Speaker 1 (00:00):
Three up, two across, tap that play button three times,
and walk through the archway into Dialogue Al. Hello, and
(00:23):
welcome to Dialogue Ali, the Official Otter Collector podcast about
Harry Potter books, book translations, and all other things magical.
I'm Eric, I'm Kylie Very and the two you are
very excited and I should get way more excited. And
the two of us are Harry Potter book translation collectors.
(00:45):
That means we collect Harry Potter books from all over
the world and we talk about them on this show.
We had to rearrange a few things. Normally, we we
had a great plan to record tonight with a special guest.
We have to postpone that a week due to some
illness with one of our other teammates on the podcast.
(01:06):
I'll let you guess who that may be. Hint, it's Melanie.
She was back for one she made it one episode.
She was back for one episode and then she's out again.
That's okay, but we all know it's I don't know, Carly.
You work at a hospital. We've had tons of sick
people up up here too, and it's just around right now.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Flew a respiratory COVID. All of that's been so bad.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
It's just going around everywhere. So many kids at my
school are sick. Got the neuroviruses back.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Oh that's been a bad one too. That has wiped
out people at my department.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Oh so stay healthy, everybody, wash those hands, stay home
if you're sick, right, drink lots of water. I don't know,
I don't know what else I could say, but anyway,
So Carly and I we had plans to do something.
We're going to push that back a week. So it's
still going to happen, so don't worry. But today Carl
and are going to continue one of the series that
(02:01):
we started not too long ago that we love doing,
and it's the series where we talk about mini box
sets or box sets that contain less than the full
seven books. So last time we had this as our topic,
we talked about the Green German box set that was
just four books, and this time we're going to talk
(02:23):
about a different box set from the UK that is
only three books. So that is our main topic tonight.
That we'll go into the translation of the show, which
is a book from this particular box set. And before that, though,
we do actually have some really important news. So I'm
glad we're still recording today because some really awesome stuff
just dropped, so I say we get right into it. Yeah,
(03:08):
so big news. And this was posted in our discord.
I don't know who saw it first, Kyl, do you
remember who saw it first?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
No, but it's beautiful.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
There's a lot of beautiful. It's just exploding in our discord.
There's a lot of a lot of discourse going on
about it. It is the twenty fifth anniversary box set
from Japan, and this set is gorgeous. It's limited to
two thousand boxes, so very similar to the French Room
(03:39):
Requirement set that has a limited number. I don't know
if this Japanese set will have the number on the box.
I'm hoping it does.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Do we know if they're they're hardcover, aren't they?
Speaker 1 (03:49):
As far as I know, as far as I didn't look.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
At them too much because I'm in book jail.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yeah, and thanks for mentioning book jail, because this set
is not cheap. And I will say too, it seems
like all the books have their own volume in this
set versus some of the other Japanese sets that have
books split into two or more parts. Because just the
size of the of the book we.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Talk in the hardcover first edition Japanese books, Yeah, five, six, seven,
I don't remember. Four is our different volumes, even the hardcover.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Yeah, they're in two parts, Melanie and I covered that
on our episode about Harry Potter books that come in
multiple parts. So that's a good listen if you haven't
listened to that one, because there's actually a lot more
than you would think. But this box set is just gorgeous.
I'll try to describe it again. It's very simple though,
and that's why I like it. It's it's black. All
(04:47):
the books are black, but the cover is like just
a gold image and it's just like one image. So
one of the books, like Book seven, is just like
a lightning bolt and Book one. Book one looks just
to be like a phoenix, kind of snitch type thing.
I think it's a snitch. Technically it looks like it
looks like a snitch with feet. Yeah, but it's it's
(05:12):
just spectacular. Book two and it's hard for me to tell.
Book two is a phoenix for sure. Book three is
some sort of patronis yet it also looks like serious
in dog form, which is cool, with like a dementor
coming out of the top, which is great. Book four
is the Goblet of Fire with a maze on the inside.
(05:33):
Book five is a Thesterraal wrapped around the prophecy. Book
six is the Dumbledore Ring, but it's like the base
of the pensive with like like little mist coming up.
