Berly (00:01):
Music. Welcome to denim
wrapped nightmares, Tipsy
exchange Podcast where weexplore the supernatural series,
episode by episode, over
LA (00:11):
drinks, we'll discuss the
lore the gore and what we adore
about the Winchesters and theiradventures.
Berly (00:17):
I'm Burleigh and I'm a
new fan of the series.
LA (00:20):
I'm LA, and I'm here long
for the ride. Now let's get
Berly (00:27):
tipsy. Hello. La,
LA (00:28):
hello. Barely. Did that
sound weird?
Berly (00:32):
No, I'm just realized I
started recording and I have no
idea what I'm going to say next.
Oh,
LA (00:36):
well, you know, who knows?
Who knows what's going to comeout of our mouths. I mouths. So
Berly (00:45):
last episode, we were in
the depths, below, in the deep,
in the deep, and this episode,we were high in the sky. Yeah,
that's true. Before we starttalking about phantom traveler,
let's do a quick recap of wherewe were last week with dead in
the water well
LA (01:06):
and dead in the water. Sam
and Dean were investigating a
series of mysterious drowningsthat were just written off of
suicides in this lake. It was alake, right? It was late, yeah.
They discovered the spirit of alittle angry boy, little angry,
angry little boy. He
Berly (01:19):
was so angry, rightfully
so that had the
LA (01:21):
power to travel, travel
through water, and take revenge
on certain people in this townthat was like a deep, dark,
covered up secret that wasburied long ago with him,
basically with him, right? Yes.
And then dean formed a bond witha little kid that was so cute.
They shared artwork sweet, andhe seemed to have the power
premonition. And he kind of putall the pieces together for he,
(01:45):
he kind of basically solved thecase for them. I feel like, I
think too, yeah, you know. Andthen it ends with, you know,
Dean saving him in the end. And
Berly (01:55):
I actually read somewhere
they film in Vancouver. I think,
Oh, yeah. So like that water hadto have been cold.
LA (02:03):
Yeah? Damn. I hope they had
some heaters nearby, right? Yay.
Do you think they had to takeall their clothes off and, like,
step into, like, a little saunaor something? I,
Berly (02:15):
in my mind, that's what I
want. Jensen Ackles had to do
that.
Unknown (02:19):
Yes, yes,
Berly (02:21):
for sure, yeah, yeah.
Well, this week, the episodestarted off, Phantom traveler
starts off in an airport. We seea man, and he is obviously not
okay,
LA (02:36):
yeah, like he's struggling.
He's struggling big
Berly (02:39):
time. It starts showing,
like, this really peaceful,
serene ocean scene.
LA (02:45):
I was like, Oh, we're on,
like, on an island somewhere. I
Berly (02:48):
was really excited. And
then he pops up out of nowhere,
and it's like, like, he doesn'teither snort, like
LA (02:53):
the overhead of the airport
noise, oh, come on. I
Berly (02:58):
totally thought he had
just snorted a line the way he
came up looking all disheveled, and everything I could see that,
yeah, I was like, what ishappening? He ends up going to
the bathroom. And it's kind ofrevealed to us that he's a
nervous flyer, like he'sterrified to get on this plane.
And there's another passenger inthe airport that, I guess was
(03:18):
trying to calm him down and makehim feel better. Failure.
LA (03:21):
He failed. I was just, what
did he say? He's like, I mean,
one of the chances, like, 20something 1001 like, leaves
restroom. He's like, Yeah,thanks.
Berly (03:31):
Thanks for that. Thanks,
buddy. So he's splashing water
on his face, and thismysterious, like smog monster,
honestly, you
LA (03:39):
know what it reminded me up
comes out of the vent. What I
just was like, oh, black moldscoming out physical in a
physical, that's what it lookslike. So
Berly (03:47):
when I was in college, I
had this prank call that I was
doing one night, because all thedorm rooms at the college had
the same numbers at thebeginning, and then just any
random numbers at the end wouldget you somewhere on campus. So
I was calling a bunch of peoplebecause we had the landlines.
Not everybody had caller ID andall that. And I would tell them
(04:07):
that there was a black moldoutbreak and that they needed to
clean out their fridge in theirdorm room and tell me what was
in it. And I remember there wasthis one girl who, at the time,
I thought she must have been acomplete fucking idiot, but
looking back on it, I think shewas pranking me back, because
she kept me on the phone for areally time, asking questions
(04:30):
about the mold and smells andwhat should she do. And it just
got to where it was, like it wasnot even funny anymore. I
LA (04:37):
was like, Oh, my God,
Berly (04:38):
I want this to be over.
LA (04:40):
Oh, that's funny.
Berly (04:42):
I miss Frank call. Oh, my
god, so good.
