Speaker 1 (00:00):
Three, up, two across, tap that play button three times,
and walk through the archway into Dialogue Alley. Hello, and
(00:23):
welcome to Dialogue Ali, the Official Potter Collector podcast about
Harry Potter books, book translations, and all other things magical.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I'm Melanie, I'm Carly, and I'm Eric.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Hi. Everyone.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
The three of us are Harry Potter book translation collectors,
and we collect Harry Potter books from all over the world,
and today we're going to talk about some of those books.
I feel like this is our first like big beefy
like talk about book episode in a while. We've been
like kind of flushing the format for like the last
(00:58):
few episodes and it's been a bit more cash. So
this episode we're bringing it back to our roots and
doing a big book talk. This is season five, episode twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
It's gonna be.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Our last episode for a bit. Typically, like towards the
end of the summer, we take like a bit of
a break, have some family time, refresh before our next season.
We always start our season September first, because Harry Potter
things it makes sense.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
So I don't know, this will probably be our last
episode of.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
The season, right or yeah, I think so.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Maybe, Like one more like secret squeaker in there. Who knows, maybe.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
The surprise squeaker, just like squeak it in. I was like,
speak it in there, squeak it in.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
That's what I'm meant. Yeah, uh, like I said, So
for this episode, we're going to be talking about book
stuff in particular, we're gonna be talking about our favorite spines,
our favorite book spines in our collections, which is pretty
cool because the ones that we picked, I feel like
(02:19):
are pretty not what I was expecting them to be,
but I feel like they're pretty good.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
I was gonna say it's pretty rad, and then you
went a different direction.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Cool, bro, I was gonna say snazzy.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Oh all right, I mean it's pretty they're pretty squeaking.
These are these are squeakers. These these spines are squeakers.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Oh my god.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Right before we started recording this episode, I was telling
Eric and Carly how I had like the most I
would call it like mildly inconvenient day, Like it was
like everything was going wrong, but it was just like
the tiniest little inconvenience things that were making my day
go wrong, Like, uh, I didn't make an appointment for
my daughter for blood work so I had to wait
(03:03):
forty five minutes and then they still didn't take me.
Or I was running out of gas and there was traffic,
and then the gas pumps wouldn't work, and then my
computer started freezing. It was just things that were like
just annoying enough to just really get it under my skin.
So it's that kind of day. And now you guys
are making fun of me because I said, squeaker, not
making fun.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
I'm just introduction.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
We're laughing.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
Yes, I'm enjoying the introduction of a new term into
the Harry Potter translation collecting lexicon.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Yeah, amazing, I love that.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Love podcasting lexicon.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Squeaky, Oh, squeaky, squeaking.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Squeaky, squeaky, squeak, squeak, squeaky.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
We sound like Kramp from The Emperor's New Grief, which
is an underrated movie anyway.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Boom Baby, totally agree with you.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Oh I got so good, so so good. Oh what
a good one.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
What else is good is a little bit of news?
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Ooh that was excellent.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
Thanks.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Okay, So it looks like, well not even looks like
I've been watching on Instagram. HBO has been showing that
they've started filming the HBO series. How cool is that
they have a delightful little picture of their Harry, who
looks like how so I saw the movies first, if
you heard my how I came to Harry Potter story.
(04:46):
But if I can imagine Harry separate from Daniel Radcliffe,
I think it's a very spot on image. I'm very
excited for where this may be going. I can't wait
to see what they do. The show's like really gonna
be here. Like, honestly, for a little bit, I was
worried that they were like just doing all talk and
(05:07):
drumming up a lot of publicity for something that really
wasn't gonna come to light or whatever. But no, they've
really done it. They're doing it now. And they had
they had an uh oh, and I was gonna say,
they also had a picture of I forget who's playing
their Hagrid, but they had Hagrid all done up in
Hagrid costume and he looked really good. I can't wait.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
I thought he looked, say, all the images that I've
seen of the people look really good. And about the
Golden Trio, my reaction like, I don't know what these
kids have done acting wise beforehand and we didn't really
know much about, like you know, the original Harry Ron
Remione casting in the movies. But I think it's just
(05:55):
because we've seen like the Daniel Radcliffe crew grow into
being adults that when I saw the casting for Harry
Ron and Hermione for the HBO show, they look so
young and like I always forget that in the first
Harry Potter book, these kids are like eleven years old.
(06:16):
Those are not big kids. They're eleven years old. They're
the same age as kids that I teach at the
elementary school that I work at, So like they're little kids,
they're not like adults. And I think that sometimes because
you've made it all the way through the series, you
typically on a reread or a rewatch, you like, I
don't know, like attribute more grown up qualities or more
(06:41):
mature qualities to the kids, and it's hard to remember
that they are still just little kids out of school.
So that was my initial reaction when I just saw
the casting for those three parts, is that it really
they look like little kids, and those those kids just
look great. I'm excited to see what they they what
they do. Hopefully they don't stink. I don't think they'll stink.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
No, they look they look adorable.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
The girl that they cast for Hermione is literally picture usque,
exactly how I pictured Hermione to look. Everything about her
is exactly when I read the books for the first time,
That's exactly how I pictured Hermione. So I'm really excited
about her. I feel like, in particular, I don't know,
I feel like it's going to be so hard to
(07:27):
separate the movies from this show and not like treat
them like as separate entities. I have a really hard
time picturing anyone other than Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid. Uh.
