Speaker 1 (00:00):
Three up, two across, Tap that play button three times,
and walk through the archway into Dialogue al. Hello, and

(00:22):
welcome to Dialogue Alli, the Official Potter Collector podcast about
Harry Potter books, book translations, and all other things magical.
I'm Eric, I'm Kylie, and the two of us are
Harry Potter book translation collectors. We collect Harry Potter books
from all over the world, and we also collect other

(00:43):
Harry Potter stuff too. We talked last episode about Advent
calendars with Peter. He was on to talk more about
the Advent Calendar opening series that he has on his
YouTube channel, and I guess this is news, but not really.
But we have the Harry Potter lego advot under at
my house, so we've been opening.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
That and has that been fun?

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, it's been fun. I mean we're only on day five.
Were recording this on December fifth. This is also season five,
episode four, so yeah, we're only five days into the
Advent Calendar. But I mean we've got some cool stuff already.
We've got a Harry Potter mini fig and some Hufflepuff stuff,

(01:24):
and we've got a Christmas tree today, I think, So yeah,
it's just it's fun going through that. So not only
do we collect books from around the world, but we
collect other Harry Potter stuff that appeals to us as well.
Very true, Very true. We have a good show lined
up for you today. We have a lot of news.
I feel like we've just had so much news lately,

(01:46):
which is, well, we've.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Got something, you know, we've got neat things in the works,
like just the Potter head or the Potter Verse in
general has neat things in the works. So there's gonna
there's gonna be news.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Yeah, that's a good point. And for a main segment,
we actually have like two full sets of books that
came out pretty recently, and we're just going to dive
a little bit deeper into those two full sets. One
is from Portugal and one is from Greece, and they're
just spectacular. So we're going to talk more about them

(02:19):
because we like talking about Harry Potter books from around
the world if we haven't mentioned that, and then we
are going to pick one of those delightful books as
our translation of the show. And we can't wait to
talk more about these. They're just they're so awesome. So
before we forget anything else, I say, we just crack

(02:41):
right on to the news.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
I love it. Let's get cracking. So the news, as

(03:09):
Eric said, we have some really you know, great things
going on in the Potter Verse just in general, right
with a lot of things right now coming out about
the TV show. We're going to start, you know, seeing
castings for that at some point, probably really soon. Right now,
there's whisperings that I don't know how to pronounce his name,
So I apologize, Papa, as he do. I apologize. I

(03:30):
don't know how to say.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
I'm not sure how to pronounce his name either. I
don't really know much about his work.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
He's I read about him a little bit. I was
really curious. I'm really excited. T HR is reporting that
he's been offered the role of Severus Snape, which the
huge shoes to fill Alan Rickman massive shoes to fill.
So whoever winds up becoming Severus Snape, I can't I
honestly can't wait to see how that goes. And I

(03:56):
can't wait to see the other castings so that you know,
we're going to start seeing more of that. Also, it's
been confirmed that they will begin production next summer, with
executive producers Mark Mylod and Francesca Gardner, and again they
keep talking about how we're going to go deeper into

(04:17):
the stories than the movies did. But that's not super hard.
The bar is pretty low there.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
But right, especially when you get to the later movies,
I know there's a lot that they gloss over. Yeah,
curly to bring back our rewatching the movies.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I was just thinking about that. One of my friends
at work has been rereading the books. She loves her
Harry Potter books, and she's telling me all about them,
and she, you know, we discussed the movies and I'm
just it made me think about how we're going to
have to do that. I think we're on to movie
five anyway.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
I think we are on movie five.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
What will be interesting to do is to like binge
watch once the show comes out, to binge watch like
the first are the first season right, and then discuss
that that'll be a lot. I'm really excited and all
the detail. I hope they get into the real like
in the Weeds and the minutia here. Also, the films

(05:15):
were originally filmed in Warner Brothers Studios and leaves In
and apparently that's where they're going back to. So that's
kind of cool, very first full circle moment.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
There it is, and there's I think, I mean, from
now until this show comes out, there's going to be
announcements I think almost every time a few weeks, and
there's going to be speculation. So I don't know. I
like being on the hype train, but also I get
tired of speculating things and then getting my hopes up

(05:44):
and then having it changed directions. So I'm just kind
of the mindset with this show that I'm going to
just take take the news as it comes and go, oh, okay,
that sounds cool.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
But you know, this is so much fun because it
reminds me so much of when the next books were
coming out. It's that same anticipation, similarly to like, you know,
when's it coming out? What are they gonna do? Who's
gonna be cast? Is this gonna you know? You know
what I mean, it's what's.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
The cover we're going to look like?

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Going back to the books.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
I absolutely get that. I'm just saying that, like casting announcements,
for me, I'm not it's not gonna make or break
me watching this show.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
No, I don't care.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
It's kind of like, oh, that person's gonna play that person. Okay,
like it's not it's not a deal breaker for me,
or conversely, it's not a Oh well, I wasn't gonna
watch it, but now I must watch it because so
and so is playing Susan Bones.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
I'm sorry, I'm already gonna watch it, but I'm excited
to see who they're gonna cast. And I'm not gonna
have any judgment because I'm they know, they have a
lot of big shoes to fill here, right, so I
couldn't imagine that kind of pressure. So they're they're gonna
do it great, exactly. I'm not worried about anybody that
they pick to put in these roles, especially as like

(06:59):
the Big Three, the True and Dumbledore, Snape McGonagall, that's
another one, geez, the Weasley's so many great loop and
you know, serious and I could just keep going. It'll
also be very interesting how they're gonna render Yeah, well,

(07:20):
it'll be really interesting to see how they're gonna render
Draco or how they're gonna render Dobby. Dobby's gonna get
a lot more airtime. We'll also hopefully meet Winki and
you know, and get to see so many more and Peeves,
we'll get to have a Peeves you know, that's really
fun and some of our favorite moments that involved Peeves
hopefully we'll get to see. I'm just I'm really excited.

