Speaker 1 (00:00):
Three up, two across, tap that play button three times,
and walk through the archway into Dialogue AL. Hello, and

(00:23):
welcome to Dialogue ALI, the Official Potter Collector podcast about
Harry Potter books, book translations, and all other things magical.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I'm Eric, I'm Melanie, I'm Carly.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Hey, and the three of us are Harry Potter book
translation collectors, which means we collect Harry Potter books from
all over the world. We say that every time. I
feel like we have to, though.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
I feel like we do because we collect Harry Potter books.
But there's like, I know people that collect like just
us source or stuff and have so so many of them.
Oh yeah, I've seen them, not necessarily all over the world.
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Well, someone in our one of our patreons has like
it's it's Sean. He has like all like prints one.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Michel yeah whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, yeah, it's really cool. I have one through. I
have one through eleven. I think we're up to like one.
It's got to be like one ten plus at this point. One.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah, and he's trying to get at the bookstore, was
like one twenty.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
I have printing one hundred somewhere in this room. It's
pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
I'm curious. I want to know what the one. I'll
look at it later. I want to know what the
one that I bought from the Wizarding World that has
the little seal on it. That's got to be a
later one.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
I have one hundredth print with the seal, and Melanie
and Peter signed it.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Oh that's special.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Yeah, should have had the employee that sold it to
you sign it.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
I didn't think about that. I already had to ask
for the.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Luke Jezebel yep, Nate, Nate, It's probably Nate any who.
So the three of us are Harry Potter book collectors
and we are here to talk about Harry Potter books,
which is something we all love talking about, which is
why we have this podcast. Peter couldn't make it tonight,

(02:25):
so it's just the three of us, which is totally
fine because we are just as exciting and we have
some cool things to talk about. So we have a
news segment and we're doing one of our favorite things
is talking about the art on our Harry Potter books today,
which for me, that's like one of the main reasons
why I started collecting Harry Potter books from around the world.

(02:46):
Because the art was different on the books. So we're
going to get into that, and then one of those
books that we will talk about today will be our
translation of the show.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
So I was just thinking, Eric.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
And yeah, we can talk about this.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Live, you know, like this is just a natural conversation,
Like we already picked our translation to the show, but
the book that we're talking about in the news, we
should have done for the translation of the show, even
though we already typed up the whole thing. So maybe
we'll do that one next time. Ye did we do
that one already?

Speaker 1 (03:19):
I don't know, did we, Carly?

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Do you know?

Speaker 3 (03:23):
I don't think so.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Actually no, I don't think we have.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Huh, all right, well it'll be a spoiler alert because
we're going to be talking about a very special book
that Eric just got in the news, and we'll just
do that and we'll just do it as a translation
to the show.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
We've done that one as a translation, we have, That's
what I was asking. Yeah, sorry, I didn't know the
book that na. Oh okay, Well okay, well let's let's
just get into the news.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah, tell me more about.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
What we're rambling about. M all right, So for the

(04:25):
news today, you got me again. I'm Eric, and here's
the news. What what?

Speaker 2 (04:31):
What?

Speaker 1 (04:32):
What? What? What?

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Carl is supposed to be doing the news? What are
you looking at?

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Oh, I'm looking at the wrong thing. Tommy, cut that out, Carly,
you're doing the news.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Hello, I'm Carly and I'm doing the news.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
And Eric, if you can find a way you could
keep that in, because that was kind of funny, dear Tommy.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Tommy is our editor and he's wonderful.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yes, Eric got a fun new Russian book. It is
the adult cover Russian Book One.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
Also known as the Orange Russian Book, and it's something
that we've been looking for, and by we, I mean
myself and I at a while.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Also known as the One that got Away, the One.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
That got Away Brock. It was one of our patreons
posted in our discord. I'm so happy that you got
this book, but I'm not gonna lie. I'm going to
miss the tension it caused between you and.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Why don't you tell the whole story?

Speaker 1 (05:35):
It's not that long of a story. But early on
my collecting journey and I was I already had a
book from Russia. I had the Igmont translation and the
newer one and like this book showed up on eBay
and I'm like, hey, this is really cool and what's

(05:56):
about it? Yeah, the Russian Orange Book because it's I
believe it's only one through five. Am I right on that?

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Yees?

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Yeah, they're they're just super cool. They're they're like black,
gray and orange and it's like this like yellowish orange.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
And orange favorite color.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
So my favorite color. And it is unique cover art
to those Russian books, which is even cooler. So like,
if I had to pick, if I only had to
have one of that Russian translation, I'd pick this one
over the Grand Prex art like every day of the week.
So here I am like, ooh, should I buy this
book on eBay? It was like dollars it was fifty

(06:39):
bucksh my gosh, that's even worse. But at the time,
I was still trying to get more translations, uh, just
in general. So I was like, do I spend fifty
bucks on this or do I buy you know, three
more translations that I could get all together for fifty bucks.
I went with that instead of getting this Russian book.