And that's I feel like because jk Rowling like hand
picked Robbie Coltrane to be Hagrid because he is who
(07:48):
she pictured, and like even Jim Dale reading Hagrid's voice
sounds like Robbie Coltrane to me, Like, yeah, I feel like,
I feel like Robbie Coltrane is Hagrid. Like so finding
I feel like the other characters like aren't as type
casted to me as Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid. So he's
(08:10):
the one in particular that I'm just a little bit
iffy about. Other than that, Like, I'm excited to kind
of see there how they're going to handle things. I'm
excited to see if it like how true to book
it really is going to be considering that's how they've
been planning everything as being true to book. And I
know we talk about the series kind of we've talked
(08:31):
about the HBO series before in the past, but like
this was our first look as seeing like the kids
that they cast in costume and as these characters, seeing
the little boy I don't remember his name that they
cast as Harry, as Harry with green eyes and his
messy black hair, and like he looked he looked great.
(08:52):
He looked like a great Harry. So yeah, I'm excited
to see like where they were they end up going
with everything.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Same same, So I'm real excited. I feel like there's
a little bit of that same anticipation that we first
had with the books when they were coming out, Like
are the movies I guess because we've already read the books,
but like getting to see these things brought to life again,
so and getting to hopefully see moments that we didn't
(09:22):
get to see in the first you know, rendering of it.
So I'm excited I'm real excited here. So that is
being done.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
I think the easiest, Like we worry about separating them
from the movies the show, I mean, and once you
watch it and the music is not the music, Wow.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
I feel like I didn't even think that.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
That's that's going to be a game changer, like that
will make it so easy. Like honestly, my daughter and
I were playing Lego Harry Potter the past couple of
months for the for the switch the It's an old game,
but it's ian. We were playing it and it's just
the movie music is in the in the game because
the game is based on the movies, so you know,
(10:08):
it's it really kind of puts me in the movie
mindset when I'm playing that game, like, oh, here's the
you know, quidditch pitch from the movie and you and
it's all the music that made that happen. If they
had used different music in that Lego Harry Potter game,
I don't think I would have made that connection because
it's Lego people, right, So I think that music change
for the show is going to just totally make the
(10:29):
tone completely you know, separate. It's going to be so
easy to separate it.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Yeah, I agree with that one hundred percent because music
and the sound effects and the visuals like how Mina
Lima aren't a part of the project now. So I
think the visuals, all of these different cues, I think
are going to be very helpful and helping us separate
the TV show from the movies and being able for
(10:55):
us to be more open minded. And you know, yes,
it'll be different, you know, but hopefully different good. I
have a tendency, we all have a tendency to like
the things that we were introduced to first the best,
and that's nostalgia and all of that kind of stuff,
and that's fine. But you know what is cool is
(11:18):
that there are people that this could be the first
way that they meet Harry Potter entirely, like before the books,
before the movies, this could be it too, So that's neat.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
I think my final thought on it is going to
be the fact that like, yes, we had brand new
kids playing the original like Trio and whatnot for the
Harry Potter movies, and that kind of put like a
fresh It gave us like a fresh palette when being
exposed to the movies. But also, what's going to be
hard going from the movies to the show is the
(11:53):
fact that it almost feels like they already used the
best version of in the movie versus now we're going
to the show, and it's like it's you know, like
you know how.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
They say like.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
On TikTok, It's like, oh, here's like the picturesque mom
and then there's the Walmart version. Like I almost feel
like this is just gonna be a lesser version and
not by any fault of its own. It's just like,
like you were saying about the soundtrack, like how how
are you supposed to top John Williams. John Williams did
(12:30):
the original soundtrack for the Harry Potter movies, and he's
known for doing these nastuf like these iconic themes and
the character themes and like you see this character and
you can hear their theme in your head, and like,
you can't top John Williams. He is one of the
best movie composers of all time. So and I know
(12:53):
that this is gonna be a show, So you're not
gonna have like a show, You're not gonna have that.
I feel like it's almost like, oh, all of these
bests have already been used, so now it's like okay,
and now we're just doing what's next. Go ahead, Eric,
Eric's raising his hand and then Carl is raising her hand.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
My counter argument to that would be all the Batman movies,
like the Michael Keaton Batman directed by Tim Burton. We're
gonna skip the Batman Forever and bet Robin, but the
Christian Bale trilogy and then the newest one with Robard Pattinson, Like,
(13:35):
they're all great, and the music's all great, and they're
all different. There's a different visual style, there's a different
even with the exact same character Batman, and it's pretty established.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
I'm not saying that it's not gonna be great, but
I'm saying, like you have John, it's just in a pedestal.
You had John Williams do the original music, but.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
You got Danny, you got Danny Elfman and Burton doing
stuff in the the Michael Keaton to Batman movies. But
you'd think, how can you top that? Tim Burton and
Danny Elfman, like, that's that's amazing. And then the Dark
Knight trilogy comes out and you're like, wow, that was
incredible and the music and that is awesome, and it's
it's not Danny Elfman music, and it doesn't have to be.
(14:20):
It's it's different and it's still just as good. I
think it's gonna work. I really think it'll be.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
And I think their deal is they're not looking to top,
you know, John Williams.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
No, I know they're looking.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
I know they're looking to be different, and I know
it's meant to be like a different medium.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
But they're looking to add too, So as long as
they're not in competition of and they're looking to add
to the collective that already is. I think it'll be great,
and I think we're gonna get some because I love
the soundtracks to Harry Potter. I don't know many people
who don't. I think we're gonna get some wonderful there.
Eric doesn't count, I can't, I do.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
I like the music.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
I think we're gonna get some wonderful music out of
this that we're gonna enjoy just as much. I think
it'll just be different, and I think it'll be like
TV show style music. It may not be the epic
John Williams style music, but I mean it's gonna be.