(07:42):
I'm really excited.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
I am too.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
So yeah, that's that's kind of the TV show News
and that'll be on HBO on Max, I think is
what they call it now.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Also Max go On.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I think it is just Max. It used to be
HBO Max or whatever. But I don't know they want
us writing a first name basis.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
I guess writing two three letter words, I guess was
just too much. Just one three letter word is easier, apparently.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
I guess. So also kind of going into what you know,
the main segment, the Slovak books. They're the ones that
just released in like they have the they re release
the twentieth inn versary Slovox books with edging on different
colored edging, and you can actually buy a box set

(08:40):
of those now as well as individually. I'll make sure
to put the link in the stories too, but you
can buy them in a box set, so if you're
worried about and I think it's the same box set
as the twentieth anniversary, but I could be wrong. I
really haven't paid that much attention. But you can buy
those as a box set now instead of just individually.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
So yeah, and those remind me a lot of the
House edition books with the side edging that are colored
just just because the colors are. It's well, just just
because they're not all the same there, you know, like
there's a little bit of you know this and that
going on with the patterns that they chose, which, honestly,

(09:24):
I don't know how I feel about them taking the
slow box books and adding yet something else to it,
because I already thought that box set was absolutely perfect, perfect.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
And now they've gone made it perfect but perfect. I
haven't full disclosure, I haven't bought them or bought the
box set yet because I would buy all seven if
I'm going to buy them, simply because I already have
the twentieth anniversary box set, which I love, and it's
signed by the illustrator Adrian Macho. All the books are yeah,
and I really don't want to worry about having to

(09:55):
get this new box set signed by Adrian, and then
it's not the twentieth anniversary at that point, right, It's
it's not that. So I haven't bought it, yet I
can't justify it. It's not different enough, and I can't
and I refuse to sell my sinndbox set that my
signed twentieth aniversary box set so I can have this one.

(10:17):
It's just something I'm not willing to do.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
So I haven't been talking about this all the time.
There's a line in the sand you have to draw
when you're collecting at some point, or in the case
of some people that we know, there is no line.
But for me, there's still a line. Like I can't
get everything. I just don't have I'm learning I don't
have the space to put it all at the I

(10:41):
can't aside what to keep and what to what to sell.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Right, I can't justify buying that to keep. They're beautiful,
don't get me wrong. Like it's they're beautiful. I'm sure
that they would do great on the top scale. I'm
sure the smell could even be better. Who knows. But
I just can't justify that at this time. But I
will put the link to buy for those who would
like them in the in our stories. I'll also probably

(11:07):
put it on my website too, just you know. Another
resource excellent, oh and excitingly. Peter The Potter Collector got
to go to Mina Lima's shop in London and his
shop tour video of their shop in London is up,
so you can go watch it over on the Potter
Collector channel.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
Yeah. I haven't watched it yet myself, but looking forward
to watching that. Also looking forward to having him back
on the show to talk about it, because I know
from everything that he has talked about when you know,
when you meet Mina and Lima, and Melanie was with
him once at the New York Mina Lima Meet and
Greet event, Like, all I've heard is just how wonderful

(11:50):
they are to interact with. So yeah, I'm excited to hear,
you know, more about how this latest encounter with them went.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
Same, same, So I would like to talk about that
in depth with him as well. Yeah, but that's exciting.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
You mentioned did you mention that apparently the Scholastic stenciled
Edge OH box set is coming out September two, of
twenty twenty five, So the apology for.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
What they they should have put out for the twenty
fifth anniversary is coming out a year later.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Yeah, so we'll see, we'll see if that actually comes
out on that date. But Carly looked not too long ago,
and Thrift Books has a pre order for what did
you say, around seventy five US.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Dollars seventy five US, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
And I want it. That's not what the sticker price
was though, was it?

Speaker 2 (12:43):
It was like a hundred The sticker price is like
one hundred and fourteen ninety three. I wouldn't buy them
for that, but I would buy them for seventy five
because they they really and you do get the the
spine art right where the books altogether make a nice image,
and the book set looks to be really nice. It's
very clean, it's very different. It goes really well with

(13:05):
the spine art and the edging.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
So yeah, ye, Scholastic. Scholastic mix quality books and boxes,
so it's going to be good.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
Even if their decisions are slow and coming, yes exactly.
But yeah, that's out for or that'll be out to
buy September second, so a bit later than I would prefer,
but still it's coming. So that's all right.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
But in the meantime, we have other books that we
can talk about, because boy, as collectors of books from
around the world, there's always something new, and I feel.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Like there's a whole bunch coming out right now. It's
been a little expensive.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
Yes. So for the main segment for this episode, we
are going to talk about two new complete sets of
Harry Potter books from different countries. So the two that
we're going to discuss right now is the new Greek
edition box set. So it's the same text.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
It's not a box set.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
It's just you're right, it's not a box set. It's
just the same. Sorry, I'm confusing it with the other
books that we're talking about. Anyway, there's so many books,
I can't keep them all straight. The Greek books have
been reissued, but they actually have the artwork that was
out on the newest French books that were published, So