(06:59):
But I I told Melanie, I was like, hey, this
book's online and it looks pretty cheap. Should I get it,
and Melanie's like, no, because I just bought it.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
No, I already bought it, Eric, don't worry.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, because I already bought it. And so then I'm like, ah,
I should have just bought it because I knew that
that was a really good price for it. And then
I hadn't seen one again for a long time. Well,
and then the Russia invasion of Ukraine happened, and then
you know, everything was hard to get out of Russia too,
So there was something that you would find, but the

(07:33):
price would be marked way up, and it'd be shipping
from like Azerbaijan or somewhere near Russia, sometimes Poland, and
they were just a lot. And there is actually a
set on eBay right now for like four hundred and
fifty euro or something. It's a lot, and I didn't
want the whole.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
That's a lot. But that doesn't even feel that bad
for books one through five because not for nothing, like
all of them, but one is like the easiest to find,
but the rest of them are pretty really hard.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
I want to say, I paid almost five hundred dollars
for my set shipped out of Russia. This was before this.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
And that's I don't want all five. I just wanted
to book one like that was my goal. You did
it from the get go, and I did it. So Rob,
one of our patrons who's also in our discord, reached
out to me and said, hey, I know you've been
looking for this. I have one who'd like to buy it,
and I'd already just bought a Canadian school market edition
from him.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Oh right.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
We just mashed him up in the fantastic shipping order
and that arrived to me two days ago. So hooray.
I'm really happy, Like I got it, and it was
the price is very fair and it's just great. I'm
super happy I got that. That was one of the
books that I was just kind of passively always keeping an.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Eye waiting for it to find you.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Yeah, the books will come to you, I guess. So
really really cool. I'm super happy I got that, and
very thankful to Rob for reaching out to me with that.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
So yeah, great, super awesome.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
Yeah that's news over in Erictown. What else is going on?

Speaker 3 (09:07):
There is a The Tie twenty fifth anniversary is going
to be well, it's available for pre order now, but
it will be released the end of this month, which
is March, and it's actually pretty cool. I was looking
at it before before we started recording, and it features
the Grand Prex cover art, which the first edition Tie

(09:29):
did if I remember properly so, which is the cover
from the US books initially, but and then it has
the sprayed snitch edges. But the cover the Merry Grand
Prey is just a jacket around red wraps and it
has some additional things with it. It looks like a
really neat book. So I'm going to pre order mine tonight.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Isn't there another new book from Spain coming out that
has a red background with.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Like, yes, it's red background with a lightning bolt on
the straight edge. Yeah, edg that comes out?

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Yeah, SPRAI edges are trendic right now. Wait can we
just take a minute. And I think I want to
do like a whole episode on this about like book
trends because sprayed edges, no joke, are so in right
now and I feel like like the Fourth Wing series
had a huge to do with that. People customizing edges.

(10:26):
It's just side edges are in. And here's the thing,
Dear Scholastic, We've been telling you to do a sprayed
sidedge for years at this point, you would have been
ahead of the curve. How'd you listen to our podcasts
that explore.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Like Target edition with the sprayed side edge sold out everywhere,
and like even the signs at Target, why don't guess?
But like the signs at Target are like maximum two
per customer.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
It's like, guess, guess who has from two thumbs and
showed up to Target right as they open and got
two capies. This girl right here because obviously I needed
to get like the special edition crazy one and needed
to make sure it was a first print. And the
thing is, and this is a little bit of a tangent,

(11:14):
but I am going to talk about it is I
feel like collecting Harry Potter books is like ruined books
all other books for me, in that if I need
to go out and buy a book, I'm so particular
about the edition that I get. I'm so particular about
the the printings that I get, and a lot of
the times, like I'm late to the game when it

(11:36):
comes to Fourth Wing, and I'm kind of late to
the game when it comes to Acatar, and I'm like
getting into those now. But I when I first got
my first book, my first Fourth Wing book, I got
a paperback that had a really cool sprayed side edge,
so that was my reading copy. But then I couldn't

(11:58):
just have a reading copy. I had to have a
nice copy of on my shelf, so I got a
holiday edition hardcover of Fourth Wing. And then because I
had the paperback that I was reading, I had to
get Iron Flame in paperback, but it had to be
the same addition in the same size as my Fourth Wing,
so I had to get a special one. And then

(12:19):
I had to get a first printing of Iron Flame,
which I just so happened to find at Walmart, which
also has a sprayed side edge. And then I had
to be the crazy person waiting outside of Target when
Target first opened in the freezing cold, and I had
to run in front of people like I had to
walk fast like foopoo poo poo, poo poo poop. I