It's gonna be different moments. We're gonna get to see
things kind of like the minutia of the books a
(15:21):
little bit more hopefully, so that'll be those that has
different musical requirements. So and I'm really excited to see
what they do with the theme, although I mean it'll
always be the original, Like for me, it'll the Harry
Potter theme will always be the Harry Potter theme.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
The theme for the HBO show is gonna be the
Harry Potter puppet Pealsh viral YouTube video from could.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
You imagine that'd be so funny?
Speaker 5 (15:51):
Harry Potter, Harry, Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
I mean that sounds great, all right.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
I totally watch that shows.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
So much time on news, but it's it's such it's
great news.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
It is big, it's big news. It's big news.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
And we have a merch update.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
I just wanted to refresh everyone's minds in that we
have merch now.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Which is very cool.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
I wear like, I wear a Dialogue Galley T shirt
like at least once a week to work, like at summertime,
so I wear I always wear like teacher te's to work.
So it's like I go back and forth between wearing
like uh my signature T shirt I just got the
signature shirt, which is super nice. It's so soft and
such like a perfect T shirt for summertime too, because
(16:43):
it's like pretty light. So I go back and forth
between wearing that and then I do have like a
buttersoft tea and like the teal which is so nice.
Also the color is beautiful.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Oh I know, and it's they also.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Yeah, I also wanted to wait to give a reviewed
to you guys to let you know how they like washed,
Like I feel like they washed really well. Like the
logo doesn't wear at all after you wash it, which
is really nice. Like it's nice to see that it's
a quality product as well, considering like the last time
we tried to do merch we did it through like
(17:17):
a completely different company and the quality was absolutely horrible.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
So it took us a while to.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Find a company that would do what we wanted and
give us like nice quality products. Eric showed us was
that your hat. Did you get the hat?
Speaker 4 (17:32):
No, it was a teacher I work with who isn't
even like a huge Harry Potter fan. She just thought
the hat was cute and got the hat.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
So the hit you said, it's a little thin, but
it's a white hat that you'd probably wear in the summer.
So yeah, it's fine, but yeah, that's that's embroidered down there, Like.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
It looks so nice.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
Wow, it does look really nice. And I will say
we do have a variety of things on there, and
we have a variety of shirts. So if you're like
I really want like a thin soft shirt, we have that.
If you want like a thick cotton shirt, we have that.
So like, just just pay attention to like the feel
of the shirt because people have different preferences for shirts
(18:19):
and we have the ability easily to put them on there,
so just if if you're looking for something specific, we
have it. And also we're trying to keep the prices
as like affordable as possible, but because this company makes
nicer stuff, it's going to be more than like ten
(18:43):
dollars for a shirt, which the ones we got previous
to this were not that much cheaper than the prices
we have set for these, and the quality.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
Was like terrible. It was like a shirt that likely poor.
It was like the cotton shirts that you would get
from like I don't know, like a department store, and
then with shirt yeah, they were just they were just
not they were really not nice, Like I think that's
like like to wash the logo was like peeling off.
(19:12):
It was terrible. Yeah, so this is nice stuff. Also,
I've been uh, we always keep like my classroom like
very cold. We have like a lot of reasons, but
like we keep my classroom freezing most of the time.
So I'm always wearing my hoodie. And I love that hoodie.
It is so soft. I've already washed it and it
didn't like lose that like super soft ness to it.
(19:36):
Oh perfect, It's so cozy. I am obsessed. I actually
wish I had it right now because I'm a little chilly.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Oh. My daughter wore her hoodie to the Minnesota Orchestra
performing the music to Harry Potter and the Starser's Stone
went Oh my god, so fun, which which again it
does not matter which movie you see. If you can
see any live orchestra in a major city perform the
(20:05):
music with the movie one, do it even if you
don't like the movie. It's so cool and it's really
it's really just a unique thing, like you're seeing an
amazing orchestra play and you just forget, like, am I
watching the movie? Am I supposed to watch the orchestra,
Like what's the point of this, But the point is
(20:27):
it's all awesome. Anyway, she went to that with my
parents for her birthday present, and someone in line to
get in asked her where she got her hoodie. I
was like, oh, that was really nice, like awesome, like
my dad has a podcast. It was really fun.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Nora wore her shirt too, but and it was like
a little bit big on her, but she like still
loved it anyway, Like she loves that T shirt.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
It's it's it's pretty so cute.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
It's just very cute. I love it.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
I want one of the long sleeved teas shirts now
because I love a long sleeve T shirt.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
I know of a long sleeve T shirt in the
fall i'll probably get. I love like the maroon one
is so nice.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Logo just looks it doesn't got the maroon one. He
liked it.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
I love it. It looks so good.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
We have such excellent colored choices. That's what's also really nice,
like all of the shirts, all of this stuff really
has wonderful like color choices.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
Yeah, that's true.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
And I will also mention some of the shirts styles
don't have all the color options. So sometimes like if
you click on one, like I wanted the wild Berry
or whatever they there was like this really like pinkish
purple color. That's amazing. That doesn't come on all the shirts,
so you might have to like click around with the
different styles and logos to get the color that you're
(21:48):
looking for. Which that's just because of what they have.
Shirt templates are available in which style, So yeah, check
it out. That's really cool. And then Carly, I have
one more thing in news. I want to squeak.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
I want to squeak in here, you want to squeak
in It's a squeaker.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
Yep, it's a squeaker. Jersey Jack, which is like the
primary pinball machine manufacturer now since like Williams and Data
East and Valley and gott Libral kind of defunct. Now
jersey Jack they the first big machine that came out
was the Wizard of Oz a while ago and it
(22:23):
was amazing, and since then they've come out with amazing ones.
