The episode begins with a newlywed couple encountering a creepy scarecrow, leading to the husband's disappearance. Berly (00:01):
Music. Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares, Tipsy
exchange Podcast where weexplore the supernatural series,
episode by episode, over

LA (00:11):
drinks, we'll discuss the lore the gore and what we adore
about the Winchesters and theiradventures.

Berly (00:17):
I'm Burleigh and I'm a new fan of the series.

LA (00:20):
I'm LA, and I'm here long for the ride. Now, let's get
tipsy. Hello, LA, hey there,Burley, how are you good?

Berly (00:31):
Doing good? Yeah, I'm happy.

LA (00:33):
Why the nip slip? Oh yes.
Well, I You were all about thenipple. I was all about those
arms and shoulders,

Berly (00:40):
finally. But first last week, we were in an asylum.
Yeah. So Sam and Dean saved acouple from an asylum and ended
up getting rid of this evildoctor, shrink guy, and most
importantly, at the end, actually, I should say, their

(01:02):
dad assigned them this case. Hesent them coordinates, oh yeah,
basically assigned them the caseto go figure it out at the
beginning of the show. And thenby the end of the show, dad
actually called. Daddy called soit got kind of a full circle
thing, and the asylum was verycool, very scary movie. Well

LA (01:25):
shy, yes, so

Berly (01:27):
well shot, honestly, like cinema quality. Again, I said
this last week, independentfilm. But still, film quality is
film quality. I thought it wasreally good episode. Yeah, I
agree. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Yes, and this one basicallypicked up, like, right where the
other one left off. Yeah, and weliked that. Yeah, they haven't
done that before. Yeah.

(01:48):
Normally, we don't really knowhow much time has passed and
what have you, but this one, like, picked up right from where
this one let off. So la tell, let's tell our listeners about
this week's episode, which istitled Scarecrow,

LA (02:04):
so it starts out and it says, One year ago, and we're in
burkittsville, Indiana, andthere's a newlywed couple in
this little it looks like alittle small town, and they're
leaving a restaurant, and thelocals have helped them, because
I guess they got lost andstopped for gas, and they send
them on their way. They haddinner. Sent them with an apple
pie. Very Pleasantville, yes, very much so. And as they're

(02:27):
saying goodbye, the husbandshakes the hand of this, this
older man that I guess works atthe shop, and his daughter
that's there, or his niece, I'msorry, notices his he's got
like, a tribal tattoo on hisforearm, and she's like, nice
tattoo. I thought that seemed alittle out of place, but then it
ends up becoming it's

Berly (02:47):
relevant later, yes, clearly they wanted us to see
that for sure. Yeah, and makemental note of it, right?

LA (02:54):
So they all say their farewells, and they take off.
They're driving down thehighway, and all of a sudden, in
this one spot, their cell phonesboth die and the lights on their
cars start going and that justthe car kind of dies, and they
they're on the side of the road, they see some lights from a
house kind of past some trees tothe in the distance. So they get

(03:14):
out to go check it out, and itlooks like they're in an apple
orchard, and there's this giantscarecrow just smack in the
middle of it. And, I mean, it'snot one of those, like, scrawny
scarecrows with this the hayhanging out of it. It's, he's
fucking creepy, yes. And he'sbig, like,

Berly (03:30):
he's very big chest big chested. Yeah, they gave it
hair, yeah, it had hair, yeah.

LA (03:36):
And so they're looking at it, and they're like, oh, that's
fucking creepy. And all of asudden, as they start to leave,
the woman sees the head move.
That was scary, yeah, they starthearing different noises, and
they start running becausethey're freaked out. And it's
they're just, they're bothrunning together, and then, out
of fucking nowhere, the guy justdisappears. He was gone.

Berly (03:56):
There was no noise. There was nothing. He just was, all of
a sudden, disappeared,

LA (04:00):
and she's like, this, or no, not his anymore. So that's the
last guy. She starts calling forhim. She's freaking out. She
keeps running, and sheeventually, like, stumbles over
something which ends up beinghis corpse,

Berly (04:11):
and his face was gone.
Yeah, it was ripped off. Yeah,it was pretty gory.

LA (04:15):
There's like, a figure that's closing in on her, her as
she screams, and it cuts. Soobviously that's scarecrow
coming after her. Then we cut topresent day. We're in another
hotel, motel, and it picks upright where the last one left
off, where Sam is taking thecall from daddy. That's where we
see Jensen. Let's the Yeah, thesheets slip a little. Barely got

(04:38):
her nip slip. She wanted Yes,and I got to see them, arms and
shoulders. It was all very nice.

Berly (04:43):
Yes in the background.
Sam's in the foreground. So youhad to, like, intentionally look
for it. Well, we

LA (04:49):
rebound. We've

Berly (04:50):
rebounded a couple of times. And they also show
Jeffrey Dean Morgan hiseyelashes. Yes, I've never
noticed before you

LA (05:02):
said that. And I looked and I was like, damn. Like, they're
they're very thick. Yes, they'replentiful. So and I was like, if
they were just a little bitlonger, too, I'd be super
jealous. I

Berly (05:11):
really wanted to take an eyelash curler to them. Could

LA (05:15):
you imagine him with some mascara on? Oh, my God,

Berly (05:18):
beautiful. Very jealous, but yeah, good,

LA (05:22):
good eye there. Yeah. So Sam's chatting with dad, and Dad
assures them that they're okay, but they just need to trust him.
He can't say where he is, but heis after the thing that killed
her mom, he says. He tells himit's a demon, yep, so we know
that now. And he tells them theyhave to stop looking for him.
And of course, Sam being thestubborn one, he is like, Oh no

(05:44):
No, Daddy, oh rebel ain'thappening. And dad's like,
getting angry. She was like, No,you got to listen to me, doesn't
he say? Like, that's an order orsomething, yeah. And I think
that's what, that's whattriggered Sam. He's like, Oh no,
Dad, take orders.