LA (04:45):
So what was it? What's the
movie, um, with Adam Sandler,
where he's he he gets cancer andhe's dying. Funny People. Funny
People. Have you seen that? Idon't know. Well, at the
beginning, because him and JedApatow were roommates in
college. Okay? And Judd doesthat movie. I think he directs
it, or produces or something.
But anyway, at the beginning, itshows them in college making
prank calls. It's Adam Sandlermaking a bunch of prank calls.
(05:08):
And like, I think Linda orGaroppolo, Lisa, Linda groppilo.
Oh, what is her name? Anyway?
Some other people that have, like done well in their stars
now, or whatever, but they wereall there, like cracking up. And
it's funny. It's just kind offunny to see them young and
doing that shit.
Berly (05:29):
I did not have video
evidence of me doing this. We
got it. We got off track inrecord time for this. But
anyway, so he's in the bathroom.
This black smog mold, whateveryou want to call it comes
drifting out of the vent, and hesees it in the mirror, and he's
just like, and he turns aroundand like goes in through his
eye. I think it was, yeah, likegoes into him. And basically
(05:52):
he's now possessed. His eyes areblack, yeah. So he goes and gets
on the plane. And as he'sgetting on, a flight attendant
notices he's got black eyes. Shelike, tells him, hey, oh, your
seat. It's that way, where she'slike, at the front of the plane,
which I thought was kind of odd, yeah. Did you think they were
(06:14):
gonna turn the other way intothe cockpit? But anyway, so he
turns around. It's like, oh,thank you. And like, has these
black eyes, so she sees it, andlike, oh. Then he goes and sits
down. So then once they're up inthe air, he gets up after a
little bit, and he walks towardthe back of the plane and goes
to this emergency exit. Andthere's this guy who's sitting
(06:36):
in his seat looking back at him, like, What the fuck are you
doing? And he like, looks overhis shoulder so the guy sees his
black demon eyes. He's kind ofsmiles before he opens the
emergency exit gets sucked outof the plane, and the plane ends
up getting totally fucked fromthis, and they end up crashing.
Did
LA (06:57):
you see like when the air
baskets go down? And that guy
that had seen him. He was, like, very huge, like, sucking that
oxygen. I
Berly (07:05):
would have been freaking
out for sure. Yeah, have you
ever seen the picture? I don'tthink it was an actual picture.
I think it's like an art orrendition, artists rendition,
actually, of that one co pilotthat their window on the front
of the plane. Whoever installedit used the wrong size bolts,
and so when they were up in theair, the window actually popped
(07:27):
off, and the co pilot hadunbuckled and was getting up to
go to the bathroom or something, and he got sucked out of the
plane, and some other guy hadwalked in, like, right as it
happened, and grabbed the guy'sarms and held on to him for 15
minutes. Wow. While the otherpilot made an emergency landing
to get down, I've never heardthat they both survived. Both of
(07:51):
them got really bad frostbite.
And the guy who got sucked outof the plane, I think he had
some fractures and maybe somebroken bones, but they both
lived. Wow.
LA (07:59):
That's a that's an
incredible story so
Berly (08:02):
crazy. Look that up. I
can't remember what it was like,
what the flight was, or when itfucking
LA (08:07):
hero.
Berly (08:08):
I can't imagine being
that quick like I just imagine I
would have been so shocked andterrified that what I was seeing
that I would have frozen thatguy who jumped into action and
grabbed that guy, like this guy,I
LA (08:20):
make really poor decisions
when I'm jacked up adrenaline.
Berly (08:24):
I just don't think I
would have had a nation to grab
him. Like, that's awesome thathe grabbed him. Was he,
LA (08:29):
like, was it just, like, a
passenger, or what? See if I can
find it, or, like, maybe XML No,
Berly (08:34):
it was. It was somebody
they were in the cockpit. So,
okay, okay, let me see here. Oh,
LA (08:39):
my God, that's insane. And
what was he holding onto to be
able to keep him,
Berly (08:46):
you know, in the somebody
else came in and was holding
him, it was like a human crap.
What's the game? The monkeygame? What is it? Where you,
like, hook the monkey arms andtry to make the longest what is
it? Barrel of Monkeys? I don'tknow. Okay, so while an aircraft
was flying over, did caughtakshire, Oxford Shire and
improperly installed windowscreen panel. Okay, I already
(09:07):
told her all that BritishAirways Flight 5390, this
happened in June 1990
Unknown (09:17):
Oh, wow. How
Berly (09:19):
crazy. Oops. We did it
again. Okay, okay, so this plane
goes down, yeah. And then we cutto Dean in his bed in the motel,
and the camera did this, like, nice ass up, slow pant. Yeah, he
was totally ass up. The cameradid this nice like slow, pan up
(09:43):
his body, from his feet to hisface. We rewound it. We
appreciate it. It was so nice.