They have an amazing Beatles one. They now have a
Harry Potter pinball machine and it is themed to the
movie Mina. Lima did exclusive artwork for the side of
the cabinet and for some of the toys on the
inside of the machine. So like, just go to YouTube
and look up Harry Potter pinball or just google Harry
(22:44):
Potter pinball. You will find pictures, you'll find a video.
I haven't seen one out in the wild yet, but
I'm hoping to find one because I cannot afford to
buy one for my house. I already have a pinball machine,
and it was definitely way cheaper than what the Jersey
jack in ball machines stell War, which are like thousands
and thousands of dollars.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Oh, they're very nice. Yeah, I'm looking at images of
it right now.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
Yep. So check that out if you like pinball or
if you like Harry Potter. It's that I mentioned. It's
like themed to the movie. Yes, I did, because I
said me and Alima, so yeah, yeah, there you go pinball. Hooray,
another Harry Potter collaboration that I didn't know you needed
until now.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Hu's a cool I love a good pinball game. You
know what else I love though, the chiropractor for your spine.
Speaker 6 (23:38):
Ooh if you that was good though?
Speaker 3 (24:04):
Was that where you were going with that, Eric?
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Yeah, I was so confused. I was so confused.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
Take it away, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
So for the it's gonna be a bumpy ride. Oh
speakity squeak ems or the main topic for this episode.
We are going to talk about the spine art on
some of our favorite Harry Potter translations. This was an
(24:35):
episode suggested by one of our discord members, or actually
probably not even just one. I think a few people
have mentioned they wanted us to talk about this for
a while. So again that's another perk of being a patron,
supporter and beacon our Discord is you can help suggest
an episode for us to record, which is pretty fun.
(24:56):
But just to go over some basics here in case
you're new. The spine of the book is the part
that you see when it's put on a shelf, like
you'd put a book in the shelf at the library. Typically,
book spines contain the following, but are not limited to,
the name of the book, the name of the author,
(25:17):
sometimes the publisher. Maybe there's a number if it's a series,
but for sure, usually the title of the book and
the name of the author. That can be done in
a very boring simple way. It can be done in
a little snazzier way or in the case of these
six series that we picked, or these six translations that
(25:39):
we picked, it can be done in a way that
is just like eye catching and incredible. So we've each
picked two different translations that we want to talk about,
and we're going to open it up with Carly, and
she has chosen Why not, Carli, explain what you how
(25:59):
you were this set? Because I know it's the Dutch art,
but it's on a different than the Italian books.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
Right right so, and it's actually so the Dutch art
by Ian van Lannon I believe is the name of
the Dutch artist.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
This.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
The Italian publisher Solani use their art, I believe in
twenty seventeen or so for their hardcover books and they
are phenomenal. But the book one spine is one of
my absolute favorite spines of all time. It does not
(26:42):
look as good on camera, it does not look as
good on photos, but it is in person one of
my absolute favorite spines to see when I walk in.
It is the whole reason I bought the whole set.
I have the whole set like all this. All the
Italian spines from the set look great, but this spine
in particular is among my favorite. It is so white.
The red is like a nice it's not apple red,
(27:05):
it's like a light lighter red.
Speaker 4 (27:09):
And it looks how does it contrast to the original
Dutch covers. Oh, you'll see, Like I'm looking at it
right now, and the original Dutch is like, I don't know,
kind of a purple with a little red, and then
there's liked.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
The white is so much more white.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
Yeah, I think the contrast on the Italian one.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
Is just a lot super nice.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
It's a little more popping, and even the back of
the book, like the back of the book is phenomenal.
At some point, we need to just we need to
do an episode where we discuss like the art on
the backs of the books, because that was always.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Like, oh, we're gonna we're gonna get all all the sides.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
But see, like it's just the white here. Like they've
just done such a better job on the Italian book
in my opinion, and it's it's so well bound, Like
everything about this book is perfect. I love this spine
all right.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
Way to go Italy for borrowing Dutch art and improving it.
The next one is one that I picked, and it's
the Chinese Deluxe Edition set. This is simplified Chinese. And
these are the books that are mostly brown and it
looks like there's a scroll on the front and they
(28:38):
go together as a set, but it's not really like
a box set. But the spines of these are very
brown and unassuming. But then the title of the book
is always in a foil that matches the foil on
the front, and I don't know what it is about
these that it's like this just simple spine with like
(29:00):
ight tan and dark tan words for everything else that's
not the title of the book, even like the number
of the series, like I'm holding as Kaban right now
and the number three at the top, just in this
like nonchalant like beige. But then it's got this pop
of color, which is really cool, especially when you see
(29:22):
them all together. It's like you got red, you got gold,
you got green, you got purple, you got blue. And
the fact that they're all in this kind of like
quote unquote boring book but then there's this popin foil
just really does it for me. And it's so different
to anything else on the shelf too, because it's I mean,
(29:42):
one it's in Chinese, so if you didn't know it
was Harry Potter, you wouldn't know it was Harry Potter
from the spine, which is also why they kind of
stand out on my shelf. It's just really cool. I
love the foil and the just when they all are
next to each other. It's such such a cool set.
I don't normally all the books in a set, but
I wanted all of these because they were really cool.
(30:04):
And part of that reason was the spine end scene
and any comments, questions, comments.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
Now, Honestly, when you were talking about that, when it
was making me think about the Hebrew books, which are
not my spine choice, however, like I feel similarly about
like the foiling on those spines, Like they pick very
different color foiling on the Hebrew books in comparison to
the US books when it came to their pairings.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
So for example, like.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
The Chamber of Secrets, foiling for US is gold. I
think a silver gold whatever. I feel, one of those, yeah,
But for Hebrew, I don't know. It's like it's dark.