Berly (05:59):
What you like? When Sam works his jaw, he was working,
oh, my god, there.

LA (06:04):
Love it. I know. Now, in the meantime, you know our prodigal
son, Dean, I know it was hislittle hands out just right.
He's like, Give me the phone.
Give his phone, and it juststays there, like waiting,
honestly,

Berly (06:16):
for this very short, like, two minute scene. There's
just so much to look at. Therewas so much. We have the
eyelashes, we have the nipple,we have the shoulders, we have
the biceps. We have jaw working.
Oh, there's just, like, therewas so much we did. It was like,
it was a lot. We basically hadto watch

LA (06:33):
it more than once, of course, right? He very much
appreciated it. It was so much.
But it was really funny, becauseDean's we were watching, and I
even made the comment, thathand's still there. Yeah, he's
still arranged for that phone.
And so Sam finally gets visiblypissed and gives the phone to
Dean. And of course, Dean, like, takes right away. I thought he
dad hung up, which I thought youdid. Heartbreaking for Dean. I

(06:56):
was like, no, but he didn't. Andof course, I Beam B and D. And
he's like, yes, sir, takes thatorder from dad. Writes down, oh,
he's giving them names. He wantsthem. He wanted Sam to write
down some names. Sam was like,Fuck, no, but Dean, of course,
writes down the names, as Daddytells him, and yes, sir, we'll
take it. Take that order. We'redoing it. So they look at the

(07:17):
couple's names. It's threecouples that he gave them, and
they disappeared over a threeyear period on the same day in
April of each year

Berly (07:26):
as, like, the spring equinox or something, something
like that, something relevant.
Yeah.

LA (07:32):
So they get to chatting.
Sam's pissed. He thinks that, like, fuck this order dad gave
us. Why are we doing this? Weknow where he is because Sam, I
guess some somehow realized itwas from a payphone in
California.

Berly (07:43):
Yeah. Somehow, yeah, yeah. He said it was an area
code from Sacramento. And keepin mind, at the end of the last
episode, there was some tensionbetween the Winchester boys,

LA (07:53):
yeah, because the Sam's fucking rage out outed itself
and he shot

Berly (07:58):
his brother. Yeah, Sam got experimented on or possessed
or something by this doctor whoreleased Sam's inner rage. And
it turns out there was some ragetoward Dean, for sure, and that
didn't really get squared away.

LA (08:14):
No, Dean didn't want to have the fuzzy feelies talk, no, so
that's still going on, yeah,

Berly (08:20):
and now we've got dad on top of it, so there's just a lot
of just turmoil, yeah, and ragegoing on in the Impala on this
little trip right now,

LA (08:29):
the mixing bowl is mixing, so they get in this heated
discussion. As I said, Sam'sgung ho to go to California find
Dad, like, cut this bullshit. Wedon't need to be taking his
orders, doing his job for him, blah, blah. And Dean's writing
him, Hello, dad, telling us todo this to save people. You

(08:49):
know, we could be helpingsomebody. And it ends up that
Sam's just like, No, I'm out ofhere. He's like, I'm done. Yeah.
And get gathers his stuff andstarts taking off down the road.
And I mean, Dean, it's nice tohave he stands there, you know,
he waits for him and gives himthe chance. And Sam's like, no,
and of course, I'm like, that'sgoing to be a long walk there,

(09:10):
Sam. And so Dean takes off. Butbefore he he does, he tells Sam
How selfish he is.

Berly (09:19):
And Sam did remind Dean, like he said, How old were you
when mom died? You were four, and my girlfriend died six
months ago. So he's just kind oftrying to point out, like it's a
little fresh for me,

LA (09:32):
right? And so that makes sense, like, why he wants to go
find Dad, because dad's huntingwhatever this thing is,

Berly (09:37):
yeah, he wants I get too.
Yeah, he's, you know, killed mygirlfriend, I would like to get
some vengeance too, yeah,

LA (09:43):
but don't discredit Dean's pain and trauma, yeah,

Berly (09:47):
and Dean and Dean call them selfish, and then they
split their split their ways,right?

LA (09:52):
So we see Dean pulling into burkittsville, the plaintiff
Ville place, yes, and he pullsout his phone like goes. On his
contacts and finds Sam, and itlooks like he's like he wants to
call him, but he doesn't. And hemeets with one of the local
guys, Scotty, which I can'tremember if Scotty was there the
night with the first couple ornot. I feel like he was there,

(10:15):
but maybe not.

Berly (10:16):
I think it might have just been the aunt, uncle and
niece, but maybe you're right, maybe that fourth person was
there,

LA (10:24):
yeah, anyway, either way, he pulls up to this place called
Scotties, and he's like, let meget Scotty, because there's a
man sitting up front. And Scottyis not friendly, no,

Berly (10:34):
but, and he did call Dean on his alias. Oh, that's right,
which I caught the alias a whileback when it was, I think it was
Hamill and Ford and so now I'mwondering, oh, hey, yeah, if all
of their aliases have beensomething, I bet, and we just
haven't caught it, we're gonnahave to pay attention. We're
gonna have to do better aboutpaying attention to aliases.
This one was John Bonham, yeah, right away, Scott. He's

LA (10:56):
like, isn't that the drummer from Zeppelin? Yeah, yeah. I
think Dean's kind of taken back.
He's like, Oh, heavy metal fan.
Ooh, my kind of get but notreally. It's a classic rock
Yeah, same thing, not really. Sohe shows a picture, like a
missing person, picture of thecouple from the year before that
went missing. Asks Scotty, haveyou seen him? Scotty says, No,

(11:19):
but it's very obvious. Scotty'slike, got something. What's

Berly (11:23):
that song? That's like, Scotty, don't know. Isn't that a
song? Yeah, I

LA (11:27):
think there's something.
Anywho, then we go to Sam, who, somehow, the way they do this
sometimes, I mean, he's beenhitchhiking, walking, I can't
believe that he's been walkingbackwards for quite some time,
that he didn't see this girl, just in his way, but somehow he
stumbles upon her, and he'slike, oh, there's a beautiful
young girl there, and she's onher headphones, doesn't see him.