And then book seven is a lightning Bolt, but it's
Hogwarts Castle built into it. Also it's very simple, but
they're very detailed, and it looks like the side edge
is gold as well. So this set is just spectacular.
(05:56):
And it's so spectacular Carly that I bought it because
I know I normally don't even have.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
To sell it to you. During the podcast.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
That I showed it to my wife and she was like, Oh,
we should get that. That's that's great looking and it's.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Got doesn't it have gold edges?
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Yep, And it's a phenomenal. Like I'm really trying to
figure out how I can finagle myself into buying this,
and I'm just in book jail. I've got some other
book deals that I've been working on, and I just
can't justify all of it.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
I know, but I'm trying the same reason. It's the
exact same reason I don't buy everything. I can't justify
buying everything because it's a lot of money. So I
kind of have to pick and choose when I drop
money on books these days. And I was like limited edition,
only two thousand of them made.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
That's it's it's it's part of and it's rare or
will be rare, right, and it it's also a translation,
and I happen to love rare things and translation. So
it's stuff that I'm just now naturally drawn to. I'm
probably gonna wind up buying at you guys, it's just
I've got to I've got to figure stuff out.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
I will say, if you want to buy it, anyone listening,
it's very easy to do. So it's on Amazon Japan.
That's where I got mine this afternoon. It just took
a little little trickiness searching for it on Amazon Japan.
So if you look up the title of Harry Potter
in Japanese and copy and paste that in there, that helps,
(07:28):
or if you search by JK. Rowling, you can scroll
down and you'll eventually get to it. But yeah, it's
it's actually easy to buy, but unfortunately it is a
little pricey. So I think, after all was said and done.
And remember I usually I pay with a credit card
in the currency of the country, so I paid the
(07:50):
credit card in yen with no foreign transaction fees, So
I save money on any sort of fees for me
to my bank or Amazon, because foreign Amazon sites can
imediately will change things to US dollars for you, but
they do they do take a percentage of that transaction.
So we've talked about that a lot of times foreign
(08:10):
transaction fee are a credit card with no foreign transaction fees,
that was the way to go. But when all of
a sudden done with shipping to the United States from Japan,
I was in at about fifty three thousand yen, which
comes to just over three hundred US dollars. It was
like three twenty three eighteen somewhere in there. I can't
remember the exact number. But the US dollar to Japanese
(08:34):
yen is really really good right now for people paying
with US dollars. So now is the best time. It's not, yeah,
it's the best time ever to be buying something that
costs a lot of money in yen. So I really
really hope that this box that arrives and it matches
(08:56):
that price tag that premium price tag because so often
we see these, you know, premium deluxe sets or special
edition sets or limited edition sets, and they don't necessarily
justify what you pay for it to be limited edition.
But the positive examples of that are like the deluxe
(09:16):
edition illustrated books. Right, you pay more, but you definitely
get more. You do not feel bad about spending the
extra money to get that. So that's kind of how
I'm hoping this set, you know, makes me feel when
it arrives. So we'll wait and see it. Mine should
be here in a week. Today's the twenty third. It
(09:37):
should be here on the thirtieth, so by the time
we're recording next episode, I might have it already, which
is pretty exciting.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
We'll see where I stand.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Yeah, well, I do know. I was talking to Sean
Potter Glott about it because he def he bought one already,
and you said, Peter bought one already, And there's a
couple other people in our discord that have bought it already.