We watched it twice. So thathappened, then Sam comes in and
wakes him up, startles Dean, andit turns out Sam hasn't. Really
been sleeping. We kind of findthis out that Sam's not doing so
good. He's having nightmares.
(10:06):
Dean is kind of worried abouthim. Dean claims maybe sleep,
yeah. He's like, You need tosleep. And Dean's like, I never
get scared. But then he has, like, this giant, uh, yeah. It
made me think of like crocodiledid. Like, this is a lot huge.
Like,
LA (10:21):
when we were watching it, I
was like, um, that's a bit much
like I could understand having, like, a switchblade that you
could pop out or something, orpull, you know, under your bed,
but a huge, like, you could cutyourself on that if you just
casually fasten your hand underthe pillow and slice your arm.
Like it was ridiculous. I
Berly (10:39):
thought it was just,
LA (10:40):
I mean, it was a nice it was
a beautiful knife. It was
Berly (10:44):
impressive. So while
they're talking and chatting,
Dean's cell phone rings, andit's this guy who had known his
dad from this past, likepoltergeist. They kind of talk
about it a little bit when theymeet up, kind of thing. So Dean
is like, yeah, we'll come helpyou. So Sam and Dean go meet
him, and they're in like anaircraft carrier, or maybe it's
(11:09):
like, where they hanger, yeah, hanger. I don't know. They don't
really explain where they are,but the guy basically tells them
about the plane and howsomething doesn't seem right.
Once they get to his office, heplays for them this, I guess
it's like the black box orsomething like a message from
(11:29):
the plane at the time of thecrash. And there's some weird
noises that don't sound normal.
So Dean and Sam were like, Okay,we're gonna, we're gonna look
into it. They asked for a copyof the recording, and of course,
Sam ends up finding another EVPthat says no survivors. But
they're like, What the fuck thatdoesn't make sense. There were
(11:57):
seven survivors, so what's thisabout? Gotta go find them before
they find the EVP, the friend, the dad friend, I don't remember
his name. I didn't take a notethe airplane guy. He's like,
Yes, I'll send you the flightrecords, I'll send you the
passenger records, I'll send youthe recording. And they were
like, can we see the wreckage?
(12:18):
He said, I can't help you withthat. So Dean went to quick copy
or whatever, went to the copyshop and somehow drafted up some
believable Homeland Securityidentification. Okay,
LA (12:33):
so I hear me out, like I get
how he could, like, do the
identification card or whatever.
Where does he get these badgesbecause he flashed a whole they
had badges when they flash himat the guy,
Berly (12:44):
he's Dean Winchester.
LA (12:46):
I mean, he can do anything.
He's thrifty, because realthrifty. He's got all kinds of
identifications and differentbadges. He just pops out of
nowhere to go, this is his life.
It's the family business, Iguess the family business daddy
taught him. Well, I guess daddy, where's
Berly (13:01):
he at? When's he coming
back? We'll get to him. We'll
find him. After they make theirbadges. Sam is like, well, we
have to go get some suits aswell. Gotta look alike. We gotta
look the part. Yeah? So thenthey go get some suits, which is
nice, yeah?
LA (13:13):
It surprises me that they
don't try to look the part more
often. They're always just intheir like, shirt, civilian
jackets, yeah? So they
Berly (13:20):
go get suits. They look
like some nice little men in
black. I think, I think one ofthem makes a joke that they look
like the Blues Brothers. Samneeded to have fixed his hair,
though, if they were gonna, ifthey were gonna look the part
believable, yeah, yeah.
LA (13:32):
And they're so young, like
they are,
Berly (13:36):
they got better with age.
Oh, for sure, like I'm gettingabout me, I want to skip ahead
10 years get to the good stuff.
So before they get the suits, actually, I skipped a section,
they go to a psychiatrichospital and visit one of the
survivors. And it's the guy thatwe were talking about who saw
(13:57):
the door fly open and saw theblack eyes and all of that. So
he tells them what he saw, andhe's convinced he's crazy and
all of that, but Sam and Deanget the information out of him
that they need. Then they alsovisit the widow of the guy who
got possessed by the black mold, and she's telling them about her
(14:18):
husband, and he's just a normalguy. Because at first they're
thinking that this is some sortof supernatural being, that it's
not a human. So now she'stelling them about him, and
they're like, Okay, so it'sdefinitely a human. But how did
he have the strength to openthat door while the plane was in
flight? Because I think theysaid it was like two tons of
(14:40):
pressure or something like that, that a human would not have been
able to do that. And that's whenthey start thinking, okay, maybe
he was possessed by something.