(11:50):
He taps her shoulder, scares theshit out of her. They get to
talking, oh my god. And thenthis was what bothered me. Is a
white van pulls up as they'rechatting. It's literally got the
cage behind the front seats, soit's like, caged in the back, no
windows, yeah. And he comes by,and the girl's like, okay,
picking up her stuff. She'sgetting in, and the guy in the

(12:11):
van's like, I'm not taking youto Sam. And so Sam's like, you,
you're gonna pick creepy van guyover me. And she's like, Oh
yeah, dumb bitch, well,

Berly (12:22):
but we find out by the industry that she could take
care of herself, okay,

LA (12:27):
but still, I, even if I could take care of myself, I
would have let Sam take

Berly (12:31):
care of me. I would have been with Sam in many ways. I
would have definitely picked Samover creepy van guy, for sure.
Yeah,

LA (12:39):
and then we're back to Dean.
He is talking with the is itgeorgesons? Georges? It's with a
J, which is Scandinavian. I knowthat spelling is Scandinavian,
but anyway, the georgesons arethe ones that the couple from
the year before were chattingwith had eaten, gave the apple
pie and said their goodbyes.

(13:03):
That's who the georgesons are,the aunt and uncle, yeah. And
they've got, like, a littlestore their niece recognizes, I
mean, Dee goes in there andshows the pictures again, and
the niece recognizes thehusband, because I guess she
probably had the hots for himwith that tattoo, right?

Berly (13:16):
And the aunt and uncle were like, No, we've never seen
them before, never, never, never. And then they the niece
was like, wait a minute, yeah, yeah. And so remember, that was
Red flag number one,

LA (13:26):
right? And she remembers, she specifically mentions his
tattoo, because that's what sheremembered. And they tell them
that they headed off towards thehighway, and Dean asks for those
directions. So, you know, sothen we're back with Sam. He's
at a finally made it to a busstation. And of course, I think
the lady he wanted to be leavingpretty soon. She's like, No,

(13:48):
it's not ready until there's notgonna be one where you're going
until five tomorrow. He's like, there's gotta be a wetter,
better way. And she says, yeah, there is buy a car, right? And I
was like, Man, she just calledyou a loser. She was not having
she was

Berly (14:04):
sassy. And lo and behold, he

LA (14:06):
turns around and who's there? Pretty Meg. Pretty blonde
hitchhiker Meg is sitting there.

Berly (14:13):
Fabulous boots for sure.
Yeah,

LA (14:15):
I liked her. And she, I mean that she's wearing that shortcut
haircut, yeah,

Berly (14:19):
that pixie cut, yeah, very cute.

LA (14:22):
So they decided they get to chatting and go to a cafe and
sit down and, oh, wait,

Berly (14:26):
they weren't they stayed in the bus station, weren't
they? Yeah. I mean, they hadfood and snacks. Yes, sorry,

LA (14:31):
sorry, sorry, I feel like they had beer. They did. They
did what serves beer? So, yeah, they're at the gas station at a
table they're having, they eachhave like, two beers in front of
them and like some Cheeto Puffsand stuff, and they're chatting,
bonding over their rebelliousYes. So she basically tells Sam
that she had what she had issueswith her family, and she just,

(14:52):
you know, that she decided shewanted to be independent and
live her own life, and theythought that, you know, she
needed to be careful, smart, butnot too smart. Scare off a
husband and all that kind ofthing. And so that's why she
took off on her own. And Sam'slike, I totally know what you
mean. And they're kindredspirits. And they cheers to
them, and oh, they're bondingwhatever. Dean is back, he goes

(15:16):
into the cafe, scotty's Cafe, and sees a couple in there, or
actually, you know, before hesaw the niece and saw that there
was a car being fixed, askedabout it, oh yeah. And she was
like, Oh yeah, it's a couple.
There were my uncle's fixing thebrake lines. And he's like,
Well, that's fucking weird, yeah. And the fact that it's a
couple, I think, is what alertedhim. So he finds them in the

(15:37):
cafe, starts chatting them up.
They end up telling him thatthey just stopped for gas, and
the local mechanic kind ofchecked their car out and
noticed that their brake linewas leaking and offers to fix it
for them, but says that, youknow, it won't be fixed till
sundown. Convenient. So Dean,

Berly (15:58):
Dean's effort here, effort, bless him.

LA (16:02):
He's just trying to be like, hey, so you know, I know how to
work on cars. I can fix thatbrake line for you just in like,
an hour. And ladies like, No, Imean, thanks, but we'd rather
have the mechanic fix it. Andhe's like, okay, okay,

Berly (16:16):
you might be in danger, though. Then

LA (16:17):
he's like, is that what he says at some point, he does,
yeah, he's, I mean, he's reallytrying, but he's not good with
people like Sam. Like Sam got a

Berly (16:26):
good comment about, if I just could, you know, Flash some
puppy dog eyes at you, you wouldhave listened like something
like, like Sam,

LA (16:32):
yeah, but he's just being like a creep, which is crazy,
because he's so fucking cute, sohot.

Berly (16:37):
Oh my God, he's so but he's still

LA (16:39):
just being a creep. Okay, guys, yeah, let me, let me help

Berly (16:43):
you. So awkward. But that sheriff was a little excessive.
Okay, yeah, so Scotty. Scotty'slike, leave my customers alone.
And then the sheriff comes in,yeah,

LA (16:54):
Sheriff comes in, like, leans over tables, like, come
on, you gotta go which Stan orDean has done nothing. So that
was my problem with it. I waslike, He's literally done
nothing. What are they gonnalike do?