So of these two thousand and special edition sets, there's
at least we know a lot of the buyer already
coming to North America, Like we're getting them out of Japan,
(10:09):
which I don't always feel great about. But at the
same time, I'm not going to I'm not going to
resell this. I'm keeping it. I know some people might
resell it if it all of a sudden goes for
like five thousand dollars or something. Maybe if it gets
to that point, I would consider doing it. But yeah,
it's it's weird when you know, we've encountered that with
(10:31):
publishers too, or all of a sudden they get like
a a big influx of emails from foreign book collectors
to that country. They're like, oh, who are you? Why
are you interested in buying forty copies of my book
in Portuguese? Like, oh, okay.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
And I've certainly been publishers like why do you need
ten copies of the Bosnian Philosopher's Stone.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Yes, oh that's yeah. That's a good example. When they
reprinted the Bosnian books and they came out with the finally
they finished the set, you got all these people that
were not Bosnian speakers buying the book. It's just yeah,
it is is plight. But I would say in terms
of buying the set, it's so easy and it's it's
(11:17):
virtually headache free. Amazon Japan has an English facing side
of their website, so you don't even have to navigate
with Google Translate or anything. It's just it's really easy
to find.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
So I would say the majority of my Japanese books,
which is a lot, have come from Amazon Japan. They're easy.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Yeah, me too. It's great that usually shipping's great too.
And I'm talking all this up before I get it,
so hopefully this set it'll be.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
It'll be fine, It'll be like butta it will be.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
But yes, that that's the big news that I was
paying attention to, Karl, Is there any other big I
have big news.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I have in my collection again an Askaban advance reader
copy from Scholastic, which is it's in my.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Favorite one of that's my favorite one of the three.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
It's I go back and forth, but I love the
harlequin pattern on it. It's the you know. And I
actually did a video on it form my YouTube channel,
which I'm going to edit tonight. It'll be out tomorrow
about the book. So yay. I'm really excited to own that.
And I'm working on some other fun book stuff. So
I've got book stuff like personal book stuff. That's my news.
(12:25):
It's vague.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
That's fine. I feel like we already talked about major
translation news, yeah, for the general public versus our own
personal celebrations, which are just as just as valid because
we're book collectors and we right.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Yeah, and we've got great stuff for next week's show too,
so we do.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
Hopefully everyone's still healthy and feeling great. But I also
got another guest locked in today as well, so another
one coming up in the future I've.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Been working about. I've been working on another one, so
that's possibly.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Three, oh my goodness. And there's another one I know
of that already said yes, so that's four. So it's
gonna be a guest heavy next couple of weeks for
uh yeah, which is exciting. I like that. So anyway,
should we talk about more books, Carly?
Speaker 2 (13:17):
I would love to talk about more books?
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Eric, all right, let's do it in our main segment.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Carly, alrighty. So this little box set, I'm actually gonna
(13:49):
unbox it right now because I want to know when
it first was published because it's so fun. It's published
by Bloomsbery UK and it is the first three books
and the box set is titled The Magic Begins and
it what.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
What I love about Magical Adventure beginning.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Begins this I remember coming out when I was living
in San Antonio. So this paper, yeah, twenty thirteen is
I think when the set came out. That's when the
book is stated in Philosopher's Stone. So this box set is,
(14:28):
like I said, it's soft cover the first three books one,
you know, one through three, and it's in like a
cloth slipcase. It's quite tiny. It's about the same size
as the original first box set, which was the first
three books from Bloomsbery when they when it was the
original one through three, askabat before we had really any
(14:48):
of the other books out.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
This box set with the books inside is smaller than
the American Goblet of Fire book by a decent amount,
by by a decent amount. Yes, it's alms.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
It's a little bit wider actually, probably than the US Azkaban,
which is just wild. But it's got gold foiling on
the front, back and sides. It's got a JK. Rolling
gold foiling signature and the Bloomsberry logo and the titles
of the books, and it's the same art on the
front and the back side of the box. But it's
(15:21):
really really delightful Also, what I think is interesting is
that this box is only found in one through three,
and it was meant to be a books one through three,
like for somebody who might want some light summer reading.
Is kind of what I always think of when I
see these. I'm not sure if they want to invest
in all of the Harry Potter books, if they're going
to like to read it so they can start off
(15:43):
with this box set. I don't remember what I paid
for mine, but I bought my new but it was
pretty affordable.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Yeah, mine is pretty affordable. Also, the like, I'd never
heard of this until I was just randomly scrolling. I
don't even remember what side it was on, but I
saw just a book one on there, and like Carly mentioned,
the cover of the box set is just this kind
of lighter blue color with gold foiling. Each of the
individual books on the inside are a solid color with
(16:14):
gold foilings. And the jewel stones we have, Yeah, the
Philosopher's ston is reddish, yeah, and blue, and then ask
Ben's green just like you would see it.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
They're almost they remind me almost of paperback versions of
the UK Deluxe editions. It's that same jewel tone and
they have got gold foiling on the cover. They don't
have the cover art, but they've got wonderful gold foiling
with a single image from each of the books on
the cover, Like Philosopher's Stone is of course the Train.