So they kind of start puttingthings together, innocent old
dentist, poor guy with acidreflux. I remember, I. Yeah, so
after that is when they go checkout the wreckage. So they've got
(15:02):
their suits on, they've gottheir cool new badges. They go
check out the wreckage, and theyactually find sulfur on the
emergency exit door, whichapparently is also a sign of
demonic possession. I
LA (15:18):
learned that from the
wonderful movie Constantine. I
Berly (15:21):
think they're doing a
sequel to that. Finally, they
are,
LA (15:24):
and I'm so excited. And I
like, I really, really loved
that movie. So I when I heardthat he it was one of his
favorites, and he would love todo the role again. I was so
excited now that it's gonnahappen. I'm, I'm I'm stoked. I
am very excited.
Berly (15:39):
I'm excited too. I hope
they bring back the guy who
played Satan. Oh, my God, PeterStormare. I love those
performance. It was so brief, yeah, so memorable. I wonder
LA (15:48):
if they're friends, because
he was in, um, John Wick too. I
think the first one, I don'tknow, yeah, but I love, I like
Peter Stormare. He always playslike an oddball,
Berly (15:57):
yeah, yeah. Anyway, so
while they're doing all this, we
kind of get a flash to anotherone of the survivors from the
plane. His name's Chuck, and hewas actually the plane's pilot,
yes, and he's kind of, he'sstressing traumatizing. He's
stressing big time. And he'swith a friend, and the friend is
trying to get him to just, let'sjust go take a flight together,
(16:18):
just the two of us, you know, get your bicycle. Yeah, it's
like, riding a bicycle, calmdown. And like, he's obviously
stressing about it, like, whowouldn't be whenever you were in
something like that? And so ashe's sitting there stressing,
the friend is like, okay, it'sall gassed up. I'm gonna go,
he's gonna go do something. Andso the pilot is sitting there on
(16:40):
the couch, and then the blackmold comes coming out of the
vent again, and it comes over, and it goes into the pilot's
eyes. And he goes outside andwhere he was obviously, like,
traumatized and stressinginside. Now he goes outside,
he's like, Yeah, let's go. Andhe's like, all excited. Why did
the friend not go? What the fuckis happening? Yeah, it
LA (17:00):
would've been like, just a
minute ago. You were like, about
were, like, about to have apanic attack, and now you're
excited to go, like,
Berly (17:05):
what happened? What's
LA (17:06):
happening? Yeah, this
Berly (17:07):
is weird, but apparently
that did not raise any red flags
for the friend. So they get intothe plane, and they're flying up
above and, like, obviously thefriend is making facial
expressions as the pilot istalking like that. He knows
something's off. He's just notsaying anything. And then the
pilot is like, how long have webeen up? And the friend even
(17:27):
catch that, yeah. The friend islike, 40 minutes. And he's like,
okay, cool. Knocks out. Thefriend locks and his eyes go
black as he like, pushes thecontrollers, and obviously he's
like, nose diving down. Thispoor farmer sees them coming,
and they crash and kills themboth. I totally didn't catch
that about the time. Well, that's why, later in the show,
(17:51):
why? Like, everything is sourgent, right? Because they only
had 40 minutes. Yeah. So cutback to the hotel. Sam and Dean
are looking up demons, possession, all kinds of things
on their laptop. They're tryingto figure out, you know, what is
going on here. And Sam findsJapanese item that states that
disasters are caused by certaindemons. So a disaster demon, so
(18:16):
to speak, or chaos demon, orwhatever you want to call them.
And Dean says that it'ssomething bigger than usual, and
it is kind of like I wish dadwas here. And then his phone
rings, and it's the airplane guywho called them originally. His
name's Jerry, and he's got morebad news. And he tells them what
(18:38):
happened to chuck So Dean andSam go and check out, like, news
sites and stuff that talk aboutwhere Chuck crashed, and that's
where they kind of go and visitwhich was in, I wrote this down,
hang on, which was in Nazareth, right? So that has some biblical
relevance. And so they were kindof making jokes about, like, oh
(18:58):
yeah,
LA (18:59):
we gotta go check out the
demon and Nazareth kind of
thing. Oh, in the 40 the 40minutes, right? Biblical, 40
means death. Great, great.
Berly (19:07):
So happy to be middle
aged and find out that 40 means
death. Yeah, thanks guys. Thanks
LA (19:13):
a lot. So
Berly (19:14):
they're connecting all
these points. Now we've got the
40 minutes. We've got sulfur onboth crashes. And again, they're
talking about the no survivors, the demons, finishing the job.