(12:42):
actually didn't have to run fast, because I even crazier
woke up at three am the night before when it
was released and refreshed my Target app a thousand times
and was able to get one and put it on hold,
and it took me a half an hour because the
site kept crashing. So well, that's the level of crazy,
like collecting Harry Potter books has turned into is setting

(13:04):
an alarm, waking up at three am and getting my
special limited edition target copy of Onyx Storm the.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
End with the spray, So I understand that with the
That's why we're talking about this everyone, just to remind
me beautiful my.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Favorite books that I love the stories of I have
wonderful editions of you have to and.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
And they have to be matching sets, like I can't
have like a paperback of this one and a hardcover
of this one, or if I do, I have to
have hardcover and paperback, like I am waiting for the
paperback of Onyx Storm so I can have them in
paperback and hardcover. Because now, but if.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
I'm going to read a book, it has to pass
the TOTS test, like it has to feel good in
my hand without proportions, like I'm that and I smell
the book. I do all of that in the store. Oh,
I don't have my camera on so I can't wave.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
But sorry, guys, there's a special podcast guest who's not
even like really at podcast guest. But we just had
a little like cameo from Eric's daughter, just like popped
on the screen. She's cute. She's got her blanket over
her head like a little like Russian stacking doll. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Oh but yeah, twenty fifth anniversary tie pre order out
at the end of the month. And that Spanish book
you can pre order and it is out in June.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Good job, Carly, thank you for getting us back on track.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
Yeah, greatage And now a free episode in the future
to come, or book trends episode right now.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Otherwise yeah, yeah, I was gonna keep going on about
that other tangent. I had to go back and we
have a snape for the HBO show, The Harry Potter Show.
I can't pronounce his name properly, so I apologize in advance,
but it's papa eased to do. He's a British actor.
I don't think I've seen anything he's been in. You

(15:01):
know what, I'm really as long as he plays a
great snape, I'm excited.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
I thought my computer was like an ultra creepy genius
because like I went on to Google and was about
to google like snape an HBO show, and his name
popped up before I could even type anything, And then
I forgot that We're all lugged into the same Google account,
so you probably just looked it up and then I'm
seeing what I'm seeing your Google history. So yep, that's

(15:25):
that's pretty funny. That's it.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
And yeah, you know it's not funny though, and very serious.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Serious black.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Yeah, and.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
Snakes.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Snakes are very serious, very serious. Well, speaking of snakes,

(16:07):
now that you mentioned snakes, let's talk about snakes. So
in the past, we have done at the like we
like to do, like throwing the little mini series here
and there. One thing that we did was our favorite
books that had a train on a cover, and we
or it wasn't even our favorite books. We just talked
about all of the editions of Sorcerers or Philosopher's Stone

(16:30):
that had a train on the cover, and we talked
about like what we liked about them whatever. For this
main segment, we wanted to talk about something having to
do with book two, and what we thought would be
fun would for each of us to pick our favorite
Chamber of Secrets that features a snake on the cover.

(16:51):
And what's funny is we were going back and forth
with this idea because we were like, there are so
many books that feature spoiler alerts, like on the cover
book when we were talking about this with Arun when
he was on with us a few episodes ago. If
you don't know who Arun is, he is the translator
for the Yiddish Harry Potter books. But we were talking about, like,

(17:12):
how funny it is that some of these covers feature spoilers,
and one of the biggest spoilers the fact that they've
got a snake on the cover of these books. It's
crazy so of all the creatures, right, So we all
picked our favorite edition of Chamber of Secrets that features

(17:35):
a basilisk. Eric, would you like to go first and
explain what your favorite is?

Speaker 1 (17:43):
Sure? So I went back and forth. I really like
the snake on the German books because I like that
art style and it's very kind of like blockie. It
reminds me of the Pokemon poory Gan. Yes, yes, but
I didn't go with that one. But that's my honorable mention.
I really really like I like the snakes on the

(18:05):
well and like all the snakes in the Chamber of
Secrets is on the cover of the German one. But
I went with the Brian Selznick covers, and specifically because
two things. One, it's on the Chamber of Secrets book
and his art style is just outstanding. It's all black
and white, there's really no color at all, just shaded

(18:27):
pencil drawings. And there's a big body of the snake
on the Chamber of Secrets cover, but you can't really
tell in isolation that like that is a snake, Like
you can kind of maybe put it together, but it's
not the focal point of the cover. There's just this
big body of a snake and like one portion of

(18:48):
the cover. But what does it for me is in
these Brian seals Nick books, if you put all of
the books together in a big line cover side up,
all the cover are is cohesive. It all goes together,
and you start to notice that there is a part
of a snake on every book one through seven, and
it culminates with book seven having the head of the

(19:11):
snake as a very prominent part of the Deathly Hella's cover,
which is so cool and so really every book in
that series one through seven has part of the snake
on it, and it's actually you know, it's not the
basilisk itself. It's more it's likely it's the Gini because
she plays a pivotal role in book seven but it's