Berly (17:05):
He was awkward. Come on.
Well, I

LA (17:07):
mean, that's you can't run somebody out of town for being

Berly (17:09):
awkward, right? Like, kick him out of the restaurant,
okay? But then we see him,

LA (17:13):
yeah? We see the cop running, literally following him
behind, and it shows the sign ofhim having to leave the area,
entire town, yeah. Then I mean,oh, that's when it pans to Sam
and Meg doing their littlebonding. Then it comes back to
Dean after nightfall, and sureenough, he's just driving right
back into town, and his carstarts to flashlights or

(17:35):
whatever, at that same spotwhere the couples did before,
and his EMF reader. EMF. EMFreader is going crazy in the
back seat, and he finally findsit. And I like the whole time
that he's used it on the show, Ihaven't seen it going that

Berly (17:50):
crazy. An EMF stands for electromagnetic field detector.
Yeah, I learned that from theghost hunters. Oh, yeah.

LA (17:58):
So he sees since the EMF reader is going off like crazy,
he pulls over and, of course,he's right there at the apple
orchard. And we see that thecouple from the cafe are in the
apple orchard already, kind ofhaving, already running and
already freaked out, alreadyscared scarecrows after him.
Dean jumps right in front of thecouple the first time we see the

(18:19):
scarecrows. So deeds is like, right there in front of him,
he's got that, that shortshotgun that I like, and start
shooting, like he tells thecouple run starts shooting at
Scarecrow, and it's doingfucking nothing to him, like,
normally, when he does it, evenif it's like this ghost or
spirits, they disappear, orwhatever, nothing's happened to
the Scarecrow. He's stillcoming. And they end up going to

(18:40):
the exit of the orchard, and theScarecrow disappears. I guess
he's just, he can't leave thatorchard.

Berly (18:47):
And earlier in the episode, Dean went to the
orchard to investigate himselfand saw the Scarecrow.

LA (18:55):
Oh, my God, I totally forgot about that part. Well, there's

Berly (18:57):
only one thing that happens in it that's important.
True, goes up on the ladder andlooks at the Scarecrow, and it
has the fucking tattoo, theskin, the skin and the tattoo
from the first couple that wesaw at the very beginning of the
episode. So confirmed. Shadyfucking scary scarecrow is shady
fucking and scary, for

LA (19:17):
sure. And Dean's like, nah, this shits not something.

Berly (19:20):
He called it fugly.

LA (19:21):
He was like, man,

Berly (19:22):
you're fugly.

LA (19:26):
I totally forgot that was like, That was why the tattoo
was relevant. Okay, so Sam orDean saved the day with a couple
tells them to high kick it outof town. Why do I keep saying
high kick it? I keep meaning tosay, yeah, get it. What is it?
Out of dodge? Get the hightailout of dodge or something.

Berly (19:43):
I say, get the fuck out of dodge. Hightail it. High kick
it. Get the

LA (19:46):
fuck out of anyway. That's what he tells the couple to do.
So then it cuts to we see Sam onthe phone, and Who's he talking
to?

Berly (19:55):
Big brother, but bro, Dane, we don't know who called
who, though, right? Yeah. Thatbothered me. It was funny
because the recap, the recap

LA (20:03):
says Dean checks in with Sam. But I'm like, Oh, how

Berly (20:05):
do you know that? Because we don't know. See that. We
didn't see who called him. Butbasically

LA (20:09):
Dean is catching Sam up, like, kind of, kind of running
things by him, just to see whathe thinks. And they conclude
that this scarecrow is amanifestation of a pagan god
that takes the couples, like, asa sacrifice, and, like the
locals, fatten them up withtheir food and apple pie. And
it's they're offering them upas, like, a fertility sacrifice,

(20:32):
yeah.

Berly (20:33):
And this scene was adorable, because they, like,
were apologizing to each other.
They were apologizing, but notapologies, right? And Sam, you
could tell Sam just smiling, which Jared petalleki has
dimples I've never noticedbefore. Oh my god, I love him
even more now. But they justwere so cute with each other in
this little phone call. That's

LA (20:52):
where Dean's telling him, like, how he's proud of him,
he's proud of him, that he stoodup to dad, and he's always known
what he wanted to do, and he'sdone it, and just like, if I
was, if I was saying, I'd belike, Oh,

Berly (21:06):
thank you. And also, he's like, you know, I don't have my
nerdy sidekick to help me withthe research, so I'm going to
this community college. I thinkthat's when Jared paddle like,
or I should use the name, yeah,Sam. That's when Sam smiles, and
I think that's when I yelled atyou. Does he have dimples? Oh so

(21:27):
cute. Um,

LA (21:29):
but yeah, it was a sweet moment. I really liked it, yes,
and yeah. So then dean does gomeet with a local professor who
Burleigh discovered is the

Berly (21:37):
cigarette man from X Files.

LA (21:40):
I tell you what, though he looks I feel like he almost
looked older in this than the XFiles. Well, X

Berly (21:44):
Files was in the 90s, so it makes sense that he looks
older. He's

LA (21:48):
thinking this show started way later than it did. I mean,
way earlier.

