
different, yeah, and a lotthey're very different from one
to the next. So far, I agree, like tonally, the same, but just
different. So I'm I'm enjoyingthat. Now, as far as the lore,

(20:33):
as you already said, we've got avengeful ghost. And technically,
this is the second vengefulghost that we've encountered,
because the woman in white wasalso a vengeful ghost. What is a
vengeful ghost? So in mythologyand folklore, a vengeful ghost,
or a vengeful spirit is said tobe the spirit of a dead person
who returns from the afterlifeto seek revenge from a cruel,

(20:56):
unnatural or unjust death. Incertain cultures where funeral
and burial or cremationceremonies are important, such
vengeful spirits may also beconsidered as unhappy ghosts of
individuals who have not beengiven a proper funeral, and this
is all from Wikipedia. Theconcept of a vengeful ghost

(21:18):
seeking retribution for harmthat it endured as a living
person goes back to ancienttimes and is part of many
cultures. According to suchlegends and beliefs, they roam
the world of the living asrestless spirits seeking to have
their grievances redressed, andmay not be satisfied until they

(21:38):
have succeeded in punishingeither their murderers or their
tormentors. So a lot of thecultural references are all
women. So of course, of course, because we're vengeful psycho
bitches who are going to comeback from the dead to haunt you,
we're hysterical. Women.
Hysterical. We're so crazy.
Anyway, I did manage to find astory about little boy, however,

(22:05):
oh, this is a story of Tanaka, the Drowned ghost. And it's a
ghostly haunting hailing fromthe village of Ola. Am I saying
that right on the Big Island ofHawaii?

LA (22:19):
Hola, ha, yeah,

Berly (22:20):
I'm sure. Oh, o, l, a, apostrophe, a, aloha. I don't
know Aloha. I'm not sure, and Idon't trust Google pronunciation
stuff anymore. But anyway, in1947 while neighborhood kids
were playing on the shore of apond, one of them fell in and
disappeared beneath the waves.
The boy to the pond or theocean. The said pond, okay, but

(22:42):
it could be ocean. This isn'tnecessarily something that's
factual. Oh, okay. This is justa story of a boy. You don't say
all right, yeah. So our whole Isthere any truth to the lore
thing? I don't know, but thiswas a story I was able to find.
So the boy Tanaka did notservice. When divers entered the

(23:04):
water to rescue him, they foundthe dead boy sitting on a rock
at the very bottom of the pond.
His eyes and mouth were open ashippie calmly sat down on the
rock and waited to die. Oh, wow.
Years later, at noon, anotherboy was walking about 50 yards
behind his father along thepond's beaches. So it sank pond,

(23:26):
but beach makes me think, ocean.
Yeah. Oh, well, take it up withobscure ban dash
legend.fandom.com, suddenly, thelittle boy with his dad, he fell
in and screamed to his fatherthat he was being pulled into
the water. When divers enteredthe water, they found the boy

(23:49):
sitting on the bottom of thepond, arms at his sides, eyes
and mouth open and swaying toand fro in the current.
Fortunately, the other boy wasbrought to the surface in time
to save his life. Oh, good. Andthen the other drowned ghost,
vengeful spirit that I couldthink of within recent memory,

(24:10):
again, not true. Was from thatmovie, what lies beneath, with
Michelle Pfeiffer and HarrisonFord. Did you ever see that in
it was so good. Yeah, that moviecame out in the year 2000 that's
a good one. It's a good one. Soif you haven't seen that movie,
I don't want to spoil it foranybody who hasn't seen it

(24:31):
before, but it's really good.
Talk about cinematography, theydid some crazy things with shots
where Michelle Pfeiffer, likemorphs into the vengeful ghost
and whatnot. And it's got somemystery to it. It's a really
good story about two greatactors, two amazing actors,
about a vengeful ghost too, adrowned ghost, so, oh, did I

(24:55):
just spoil it? No. Okay, no.
But. Anyways, that's what I havefor lore. I couldn't find
anything, you know, factual, yeah, it was all legends. And of
course, yeah, honestly, Icouldn't find a whole lot about
vengeful ghosts who had died inwater. There is another cultural

(25:15):
ghost, I believe it's Japan, where they have a name for the
ghost, and it's basically goesto diet C, I think it's, it's
has something to do with boatsand whatnot, but this was the
one that was like a kid, alittle boy, so this is the story
I chose to go with. Okay, well,it's creepy. It's still creepy,
nonetheless, like picturing thelittle boy just sitting down

(25:36):
there with his eyes and mouthopens swing to and fro and no,
thank you. So to close out thisepisode, the iconic quote that I
chose was from Andrea, and thiswas after she walked them to the
motel, because apparently turnleft and walked two blocks was

(25:57):
too hard of directions for Dean.
She said, It must be hard withyour sense of direction, never
being able to find your way to adecent pickup line. Oh, cheers,
learn.