(19:35):
it's cool because if you've read Chamber of Secrets, you
can look at the cover of the Brian Sells Nick
book and say, oh, that's a snake. But if you haven't,
necessarily and you're just looking at it in isolation, it's
not going to give away that there's a snake as
the main not the main antagonist, but a big portion

(19:55):
of the danger in that book. And especially even if
you put it all the together in books one through
seven and look at them all in you know, one big, one,
big picture, you don't necessarily think that that snake is
exclusive to Chamber of Secrets, which is again really great
because it doesn't spoil anything or Chamber of Secrets. So

(20:16):
it's kind of like, if you've read it, horay, if
you haven't, it's still horay. It's cool. So that's when
I went with that one over the German book, just
because it doesn't have any major spoilers yet the snake
is such an integral part of not only the cover
of book two, but throughout the series, and I just like,

(20:37):
I love that. And plus, I mean, without saying more
times that that Brian Seles neck art is just so
good and it's it's so it's it's.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
My favorite parlar his art and I've said it like
a thousand times, his art for all seven books. It's
probably my favorite cohesive set that and obviously SLI twenty
fifth Aniversary is like my favorite, but Brian Selznick in
particular is my absolute favorite cohesive set because of his

(21:07):
original concept and for his unique interpretation using the black
and white art, specifically because he has stated the reason
why he has done that, not just because that's his
style of art, because if you've looked at his other
works that they're very similar, but because drawing and illustrating

(21:29):
and black and white leaves so much more to the
imagination because you have to imagine the colors, whereas all
of these other cover arts have the colors already put
right out there for you. And that's I just think
the most genius interpretation. I like what you were saying
with the snake and just and how vague it is,
Like you could look at the entire image obviously, and

(21:50):
you can follow the snake, and then like by the
time you get to book seven, you're like, oh, it's
n Ghini, that makes sense, But when you see it
for book one, you're like maybe it's a dry again
because we have Norbert in it. And then in book two,
like obviously at the end it's we note that. Okay,
maybe it's for the Massilisk. Book three, maybe it's a

(22:13):
little like it's a magical creature because we start taking
care of magical creatures, like book four, maybe it's another dragon.
Book five, maybe it's Nighini, you know, things like that.
It just leaves such an element of mystery. Also, like
Harry's a parcel tongu, there's such a big connection to
snakes throughout the entire series, which is what he's illustrating

(22:35):
for us. He's amazing. I love Brian seals Nik.

Speaker 1 (22:38):
Yeah, oh love it. And might I add if you
can find this series in any of the hardcover versions
with the foil on them, just outstanding Bella Russian has that.
I think regular Russian has that. Two. I don't know
why I said regular Russian. Russian has it too.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Regular.

Speaker 1 (23:01):
I think there's another. Does Italian have that covered two?

Speaker 2 (23:06):
Hebrew? Oh, I don't know if the Hebrew Hebrew.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
I think it's paperback with the foiling. Yeah, I don't know.
I don't know for sure, but anyway, it doesn't doesn't matter,
like the art is still outstanding. The foil doesn't make
or break needing this set. So that's my that's my
pick for snake art.

Speaker 2 (23:25):
You know what's interesting. And I'm just going to say
it's super quiet before we move.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
On to this episode's title snake Art.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
So we just experienced a little bit of technical difficulty.
Carly just had a power outage, so she's not going
to be able to share her favorite snake book.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
But she just just separated away. She's gone.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
She hopped into her fireplace and flew away, so she
might record like a bonus episode. So if you support
us on Patreon and our discord member, you can have
access to our bonus content like that. So Carly's gonna,
i think, record a bonus episode about her favorite book

(24:15):
with snake cover. So I'm gonna just go into my
favorite one, which is a pretty unique choice. And Eric
doesn't have this book. It's Harry Potter and the Chamber
of Secrets. It's a Spanish edition, book Club edition, so

(24:39):
it's this guy Eric there it is.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
I've seen it multiple times. It's a good one.

Speaker 2 (24:45):
I think what I love about this one so much,
it's the book that always stands out to me When
I think Basilisk, I'm like, this book just pops into
my brain because the Spanish book club editions are notorious
for having just very bold images.

Speaker 1 (25:03):
And it's very like so it's there's no like blending
of colors. It's like the blue stops and the green starts, right,
there's no very even like what's the word with that,
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
It just contrast. I don't know. It's not smooth shading.
It's just very contrasted, even like on the Basilisk's belly,
like one scale is light green, then it's darker green,
then it's this dark green. But what is so great
about this book is it's so obvious, like it describes

(25:37):
the whole chamber of secret scene on the on the
book it's Harry with the sword of Gryffindor fighting the Basilisk,
so you know that that's you know that the secret
beast is a giant snake. And even the back cover
has Fox on it, so it's like Fox coming to
the rescue the see.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
I wish I had that so I could look at
the back and read the little sup like plot synapsis
synopsis because I want to know if it says can
you mirror image it? Yeah, I can read it. I
just want to know if it says like this is

(26:19):
like dead air time as I'm reading this sorry when yeah,
like it doesn't actually give away like what the villain is,
but it's like it's right on the cover.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
It's literally big bold right there.