(14:50):
the ones that I got when I was in Paris
two summers ago, that art is no longer exclusive to
just the French books. You can also get it on
the Greek books, and Carlly got them.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
All I did.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
I just tell us tell us about like, why do
you opted to get the whole Greek set with that
art and not the French set.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Well, I have the whole French set as well, because
I didn't know that they're going to be putting you
know that they would be coming out in the Greek
I got the Greek books for several reasons. One, I
had my full Greek set that I had in my
collection was just of the original cover art with Thomas Taylor,
Cliff Cliff Right Giles and Jason Cockroft, and I have

(15:40):
a lot of those, so it's nice to have something
that isn't that. Also, differently from the French books, the publisher,
the Greek publisher edged, it's been quite I think, you know,
edging is really in around the world. They edged the
books in all different cover all different colors. Excuse me, Yeah,

(16:02):
So I mean it's really fine, and it adds just
a fun element to the original art. Also, it's bigger
than the French books. The Greek books are bigger than
the French books. And I really like the illustrator is
Stephen Fair or Stefan Fair excuse me, of the French books.
Wonderful artist illustrator and so on, and his illustrations are now,

(16:26):
like Eric said, available in the Greek books too, and
they just kind of made them their own in their
own little way by adding edging. It's the only Greek
Harry Potter books that I'm aware of that actually have
edging at this time. Also, they're made differently from the
other Greek books, and that the cover is not as thick.

(16:48):
It feels more like a book rather than that thick
flexi cover that they used to have with the flaps
and all that. It's just a book. But I just
had to have all seven. I was so excited. And
then I saw the edging and I bottle seven as
well as a Greek Tales of Beatled Bard.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
I'm surprised at how in edge colored edges are right now.
Like that is so it's.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Everything plastic and Slovakia and Greece and.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
The anniversary book from Spain with the silver oh yeah right,
Like there's just so much we had. We had really
none for the longest time, and then the House editions
came out and we're like, yeah, this is cool, but
that is like a dry spell where there was nothing
hm hmm, and we just, you know, we're clamoring for

(17:40):
the American anniversary books to have that, I know, colorful
side edging, and then you know, we've beaten this topic
to death. But eventually the they're coming out now with
the the full one through seven set of this plastic
paperback books. With the you know, colored stencil pattern on
this on the side.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
If it only took a while. But the.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
Fact that you know, these Greek books are doing exactly
what you said, like they they're borrowing the art that
was on the newest French books. But they didn't just
put the art there. They did something else. And I
think when we always talk about in the translation of
the show segment, when we're talking about cover art or
interpretation of cover art. Now a side edging is not

(18:26):
the cover, however, that does it distinguished the book? It does.
It distinguishes it enough from the original, which makes it
just that much more exciting, or it gives you more
of a reason to purchase that book. Like like you mentioned,
we have so many books on our shelves with the
US cover art, and it's just the US cover art.

(18:49):
It looks exactly the same. It's just in a different language.
It's not a different color foil. It's not you know,
the jacket or the spine isn't any different. It's just
the exact cut and paste US art and also the
UK art. I have a ton of Thomas Taylor books,
so do you they look exactly the same. It's just
a different language on the cover. And that's fine, But

(19:12):
when we talk about, you know, reasons to get these
different Harry Potter books from around the world, which I
think you know, most people were initially drawn to or
still are mainly drawn to collecting translations for the sole
reason that these books look different and exciting than other ones.

(19:33):
You're not getting them just so you can have a
billion copies of the Thomas Taylor no cover art, which
we have, but those aren't the ones that necessarily excite us.
It's the ones like you know, this new French art
that's now on the French book and it's on the
Greek book. There's a reason to get both. You don't
have to, you can get the same art, but if

(19:55):
you get both, you can easily distinguish the two of them, and.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
They're very different. And the Greek this is the Harry
Potter is raised on the front cover, but like on
the book six, we have this wonderful like purple and
yellow and orange color palette going on as well as
other colors. But and then the side edge is this
nice purple color that matches the purple on the front

(20:21):
cover very well. So it just brings out the book.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
It just as it further, what are the spines like
on that one? Okay, because because the French books all
have a very distinguishable spine with the folio, and I.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
Like, how is different colors? It's not they're all different,
They're all easily distinguishable, but each of the colors of
the side edge matches a main color that's in the
book art on that particular cover. So it's it just
enhances it. I I had to have them the Greek
books anyway, like, once they're not for sale by the publisher,

(21:02):
they just get harder to get anyway. So I just
went ahead and jumped on it.

Speaker 1 (21:06):
So, speaking of that, Carly, where can you buy one
or all of these new Greek books if you're interested
the publisher.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
I do have a spare book one that I've got
up for sale, but you can buy them from the publisher.
The shipping is, you know, international shipping for seven books
is international shipping for seven books. But it was very quick.
They were packed. Well, I got all seven. I didn't
have a problem.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
Awesome, So that if you want to pick up these
Greek books one or all or randomly book six whatever
you collect. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
Also good to know at the publisher they had the
katsu Kabuishi books still for sale. I believe all seven
of those were still for sale at the publisher two,
so you could get the katsu Kabuishi Greek books there
if you want those, So just a little bit more
to be aware of. They also had a Greek Tales

