The summer of 2025 has brought a renewed interest in Islamic garments in Finland, particularly khimars. For many Finnish Muslim women, wearing a khimar is not only a religious expression but also a way to combine comfort, modesty, and style in their everyday routines. Whether in Helsinki, Tampere, or Turku, women wearing flowing khimars are becoming a common sight—and often in surprisingly modern forms.

A khimar differs from a hijab in its coverage. It goes beyond covering the hair and neck—it also drapes over the shoulders and often down the upper torso. This makes it a favorite for women seeking maximum modesty without sacrificing ease. In Finland, the popularity of khimars has grown especially for outdoor activities, commuting, and daily errands. They are quick to put on and suitable for a range of weather conditions.

One key reason for the growing popularity of khimars in Finland is their simplicity. No pins, clips, or complex wrapping techniques are needed. According to Rimma Gar-Zaripova, founder of the Garaza brand, many of her clients prefer khimars precisely because of their ease of use. “When life is busy, you want to wear something that stays in place all day long. Khimars offer that freedom,” Gar-Zaripova explains.

Garaza has recently launched a new line of khimars specifically designed for Nordic climates. The garments use a breathable and flexible viscose blend, enhanced with bamboo fibers for better moisture management. “In Finland’s changing weather, the fabric really matters. We want our customers to feel comfortable even on colder or windy days,” she adds.

Aesthetically, khimars have also evolved. While traditionally only available in black or dark tones, today’s collections feature soft pastels, greys, olive greens, and even floral patterns. At Garaza’s showroom in Myllypuro, women can try on different khimars in front of mirrors and receive personal styling advice. “Many of our customers want their khimar to complement the rest of their outfit—whether that’s a blazer, a sweatshirt, or a summer dress,” explains one of the showroom’s assistants.

One particularly notable trend is the urban styling of khimars. This modest garment is becoming part of a wider fashion narrative, blending cultural identity with contemporary aesthetics. Young women—students and working professionals alike—are incorporating khimars into minimalist, elegant outfits. It’s a form of expression, not just of faith, but of personal style.

Gar-Zaripova emphasizes that comfort and authenticity must always come first. “Fashion is a tool, but identity is the foundation. Our job is to offer clothing that supports both.”

In an increasingly multicultural Finnish society, wearing a khimar symbolizes integration—not isolation. It shows that it’s possible to live a full life, go to work, study, ride public transport, and be active in society—while staying true to one’s faith. In Finland, khimars are not just garments—they represent a broader conversation about visibility, agency, and the right to dress in a way that aligns with one's beliefs.

As Garaza continues to grow, khimars remain one of their most beloved pieces—bridging tradition and modernity for Muslim women across Finland.