(16:45):
We have a basilisk on Chamber of Secrets, and we
have this the patronis on Azkaban, and the cover art
is only available on this set. You can't find it
anywhere else. And the books aren't sold separately.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Well unless you buy them used. So that's what I
was going to say. I saw this Philosopher's Stone book
on I don't know if it was a books or
if it was on book the Pository when that was
a thing still, or even eBay or Amazon used. I
don't know where I saw it, but I saw it
and it was like six dollars with free shipping, so
I'm like, hey, I'll buy it. So I bought it
(17:21):
and it arrived and I was kind of like looking
on the inside and you know, realizing like, well, how
come there aren't more of these? And then I was like, well, hey,
there are more of these. They come into a little
box sets. So then I was able to find the
box set too. I think I actually bought mine on
Amazon UK because it came brand new, mine still sealed,
(17:42):
and like Carly said, it wasn't that much. It was
maybe under thirty dollars. Yeah, like it was not expensive.
So I don't I don't regret buying this because it
is it's just this cool little set and it really
does look good on my shelf, like I have it
displayed with the the cover part outwards. But I do
(18:02):
agree with you, Carly, that this was meant to be
for someone to introduce them to kind of the series
in general. And how many people have we talked to
that have kind of shared the opinion that you can't
really judge the Harry Potter series by just reading the
first book. So many story like the overarching story doesn't
(18:26):
really get cooking until book three ends. That's really when
like kind of the whole intro to the major problem
of the series like emerges and then you dive really
deep into baldemort Is coming back. He's going to be
a big deal. We have to figure out how to
(18:47):
stop him. Because book one it's like, oh, we stopped him.
Book two it's like, oh, it's a ghosts serious black. Yeah,
So each of those books kind of ended with a
like a definite that was the end, because you didn't know,
if you know, when they were being written, if they
were going to continue on, if you know, Bloomsburg is
going to keep publishing these books and letting JK. Rowlling
(19:11):
write more. So I do feel like the first three
really kind of you know, I'll go together in terms
of kind of tone and.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Well, and they really are so the beginning of like,
if you're looking at the overarching story, it really is
the beginning. It is the intro to the whole story.
Book three h at the end is a huge cliffhanger
for one, like much more so than books two and one.
I mean, you wanted to read the others that were following,
(19:42):
but book three it's a lot more intense. There's a
lot of going on and you realize that this is
going to be an ongoing problem. So it's enough to
get you really interested in the series. So but it
really is just the introduction of the books, like book
one is just a part of the intro if you're
looking at the story arc.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Yeah, that's a great point. There really aren't any cliffhangers
at the end of books one or two. It's like
it ends and you're like, oh, I like that. If
there was a sequel, I would read it because I
would probably like that too. Versus at the end of
book three, you're thinking, oh my gosh, like what's gonna happen?
Like Voldemort? Is he going to come back? Is Wormtail
going to find him? Is you know, what's gonna happen
(20:21):
with Serious Black? Because he's free, but he's he's gone,
but he's still in touch with Harry and things are getting.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
A little little dislike of the intense dislike of Snape
at the end of three is so much more so
than the.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
Other books versus like.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Arc really starts to take off and take shape at
that point.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
Yeah. Absolutely, And you know, in in contrast to the
first two books, three, four, five, and six all end
with like major like questions, like you're like, what's going
to happen to this person? How are they going to
deal with that? I can't wait to find out what
happens to so and so? And those questions really didn't
(21:02):
exist after the first two books. I mean, unless like
I wonder if Neville can ever make us do a
spell right right? Like you know, there are like major
plot cliffing, but.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
I think it's a brilliantly done box set. I love
how beautifully and differently it's done. It sticks out and
it does grab your attention. Like whoever put this together
did well, and there's not to date been another box
set to finish this out, Like it really is just
meant to be exactly what it is, like a great
starter for building a you know, the Magical Journey, like
(21:42):
a great intro into the series. I love that.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
Yeah, which I think it's kind of interesting that they
don't have a follow up, because like, why don't they
have books four, five, six, and seven called like.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
The Magical Journey continues.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
The Magical Adventure concludes or something or continues. Yeah, I
don't know why they didn't finish it. But it's also,
like we mentioned, it's very affordable and it's very small.