Speaker 1 (26:36):
You know it's a snake.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
It's the opposite of what Brian Sells thinks is basically
it's big bold color instead of black and white, and
it is clearly a giant, scary snake.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
What I really like about the Mary grand Prey art,
which is the American art which most of our listeners
are probably very familiar with. If that's the one you
grew up reading. Like me, the cover of that book
didn't really make sense to me until I read the book.
You're like, there's Harry and he's holding onto fox's tail,

(27:10):
but I don't know who foxes. It's like he's holding
a bird, and like it looks like he's in a dungeon.
And then there's like a little black kind of cave
type thing with like some eyes just peeking out, and
you're like, ah, what is that? That doesn't look good?
And then like the whole you know, enticing little blurb

(27:30):
on the inside flap is like there's something mysterious happening
at Hogwarts, and you know kids, you know, kids are
getting I don't know if it says petrified, but like
you know, it's hurting students, and you're like, I bet
it's that those eyes in that that thing, but you
don't know what it is, and you don't know where
it is, and it's like the perfect like tease, like, oh,

(27:53):
something's up to note what is that? I want to
read this book and find out versus this one. It's
like I suppose you could look at it and go,
oh oh wow, here he's sword fighting a snake. That's
pretty cool. Yeah, I want to check that out. But
then as soon as you get in the book and
they're like something's attacking the students but we don't know,
you're like, I bet snake.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
Yeah, yeah, it's pretty funny that way. I mean there,
I just googled like Chamber of Secrets around the world,
and there are definitely a lot of snake covers. Yeah,
there are definitely a lot of books that do a
much better job. But like being mysterious, I would say

(28:32):
Swedish is a phenomenal interpretation of Chamber of Secrets.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
Fantastic. I pulled that one out today and looked at it,
and I was like, this is great, and the finish
one is pretty good too, because it has nothing to
do with any danger. It's like, hey Lockhart.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Oh right, right right. I mean there's also so many
Chamber of Secrets that feature the blue Ford Anglia.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
But yeah, that's like classic, that's like classic number two.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
But there's the Danish edition has a giant cobra on
the front, and I'm looking at the Johnny Duddle, which
is beautifully done but clearly a gigantic, terrifying snake trying
to attack a phoenix.

Speaker 1 (29:12):
Like right, well, we talked about that with the room,
because that's the Johnny Devil. Johnny Duddle is the art
that the the Yiddish books use.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
What's the Oh no, never mind. I was gonna say,
what's the Kazukibuwishi? But I remember that it's the blue
Ford Anglia. It's because I remember, like we I had
done a Q and A with him and he was
talking about alternative cover artwork, and one of the things
he mentioned was like, do I go with the blue
Ford Anglia or do I go with the Phoenix? And specifically,

(29:39):
I think why he didn't like do the Phoenix is
because it like alluded to too much, especially because the
blue Ford Anglia is so iconic Harry Potter. And also
it's such uh you know, it happened so early on
in the book, so it definitely can't like really spoil anything.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
No, but still a very enticing cover. If you hadn't
read it, You're like, what car?

Speaker 2 (30:05):
That's cool?

Speaker 1 (30:05):
Oh, that's exciting.

Speaker 2 (30:07):
I love a good flying car.

Speaker 1 (30:08):
It'd be better if the car was flying like right
into the Basilisk's head, I mean, Eric, like in its jaws.

Speaker 2 (30:20):
I mean, i'd be pretty sweet. Oh. Now I'm looking
at the signature edition. Even the signature edition has like
this crazy looking snake on the front. Uh you know,
there's just there's a lot of a lot of snake books. Yeah.
I definitely I go back to this, this Spanish Book
Club edition anytime because it's being it's so bold, it
just stands out in my brain. Eric, this isn't I'm

(30:46):
doing it again where I'm going to talk about recording
the podcast while we're on the podcast, and it's just
things happening live. This is a very like real reel
with you how we do it.

Speaker 1 (30:56):
Kind of episode, so real, so real.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
Do we want to keep our translation of the show
what it is? Considering I'm the only one, but you
don't have the book. That's boring. But you're the one
that's supposed to be doing it. You're supposed to be
leading the translation of the show, and you don't even
have the book. Okay, for our translation to the show today, Eric,

(31:50):
take it away.

Speaker 1 (31:52):
Well, Melanie, our translation of the show is the Spanish
book Club Chamber of Secrets, which Eric, I don't have.
Melanie and Carly have it. This is a like just
really quick on those Spanish book club ones were talking
before the show started. It's only books one through five.