So they put everything together, kind of from that. So then they
check on all the othersurvivors, and they basically
(19:35):
clear everybody, except for one,and that was the flight
attendant. They call her astewardess on the show quite a
bit so outdated, we'll updateit. Flight Attendant Amanda
Walker, so the girl who wasdirecting everybody to their
seats and saw the demon's eyesas well, they find out from her
(19:55):
sister that she has gone back towork and she's about to get on a
plane. Right, right? So theyhurry to the airport, and Dean
gets on this, like, emergencyphone thing. I've never seen
these in the airports before, and pages her with an emergency,
says it's an emergency. He hasto talk to her. And so she gets
on the phone, and they claimthat her sister has been in an
(20:17):
accident and that she needs tocome to a hospital. And she's
like, um, fuck you. I literallyjust got off the phone with my
sister. She's sitting at homestudying, who is this? And
somehow she comes to theconclusion that it's like an ex
boyfriend's friend trying to gether attention or something. And
so Dean just kind of playsalong. And what I loved about
(20:38):
this scene was Sam like tryingto get in Dean's face trying to
listen like what's trying toeavesdrop on what's happening.
It was so cute. And I don't knowif the director told them to do
that or if it was a decision onJared padalequis part, but it
was just perfect. It was such abrother thing to do. Yeah,
little brother. Yeah. I lovedit. It was It happened pretty
quickly, but I absolutely adoredthat. It was so cute.
LA (21:02):
I also liked in the scene
where he was like, Oh yeah, the
man's he's pretty broken up. Imean, he's pretty pathetic. And
she's like, really, oh, likethat. Like they made her happy
that he was pathetic about her.
Berly (21:13):
So after they talked to
her, she's basically like, I'll
talk to the boyfriend whenever Iget back and hangs up. So now
they're like, Fuck, what do wedo now? And Sam says we're gonna
have to get tickets and go geton the flight. We don't have any
other choices. It's the only waythat we're gonna be able to stop
it. And then we find out Dean isterrified of flying. He's got a
little problem. And I think it'sso funny, because when we
(21:34):
started out the episode, Deanwas Mr. I'm not afraid of
anything, right? And now we'rein the airport, and he is
clearly terrified. So I thoughtthat was a really cute parallel
of No Not being afraid ofanything like demons, ghosts,
whatever. None of that shitscares me, but an airplane, and
(21:56):
he is so scared, like honestlycontemplating letting these
people die because he doesn'twant to get on a plane.
LA (22:05):
But Sam's a good little
brother. Takes care
Berly (22:06):
of Yes, he is. He even
offers to go and do it himself,
but Dean is not going to let himdo that. So they buy two tickets
and they go get on the plane.
When I was
LA (22:15):
in high school and we went
on our senior trip to wasn't
Cabo, where did we go? Can'tremember, somewhere in Mexico,
but our friend Karina wasterrified of flying. She had
never flown before, and I hadflown quite a few times since
then. And so I was an ass. I wasnot like, Sam. I was an asshole.
And I was like, turbulence.
There's gonna be, like, takingoff. I was like, oh my god, this
(22:38):
is normal. I was, like, tryingto scare a chair. I'm an
asshole, I'm an asshole. But itwas just, I mean, she knew I was
joking with her, but at the sametime, like, looking back like I
was an asshole. I should havebeen. I should have been more
like Sam and been a good friend.
Berly (22:55):
Well, once they're on the
plane, Sam is being a very
supportive brother. He's tryingto help keep Dean calm. And he
kind of reminds them that weonly have 40 minutes, right? You
know, they're the airplane'sgonna go down when we're 40
minutes in the air, so we've gotto figure out who's possessed.
Well, yeah, I
LA (23:12):
think he said at that point
they were already at 32 minutes.
Yeah, they were on a timecrunch, big time. And Sam also
mentioned about how he wasscared and vulnerable that the
take
Berly (23:23):
him, yeah? So he was
like, You have to calm down,
yeah, because that's gonna makeyou vulnerable to possession if
you're freaking out. So
LA (23:32):
makes so much sense from the
original guy, the pilot, right?
Because
Berly (23:36):
we find out pretty early
on that the stewardess, I just
did it. The flight attendant wasnot the one who was possessed.
Which were there was thishilarious little incident where,
you know, Sam is like, Okay, first dean is like, we have holy
water. I'll go spray her withholy water. And Sam's like, No,
we can be a little more subtlethan that. Just the name of God
(23:58):
should make the demon flinch. Besure you say it in Latin. And so
Dean goes the back, and he'sflirting with the flight
attendant a little bit, and thenhe just randomly says it
LA (24:09):
like you would think, Dean
like being smoothie, as he is
most of the time that he could, like, work that into a sentence
and conversation. But no, no, he
Berly (24:18):
just waits until there's
a pause and it's just like
Christo,
LA (24:22):
just, like, throws it out
there. She's like, Huh, what? So
Berly (24:25):
He says it again, and
she's like, what? He just
awkwardly, like, leaves it'salways
LA (24:29):
with it. Like, Christo,
like, with a question.