Berly (21:53):
A lot of it gives me 90s vibes, yet then they pull out
cell phones, and that's whatreminds me. It's not 90s. I
don't know why,

LA (22:00):
because when you were saying that, I was like, well, those
were the same time. These werefilms,

Berly (22:04):
but it's not, no, I did think he was gonna play a much
larger character as, yeah, theshow total cameo, yeah, it was
literally one or two scenes, andthat was it, maybe a minute
long, yeah, screen, yeah. I wassurprised that once I figured
out, yeah, that is the cigaretteman, that by the time I figured

(22:26):
it out and confirmed it withGoogle, he was no longer

LA (22:28):
a part of the opposite, yeah. And so he's a local
professor at the communitycollege, which, like, scene
wise, we were watching it. Ithink you pointed out, what
community college is this areally nice stained glass
windows, this banister on thisfabulous staircase, all woods,
real nice, yeah, not like ourCommunity College. No, maybe

(22:49):
because it's a small town, I

Berly (22:50):
don't know. Maybe, yeah, maybe it's the only college
within exactly 100 mile radius,or something. So they have to
make it suspicious,

LA (22:58):
not really, but another red It was weird. Anyway, this guy
provides Dean with books onScandinavian descent.
Particularly, he points out thisNorse god named veneer.
Basically, is he the one thattells him about the tree? I
think so. I thought it was theniece, maybe. Okay. Anyway,

Berly (23:18):
I didn't take as detailed the notes because I knew I
wasn't doing the recap. The bookis really

LA (23:23):
cool. It's like a huge book that he's showing them, and it's
got all these pictures, yeah, pictures, illustrations in it.
And one of them definitely lookslike a scarecrow. Dean even
mentions it, and the professor'slike, maybe even though clearly
fucking looks like, right? SoDean get has all the information
he needs, and so he knows thatthere must be, I think they

(23:45):
mentioned that there must besome sort of tree in the grove
that's connected to veneer, theScarecrow. And so Dean starts to
take off, and lo and behold, who's right out the side of the
door, the excessive, aggressiveShearer, yeah, but what with the
butt of his shotgun knocks himout.

Berly (24:03):
Yeah, yet again, unnecessary force. Yeah. I

LA (24:07):
don't like this. I

Berly (24:08):
don't like this. I don't like the sheriff.

LA (24:10):
Then we see the townsfolk, the couple that own the little
shop, Scotty and the sheriff, all under their umbrellas in the
rain, discussing what the fuckthey're gonna do to save this
town, because they don't havetheir sacrifice like they're in
on it. They're the ones doingthis stuff, and

Berly (24:28):
they're talking about who they're gonna do, and the
uncle's going, why does it haveto be her? And so LA and I
figured out, oh, they're gonnado the niece because she's an
orphan, yes, and she's livingthere with her aunt and uncle.
She's only been there for a fewyears, and all of this well, and

LA (24:45):
they don't have the couple so they've got Dean, yeah,
they've got their guns. Theywant Him the hell out of there.
And so what's what other choicethey have, unless somebody comes
to town, which doesn't happensvery often. So they're gonna
sacrifice

Berly (24:55):
their meats, and obviously none of them are gonna
step up to the plate to do it,because they. Haven't been for
at least three years, so we knowthat. And anybody who has seen
Hot Fuzz, it was very much likethe town in Hot Fuzz. I think
they even basically saidsomething along the lines of,
for the greater good, oh yeah, for the greater good.

LA (25:17):
Because, oh, and that's the most important part, is that
they know veneer is angry.
Veneer. Veneer is angry becauseit's the seventh day. This is
their last day to make thissacrifice. So veneer hasn't
gotten what he wanted. So, yeah, that's their last ditch efforts,
and that's when they, like yousaid, decide to do those two,
not do those two. Sacrificethose two. Yes, let's

Berly (25:41):
be clear.

LA (25:43):
So then we see we're back with Sam, and the bus is
arriving. He's been trying toget a hold of Dean, like he's on
the phone, calling him one afteranother, not getting a hold of
him. He knows something's up.
Meg comes over and is like, whatare you doing? He's like, he's
like, I gotta go. You know? Ihave. I've been trying to call
Dean for three hours. That's notlike him. She's like, Oh, maybe
someone died. And he's like, no,no, something's not right. And

(26:04):
she's just like, really nothaving it. But Sam's like, peace
out bitch, and takes off to gofind his brother. The Town
townsfolk, Tom's folk have putEmily, the niece and Dean in
this shed basement thing. It was

Berly (26:22):
like a tornado shelter, yeah, but I think that's because
we're like Texas, Oklahoma area.
We see something like that, andthat's what we think, yeah,
emergency shelter. But maybe itwas just storage or something,
because I think Didn't you sayit's Indiana or, yeah, yeah. So
I don't know if it would be, butit was like a storage thing. But
yes, it was. It was underground.
It definitely. The doors openedup like a tornado shot, and they

(26:45):
locked them in,

LA (26:45):
yeah. And so they're in there. And Dean's just, I think
he was suspicious that she wasin on it until this happened.
And so clearly he knows she'snot in on it. And he starts
asking her if there's, if sheknows of any kind of, like,
special tree in the orchard oraround town that's like,
different from the others. Andshe mentions that there is a
tree that they call the firsttree that the the people that

(27:10):
came over from Scandinaviabrought this tree with them and
planted it, and it's called, they call it the first tree. And
so Dean makes a correlation, that this is the tree that's,
you know, connected to theScarecrow he needs. This is the
one he needs to destroy. AndEmily tells him she knows it's
in the orchard, but she doesn'tknow exactly which one or where
it is. And then we see theselovely town folk dragging an

(27:35):
innocent person, yeah, draggingEmily, the niece and Dean, into
the orchard, tying them to thetrees, yes, and leaving them for
dead, basically. And Emily isjust like begging her aunt and
uncle horrible. Her uncle, veryvisibly, is like, not
comfortable with this. And Ithink that's when the aunt says,

(27:55):
it's like, you know, the thegreater for the many than the
one, or something like that, like you were saying

Berly (28:02):
first Sam came and saved them, yeah, tied them, yeah,
yeah, but, but, I

LA (28:06):
mean, the town's people there tied them up. They had
this little chitchat with theniece and just basically telling
her, you know, shut up and shutup and do it. He's like, your
sacrifices for the greater good.

Berly (28:17):
Yeah, you're the only one. Sorry. Yeah. It's like, is
she? Because I see a woman rightthere. Yeah, a couple tying her
up, literally the aunt and theuncle. You're literally a
couple.