It doesn't take up a lot of room on your shelf.
We'll go into more of this in a little bit,
but the books themselves are very readable. They're they're you know,
(22:21):
the paperback books, they're comfortable, they're light, it's it's just
a great set to get someone that hasn't read these books. Yeah,
and that's what I do, honestly, Carly the my first
one here, the red one that is kind of just
all by itself because I have it again in the
box set. That's my like, if someone wants to read
the book for the first time, this is like my
(22:42):
loaner copy, like here you go, go, there you go.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
It's not it's not valuable, it's it's clearly been read
and it holds up really well. So it's because it's
so thin, right, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
And they did, speaking of like why did and they
continue on, they did republish The Magical Adventures Begins box
set featuring the Johnny Duddle cover art I don't know,
and it comes in its own little box and it's
very much the same, only the front cover of the
box is the Johnny Douttle Book one. The back cover
of the box is the Johnny doutdele Book three cover
(23:18):
because it's only books one through three again, and it's
laid out very much the same. There's I guess it
looks like gold foiling. It's not raised though.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
Maybe got raised. It definitely has a.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Shimmer and it's got you know, the book titles on
the side, the backside edge, and so they just really
meant for it to be just an introduction to that.
I don't know. I know you can still find that
Johnny Douddell Magical Adventure Begins very easily. I've not looked
for the other since I've had it for so long
(23:52):
that I don't know if they're how readily available there
they were. I would think pretty commonly though, So I
don't think that there's a lot of monetary value to
the first edition of the Magical Edition. Magical Journey Begins
a box set, but and I bought the second one
because I like Johnny Dudle cover art and it's a
short set and it looked cute.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Yeah, And I think the notable the notable takeaway from
the Johnny Duddle set existing in just the three books
is that that means that Bloomspray is not publishing the
original one anymore. So it's it's not like they're still
making it and you can find it. It's definitely not
in production anymore, because they've updated the artwork.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
And the books in the at least in my Johnny
Doutdell Magical Adventure Begins set are there later their forty
fourth print for Philosopher's Stone, So I think it was
a later idea. They just the others. They either went
out or didn't want to, you know, reprint whatever it was.
I think the first edition is no longer in print.
(24:56):
I don't know how easy they are to find, but
I figure they did moved on with the Duddle because
they have so many.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
Yeah, and I think by that time too. It's also
as simple as the original set is, it doesn't really
stick out to children necessarily, Like, no, it was something
very Yeah, that's what I was going to say. It
looks like something that you might give an adult, or
(25:27):
to give someone that just knows about Harry Potter already.
But then I don't know why you're getting them the
first three books again, unless they collect books like we do.
But I think going with the Duddle art for someone
to get them excited about it as a kid, I
think that's a smart move. Honestly.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Well, then they can complete the set, like they can
buy the rest of the Duddle books should they want to.
They don't. They can't complete the set in the original
edition as it was published, And for all we know,
they could have had enough collectors email them asking for
them to finish the set and they just said no,
we're going to discontinue all together. Sure, well, because I know,
like the Harry Potter collector base can be that way
(26:06):
to a degree.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
Well, right, and and us as collectors, I think it would.
I'm speaking for you too, but it would definitely annoy
me if this was my original set and I wanted
more of the books and I did it, I got
all seven and they didn't match.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
Oh yeah, I couldn't do that. That would bother to
go buy another box set.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
Yeah, so then you'd end up owning, you know, two
versions of this book. And let's say you didn't need
to collect multiple copies, you just wanted one of each.