Berly (24:34):
He just awkwardly, like,
sidesteps out of the way and
just goes back to the seat. Andit's like, okay, so it's not
her. So then they get theirlittle EMF detectors, or
whatever it is that they haveout, and they're walking up and
down the aisle, and people arelooking at them like, What the
fuck are you doing? Rightfullyso, because they're trying to
figure out who's possessed. Sothey get up toward the cockpit.
(24:55):
Dean's little tool starts goingoff in his hand, and. And one of
the CO pilots is like, comingout of the bathroom or
something. And so Dean looks upand he says, Christo. And the
dean, the guy obviously shiversand looks over his shoulder and
has black eyes, and then goesinto the cockpit. So Dean's
like, Fuck, it's the co pilot.
So then they recruit the flightattendant to help them in a very
(25:17):
dramatic little scene, and gether to go get the co pilot. So
they're spraying him with holywater, and Sam is doing an
exorcism of sorts, and we foundout earlier that there's two
parts to the exorcism. The firstpart is to get the disaster
demon out of the pilot, but thenthey become even more powerful
(25:38):
and are able to causedestruction and chaos on their
own. And once it's out of thepilot, there's a second part
that will get rid of themcompletely. They finally get
through that after quite a bitof a tussle, yeah, they get it
out, and then the plane startsnose diving down, and Sam had
dropped their dad's journal atthis point, so there's this very
(25:59):
tense moment where Sam's tryingto find the journal and having
to reach under people's feet. Ofcourse, he gets it and says the
rest of the exorcism just intime for the plane to pull up
and land safely, and everyonesurvives. And they even show the
co pilot talking to people abouthow he doesn't even remember
(26:19):
getting on the plane. Yeah, thathe has no memory of anything. So
even he survived. So after allof this, they go talk to Jerry,
and he's like, thanking them foreverything they've done. And
Dean is like, How'd you get mynumber? By the way, I just got
this phone. I haven't had itvery long. And Jerry tells them
that their dad's voicemail istelling people, if it's an
(26:43):
emergency, called Dean, andleaving Dean's phone number,
which I would be so pissed ifI'm looking for my dad. I've
been calling you, been textingyou. You can't reply, but you
can update your outgoingvoicemail message to include my
new phone number that youobviously have gotten in my
missed calls and text messages.
(27:06):
They were kind of shocked, andthey call their dad's phone to
check and see if it's true, andthey hear their dad doing that,
leaving the outgoing message hasbeen changed. It's their dad's
voice saying, if this is anemergency call, Dean, they're
kind of like, What the fuck? Whyhasn't he contacted us? And they
drive off in the Olin pala asthe screen fades to black. That
(27:32):
was phantom traveler. Yes, not alot of Gore in this episode. No,
there wasn't any Gore at all, really. I mean, the goriest
thing that happened was when thepilot was getting sprayed with
holy water, there was someburning, sizzling stuff going
on. And, you know, again, adore.
I like what this episode did fordeveloping the brother
(27:52):
relationship and that slow panup Dean's body at the beginning
of the episode was real nice, but so that's the adore and the
gore. Let's get into the lore.
La, what you got for me?
LA (28:10):
Well, I mean, I we just have
a couple of mysterious flight
crashes, right?
Berly (28:18):
Because obviously we
can't find any real disaster,
demons, stories, chaos. I mean, there might be there might be.
LA (28:27):
So the first one was in 1996
July 17, 1996 minutes after it
took off from New York's KennedyInternational Airport, a Boeing
747, was headed to Paris, and itexploded, I think 12 minutes
after takeoff, exploded. Yikes.
The flight departed at 8:19pm,in muggy, but like pretty,
(28:47):
fairly good weather, and it blewapart in a fiery explosion. 12
minutes later, among the deadwere 18 crew members, 212
passengers, including 16students and five chaperones
from Pennsylvania'sMontoursville area high schools,
French club, holy shit. Yeah.
(29:10):
After this happened, it took, itwas a four year end of
investigation into what happenedfour years so it's like that
scene where they were in thehangar and all the pieces of the
plane were there, right? Theydid the same thing and but it
took them four years to gothrough all that and figure out
what happened. What happened?
Well, there's theories andstuff. A lot of witnesses say
that the crash, they reportedseeing an explosion in the night
(29:32):
sky, followed by the shower offlaming debris. But some of them
said that there was a missilethat was headed toward the plane
right before it exploded. Sothey were thinking like
terrorist attack, you know. Butof course, this four year
investigation said no, that'snot what happened. Allegedly,
the source that led to theexplosion was never actually
(29:53):
discovered. But theinvestigation concluded that the
Crash's cause was not aterrorist attack, like some.