(22:06):
for people to bard, which I figured, since I was
already buying seven books, I could throw in an eighth.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
Why not. The ship's not going to increase.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
That much exactly, and it's I may as well. It
was just so easy.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
Absolutely well, speaking of shipping from a country in Europe,
we have another box set or not box set, but
full set of books that just came out in Portugal,
and my goodness is it calculate. And I didn't think
I would like these as much as I do.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
I didn't, of course I did.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Yeah, of course you did. I about book one. We
had a group order in our discord, so if you
support us on Patreon monthly, you get access to our discord.
And this is just a perfect example of ways that
we can collect with each other and save a little
money doing so. So you know, someone buys all of
the books and has them shipped to his or her

(23:10):
house in the United States and or Canada, and then
from there the books get mailed individually to the rest
of US, and we pay said to person for the
cost and split the shipping cost from Europe. So it
actually ends up saving us all quite a bit of
money because it's just it can one big package from

(23:31):
Europe instead of you know, eight or nine still big,
but smaller packages from Europe.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
Yeah, and it just makes things so much easier. I
was on the fence at first about getting all seven
of these because I the pictures of this art do
not do it justice. They just don't.

Speaker 1 (23:50):
They don't, right, I agree with you on that, And like.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
What we've started to see so much with these books.
The spines when they're all put together one through seven
make a really fun image of Harry playing quidditch, which
is a new spine image. We don't have that spine art.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Well, I think the Taiwanese the there's I forget the
spine art for that. But I want to say it's
Harry and Quidditch. I could be wrong. I want I forget.

Speaker 1 (24:17):
Now that is it's it's right behind me perfect.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
What is it?

Speaker 1 (24:21):
Yeah, well, it's Harry on a broom is the first
like three and a half books, and then it's just
him flying over Hogwarts, so it's not.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Necessarily so he's not playing quidditch.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
This is definitely This is definitely quidditch. And yet again,
because I only bought book one, and I have only
book one for quite a few of the sets. With
the spine image, it's like just like a couple of
people cheering and quidditch stands like, yep, it doesn't look
like much. But what I do like though, is if

(24:49):
you didn't know it was a full image, it still
looks like a spine.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
It's not like you're not missing out divided it gets
some weird art you know, where it's like, oh, well,
this could be a picture, but it will never be one.
Instead it looks like a nice spine.

Speaker 1 (25:06):
Yeah, so we should mention that this is once again
the European Portuguese. Portuguese books are different in Portugal and Brazil,
but this.

Speaker 2 (25:16):
Is specifically illustrators, yeah.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
And different text blocks. So this is this cover and
this set is unique to Portugal at the moment, and
it's published by Editorial Presentsa and the art is all unique,
like we just mentioned by Mario Belem and you can
also buy this directly from the publisher again, so it's

(25:39):
not not difficult to find. But I think what I
want to go into talking to you about, Carly, is
like what do these remind you of? And then you know,
what do they do that nothing else does?

Speaker 2 (25:49):
Oh geez, there's so many places I could go. And
we talked a little bit about this before we were recording,
about how the elements in each of the books, Like
there's a common theme with each of the books, right,
they're built kind of around a suitcase and stuff like that,
different images and stuff. But it reminds me so much
of the like the New Estonians, which we talked about.

(26:11):
But when I look at them, I think about the
twentieth Anniversary German books because there's so many fun elements
that the illustrator brought in and it's not chaotic, it's busy,
it's not chaotic everything and every book. While there's different
pictures and elements and different things from each of the

(26:35):
books brought in, they have the same I guess theme throughout,
so you can see book one and know how the
rest of the books are going to be laid out
image wise.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
Yeah, So I only have book one, but all the
books come with this just wonderful bookmark that shows all
the covers on it, which is just so cool. But
all of the books have kind of the same placement
of the main things, right, Like it looks like there's
a bunch of books or luggage stacked together. But when

(27:07):
you see all the covers together, you notice that, like
the JK. Rowling book is, you know, in the same
upper left hand corner part, the Harry Potter font and
title is in the same spot. There's always a pair
of Harry's glasses on a book or whatever, trunk or
ticket whatever underneath that. But then after that, more or

(27:29):
less the size of all the parts are the same.
They're just moved around slightly, but they just feature different
images from each story and that's so cool. And additionally,
there's kind of a color palette theme. I would say
it's more of like a temperature theme, like the warm
colors or cool colors. But it also it definitely goes

(27:53):
in rainbow order, like the first one is kind of
a reddish theme, followed by an orange theme, yellow, green, blue, purple,
and then there's like a pinkish at the end. So
it's just it's so cool, how busy they see yet
when you see them all together, they go so well together.
And that's that's what I honestly think about when you

(28:14):
compared it to the Estonian set, where those books are
all very simple, but they're very colorful and all together
you can just tell they go together. But they all
look different enough that each of them by themselves are cool,
much like the the German set that you're talking about,
where they're all just you know.

Speaker 2 (28:35):
Busy, but not too busy.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
Yeah, yeah, that's a good point. In the backs of
all these books, it's the same type of design that
looks you know, like different stamps or it's the same,
you know, like books are just kind of a class thing,
but it's the same the same images on the back.
So yeah, they're just they're so fun and they're not
They're not like overly childish, you know, like you think

(29:00):
by being so colorful they would be overly I don't know,
not I guess childish isn't the best word, but I
guess they're they're targeted at a younger audience's but they're not.
They they still seem like anyone could read it.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
And I do love that they included the twenty fifth
anniversary sticker on the books.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
Yeah, and not only that, but the sticker says twenty
five years of Harry Potter in Portugal.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
In Portugal, which how cool is that?