You're stuck with this kind of SMSs, which it could be.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
Partly how some of the books were parted out is
they were like, well, I nobody wants them, they want
the full set, so I'll just give them away or
sell them.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
Yeah, probably exactly how it happened. Or the box got
destroyed and yeah, who.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Knows, yeah who It could be any number of things,
but yeah, beautiful, beautiful box sets and really really fun
to have and kind of different like the other short
sets that we've talked aren't that we own We've talked
about one, but most of the other ones that I
can think of, especially that they were all published as
(27:11):
short sets before the series was finished. This one came out.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Yeah, that's a good point that German said that we
talked about on our last episode that we did many
box sets on Yeah, the whole series wasn't done yet,
so I know, especially in the US. I mentioned this
before on the last episode we talked about box sets,
like only books one, two, and three were out in
the US when I got that box set of books one,
(27:37):
two and three, So you know, there's even like the
box set of books one and two in the UK
when those were the only two out. So yeah, publisher
is definitely like started pushing out box sets before the
series was done. But this is not the case for
this particular.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
Set, which is why it was done.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
And they a special place in my heart for just
being its own thing. And I like that.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Yeah, same, same, same, But.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
You don't Also I like Carly the Tots. Yeah, and
we should, uh we should talk about one of the
books from this uh this.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
We should tots it up.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
M h m hm.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
H m hm hm. So the Tots for this time
(28:51):
is going to be the Philosopher's Stone from the original
The Magic Adventure The Magical Adventure Begins box set. The
box set itself looks to have been published in twenty thirteen,
according to the copyright page on the books. My books
are first print of that edition, which won't add much
value here, but it's fun and yeah, really cool. Sorry
(29:18):
I was reading the copyright page.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
That's okay, I can tell.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
I got distracted by books, which is the whole part
of the podcast. The backside of the book is really
neat because it's also a little train at the top,
and then you have a little bit of a synopsis
as well. Also interesting showing that these weren't available for
sale individually. There's not a price on the back of
the books.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
There's not, but there is an ICPN on the book
that is not the same as the ice pan on
the box set, which I think is kind of interesting.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
It's interesting. I'm looking at the rest of mine to see. Yeah,
there's no price on it of them, but all the
ice bans are different, so I don't understand that if
they weren't available for sale independently. The cover art of
these is actually Joe McLaren.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
Okay, that's cool. Yeah, I like that we have a
name because it is cool art. I really do like it.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
I do, and we don't have any.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
Oh, I would say my box set does have a
price tag of twenty one pounds at the bottom.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Right, I want to say that's what I paid for
the Doddle as well.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Yeah, so I'm just saying that is the value because
unless you get this book used, you can't buy it
unless you buy the bond. So yeah, worst case, you
paid twenty one pounds new, which is not expensive at all,
and it's I don't think it's hard to find. Still, humm,
(30:57):
what now.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
You're Johnny Doddell. I was looking at my Johnny Dundle
box set to see what the price was and it's
in rubies.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
So I was like, well, I didn't do that intentionally.
And then I looked at the copyright page. And I've
been wanting for so long to have a Harry Potter
book that was printed in India because Bloomsberry has the
presence there and they do pint English books there, and
I have a whole set.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
No, no, there you go.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
It's on my shelves, just sit in a way. Yeah,
it's printed and bound, printed abound in India by Thompson
Press India Limited. How cool is that? I have no clue.
I thought I bought this on Amazon, like sold by Amazon,
(31:43):
but that wouldn't have been the case. If so, Now
I'm condigaed there could be.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
I mean sometimes they exchange stock. Like I bought an
Elephant book once on Amazon and like the UK version
showed up, and I was like, that's interesting.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
I don't know. I'm trying. I don't actually know where
I bought this now that I think about it, because
I really don't. I haven't traveled to India, so I
wouldn't have bought it there, and I don't know. Anyway,
I have India book Harry Potter books from India.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
Now fantastic.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
I'm a bit jealous, I would say, me too, But
how cool is that?