Some witnesses say, but anelectrical failure that ignited
a nearly empty central wing fueltank. It was a 25 year old
aircraft this event. It's one ofthe deadliest plane crashes in
our US history. But yeah, sothey think it's that something
(30:13):
ignited in this wing fuel tank, and
Berly (30:18):
that's what started it
unexplained crashes. I know
there's a lot of famousdisappearing planes. Yeah, we
talked about some of thosebefore, yeah. I
LA (30:28):
mean, the good thing. I
mean, sounds bad thing, but the
investigation of this aircraftwas like a big moment in
aviation history, and it's fromthis investigation that really
kind of fundamentally changedthe way aircrafts are designed
now, from just learning of howthis crash happened and
everything and what they foundin the wreckage, which to me, it
(30:48):
seems like it's a little weirdthat it took four years. Yeah,
Berly (30:51):
if it was just an
electrical thing, Why'd it take
four years? Yeah, so
LA (30:54):
this guy says that it was
due to a couple different
factors. He says, First, thetime it took to isolate the
circumstances that caused a veryrare event, the central fuel
tank explosion, which he had hadnever occurred with the 747,
before this plus, they appliedextra diligence to accommodate a
huge amount of pressure appliedfor many quarters to make
(31:16):
absolutely sure that this wasnot a result of A terrorist
operation or an errant missilefired by our or someone else's
nation, or some else's some youtry that again, or some other
nation's military, because a lotof people were like, was it
friendly fire? Like, thoughtthat? Like, maybe it was one of
ours that had set it off onaccident or something. Yeah, but
(31:38):
now that, like, 25 years later, since that crash, it's been the
safest years in commercialaviation aviation history, since
that crash, which I find odd, because I feel like I've heard
quite a few plane crash in thelast few years, but I guess they
weren't us ones. I don't know.
Yeah, I
Berly (31:54):
don't track that kind of
stuff. I don't either. I've only
heard about that guy gettingsucked out of the plane. That's
so crazy. All of these things,if disaster demons were real, I
see them doing stuff like this.
Yeah.
LA (32:06):
But anyway, so that's kind
of the gist of that flight and
what happened, and the investthe four fucking year
investigation. And then theother one was, which I think I
want to say that this was like arevenge plane killing Oh, and I
feel like there was another onein the last, like, oh, few
years. I feel like thatsomething similar happened, but
(32:27):
this was in 1999 Egypt, airwhich see, not America, not our
US. History was safest since the25 years. Anyway, this one
crashed off New England in 1999and killed 217, people, but it
was a deliberate crash and anact of revenge this guy, I'm
(32:47):
probably going to say thiswrong. Gamil l batauti. Batauti
had been reprimanded for sexualmisconduct, and the executive
who told him that he would likeafter all this happened in these
allegations that he wasn't goingto be allowed to fly us routes
again at which, basically, like, they make more money when it's
like overseas flights, I guessso if it's just International,
(33:11):
you don't make as much. But sohe's not allowed to do any more
flights to the US.
Berly (33:15):
We're going to keep that
sexual misconduct local, right?
Well,
LA (33:19):
and it's like, why just to
the US, right? So anyway, this
guy that reprimanded him is onboard this flight, which, why
would you get on a flight with aguy that you like,
Berly (33:29):
have, like, I wouldn't
assume that they were gonna
crash the plane.
LA (33:33):
I mean, still, I mean, I
would like something was wrong
Berly (33:38):
with that person. Oh,
they shot that was the next
logical action to take.
LA (33:43):
He was basically there were
allegations of sexual
misconduct, exposing himself toteenage girls and propositioning
hotel maids the fuck andstalking a female hotel stalking
female hotel guests. So all ofthis, like, while he's so
straight up predator, yeah, again, which, I guess, I'm
(34:04):
assuming he did all in, like, uniform and whatnot, because
otherwise, I don't know. I mean,he would have been taken in by
the cops rather than beingreprimand, which, well, I don't
know what their laws are like, but it's like, if he had that
going on, you would think he hada record and he wouldn't be
allowed to fly, right? I don'tknow. So on the flight was his
(34:25):
his superior, Hatem Rushdie, andhe's chief of Egypt airs Boeing,
747, 767, pilot group. So asafter Rushdie got on the flight,
he told him, this is your lastflight, I guess, albeit, touties
attitude was that this is yourlast flight, too, damn.