Speaker 1 (29:32):
That's so cool? It really they don't have you didn't
have to add that on there, but they did. No,
everyone's just say twenty five years of Harry Potter, like right.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
This is in Portugal. And one of the things too,
that I'm also reminded of is this loosely reminds me
of kind of like a Rubik's cube, right, how the
images are kind of fitted together. It kind of reminds
me of like a puzzle or Rubik's cube something like that,
And they're just kind of slotted into place, but really
well done. It's not too much for.

Speaker 1 (30:02):
Me, it's not and honestly it well exactly like when
I saw the pictures of these beforehand, it looked like
they could be too busy. But I do kind of
also get a mina lema vibe from the yes, just
in a way that the pictures that are on the front,

(30:23):
they're not all the same art style. So like there's
a picture of the trio in the chess room during
the you know, the final chapters of the book, and
then there's like this, you know, kind of potion flask
with a key, but then there's Harry's glasses. Then there's
kind of like a comic bookie looking diagonalely and a

(30:46):
comic bookie kind of sorting hat. But then there's like
a I don't know, almost like an ancient advertisement for
Olivander's wand shop on there. And it's just it's just
so cool. And I feel like we're talking so much
of about this now that we need to like move
into the transition translation of the show. I know, I
still think this applies to all the books without us

(31:08):
giving anything a score, but yeah, there's just so many
fun details on these.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
I know, the more I look at them, the more
I find new stuff there, and I I just really
like them. Or like you know, when you look at
book one, the Hogwarts Express smokestack goes up through the glasses.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
I know, it's so cool. I didn't think I wanted
all seven of these, but I might want to acquire more,
but I'm in no hurry because and they're not going to.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
Go anywhere, which is nice, but no Book three, like
you just have to appreciate Book three and what right.

Speaker 1 (31:45):
Well, typically Book three we're used to that being more
of like a purple.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
And the purple is still there, but it's.

Speaker 1 (31:52):
Still there, but it's not the main accent of Yeah,
it's just so cool.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
It's they really put a lot of thought in effort
into it. Or like when you look at the goblet,
this is one of my favorite. Everything goes so well together,
so well together, you know. And again the spine, it's
just a great standalone spine like they all are, but
together makes a great image. I could go on and

(32:18):
on and on about these, but we could also do
it with the tots.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
I think we should move on to the tots. So
once again, you can buy both the Greek, the new
Greek set with the newest French art and the newest
European Portuguese so from Portugal Portuguese Harry Potter Book's full
set from their individual publishers.

Speaker 2 (32:41):
And I'll try to remember to put the links on
my website and they'll also be available in the stories
on our Instagram, you know, just more resources for everybody
to be able to get them as easily as possible.

Speaker 1 (32:54):
Yep, exactly, And we'll definitely post pictures of these two
because they are just fans and.

Speaker 2 (32:59):
They quickly importantly for holidays, like it will be like
if you're trying to get them for Christmas presents, you'll
have to order them sooner than later. But mine came
really quickly, so that's something to be aware of.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
Awesome, Well, anyone else is coming up quickly. The translation
of the show segment.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
Such a good segment. So we've already talked quite a

(33:55):
bit about the books, but we're going to keep the
trend going. The translation of our show is the philosopher's
stone of the new European Portuguese books, because we both
have it.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
We both have it, and it's it's fun to talk
about brand new translations that were like kind of going
through for the first time. I love it.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
I know, I know. I've had so much fun reshelving these.
Actually this was a treat to put on my shelf.
So anyway, the illustrator, I think, yeah, we said who
the illustrator is, but we'll say it again, Mario Blam
and you can follow him on Instagram. Very easy to
find on Instagram. I follow him over there. The translator

(34:35):
is Isa bel Fraga. There are several different translators that
were involved in books one through seven, but I believe
this one. Yeah, it's just Isabel Fraga and the publisher
is Editorial Presensa. Some general information on the language. Portuguese
is a Romance language with Celtic, Germanic, Greek, and Arabic influences.

(34:56):
European Portuguese was spoken in the Iberian Peninsula before, and
it was kind of known as like Galician Portuguese. The
two are actually very linguistically similar. With the formation of
Portugal as a country in the twelfth century, the language
evolved into what we know as European Portuguese today. There
are approximately ten million speakers there and it's native to Portugal.

(35:19):
Like we've said, and really quickly, we're just talking about
European Portuguese, not Brazilian Portuguese or Portuguese as a language
in whole. Like that gets really big, really fast.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Topic wise, Yes, there's there are a lot of people
that speak Portuguese in general, but not as many in
agg as there are in Brazil.

Speaker 2 (35:42):
And it's a pretty big global language. There's a lot
of speakers around the world of it. We're just kind
of isolating Portugal since these books were published there, you know,
rarity in value, not rare. Their value is of a
new book. And they're beautiful. Great stocking stuffers by the way, yeah.

Speaker 1 (36:03):
For book shaped stockings, especially who doesn't want.

Speaker 2 (36:06):
A book shaped stocking? If I walked in and saw
book shaped stocking hanging on my mandle, I'd probably cry.
But you know, price of a new book plus shipping
if you have to have it shipped outside of Portugal,
So not rare or not valuable, just really fun. I

(36:30):
want to say they mine. They have been on sale
over at the publisher for a few euros off, not
much like five or ten percent off, but discount off
is still discount off.

Speaker 1 (36:43):
I would guess they're available on one of the European
Amazon sites.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
Also, yeah, I haven't looked, because.

Speaker 1 (36:50):
I haven't looked either, but I would imagine you could
find that.

Speaker 2 (36:53):
But I would think so they're not hard to find,
is the point. Let's give it the old smell test.
I actually smelled mine, yet, how exciting I have neither.