It's over in this area, like the Forgotten Forest part
of my library right now, so it's hard to see.
But in Hebrew it's like bright blue, like a cobalt blue,
(31:04):
which is it's really it's amazing, which that in contrast
to like the red on Chamber of Secrets, marygrind Praise,
like the phoenix that you can see on the side,
like it looks beautiful. So I like what Eric was saying.
I feel like Eric, I feel like if you had
more Hebrew books, you probably you might have picked them
just because of like the reason.
Speaker 4 (31:26):
I mean, that's very similar to like the Mary Grand
Praix art with the red foiling on the front from
is it Montenegro, I think?
Speaker 1 (31:36):
And then and then like how Portuguese has like the green.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
The green, yeah, yeah, it's so it's it's not like
the typical one that you're you're you're used to seeing.
So I don't know if like part of it is
that it's just different, different and so it stands out more,
or if it actually is a better contrast.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
No, I think it's that I think it's better contrast
colors because you.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
Think it's a contrast like at the blue and it's.
Speaker 1 (32:00):
Yeah, there's I think there's the blue against red. Then
is against the pink. It looks like is like a
teal against the green of goblet of fire. It has
a red foiling against the blue of Order of the Phoenix.
It has like an orange foiling, so it's like opposite
on color wheel stuff purple on green for half bloodprints
(32:22):
and then dark blue on orange for for deathly Hallow.
So it really seems like they picked like contrasting colors
for those, which is really cool. I didn't and that's
not even those aren't even the spines I was planning
on talking about. It's like a bonus bonus favorite spines.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
No the ones I was get in there.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Guys, guys, it's overplayed.
Speaker 4 (32:46):
Now, Okay, no more squeak.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
Let's go move it along.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
So for my my first choice, I actually picked the
twentieth anniversary German. I feel like they had to be mentioned. Yeah,
My favorite thing about the spines is that everyone is so,
as Carl would say, like similarly different. Like they're all
kind of done in a steampunk type style, but each
(33:12):
one is done slightly different from the previous, which is
just beautiful. Like the font is slightly different, the styling
is slightly different, but they all just stand out so
beautifully on the shelves because of how unique they are
in comparison to anything else that I have. I think
the only thing that could be comparable is like the
(33:33):
twentieth Aniversary Slovak. But even that, I feel like is
a more cohesive set, not saying that the twentieth Theniversary
German isn't cohesive. It definitely is cohesive, but but they're
nicely different, which is really cool.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
The German set, Like on the spine, the title, the book,
some of them are horizontal, yeah, kind of like vertically
draw like like you center it in a file, is
like one word, time going. And then the last book
is horizontal like every other book would be or vertical. Sorry, yeah,
(34:09):
you'd have to flip the book on its side to
read it. And they look so great together, but they're
all different. It's seven different people and we're like, here
are your fonts, here are your images, go make a spine,
go and they all came back with something that was different,
but they used the same tools to do it. So yeah,
(34:30):
that's just so cool. We love this sets.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
I love, oh my.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Gosh that And what's fun about it is you can
look just at the spines alone. Every time you look
at it, you'll find something different, and that's always fun.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
I always absolutely love them so much.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Talent. That's a Yacopo Brunos, the illustrator, and so much
talent right there.
Speaker 4 (34:56):
All right, carly On for your next one, what did
you decide on?
Speaker 2 (35:06):
So I almost said, David Selznick. He's a director.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
I know, this is Brian from that starts with the B.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
He's a Bela Russian. They're all of them books one
through four, because that's all that's been published so far,
and I love the Belarussian books anyway. I will support
that publisher anyway that I can, because I think it's
just phenomenal what he's done the hardcover books. The spines
of the hardcover one through four are just really really neat,
(35:39):
and Brian Selznick is the illustrator. It's Brian Selznick art.
He's the one who originally did the twentieth anniversary Harry
Potter books for the US, and of course translations have
ran away with them as well, which is great as
they should. And I love getting to have a wonder
(36:00):
flea made hardcover of the books and the spines are
so nice, and I say, like, I love being able
to like I can look at my bookshelves and I
can just instantly look and be like, oh, those are Belarussian,
not only because they're cyrillic, but also because the spines
themselves are so nice. They have the nice jewel tone
(36:22):
on the spine, like like as you should. They're so
so so nice, and they just they're such nice color
saturation on the spines, like they're not as ornate, nearly
as ornate as the twentieth Anniversary German set, but they
and there's simplicity. They are just as nice in my opinion,
(36:46):
And it is just you know, it has the author's
name at the top of the spine, Harry Potter book title,
then a little dudead the number one because it's a
part of a series, and that's the spine art like,
and then it has some diagonal like black lighter gray
(37:07):
black pattern all the way down the spine. And it
just looks so nice on the shelf. It's almost like
a chevron kind of pattern or half chevron, and it
looks so good on the shelves. It really does. I
can't wait. I'm really hoping for five, three, seven from
bel Russian and I can't wait to buy them.
Speaker 4 (37:28):
My opinion, the best version of the Brian Seals.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
Nick, Yes, I haven't seen the Italian in person but
I've heard that they are also great, but of the
ones that I own personally, they are definitely my favorite
renderings of Brian sales Nick's art.
Speaker 4 (37:46):
All right, all right, so that was Belarussian. I guess
my second pick is, well, it's no surprise that I
love the Swedish books, so I'm picking the Swedish spines
from the original covers of the books from Sweden. And
I'm sure we have talked about the spines whenever we've
done a Swedish book for our translation of the show,
(38:09):
because they're so cool. It's similar to the twentieth Anniversary
German where the spines all are very similar, yet they're different.
There's a little more cohesion in where the like the
title is and the author, and that part's always the same.