LA (28:28):
So then, okay, so they, so they take off, and Sam and Emily
are tied up. They're just like, you know, Emily's upset trying
to get away. They hear somethingcoming. We, of course, think
it's a scarecrow, but

Berly (28:39):
who is it by the brothel?
It's Sammy. This little Sammy.

LA (28:44):
He unties them. They start taking off. And I think they
were gonna come back in themorning maybe, or,

Berly (28:51):
yeah, they were trying to get the hell out of there. Yeah.
Then the aunt and the uncle andthe sheriff and Scotty and all
of a sudden are there with gunsand flashlights, yes, yeah. And
they dramatically turned on eachflashlight one at a time. One
turned it on, and then anotherone and then another one. Was
like, they rehearsed that. Yeah, they've done this before. Yes,
they were like, We want to beultra dramatic. We got to go one

(29:13):
at a time. So that's what I was

LA (29:15):
going to say about the uncle. Because he seemed like, I
said he was visibly upset. Hewas like, even seemed angry with
the wife when they were tyingEmily up, like, what she was
saying, right? And then, nowthat they're late, they have
them surrounded. He's like,Emily, just take it. Like, just
do it. He's like, just like,What are you doing? I was like,
that's a big turn there, uncle.
But he gets what's coming tohim, because the guy's the

(29:36):
Scarecrow sickle goes rightthrough the chest and probably
see it pop out through hisheart, yes. And then I thought
this was so, I don't know why,my, I'm weird about ankles and
stuff, but because, like, youknow, when you're you're little,
and you think the monster'sunder the bed, yeah. And little,
there was some.

Berly (30:00):
Yeah, every once in a while

LA (30:03):
as an adult, like, I've seen some of those movies where they
like, slice the Achillestendons. You can't even walk. I
still check

Berly (30:10):
under I think I told I think I've said this recently,
actually, I still will lookunder my car sometimes, whenever
I'm walking to my car, oh, yeah, make sure nobody's over there.
You can't

LA (30:18):
be too careful. But yeah, so he stabbed the uncle through the
heart or whatever, and then hejust grabs the aunt by the
throat, and then he puts thesickle in the uncle's ankle and

Berly (30:32):
starts dragging him, yeah, because the uncle fell
after he did the sickle in thechest and pulled it out, the
uncle fell down. So the uncle'son the ground now, and he's got
the aunt and, yeah, he juststraight up went, like, just
hooked him, yeah, and startedcarrying. So

LA (30:47):
he got the couple that we thought should have gone snaps,
yes, got what you deserved. Andthen the lovely other townsfolk,
because they're all cowards andterrible people, just take it
off. They're not gonna helpthem. They're like, okay, good,
you got what do you want? Let'sgo. So then it's the next
morning, and we found, they findthe tree, it's got runes on it,

(31:09):
and that's, I mean, it lookscompletely different from all
the other trees, yeah, Richardand they're Sam and Dean are
putting fuel on it andeverything, and deeds about to
put the twig that's on fire init. And Emily's like, no, no,
let me do it. Because she'slike, let those fuckers burn. So

(31:31):
she lights the tree on firekills this pagan god. Job done.
Job well done. Yep, that's that.
And then they see Emily off on abus. Looks like she's heading to
Boston. Don't know what she'sgonna do, yeah? I never
explained that yeah for her, yeah. And as they're walking
back to the car, Dean's like, you know, where should I drop

(31:52):
you off? Like, where should Itake you? And Sam's like, Oh no,
yeah, I think you're stuck withme. Oh, and they have another
little moment where Sam's like, you know, you know, I know
Jessica and mom died, you know,it's been a while, or whatever.
And you know, I do want to findDad, but we're gonna do it
together. We're

Berly (32:17):
codependent together. So I

LA (32:20):
thought that was the end of the episode. It was not no,

Berly (32:24):
oh my god yes. We

LA (32:26):
see another creepy fan. This one's black, different, and it
had windows true. Meg's got athing for men in vans. Yes,
she's the one in the van withhim. And the guy is, you know
where you want to go, littlelady. And she tells him to go
ahead and pull over. And he'slike, okay, yes, okay,

Berly (32:45):
let's do it. And

LA (32:46):
she's like, I gotta make a call. So she pulls out this
cauldron, silver, it doesn'tlook right. And I'm like,
school's on it a call. And he'slike, I think he offers her his
cell phone. And she's like, she's and she reached, she goes,
it's not that kind Yeah. Shereaches the bowl and picks out
something that's like a knife inbetween her, like, middle finger

(33:08):
and whatever. She's like, it'snot that kind of call, slits his
throat, yeah, like, gathers theblood in her cauldron. I

Berly (33:14):
did not see this coming,

LA (33:17):
no. And so then she starts, she puts her finger in it and
circling around, doing some sortof incantation or whatever. And
she's like, Why? Why did you, like, Why did I, why did I have
to let Sam go? I could havetaken them both on. And then
she's like, it's like, she'slike, listening. And she's like,
okay. She's like, okay, yes, yes, father.

Berly (33:38):
And the blood was like,

LA (33:40):
oh yeah. It was boiling, yeah, something, it

Berly (33:42):
was circling, like something was going on in there,
but

LA (33:44):
yeah. And so that's how it ends, yeah. So what the fuck is
up? What

Berly (33:47):
is that? Who is Meg? Who was she talking to? That was the
most exciting part of this wholeepisode. I was like, Yes, I
loved it. I loved the ending. So

LA (34:00):
now you've got to tell us the lore. This lore is about
this

Berly (34:05):
well, for the gore, I mean, the face being ripped off,
and then Meg at the end, ohyeah, well, yeah, those are the
gory things. This wasn't a toogory episode. This one was kind
of like the last one, where it'sjust like more the creep factor,
and, yeah, Scarecrow and all ofthat. So for the lore, the

(34:26):
veneer is not an actual God.
It's actually a type of God. Oh,okay, not much is known about
Norse mythology or the mythologyof religious beliefs of the
peoples that predateChristianity in northern
Germanic Europe and Scandinavia, there are very few sources in
Old Norse and hang on, I Googledthis Futhark. Futhark, which is

(34:52):
the written language of theNorthern peoples from 800 to 14.
100 CE, which is now known asthe Viking Age.