Berly (34:44):
So he, like reprimanded
him on the flight, yeah,
LA (34:47):
I guess so, yikes. Like
before they left, he was just
letting him know, which, again,I wouldn't tell him that you
arrived. So
Berly (34:55):
that makes a little bit
more sense to me. Like, yeah, I
still understand that. Itwouldn't have crossed his mind.
Find what happened next would bewhat happened how this person
would retaliate, but I wouldstill wait until they're in a
position to clock out right?
Like, you don't fire a person onMonday and tell them that they
work till the end of the week.
Do you wait until the end likeFriday? Yeah. Like, come on.
LA (35:18):
So one of the members of the
US team just said that it was
more revenge against Rushdiethan it was a suicide which, I
mean, he was pissed. Had
Berly (35:28):
to have been an
irrational also like, that's not
a logical thing to do.
LA (35:35):
The Black Box recordings
indicated that Rushdie had left
his first class seat and enteredthe cockpit, but as soon as he
left al batuti, who was supposedto fly the second five hour
section of this flight, he cameinto the cockpit, ordered the
younger first officer out of hischair, and just simply said, I
rely on God, switched off theautopilot and pushed the plane
into a dive. Oh yeah. So CaptainAhmed el hash Habashi, who had
(36:00):
been out of the cockpit, managedto struggle back in and shouted
at him, like, what's happening?
What's, what's, what are youdoing? What's happening? All the
Elbe towdy said, I rely on God.
So he was, he was having anepisode, or just, he was right.
That's not mentally, yeah, behavior. And so hibachi was
(36:21):
shouted, what is this? Did youshut the engines? He tried to
grab the controls and startedpulling up. He was shouting at
him to help him, pull up, pullup, pull up. But no, they were
already in a nosedive, and hedid manage to get it back up to
24,000 feet. But then they lostall power, and like the plane
just started breaking up fromthe stress.
Berly (36:41):
Why'd they lose power?
LA (36:43):
I guess, just from, like,
doing a nosedive and then going
right back up, like, Oh my God,I don't know. He said that he
thinks that he had the Albataudi had been looking at the
door, looking at the momentwhen, like, the moment Rushdie
was out of the cockpit, like, this was the most suitable
moment for him to fulfill, like, his vendetta against him, the US
(37:04):
heavily criticized Cairo forexploring the possibility that
Al Batali had deliberatelycrashed the plane. I don't know
why, but a top Egyptianinvestigator said that his
country would reject anysuggestion that Al Batali was to
blame. And that's like wherethis article ends, which I think
is so strange, like, clearly, like black box recordings, like
(37:27):
he was doing it on purpose, right? You know, so I don't know
weird, not
Berly (37:32):
rational behavior. I
thought that's what I got for
some crazy crashes, weird,Random Play had happened in the
world of supernatural, yeah,
LA (37:43):
maybe, maybe the demon got
into El buchati,
Berly (37:46):
right? Yeah, I don't
know. Sounds like he had some
demons before that flight. True.
True, true. He already had somedemons he was working through.
Well, I just wonder that otherone that, if that's really true
about it, the fuel, theelectrical and all that fuel
tank in the wing. I mean, considering that they ended up
making changes to actual designsfor planes after that, makes me
inclined to think that it wouldbe true. It just seems odd that
(38:09):
it took four years to come tothat conclusion, and the fact
that there were people who saidthey saw a missile, but then you
also said that there was debris, fiery debris, so maybe they saw
something break off beforeeverything else that they
thought was that. I don't know,it's crazy. It's just
LA (38:31):
weird, yeah, but that's
that, huh. That is that most
Berly (38:35):
mysterious plane
incidents are disappearances,
which I think are even weirder, yeah, where they just vanish and
they don't know where they are, that's fucking weird, even
whenever it's overseas. Like, Iunderstand that we don't even
know what's in the ocean, so Iget it, but it's just
LA (38:53):
what? Like, there's no
debris, like, nothing. Like,
they can't find a thing.
Berly (38:58):
You don't have any sort
of like, Tracker, like, I can
find my black box, yeah, but youcan't find the plane, right?
What is that about?
LA (39:07):
I don't know.
Berly (39:09):
All right. So favorite
quote from the episode to close
it out, yes, we were talkingabout baby brother Sam being a
good baby brother and trying tokeep deemed calm. They're
sitting in the plane, and itfirst shows them, and Dean is
humming a song. And so Sam looksat Dean and says, Are you
humming Metallica?
LA (39:29):
And Dean says, It calms me
down.
Berly (39:33):
Cheers. Thank you for
listening to denim wrapped
LA (39:38):
nightmares. Follow us on
Twitter or Instagram, leave a
review and let us know how wecan get involved in the fandom.
Berly (39:46):
This was fun,
LA (39:47):
jerk. It always is, bitch.
You.