Speaker 1 (32:21):
All right, well, let's get back to the Philosopher's Stone.
Copy from the original Magical Adventure begins set. We should
smell it. We should smell it, Carly Oh, mine smells
like a paperback book, really, and that is a good thing.
(32:42):
It's not an amazing thing, but I'm giving mine an
a for acceptable because it's fine.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Mine smells excellent. It is like outstanding minus fine. Has
never been read though, and it has literally just lived
in a shelf on a box, so it has that
wonderful fresh glue smell, oh, wonderful paper and ink. It
(33:10):
smells brand new. So it's like it's not outstanding, that's
a high caliber, but it's like outstanding minus a plus.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
But yeah, it is. Mine's good. Mine's a good smell.
That's acceptable for me.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Yeah, I mean it's not bad. We've certainly had those.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Oh yeah, we definitely have. What's our next category, size
and proportion.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Outstanding. I love the size and proportions of this book.
As a kid, I would have read it because it
would have fit my little hands. As an adult, I'm
still kid sized and it fits my little hands.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
I agree, it's outstanding. To me. It is the perfect
size for a paperback book.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Yeah, you can. You can travel with it easily, you know,
you can typically school.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
Typically, the big flaw for paperback books is they get
too wide and they're not tall enough. Because this is
only the first like three books in the series. The
height that they picked, the width never gets to be
too much, even if you look at like book three,
it's not too thick. Oftentimes we say, like Book one
come out and it's like really short, Like Okay, what's
(34:30):
going to happen when they get to book five in
this set? But I don't have to worry about that
because they only did books one, two and three. So
the fact that they could purposefully yeah, this is a
purposefully picked a size that really fit book one, two
and three. So I agree it's an outstanding How it
feels in your hands, Carly, I want to go first
(34:52):
on this one. It feels great, outstanding, shall I say?
I'm going to give it an outstanding?
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Same? I love it. I love how sharp the corners
are of the spine, and it feels like a well
made book, and like how sleek and glossy the front
the covers are. But it's not going to slip out
of your hand either, Nope.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
And the embossed shiny goldness on the front feels you're
on the on the regular cover. So I like that
paper feels good. And I will say like when you
open it, you can read it pretty easily. It's very
like reader friendly, whether you're at the front or the back.
(35:33):
That's always a big qualm sometimes when you read like
the very beginning or the very end of a book,
it doesn't feel great when you're holding it, but not
this book. It feels great.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
Yeah, I agree, I agree.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
Oh what is next? Quality of the book? Yours has
been mine's been read, and it still holds up really well.
I do have a very difficult time giving any paperback
book and outstanding. However, however, I do want to give
this one like an exceeds expectations. Plus it's very very
(36:08):
close because my copy that's been read a lot of
times still looks pretty good.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
Start great on camera.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
It does. It's starting to poof up just a little bit,
like all paperback books do after you've read them. But
the spine is still great. Yeah, it does not even
than to it. No, And I think that's due to
impart by doing part to the little groove that they
have on the cover next to the spine, which kind
of alleviates that stress on the actual spine when you're
(36:39):
reading it. But I'm very impressed with this book. You
can outstanding.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
These feel like they get sturdy or bound than the
original first edition, which was cheaply made. These are a
little bit better made, and they definitely like Eric's has
been read I don't know how many times, but it's
been read, and usually the Bloomsberry paperbacks, if they've been
read a few times, they start to show where pretty fast,
(37:08):
especially the first edition, and Eric's looks very good on camera.
Corners are still sharp, the spine is still square, the
paper is a really good quality or better quality paper
than the original first edition Bloomsbery is what it looks
like because it's not yellowing, and the foiling, despite being worn,
is still pretty intact. From what I've seen on Eric's copy,
(37:29):
I'm going to give mine an outstanding because mine is
brand new, so my mine is a little bit.