LA (35:04):
Oh, interesting, because I always thought part of like, why
we don't have much about theVikings is because they didn't
have, they didn't write it down.
It's like, all by, well, I thinkthey wrote it down at a certain
point, but before that, it wasall word of mouth and stories
told about them.

Berly (35:19):
A lot of it was, yeah, but there are sources. It's just
so much of the North's mythologyis weathered, fragmented and
destroyed. So there's stuff outthere. It's just so fucked up
that that's fucking old. Yeah,it's really old. So we don't
know exactly what it says. Okay,is the problem, but there is

(35:40):
some poetry and memorials thathave been carved into stones
from the early Viking Age, andmost Old Norse sources come from
an early 13th century Icelandichistorian, poet and chieftain
who's named Snorri Sturluson.
Oh, that's

LA (36:00):
a good name. I'm

Berly (36:04):
gonna name my first child, Snorri. Snorri, s, N, O,
R, R. I like it so much of theacademics and historians
following the Viking Age thoughtthey knew about Norse mythology
that it often came from sourceswhich were written centuries
later by Christian writers, actually. So these writers had
the tendency to exaggerate andfill in gaps of knowledge. What?

(36:27):
Yeah, I know, right, and theentirely invented stories simply
intended to fascinate readerswith the magical and wild mythos
of Vikings and their Northmythology gods and goddesses,
regardless, Norse mythologyseems to be consistent kind of

(36:47):
string of stories, folklore anddescriptions of the gods and
explanations for the nature ofthe cosmos and the world in
which the Norse peoples lived.

LA (36:58):
I always find it fascinating when you like, look at each
religion. I took, like, a I tookone religion class in college.

Berly (37:04):
Oh, my God, you must be an expert. But,

LA (37:07):
like, when you look at different religions, like, Would
you really think about it? Imean, they're pretty similar. So
much of it's the same. It'slike, it's guys, we're all
talking the same thing, justdifferent storylines and things
like that, and then, like, someof, like, the multi God
whatever. But like, Catholicismcould be the same thing with the
saints and whatnot, but, um, butyeah, I always like it when they

(37:30):
tie it into, like, the cosmosand things like that. And I
don't know it's just, it'sinteresting,

Berly (37:35):
yes, but yeah. I mean, to your point, in most instances,
most being a good person ispretty, like, global, right?
It's pretty global standards forwhether or not you're a good
person or a shitty person.

LA (37:48):
And there's, like, a something higher than all of us
that we're preaching. We're notpreaching to, praying to and,
you know, asking for things orforgiving, asking for
forgiveness and whatnot.

Berly (37:59):
Anyway, what makes Norse mythology and its Gods occupied
the minds of the peoples who'sexplored, battled and settled
from Scandinavia to the edge ofthe Black Sea and in the other
direction, to Ireland, Scotland,Iceland, Greenland, and even
North America.

LA (38:18):
I want to go to all those places I know I want to go. I've

Berly (38:22):
done 23andme I've done, or not 23 me, I did what's the
other one? Ancestry? Oh, yeah,I'm a European mutt. Which was,
which is what I've always toldpeople, yeah, but I didn't know
exactly what that consisted of.
And now I know I am 28%Scottish, 24% English and
Northwestern Europe. 19% Swedenand Denmark. Hey, 12% Irish. 10%

(38:46):
Wales. Oh, your boy, Wales.
Michael Sheen, yeah. 10% Woo.

LA (39:00):
I need to do that because, like, my mom's side is Irish.
She was born in Ireland, andthen on the other side, my dad,
we always thought it was we'reNorwegian. The family actually
came from Norway. I think I'msixth generation from Norway,
but his ancestry said we weremore Dutch than Norwegian,

Berly (39:19):
so I don't know. Let's find out for sure. I

Unknown (39:22):
know. Okay.

Berly (39:24):
But anyway, back to North.

LA (39:26):
I'm sorry. Sorry. We gotta talk about ourselves.

Berly (39:29):
Sometimes it's really important our listeners are
dying to know, to know. So thegods of the North exist among
two pantheons, the aiser and theveneer. Oh, okay, yeah, so
veneer, it's not a god. It's oneof the two pantheons of God,

(39:50):
okay, but a later Pantheon whowarred with the ICR before the
pantheons merged into one. Oh,okay, but both pantheons of God.
Mainly come from two of at leastnine realms which we know that
from Thor? Yes, we know aboutthe Nine Realms, the nine

(40:10):
different realms from Thor andall that, and the rainbow brick,
yes. So specifically the veneer, are the gods responsible for
fertility, wealth, wisdom, foresight and commerce, or so
for somebody who's in the veneerto be associated with this town
doing well, it definitely makessense. Oh,

LA (40:32):
that was one thing I forgot to mention. When he was talking
with Emily, didn't he? He was,she was like, it's weird the
town, everyone around us,they're falling apart.
Everybody's having to leave, butwe're it's like, We're

Berly (40:42):
blessed, yes, yeah. And it wasn't just the orchard,
right, right? All theirbusinesses were miraculously
doing well, even though no oneever comes to your town, well,

LA (40:51):
she even says she was like, I mean, it's weird, because
we're kind of the boonies, butsomehow they're booming, right?