Speaker 1 (37:02):
This is the inaugural smell.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
Ooh, I'm sad Melanie's not here to smell it with us.

Speaker 1 (37:10):
I know.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
Oh I really do like that though, do you?

Speaker 1 (37:15):
Because I only think it's okay.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
I don't know if I like it because I'm so
excited about the book or if I actually like it
to be fair, but I actually think I do like it.
I smelled right in the middle.

Speaker 1 (37:28):
Yeah, me too.

Speaker 2 (37:30):
And to me, it has the wonderful aroma that's very
pungent and strong. But it reminds me of like when
I walked into like the leather the shoe store or
one of those stores where it's just overpoweringly great and
I could smell it for a while and probably get
a headache from it, but it would be a well
earned headache. Yeah, I have to It's not slow walk outstanding,

(37:55):
but it's like outstanding minus.

Speaker 1 (37:57):
To me really, because I was gonna give it like
an exceeds expectations minus or acceptable plus. I like it.
It's it's a good smell. It's just there's not enough
to the smell to really.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
Oh minus strong and maybe maybe it's just yours versus mind,
but it's a good smell.

Speaker 1 (38:17):
I like it, so yeah, I'm happy with it for sure.

Speaker 2 (38:21):
It's not as strong in my Chamber of Secrets, though
the smell is definitely stronger in my Book One than
my book two, So whatever that means. But anyway, I'm
going to say out it's like outstanding minus exceeds expectations
plus Somewhere in there is where my score lies.

Speaker 1 (38:40):
That's fair.

Speaker 2 (38:41):
Yeah. Size and proportions, I like it a lot.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
We should mention this is it's a soft cover book,
but it's got that kind of like faux hardcover. Yeah,
flexi cover with the it's got the flaps that flap
out like a dust check what's used.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
To do before these new ones came out?

Speaker 1 (39:03):
Yeah, exactly. So this book is a little stiffer than
just a regular paperback. However it is still I would
consider it a paperback. If you had to just say
is it paperback or hardcover, I would say it's paperback.
So size and proportions, I'm comparing it to other paperbacks
in this regard, and I really like it. I'm giving
it an exceeds expectations for book one. It's tall, it's

(39:25):
it's wide enough. It just is a good size for
a book, especially a paperback book. So I really like
it exceeds expectations for me.

Speaker 2 (39:34):
For me, it's just going to get an acceptable I
would prefer it to be bigger, like longer, and taller
because I would like to see more of the illustrations
spread out personally.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
That's true. I still think it's a good size though
for the illustrations I can't I can see, but I
mean to be taller and wider in the you know
when when it gets to the thicker books four five.

Speaker 2 (40:01):
Six, if it were to be a bigger size, it
would be harder to you know, manage while reading it,
or like how the book feels in your hand would
be skewed.

Speaker 1 (40:14):
Yeah, wet's just go right into that. So how does
it feel?

Speaker 2 (40:16):
Because to me, I would say it succeeds expectations. For me,
it's great.

Speaker 1 (40:21):
Oh see, I was even borderline outstanding because I think
the texture on the cover.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
I feel this like this change is just.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
The little box where the Harry Potter and the title
of the book part is is like extra smooth and shiny.
The rest of it's smooth, but it's a little more
matt it is, you know that.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
Yeah, this is outstanding on my end.

Speaker 1 (40:45):
But I like I like just how when you open
it up, your it opens and your fingers that are
feeling the the cover parts, like it's just such such
a joy. So yeah, I'm giving it an outstanding. I
think it feels is really great and and you know
it's oh, I'll finish my thought. And I mean, it

(41:07):
is a softcover book, so the spine isn't going to
be like, you know, super just flop open without it cracking.
But this book does open pretty wide the spine cracking.
And it could just be because it's book one. You know,
when you get to the bigger things, probably that will change.

(41:27):
But man, I really just like how this feels in
my hands. I'm still I'm going with outstanding.

Speaker 2 (41:31):
I'm going to say outstanding, and I'm going to say
it feels like a book that I could read without
without cracking the spine. Like I love that. Also, they
put in the creases along the spine to absorb the
cover bending at the spine break, so you're not going
to just sit there and flop it open, which I
think is easier on the binding as a whole. So

(41:52):
they put some thought and effort into this.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
I think that's more quality, which is just our next
one here.

Speaker 2 (42:00):
It does.

Speaker 1 (42:01):
Yeah, I was going to say that for quality with
the spine creases on there, like that's.

Speaker 2 (42:06):
A quality of life standing.

Speaker 1 (42:07):
Yeah, I am for quality. I'm saying outstanding. That's a
quality of life improvement that they don't have to do.
But putting that crease in there, does, you know, increase
the longevity of this book and how many times it
can be read as a paperback And you know, obviously
it's a paperback, it's not going to be the same
quality as a hardcover book like the Slovak hardcovers, but

(42:31):
in terms of a paperback it's outstanding. It's just really
it feels it just feels like a quality item. If
you bought this, it feels like you got your money's worth.

Speaker 2 (42:43):
Absolutely, I would definitely agree with that. Like there there
was a little bit of sticker shock when I was
first looking, because you're looking at about with conversion from
euro into dollars US dollars, you're looking at about one
hundred and fifty well one hundred and thirty two is
for the set, I think, maybe a little bit more,

(43:06):
but it's worth it. The books are made very well, right, So,
like I'm used to a lot of new European books,
you know, being around fourteen ten to fourteen euros, and
this one was definitely more than that, not much more,
but more closer to twenty euros than ten, but I

(43:28):
think it's worth it. Like quality is definitely there. It's
it's meant to be read several times over. They've taken
good care, it looks like with creating the spine. The
paper quality is really nice. It has the little flappies.
It's just a well made book. It's outstanding on my end.