Speaker 1 (37:36):
The only thing that would take it up to an
outstanding for me is that there are no frills of
any kind in this book. You open it, it's the
copyright page, it's the title page, the book starts, you
get to the end, and it's the The book actually
ends at the very bottom of the last page two
twenty three, and then the next page is the end
of like it's the back cover. That's the point.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
But that's how they kept the cot down, you know exactly,
extra pages take up that's money.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
Yeah, So I would have hoped though, like, because this
is a box set of the first three like the
Adventure begins, that there would be something extra like a
little special picture at the beginning, or there isn't even
a picture on the title page. It's just words. So
I was like an.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Audience for this set may have been more like young
adult adult because what the Johnny Duddell re re release
of this edition, I feel like it is more geared
toward younger readers.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Yeah, I agree with that. I was just would hope
for just just something like come on, I'm still like,
I just want one extra thing, Like.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
I agree, I'm not knocking it.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
Maybe a picture of all three of the cover pages
like in the book, like there's no there's no not.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Even any adverts, which is rare for this.
Speaker 1 (38:56):
Right, well, there's there's nothing inside the book itself that
shows you it's part of this special box set. Like
I would have liked there to be a page that
says the Magical Adventure begins or something, but it's all
over the time.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
That's so maybe they thought we got.
Speaker 1 (39:11):
I know, but just in the book, I would have
liked there to be that. That's just me. Okay, Now
I can stop being crumpy about that because we can talk.
We can talk about the cover art, which I think
it's outstanding because of its simplicity, and I love the
theme of the whole box, so I'm giving it an
(39:32):
outstanding for what it is. It's just so.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
Cool, outstanding for me. Also interesting is that the name
of the illustrator or cup yeah, illustrator, is not on
the back of book one. It's only in the backs
of book two and three. I don't understand this.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
It's kind of weird.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
So maybe Joe McLaren didn't design this. But I don't
know why they would pick a different illustrator for books
two and three when they look identical. I'm unsure here.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Yeah, it doesn't stay.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
On the copyright page who the illustrator is, so I
don't know what happened. But Joe McLaren is probably the
illustrator of book one. He's certainly the illustrative books two
and three, and I like his art. Good job, and
he's a new illustrator. He's not an illustrator we have
on any of the other Harry Potter books. So the
art is unique.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
To this set, which is exciting. We like when there
is unique art to certain sets. Lastly, the X factor,
I mean the fact that it exists like, that's my factor.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
You took me if I had.
Speaker 1 (40:37):
To pick it, if I had to pick a tangible thing.
I really do love how shiny the gold is on
the front. It really is. It totally pops against the
solid color behind it on all three books, but I
mean definitely Book one. Yeah, it just looks It looks
(40:57):
so cool.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
I love this box set. It is something that if
you know me and you've come to see my book collection,
you know that I'm wild about showing you books and
my collection. This is one of the ones that I
show people because it is so pretty and it is
so different from the other Harry Potter art and it
reminds me so much of the Deluxe UK editions, kind
(41:18):
of like a paperback take on them, only they didn't finish.
And I really I like the similarities and the differences
between the two. Yes, beautiful set, beautiful set.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Does your cover like the gold that goes around the edge,
Does it like have little breaks in it too? That's
intentional And I do think that is a little nice
touch on there.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
It looks like a worn map.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
It looks like it's worn, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Like pre pre faded or pre stressed genes or whatever.
They call it with by jeans that have all the
holes that you didn't make. Yeah, but it's fashionable.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
And I do like that they didn't go too far
with it, like it's just a little bit aware. It's
not like it looks like it's been you know, Harry's rocks.
Speaker 2 (42:09):
Sack for a hundred years a year.
Speaker 1 (42:12):
Yeah, right, So I don't know. I guess if we're
recommending to get this book or this box set, I
would two thumbs up recommend getting it. I think it's
a great addition to your collection.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
Agreed, agreed, or for that especially.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
Someone this Valentine's Day that hasn't read Harry Pott.
Speaker 2 (42:31):
I would definitely buy it over the Johnny Duddell edition
of The Adventure begins. If you have a choice, good choice.
Speaker 1 (42:39):
I agree with that choice.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
And I think that's the toast.
Speaker 1 (43:05):
I think that's the tots. And I think because we
said that's the tots, that means that's the That's the