Berly (40:56):
It's not just so fertility, wealth, wisdom, the
Pantheon. Pantheon consists of11 gods, but I'm just going to
talk about two of the more wellknown ones who happen to sound
like they would be applicable tothis little, little Boondocks
town. Okay, not Boondocks town, this little boonies town. So

(41:21):
first we have Freya. She's thegoddess of love, beauty, sex,
fertility, gold, war and death,oh, oh,

LA (41:31):
there's a lot of positives and negatives.

Berly (41:34):
Okay, she got a mixed bag. So a story includes her
coming upon four dwarves and themost beautiful jewelry necklace
called brisingaman, Freya begsthe dwarves to allow her to
purchase the flaming necklaceand for the dwarves to name
their price. They instead askthat she spend a night with each

(41:59):
of them in exchange for thenecklace. Oh, my. She says, hell

LA (42:04):
yeah. Oh, she's game. Okay.

Berly (42:09):
Then there's another story that involves the necklace
being stolen by Loki. Oh, Freyaappears.

LA (42:16):
Freya was loki's mom in the comics, right?

Berly (42:19):
I don't know if it's the same one. I

LA (42:21):
don't either, but I know, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, Freya,

Berly (42:24):
yeah, yeah, Freya,

LA (42:27):
it's a comic.

Berly (42:29):
And also Loki, like, turns into a horse and gets
pregnant somehow. So, I mean, yeah, yeah, they took liberty.
They do stuff. So Freya normallyappears wearing a cloak of
Falcon feathers and withinstories, she rides a chariot
pulled by two cats.

LA (42:46):
Interesting, yeah, okay, little kitties, yeah.

Berly (42:50):
She's normally accompanied by a boar whose name
is hildes Vinny, okay. Freyaaccompanies her father to isare
after the war, and she lives ina home called folk Vander.

(43:11):
There, she plays an importantrole for the afterlife and fates
in the cosmos with Northmythology. So that's Freya. Now
we have Freyr. Oh, I make sureI'm saying that right?

LA (43:27):
Freire, Icelandic, Frere prayer.

Berly (43:29):
We're not going to try saying that again. Y'all are
just going to have to deal with

LA (43:35):
prayer. He just say Freyr.
He kind of prayer.

Berly (43:40):
He is freya's brother, because he's also the son of
Nord and Scotty, which areapparently, like the two, like
Zeus and whatever. Like, they'rethe two main ones. You know what
I mean? Like, you know how inGreek mythology, almost
everybody is a son or daughterof Zeus, yeah. Like, that's what
these kind of people are. And Heis the God of phallic fraterli,

(44:02):
phallic fertility, which Imeans, I guess that means nuts
like semen, yeah, virility, benevolence and prosperity. He
doesn't have as much going on asa sister. No, not, not quite as
much. And he was awarded therealm of the Elves, alfimir as a

(44:22):
teething present.

LA (44:25):
Oh, like when he's a baby,

Berly (44:26):
I guess Interesting.
Okay, I

LA (44:27):
don't think that helps him with his teething.

Berly (44:30):
No, probably not. And in a collection of anonymously
written Old Norse poems, Freyrrides a shining boar made by the
dwarves, and also has a magicship, which always has a
favorable breeze. Oh, and it canbe folded up and put into his

(44:51):
pocket. Stop it. Yeah. Supercool. Super convenient. I

LA (44:55):
mean, can I put my car in my pocket? No, no, damn

Berly (44:59):
it. Is it was there always a favorable breeze for
travel and all that. No man, hehad a good, super convenient
there's a story of himpossessing a magic sword, which
he must give up in order tofight a giant and win his wife.
He wins without the sword anddefeats the giant with an antler

(45:21):
instead.

LA (45:22):
What resourceful? He's very resourceful. Wow. Okay, and

Berly (45:26):
in Norse mythology that tells the end of the world of
gods and men, they call the EndTimes Ragnarok as we as we know,
and he Pharaoh, is fated to dieduring Ragnarok because he
doesn't have his magic sword, Iguess he never picked it back
up.

LA (45:43):
What about the antlers?

Berly (45:45):
They ain't magic, maybe not as resourceful as we
thought. So those are cutelittle snort. So that's, that's
what I pulled for the veneer.
Again, there's a total of 11 ofthem. So I wouldn't be able to
go through all of them, butthose were the two that based
off of, like them being, youknow, commerce and prosperity

(46:06):
and all that that I thoughtmaybe they had something to do
with that tree.

LA (46:13):
I have to say this, these last two episodes, the lore.
It's like, I'd like to dive alittle more into

Berly (46:18):
them. It could be fun.
Yeah, but yeah, the Scarecrowthing that doesn't really come
into Norse mythology,

LA (46:24):
well, they're basically considered pagan gods, yeah? So,
well,

Berly (46:29):
they're pagan gods. But, I mean, you know how in the
book, there was a book wherethere was a picture of a
scarecrow, yeah, that wasn't,that's not real, right? That was
just for supernatural lore.
Yeah, it's crazy. Because, like,I've

LA (46:41):
always, like, my whole life, I've identified as, like, half
Scandinavian, half Irish for myfamily, like we were saying. And
then I'm like, I don't knowanything about the Dutch. So my
life, I've just been interested, which I think that is part of
Scandinavia Dane, the Danes are,but I don't know much about
Danish culture. Me neither am Icompared to Sweden and Norway,

Berly (47:03):
yeah, so I don't know much about any of it, to be
honest. Oh,

LA (47:07):
you gotta look up your hands. Well, you're mostly
Scottish, right? Yeah.

Berly (47:12):
Hey. James McAvoy,

LA (47:14):
I need a history. Ramsey,

Berly (47:20):
well, to close out the episode, a quote that we both
got a nice little chuckle outof, yes, I hope your apple pie
is freaking worth it. Cheers.
Thank you for listening to denimwrapped nightmares.

LA (47:36):
Follow us on Twitter or Instagram, leave a review and
let us know how we can getinvolved in the fandom.

Berly (47:42):

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