It's like a little white strip than all the title
(38:32):
and the author is in like a black strip, but
it's silver foiled, and there's a whole border around that
strip that's silver foiling. And then the background of every
spine is a different dark color depending on which book
it is, so you know, the Philospheor's Stone is the
kind of like the darkish blue. What am I holding
right now? I'm holding Chamber of Secrets. It's like a maroon,
(38:54):
but then there's like really nice purple. There's really nice
like blackish blue and the green. Yeah, they're so cool.
But what really is cool to me and why I
picked it is that there's just these like random, seemingly
random silver foil like flex and specs and lines, almost
(39:16):
like you scraped it with like a paper clip, almost
like scuffed it up a bit. But the scuffs are
all silver foiley things. So I don't know why they
did that, but but they did, and they didn't have to.
But it's it's done there it is, and if you
like continue to the back corner, the flex like turn
(39:38):
into an image that pertains to that particular book, so
it makes a little more sense. But just looking at
it on the spine, it just kind of looks like
flex and specs, and I love it. So I love
this whole set. I bought the whole set. They look
beautiful on the shelf. Again, this is like a if
you don't collect translations, but you love Harry Potter and
(39:59):
you want something Harry Potter that's cool, buy a Swedish
book and put it on your shelf.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
These things are any of them, Honestly, any of them,
any of.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
The seven original covers or all of them. They're so cool.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
And I would say the same with the Finish just
throwing that in there, well.
Speaker 4 (40:19):
I's so glad that you threw that in there, because
Melanie's next pick is Finish.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
Oh my yes, wow, which also comes to no surprise
considering I talk about how much I love the Finish books,
especially the set, all the time. But I mean the
biggest reason why this the spines of these are so
cool is like there are miniature versions of the cover
art on the spines, and I love that. Obsessed with that,
(40:48):
Like there's little like sneak peaks of the cover art
right on the spine, and I feel like you get
that in like different ways on other sets, but not
like this, Like it's actually like the pictures and the
whole set does it, and it's so cool.
Speaker 4 (41:07):
I love that the people are the same size on
all the books, regardless of how thick the book is. Yeah,
so like Book one, there's just like one person on
there because that's all that fits on the spine. But
then when you get to the thicker books, it's like
three or four heads can be jammed on the cover
here because it's a wider book. So it's not like
they just like enlarged Dumbledore's face.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
Pa, they had to make it work.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
Kapoloop Prince is thicker. Yeah, I love it. I agree.
I love that pick.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
They're just so quirky. The finished books make me smile
every time I look at them.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
I mean, that was that was the first set that
I was like, wow, because of this set of books,
I want to collect full sets of unique cover art
and like it so worth it like that. I love
that whole set. I love every single illustration on that
in that set. I just love it. It's such a
good one. But yeah, this fines are simple but.
Speaker 3 (42:03):
So fun. I love them.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (42:06):
I think another book that if you like Harry Potter
but don't collect translations, get a finished book.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (42:12):
Those are really Those are so.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
Like the conversation starters. They're like, this is cool.
Speaker 4 (42:20):
Why of these people have such huge noses naazars right
on their face?
Speaker 3 (42:26):
I know, I mean, I love it. I love this,
I love it. They're so fun.
Speaker 4 (42:31):
Well, so those are six of our favorite spines from
Harry Potter translations. Are there more that are spectacular? Of course?
Speaker 2 (42:38):
Yeah, yeah, we can't even talk talk about my other
favorite spines and more. I could have mentioned so many
other books, but those are phenomenal spines, all of them,
and there are so many more they.
Speaker 4 (42:51):
Are well, and we can do another episode where we
talk about spines because we have a ton of books.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
And I would actually like to do one where we
talk about about internal art and back cover like back
cover art, because back covers get overlooked all the time.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
And there, oh my god, I already know my favorite
of all time back cover, favorite back cover of all time.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
Oh that's good, I know, I know.
Speaker 4 (43:19):
Oh yeah, Well, don't spoil it. But instead of talking
about some more spines, let's talk about another book in
its entirety in our translation of the show.
Speaker 7 (43:30):
Oh uh oh.
Speaker 2 (44:05):
Okay, I'm so excited about this book, you guys. It
is the twenty fifth anniversary Checkbook and it is easily
easily a favorite of mine for so many reasons. But first,
(44:27):
it's the same translation. It's Vladimir Medic published by Albatrouse,
who published all of the Czech translations to date. How
did we get ours through, Carly, actually help me, I did,
and I got them through a wonderful Yes, there's a
wonderful website. It's a Slovak website. It's Martinez dot sk
(44:49):
and they are fabulous to work with and they will
send you books very easily. And that's where the checkbooks
have come from. And they're so wonderful. I can't say
enough nice things about them.
Speaker 1 (45:01):
This is my first time actually looking at the book.
I hate to tell you guys this, and don't be
mad at me, but I literally just took it out
of the package before this episode started.
Speaker 4 (45:10):
That's either such a.
Speaker 3 (45:11):
Treaty, I know. Oh my action.
Speaker 2 (45:15):
I'm so excited to actually get to go over this
in real time with you now, to be really honest,
oh my god, really excited. Scale of one to five
being most difficult to find. You can order it today,
I am. I think shipping is a little bit different,
but it's around thirty to thirty six dollars shipped, which
(45:38):
isn't bad, not at all.
Speaker 4 (45:40):
No, No, that's great. That's a great price from a
book from Europe.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
Yeah, and it's so worth it in my opinion, Oh
my goodness, so worth it. Wow, let's see, let's go through.
I can't wait to put this through the top scale
Yah in papers Oh my goodness. Sorry, I got excited.
