In this episode, I build an arched-top, custom built-in bookshelf for my Colorado Springs Client. The frame and shelves are made from walnut, while the back walls and sides are painted with reflective paint that reflects the LEDs integrated into the bookshelf’s frame.

Summary

Project Build: Arch Top Built-In Bookshelf with LED Lighting

This week, I tackled a beautiful arch-top built-in bookshelf for a client. The design features LEDlit shelves, requiring careful planning to hide the light strips while maintaining a clean, seamless look. Here’s how I approached the build:

Tracing the Arch & Creating the Template

  •  I started by visiting the client’s home with a poster board to trace the arch shape.
  •  To conceal the LED strips, the outer trim needed to overhang the drywall by about an inch.
  •  After measuring and marking, I used a compass to transfer the arch shape, adjusting for the trim thickness.
  •  A razor blade helped cut out the template, which I then transferred to plywood for a rigid pattern.

Cutting & Refining the Arch

  •  The miter angle was the most critical, so I cut that first before moving to the bandsaw.
  •  I left the line slightly proud to refine the shape through careful sanding.
  •  Since the arch is the focal point, I took extra time to ensure smooth curves, using chalk to highlight imperfections and sanding them away.

Constructing the Arch in Segments

  •  Rather than using one wide piece, I built the arch in segments, paying attention to grain direction for a seamless flow.
  •  After a test fit, I joined the pieces with dominoes and epoxy (stronger for longgrain joints).
  •  Soft pine glue blocks with CA glue helped secure tricky shapes during clamping, ensuring even pressure for a flat, straight result.

Final Shaping & Assembly

  •  Once dry, I removed the glue blocks and sanded off excess adhesive.
  •  Using a bandsaw, I refined the shape, then used a router with a pattern bit for clean edges (starting cautiously to avoid catches).
  •  The sides were milled to thickness, ripped to width, and cut with matching miters for the arch.

Installing the Shelves

  •  Each shelf was glued up from quarter material and cut to fit the alcove width.
  •  I added a dado on the sides to slide over wallmounted cleats for support.
  •  A fascia piece was glued to the underside to create an overhang, hiding the LED strips.

While I built the components, the client had their electrician run wiring for the lights, and their painter applied a metallic paint/plaster mix to the alcove walls, enhancing light reflection.   This project was all about precision—from the arch shaping to the hidden LED details. The final result? A stunning, functional bookshelf that blends seamlessly into the space!