(32:15):
They're not expensive to get, at least they weren't when
I bought my first I have the first book in
that book club edition. So it's something I might want
to get in the future, honestly, but I'm in no
hurry too, and if I don't, I won't be disappointed.
But they are really cool and so it might be
something that I want to get down the line. So

(32:36):
really quick background on this book. It's in Spanish, but
it is in Castilian Spanish because it is in Spain.
The translator is Adolfo Munos. And oh, there's two people,
Adolpho Munos and Niebas Martine Assoulfra. That's a fun name.
That's really cool. Didn't realize there were two people.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Fun fact. You learn something new every day.

Speaker 1 (33:03):
But is that the translator for the regular Spanish book.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
I don't know. I could look it up super quick
while you continue.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
Doesn't sound like it is, but maybe it is now
I'm questioning that any who's But the publisher is Circo Lectores,
which is I think they published lots of book club editions,
but this book. Like Carly wrote that she got hers
on eBay, I got mine on eBay or a books

(33:34):
or book depository, one of those online used book sites.
And it was really easy to get and I did
not pay very much for it, even including shipping.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
I got mine from like a Spanish like second hand
kind of website. I think it kind of like in
I would compare it to like a mercary, but a
Spanish mercury site where you just put in offers on
books and people sell them to you. To go back
to the translator question. The first one that you mentioned,

(34:09):
Alicia did book one, and then the other one that
you mentioned did books two through four, and then book
five through Book two through four was also done by
another translator as well, and then five, six and seven

(34:30):
or another translator.

Speaker 1 (34:33):
Yeah, that there are translator back. It's it's Spanish books
are a.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
Hot, hot mess. Spanish books are a hot mess. It
is just like.

Speaker 1 (34:46):
More and so confusing coming coming out that we're like, oh,
this one existed all a lot and it's slightly different
than the rest of them.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
Bad.

Speaker 1 (34:56):
Let's all open this book and go through the top scale.
So all of us, by all of us, I mean
just Melanie is going to open this book and smell it,
and I am going to watch.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
Oh god, this book is an absolute, straight up trull.
The more I smell the spine smells so dusty and awful.

Speaker 1 (35:21):
Grab my book one because at the same time.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Oh god, mm hmm, I'm gonna smell my.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
My book one's terrible too. Oh god, It's.

Speaker 2 (35:35):
Like it's like attic dust and your tent that was
in your garage for wa too long.

Speaker 1 (35:43):
Oh my god.

Speaker 2 (35:45):
These are awful, all of them are.

Speaker 1 (35:47):
They're awful.

Speaker 2 (35:48):
Awful.

Speaker 1 (35:50):
They're awful.

Speaker 2 (35:52):
Oh my god, those are some of the worst smelling
books I think have ever smelled. And then anytime I
say that, I'm like, wait, let me go get Bengaly
and see how bad it really is, because that's my
least favorite. I'll do that afterward because Bengali stinks. But
oh my god, that's terrible. That is absolutely troll. Uh

(36:13):
do you want me to just I could just tots
it really quick. Do you want me to just tots
it up here?

Speaker 1 (36:17):
Just tally quick. You don't need me to introduce the thing.
You can just go and then I'll check.

Speaker 2 (36:20):
Okay, no problem. Size and proportion in this book, I
would absolutely give an outstanding. I love when a book
has like a little unique quirk to it. And I
love that this book is like slightly too tall to
make it like a nice square book. Like when you
look at it, you're like, oh, this book is like
about an inch taller than it should be, you know,

(36:42):
for it to be like a standard looking book. But
I love that. I love when I love when books
a little quirky like that, So size and proportions outstanding,
How the book feels in your hand. It's a matte texture.
I I like it, but I would just give it
an acceptable It's nothing like to write home about for

(37:03):
a book club edition. The paper is actually like relatively thick,
so I feel like it feels nice when you like
flip through it. However, I don't recommend doing that because
it stinks really bad. So yeah, how it feels the
book definitely an acceptable quality of the book I would
give also, I guess an acceptable for a book club

(37:26):
it's actually like decent. You know, US book club editions.
We talk about these like a lot. The paper is
super thin in a US book club. There isn't like
a lot of attention to detail in a US book club.
And yeah, the Eric showing me his pages, the page
is yellow pretty easily my order of the Phoenix. The

(37:46):
pages are like almost moldy, Like look at this.

Speaker 1 (37:51):
Yeah, it's so bad. I would say that has to
do has a big role to play in the smell.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
I would say, yeah, I would say so. I definitely
say so, you know what, I'm gonna move the quality
down to poor just because that smell should not be
a thing. That is. It is god awful. It's cover art.

Speaker 1 (38:12):
If you had a brand new one, if you had
a brand new one. The quality might be like, hey,
that's all right, but like over time, it's just unfortunately
we got to see the end result and not the yeah,
you know, hot off the press.