Speaker 3 (46:05):
I know I'm flipping.
Speaker 4 (46:06):
You're allowed because this is a new book. We love
getting new books.
Speaker 2 (46:09):
And I mean, I've made a video on this. I've
been over this book. It is just it's a fun book.
It's well done. It is so well done, and it's
an illustrator. I know the illustrator. Hold on, I have
the illustrator. Give me a second, y'all can talk while
(46:30):
I find it, because I want to make sure.
Speaker 3 (46:31):
She's probably in the book.
Speaker 2 (46:36):
I have somewhere that one she's out of the Polanski group.
Speaker 3 (46:40):
And actually, yeah, it doesn't great on the I love
that the title page. That's nice. That's like.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
The illustrator, right, I love that it's literally right on
the title page.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
Bam that title illustrator.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
Good for them, Yep, illustrated by Yep, well done, such talented.
Speaker 7 (47:11):
Art.
Speaker 1 (47:16):
Okay, let's give it a score. I'm like, I want
to see it a smell. Can I smell this book
because I haven't smelled it yet. Oh my god, mm hmmm.
Speaker 4 (47:28):
Mm hmmm mm hmmmm.
Speaker 2 (47:31):
I'm gonna say acceptable.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
Oh that's generous.
Speaker 1 (47:36):
It definitely has a smell. I liked it at first,
but like the more I got into it.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
I don't know, guys, I no.
Speaker 4 (47:44):
I really don't like it. It's a D.
Speaker 3 (47:47):
I agree D for me. I don't like it.
Speaker 4 (47:51):
Maybe even at tea I think it's awful. I think
that's awful.
Speaker 1 (47:56):
No, it's definitely dreadful. It's like hurting my eyes.
Speaker 4 (48:00):
I didn't throw up. I think if I throw up,
it's a te No, that's the only thing that gets
to T. But I'm giving it a D.
Speaker 2 (48:07):
I'm gonna say acceptable.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
Very chemically smelling.
Speaker 2 (48:13):
Yeah, it smells like pine, like very piney.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
Yeah, yes, I agree with that too. It smells like
very woodsy, but like like with like glue on the wood,
like or like rotten pine sal, like pine sal. That's
somehow gone bad like strong. See it made you sneeze.
Speaker 3 (48:37):
I don't like it. I want to ask.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
I want to ask Alan what he thinks. I'm going
to text him to come in here really quick. I
always ask, like his opinion, come smell this book.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
I love when we have a guest smeller.
Speaker 3 (48:55):
I just I just need his opinion, like just to tell.
Speaker 4 (48:58):
Him make sure you have a smile on coming to
be like, you gotta smell this book.
Speaker 1 (49:01):
I'm like, babe, you need to smell this book, Like,
tell me what you think?
Speaker 4 (49:05):
How me what you think?
Speaker 3 (49:06):
He was playing video games? I hope he like actually
comes in.
Speaker 4 (49:10):
Well, we cannot inter interject.
Speaker 3 (49:12):
Yeah when he when he comes back?
Speaker 2 (49:15):
What do we think of the size and proportions?
Speaker 3 (49:19):
Oh wait, here's here? Hold on? Oh okay, can you
smell this book for me really quick?
Speaker 4 (49:31):
I hate it?
Speaker 1 (49:34):
Why?
Speaker 3 (49:36):
Why what do you think? Neither do we all hate it?
It smells really bad. I just want to make sure
we're not going crazy.
Speaker 1 (49:46):
Okay, yeah he does hate it?
Speaker 3 (49:49):
All right, thanks?
Speaker 4 (49:50):
Thanks a lot. Smell was brought to you save big money?
Speaker 3 (49:57):
Yeah, I love that. Where's Minards?
Speaker 2 (50:00):
It's like, yeah, it smells like that terrible Like.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
I just hate it. I hate it. Yeah, it's bad.
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (50:10):
It smells like Minards. I imagine probably smells good. I've
never I've never been to Minards.
Speaker 3 (50:16):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (50:17):
Okay, we don't have that on the island. All right,
amazing size and proportion. I'm giving it like an exceeds expectations.
Plus I really like it a lot. It doesn't have
anything really actually know what? No, I'm changing it to
anax standing I like how I love how thin the
book is, so I feel like the thinness of it
(50:39):
makes the size of it like just feels so nice.
Like it's just very compact, but like not too small.
Like everything just feels very like like she's good, Like
I like, I love the size.
Speaker 3 (50:51):
Size is good.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
I don't know how they've managed to make two different
sized books both perfect, but they've done it. So it's
outstanding from me.
Speaker 1 (50:59):
Yeah, I know, because the original checkbooks are absolutely outstanding.
Speaker 3 (51:03):
They're so good.
Speaker 2 (51:04):
I know. It's like they've nailed it. They have some
little formula that I'm not sure what it is, but
they've nailed it.
Speaker 4 (51:12):
I believe it or not. This small book is bigger
than the original check translation.
Speaker 2 (51:17):
It is of height. Yeah, I like it a lot.
Speaker 4 (51:23):
I don't. I don't. I'm not gushing over it like
you guys are going to give it any expectations. But
I do like its teat.
Speaker 2 (51:32):
I just love it all. And let's see.
Speaker 1 (51:43):
Carly, we've been doing the same format for the translation
of the show for.
Speaker 2 (51:47):
I know eides I'm multi tudd and fifty episodes. How
does it feel in your hand?
Speaker 1 (51:55):
Oh, how it feels in your hands? Well, if you
don't say I mean so outstanding. I love the sharpness
of the corners. I love the sharpness of like the
edge of it, how like the book comes out far
from the pages. It's also a super smooth buttery sextra.