Speaker 1 (43:50):
Well, I think too, though for that price. It's it's
just the prices of things that have increased, right we
talked on our thanksgiving up.

Speaker 2 (43:57):
Well, licenses too have.

Speaker 1 (43:59):
Have to be Like my original Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone
soft cover from Scholastick was five ninety nine. Then there's
the ones with the solid color color spine paperback that's
sticker price ten ninety nine. And now these ones that
just came out with the stenciled edge you know are

(44:19):
or the one before the stencils, I'm sorry, was twelve
ninety nine. The stenciled edge one is fourteen ninety nine.
Stone about fifteen dollars for the you know, current paperback
Sorcerer's Stone in the United States. Twenty euros for this
book that is unique art and in my opinion, made
better than the Scholastic paperback because.

Speaker 2 (44:40):
It's by a lot.

Speaker 1 (44:42):
It's it's not like the Scholastic paperbacks are the paperback
version of the hardcover. This is like this is the
only version, so right, it's it's just a great job
they did, so I think the price is justified.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Like I agree. I had to get the book in
though to feel like the price was justified. If that
makes sense.

Speaker 1 (45:05):
Oh yeah, I agree with that.

Speaker 2 (45:08):
And then we have, you know, interpretation of cover art.
I One of the things I really like about it
is all seven books have these great moments and these
great scenes, like, but they don't give away the book.
They don't spoil anything, right, And it's not like the

(45:31):
Ukrainian books where it's like, oh, these things are in
here and we're gonna put them all.

Speaker 1 (45:35):
I'm gonna say that, just gonna say that. Oh by
the way, uh, Voldemort, it's on Correl's turbine, on his
head under the turbine, and we're just gonna put it
on the cover.

Speaker 2 (45:44):
You're gonna put him in there? Yeah, you actually like
there's not spoilers here. There's interesting things going on, Like
you know, there's a chess game that's by looking at
the cover, you know, there's a terrain, you know, there's
something that looks like a three headed something or other.
I also really like how the illustrator put JK. Rowling's

(46:05):
name on the spine of a book like you would
see on a regular book. I thought that was well done. Yeah,
we have the letter, you know, our Hogwarts letter here
we you know, sorting hat in the houses, but you
don't know what it means necessarily unless you've read the
books and then they make.

Speaker 1 (46:22):
We have you know, the nine and three quarters train
ticket exactly there, but you don't know what that means.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
No Olive anders wand Shop, which I love that that's included.
So it's one of those that there's no moments that
are just super spoilery, just really fun elements pulled from
the story.

Speaker 1 (46:40):
And this is not my X factor, but this is
my favorite part of my I'm giving it an O
outstanding cover art is the Petrificus totalists Like yes, spell
on the cover, which it just seems like a bunch
of nonsense, but like as we know that we read it, like,
there is a pretty pivotal scene in that book where

(47:04):
you know, Hermione uses it on Neville so that they
can sneak out of the portrait hole to go try
to stop what they think is Snape from stealing the stone.
So yeah, like again what you just said. There's no
spoilers on the front, but after you've read it, you
can go back to the front and identify everything on there,

(47:24):
which is so cool.

Speaker 2 (47:26):
It's fun to see how a new artist has rendered
things that we've all come to love and really enjoy.
What is your ex factor? I'm going to give outstanding
for cover. I think I skipped my O.

Speaker 1 (47:42):
I'm going to honestly, there is enough about this book
that could be an X factor. But the fact that
it came with a bookmark on the inside with all
of the books, like all the covers, that's super cool.
And it's not even like, you know, it's just a
bookmark with Harry Potter the books and then the little
publisher name in the corner. It doesn't feel like it's

(48:04):
like a promotional thing for you know, something else, or
a partnership with you know, another store or bookseller. It's
just like, hey, here are all the books that we
published right now. If you want to buy them, you can,
but here's a bookmark to enjoy reading your Harry Potter
book with this Harry Potter book mark. That is that's

(48:24):
just so cool. I guess my my honorable mention X
factor is that we talked about the twenty five years
of Harry Potter stickers in Portugal, which makes it exclusive
to these books, which is cool. How about you? What's
your EX factor? Carly?

Speaker 2 (48:42):
There are so many great things to point out and mention.
I honestly, it's hard for me to come up with
one because there are so many. I think for me,
oh geez, must I do this? I like how they
went a little extra mile. Actually on the inside flappy

(49:06):
it says when guardium leviosa.

Speaker 1 (49:08):
On the inside, oh, that is so cool.

Speaker 2 (49:11):
And on the back it says locomotive mortis that.

Speaker 1 (49:15):
Is so cool. Why who knows? But it's awesome.

Speaker 2 (49:18):
It's different spells in all the seven books.

Speaker 1 (49:21):
That is so cool.

Speaker 2 (49:23):
I'm so excited. So yeah, that's definitely my X factor.

Speaker 1 (49:29):
That is really cool. I think my X factor that
I don't like, like the one thing about this book
that I don't like, and you might read the F factor.
We should start incorporating the F factory.

Speaker 2 (49:45):
That's not a bad idea because we already do that. Anyway,
we can just have a segment.

Speaker 1 (49:49):
The end papers that just have the like very standard
HP logo.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
Don't love that.

