As the Finnish summer finally arrives, many Muslim women begin considering what to wear for gatherings, workdays, or simply strolling through the city. More and more are turning to the abaya – a traditional yet now modernized garment that’s becoming a familiar sight on the streets of Finland.

An abaya is a long, loose-fitting overgarment with full sleeves, traditionally black and plain. But today’s abayas have evolved, thanks to designers like Rimma Gar-Zaripova, founder of the Helsinki-based brand Garaza.

"When I first moved to Finland, I noticed that it was very difficult to find clothes that were both stylish and aligned with my values as a Muslim woman," Gar-Zaripova says. "That’s when I realized: abaya can be elegant, practical, and most importantly – empowering."

Garaza’s showroom in the Myllypuro neighborhood is modest in size but rich in intention. On the racks hang abayas made of linen and cupro fabric in a palette of sand, chocolate brown, slate gray, and classic black. Each design is tailored with the Nordic body in mind – especially for taller women who often struggle to find proper fits from international retailers.

An abaya is not just a garment – it’s a statement. It tells a story of identity, faith, and self-determination. In Finland, it also represents diversity, visibility, and the right to express oneself authentically.

Gar-Zaripova explains that Finnish clients particularly value comfort and breathability in their clothing. “The Finnish summer can be warm but unpredictable, so we chose light, natural materials that work both indoors and outside,” she says.

While modest fashion can still spark public debate, it is increasingly viewed with interest – and even admiration. “It’s important to understand that wearing an abaya is not about oppression,” says Gar-Zaripova. “It’s often a deeply personal and spiritual choice. Many of my customers say wearing an abaya gives them confidence and freedom.”

In recent years, Muslim women in Finland have become more visible as entrepreneurs, designers, and influencers who highlight the beauty and diversity of Islamic fashion. Garaza is among the pioneers – and a sign that abaya is here to stay.

Gar-Zaripova is already designing new models that integrate sustainability with Nordic fashion values. “My goal is for Garaza to be more than a clothing brand – I want it to be a platform that supports women, gives them visibility, and helps them build businesses on their own terms.”

Her next project is to launch an eco-conscious abaya collection using Finnish innovations in textile technology. “A Finnish abaya should not only be beautiful and comfortable – it should be sustainable, too.”