Speaker 2 (38:25):
I agree cover art in taper in tapeerts is what
I was about to say in tape Paturtion and tape
RETTIONI my interpret.

Speaker 1 (38:36):
Was like the sweetest chef from the Muppets of the.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
Oh my god, Nora's getting so into Muppets now because
Bennett's song is the Rainbow Connection, which was like kind
of like our gateway into the Muppets, because now she's
into Kermit, She's into Miss Piggy. We were digging Gonzo like,
you know, it's kind of nice. I like that she's
like into like old school Muppets.

Speaker 1 (39:00):
She watched Muppet Treasure Island. I don't I have the
greatest Muppet movie, if not one of the greatest movies
ever made.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
I should I should? I should get her into like
watching the Muppet movies. I don't know, it's hard. She's
like she wants to just rewatch the same movies over
and over again. She's like an effort. Girly.

Speaker 1 (39:18):
You know you've seen Muppet Treasure Island.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
Probably when I was like little. I don't know, I
don't remember.

Speaker 1 (39:26):
It is one of the It is one of the
funniest memories that it exists in the world. It is
so witty and it is so clever. As a grown
up watching it, it's so it's just it's perfect. It's
so good. It's one of those ideal it's funny for
kids and it's funny for adults.

Speaker 2 (39:43):
Oh, I'll watch it. Sounds good to me. Maybe we'll
give that a try over the next however, many days
we'll go to try. I'll try to throw it on. Okay,
cover art and interpretation of the cover art, I would
give a like seeds expectations. I was gonna say outstanding,
but I'm gonna say seeds expectations just because of the

(40:06):
spoiler factor. However, I I like, I love it. I
love the bold imagery on it. Definitely like from book
to book in the series with the book club editions,
I love that they all kind of like hold true
to having just like one really bold image on the cover.

(40:27):
It's literally just Harry sword snake and the low.

Speaker 1 (40:32):
It wraps around. Isn't it a wrap around image?

Speaker 2 (40:34):
To the back, not really. I mean it, this is
a really wrap around cape, but cape goes on the
back too a little bit, a little bit, and the
back is really just this brick pattern.

Speaker 1 (40:46):
And you have Fox on the back, the very pointy
beak so pointsy.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
Oh my gosh, what does she think she's gonna do
with that beak? Blind to basilis well, that would make the.

Speaker 1 (41:01):
Additional spoiler, like Fox was like puncturing the eyes.

Speaker 2 (41:05):
Like one of the eyes was like bleeding a little bit.

Speaker 1 (41:08):
Bleeding out, and Harry's stabbing it in the mouth and
Ginny's like laying there on the floor.

Speaker 2 (41:15):
You know, you could be the one that draws the
next cover art and that could be the concept right there.

Speaker 1 (41:22):
It'd be like that'd be like the Deathly Hell. It's
it's like the equivalent of the Deathly Hello's cover art
being like Harry like dueling with Boldemort at the end,
and Baltimore is like exploding, like ye find out what
happens in book seven.

Speaker 2 (41:37):
Yeah, but that doesn't happen in the book. In the book,
he like dies like a mortal man. That's what makes
the book so much better than the movie, because.

Speaker 1 (41:44):
Right, because of the because but like you know the spell.
You know they go together, you know he yeah, tries
to get Harry and then it rebounds on him and
then it hits him and he dies, So like it
could be like the flash of the Evadica. Howeverckers and
it's like Voldemort's just laying there on the ground. What happens?

Speaker 2 (42:02):
M Yeah, I'm picking up with you're button down picking
it up.

Speaker 1 (42:08):
Not like in the movie where he turns to like
ash and blows all.

Speaker 2 (42:11):
Over, blows away in the wind and everyone's like inhaled the.

Speaker 1 (42:15):
Bit of that and they're like Voldemort Ash gross dark Lord,
my thoats.

Speaker 2 (42:24):
My X factor. I would say, is I just like
that it's unique cover art, you know, I feel like
our book club editions use Mary Grand Prix cover art.
Anytime I think of like these, I also think of
that German book Club edition, Like I just think it's
really cool when book club editions have their own unique

(42:44):
art and are treated a little bit special, Like I
just think that that's pretty pretty makes.

Speaker 1 (42:49):
The more collectible for people like us, like the I
have zero interest in owning book Club American books.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
They're just I just set them because I think it's
like a common conversation starter, Like I just think it's
funny to get at that.

Speaker 1 (43:03):
I would maybe get one, but I'm not like actively
seeking one out. But like what happened to you when
you went to a bookstore. I used bookstore and there
was one sitting there, Like I might pick it up
if I don't have it, but yeah, it's not something
I need to collect because it's not like it's not
cooler in a different way, Like it's the same book,
it's just not as detailed as the trade books, which

(43:28):
there's something to that, but like it's nothing like these
where they look completely completely different.