Speaker 1 (49:59):
I don't love that because I don't think it's unique
enough to this book. Like it looks like those that
HP could be in any Harry Potter book and it
would fit just fine.

Speaker 2 (50:12):
But if it were anything any busier, I think it
could take away from the wonderfulness of the art.

Speaker 1 (50:19):
Yeah, I guess I just don't. I don't think it's
necessary that they have.

Speaker 2 (50:24):
That, or I wish it was a little necessary.

Speaker 1 (50:26):
I wish it was a little more random, But I
don't know. Whatever that maybe maybe that's more of my like.

Speaker 2 (50:31):
See, so when you flip through, flip through past the
title of contents, there is a gray HP, which I
actually do really like, and then on the backside you
get a map of the school ground and so I
think in the Johnny Duddle books too. But so it's not.

Speaker 1 (50:52):
I would have read that gray page just been the
end papers, honestly, but I like the harp. I guess
I would have preferred if they were going to just
pick something standard, I would have preferred the map. But
that's just me. It's still great. It's the only one
with this end paper, so.

Speaker 2 (51:12):
I don't. I'm trying to think if there's something about
the book that I just that sticks out to me
as I wish it were different. I think for me,
I would have. I wish that they had internal illustrations
at the chapter headings.

Speaker 1 (51:29):
Well don't we always?

Speaker 2 (51:30):
But and I understand that would have up the cost,
you know, because it's more ink, more time, you know,
potentially another illustrator if they're not going to use the
grand pre internal illustrations. I get all that, so I
understand why they didn't. I'm also really glad they did
not edge these, even though it's the new hot thing,
because the covers are so busy, it would have been

(51:53):
too much.

Speaker 1 (51:54):
The only way they could have done it is if
all of the books had one color on the edge,
and that color was like a neutral, like a gray
or a shade of black.

Speaker 2 (52:06):
Yeah, if like kind of all the Danish books did
the black edged books, I.

Speaker 1 (52:11):
Think that still would have been too much. I think
just leaving it as it is is perfect.

Speaker 2 (52:15):
Yeah, I agree with that, because there's so much color
on these books that I think anymore would have I
actually like the white edges here with the book. I
think that they go so well, so I'm glad they
did not go that route.

Speaker 1 (52:31):
Yes, but overall, outstanding book. Get one of these or
all of these. They are so.

Speaker 2 (52:37):
Cool, and we'll put I'll put like I said, I'll
put the links on my website, on their selective pages,
and we'll have them in those stories as well on Instagram,
so easy to find. They're easy to find. Or if
you don't even want to do that and wait for
me to remember to do that, you can go and
just look at who the publisher is and find their website.

(52:58):
It's not hard.

Speaker 3 (53:00):
Right.

Speaker 1 (53:22):
With all of that being said, that's all the time
we have today an episode four of season five of Dialogue.
Alie Carly is on Instagram with all the pretty books.
I'm on there at Doctor and Eric you'd like to
get in touch with us. Peter and Melanie are not
here this episode, but Melanie is on Instagram at the

(53:43):
Harry Potter Collection. Peter is of course at the Potter
Collector as well as on YouTube. You can check out
his Potter Collector channel. We mentioned he has that new
video with min Alima in London. Yeah, so check that out.
And if you missed the Advent Calendar. I think he
calls it Advent Calendar Week where he goes through all
the MMA calendars. Check that out as well. This podcast

(54:05):
is on Instagram at Dialogue Allie Podcast. We also have
Carly's website All the Pretty Books dot net, this website
which is Dialogue Ali dot com, and of course Peter's website,
The Potter Collector dot com. You can find this podcast
everywhere you listen to things. But please, we say this
every episode. If you enjoy the show, please please please

(54:26):
leave us a review, a written review if possible, or
just you know, a one through five star rating. Hopefully
this is at least a four for you if you're
here listening to this, I would think it's a little
higher than that, but whatever, it's your your choice, but
please leave us a review. It really does help the
show get noticed by more fans of the Harry Potter universe.
And like we said, we're always finding new people in

(54:48):
this book collecting community to interact with, which is so cool.
And speaking of our community, we have a fantastic community
of listeners and some of them are also double fantastic
because they support us on Patreon. So if you support
this podcast at patreon dot com, slash dialogue Alli for

(55:08):
as low as three dollars a month, you can not
only support what we do, but you can get access
to our discord, which is a chat room of sorts
that lets you interact with and engage with other fans
of the show. And everyone on there has specific book interests.
So whether you like collecting translations, you're looking for signed books,
if you're looking to buy or sell some of your translations,

(55:31):
there's always people you know, buying and selling translations, and
we just mentioned again group orders of these books. If
you're like, man, I really want to get some of
these translations, but you know that shipping from Europe is expensive,
well we have you know, not workarounds, but we have
ways to sort of minimize that shipping cost for people,
which is it's so cool. It's really just a great

(55:54):
community feel. So lastly, thank you for listening, because just
listening to the show supports us and we love doing
this for all of you, and you know a little
bit for ourselves because it's nice to you know, book
some time on the calendar to talk with Carly and
Peter and Melanie a book Harry Potter books. Especially when

(56:16):
we get such good books to talk about. Like you said, yes,
European Portuguese books.

Speaker 2 (56:21):
We love to talk about new cover art.

Speaker 1 (56:24):
Oh yes we do. But that is all the time
we have on Dialogue Ali, the Official Potter Collector podcast.
So it's time to walk back through the archway and
into all of our daily lives and we will catch
you next time.

Speaker 2 (56:37):
Bye bye,