Speaker 2 (43:37):
So I think that's it for that, right, Yeah, that's
that's the that's the Spanish book Club Chamber of Secrets there.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
It is way book, snake book, snake art. That's still
the episode title. Snark Snark, snark, snart, snart.

Speaker 2 (44:00):
It's the smart.

Speaker 1 (44:02):
I'll just start using that as like an offhand term,
like people know what it means. Oh, yeah, how's your
how's the snart? Oh you mean snake art. Yeah, that's
what we call it. That's what we call it these days.

Speaker 2 (44:12):
Love your love your new snart tattoo come to my
basement or.

Speaker 1 (44:18):
To show you some Snart in my bookshelves, people would
just leave. Yeah maybe now all right, Well, since I

(44:46):
said Snart way too many times, that's all the time
we have for this episode of Dialogue Ali. So we're
in season five, episode eleven. If you want to talk
to us more about Snart or other things, you can
do so in many ways. We're all on Instagram. Carly's
at All the Pretty Books, I'm at Noctor and Eric
and Melanie's at Harry Potter Collection, Peter, who's not here

(45:07):
today but is here often, is at the Potter Collector,
and of course our podcast is at Dialogue Ellie Podcast.
There's some great websites to check out, including on our
website Dialogue eli dot com. Our new flow chart that
has been you haven't tried that out, try it out again.
We're still kind of I guess beta testing is maybe

(45:28):
the word, but we think it works really well. So
if you have a US Harry Potter book and you
want to know what it is and if it's valuable,
you can go to our website either on your computer
or on your phone or tablet or whatever and check
if your book is valuable, and hopefully you get some
more information about it, which I've heard good things from
people that have tried it.

Speaker 2 (45:48):
Yeah, I mean too, it's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (45:50):
Yeah, give it, give it a try, even if you
already know it just really helps if you try it out,
let us know if it worked or not, which is
good because we worked hard on.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
Oh oh my god, we worked so hard on that.
We worked so hard on that, and we only did
the US books. We really want to tackle UK books
as well, but it was a lot of work doing
the US books. I think now that we have like
a bit of a flow when it comes to you know,

(46:23):
how we did it, in the process and whatever. We
kind of know what we're doing, so it might might
make doing the UK books a bit easier. However, in
the same breath, there are so many UK bodles. Yeah,
I mean not for nothing, Eric, I feel like we
could just do like a general tab of like all
of the different editions that like are not valuable, and
just have like one tab that it's like if you

(46:44):
have this book, meaning like the modern ones, the Johnny Dottles,
the modern hardcover, modern paperbacks, the the I don't know
whatever other editions there are. There are so many signature editions,
like if you have any of these, they are not valuable.
But if you have a deluxe edition, it brings you
to like the delts, you.

Speaker 1 (47:04):
Know, write or like the classic like if you have
a Goblet of Fire or to the Phoenix. Hafloot prints
deathly Hello's Day one first printing not valuable, just like
or get. You get a little murkier with the UK
books because so many different print numbers, like early print
numbers still sell for money, like a fourth printing of

(47:29):
Philosopher's Stone is still pretty valuable, and a tenth printing
is still you know, still has value, whereas US books,
tenth printing of anything has no value at all. Right,
So that's that's where it gets a little murky. It's
it's a little harder to tell definitively is it valuable
or is it just worth twenty dollars which is still something,

(47:50):
but it's not just like a yes it is, no,
it's not. There's there's a little more great area. So yeah,
we'll get to work on that at some point. But yeah,
So that's at our website, dialogue la dot com. You
can find this podcast anywhere you can stream things. And
I will again just put another shout out if you
listen to it somewhere that lets you leave a review.

(48:12):
Please leave us a review. That would really help our
show get noticed by other people that are looking for
more Harry Potter content out there, because there is a
lot and some people are consumed at all and are
looking for that next next thing to listen to, and
that could be us, Melanie, that could be us, you
never know, it could be our show, you never know.

(48:34):
I do also want to take a moment to well,
I should mention that we are on Patreon, So if
you want to support us a little bit more, you
can go to patreon dot com slash dialogue. Ally little
is three dollars a month. You can support our podcast
and keep us afloat doing what we're doing, which is
really really helpful and we are just so sincere for
our patreons. We say this all the time. One of

(48:56):
the biggest perks is that you get access to our Discord,
which is just a great community of book collectors in general,
and they are just awesome people. And like I said,
Rob and our Discord knew that I was looking for
this book and he had one, he was selling one,
and he reached out to me and said, hey, I'm
selling this book. I know you want it, you want

(49:17):
to buy it, and I said yes. It was that easy.
It was so cool, so just really really awesome people,
And I just want to thank each and every one
of you for supporting us, because we do this so
that you can listen to it. So with all that
being said, it is now time to walk back through