It's very it's super super nice. I love it. I
(52:18):
love that it's the smooth buttery texture, but it doesn't
get like greasy.
Speaker 7 (52:23):
No.
Speaker 1 (52:24):
And also I love like the feeling of the twentieth
anniversary sticker, like because that's very glossy, so like like feeling.
Speaker 2 (52:31):
It's a nice podcast.
Speaker 3 (52:33):
Yeah it's good. Uh yeah, it's an outstanding And I love.
Speaker 2 (52:35):
The rounded spine but it's not super rounded. But it's not.
Speaker 3 (52:38):
Super it's just because it's small. I think it's just
because it's small.
Speaker 2 (52:43):
But I love the like you said, I love how
much of a difference there is between the top of
the spine and where the pages are. But it's not
it's just a well done book. It's well thought through.
So I'm gonna say outstanding for that one.
Speaker 4 (52:56):
For me, I'm gonna with the E only because I
don't personally love how the pages feel like when I
open it up, if I was like flipping through it.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
Oh, I like the tackiness of it.
Speaker 4 (53:10):
Though, see I think the tackiness I don't like that
when I'm reading, So that's just a like me thing. Yeah,
But everything else that you guys both said outstanding about
this book, I just don't love the pages. So I
guess I could give it a OH minus or an
E plus.
Speaker 2 (53:27):
I think both are fine. I mean, I can see
why you would say that about the paper. It's not
the nicest quality of paper. But at the same time,
like if I were to be a reader, I like
it because I can grip it. I like it that
it's a thicker paper. It's not transparent, so you can't
see the text on the other side necessarily it's a
nice black ink. But I can see why you say that,
(53:55):
let's see quality.
Speaker 1 (53:58):
I mean, I think quality kind of goes along with
like everything you were just saying, Carly, Like I like,
I like the quality of the paper. I love the quality,
Like I would give the quality an outstanding. I think
it's beautiful. I think that there's a lot of attention
to detail with it for a book with such like
prominent corners, because again, like the paint, the actual paper
size is a lot smaller than the cover size, the
(54:22):
corners are quite sharp like, and they maintain that, which
I think is tricky sometimes, so I think the quality
has to be really really good to maintain details like that,
so I would give it an outstanding.
Speaker 2 (54:37):
I would agree. I think the ink saturation as well,
because they've pulled off a wonderful ombre between blue to
like dark purple at the top of the book, and
the blue is like the middle of the book where
the water is to the top where the sunset is,
and the ombres there it is well done, and then
you have this wonderful like lilac purple where the Harry
(54:58):
Potter font is, which I love that they went with
a purple instead of like the usual gold or yellow
or whatever. They went with a purple on Book one,
which is so nice and it stands out so well
with the rest of the color palette used. And the
ombre carries over onto the back of the book so well,
and the color saturation and then you go into like
(55:22):
the color throughout the book. I don't know, just outstanding
quality is outstanding. They really wanted to bang up twenty
fifth anniversary and they did a good job.
Speaker 4 (56:02):
All right, We have another guest Smeller yes, here, come
smell the book.
Speaker 3 (56:11):
No one else is read up read ah read, Uh, they're.
Speaker 4 (56:17):
Chanting for you.
Speaker 2 (56:23):
I would ask my dog, but I'd be afraid he would.
Speaker 4 (56:25):
Really bad at like basking her reaction with.
Speaker 1 (56:29):
Her taste the book, just the book? Does she listen
to our podcast? Does she know what we do?
Speaker 3 (56:40):
I know I'm teasing. I know she listens.
Speaker 4 (56:42):
Would you give it, if you had to give it
a score? Acceptable? Okay? We all hated.
Speaker 2 (56:51):
It was acceptable?
Speaker 4 (56:54):
Melanie hated it. I hated it. Melanie's husband hated it.
Speaker 3 (56:58):
Rita knows my husband. She met her.
Speaker 1 (57:00):
She knows his name is Alan. Yeah, yeah, she's like
Melanie's husband hated it. I'm like, Rita knows my husband.
We all met, we went out to dinner.
Speaker 4 (57:13):
That's interesting.
Speaker 3 (57:14):
We shared apps, We did share it. I'm just teasing.
Speaker 1 (57:21):
You because the way that you said it, it made
it seem like, oh, yeah, Melanie's husband like referring to
my husband to Rita. No, but you, but you did.
You were talking to Rita, you weren't talking to the audience.
Go ahead, Yeah, silly.
Speaker 3 (57:39):
Thank you, Thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (57:46):
That other guest smeller was also brought to you by
Minards save big money. Your local twin City is Manard's dealer, Curly.
I I would give this is quality. I would give
it also and exceeds expectations only because I don't love
(58:08):
the paper, like, so maybe oh minus, I don't know,
give me a no, I'll do O minus because you
know what I'll do, oh minus because like two weeks ago,
I was sitting there thinking I need a good ombre
in the next book that I get. Okay, what shows
up at my house? This book with the ombre? So
yeah it I think it's great. And really, the way
(58:30):
the spine is will not crack. This is like one
of those books where no matter what page you read,
it's super easy to get at. It won't crack. It's
just made really well. So yeah, I'll give it an outstanding,
just a straight up outstanding. It's it's a very well
made book. It just yea smells bad and.
Speaker 2 (58:50):
I don't like paper. It's thick paper. So I mean,
if you're going to sit and read it, it's meant
to be read well, like it's not going to fall apart.
Read it once? Sure, which I appreciate cover art or
interpretation of cover art. Oh my goodness, you guys outstanding.
Speaker 4 (59:11):
Did you just say, Oh my goodness, Carly, I did.
Speaker 3 (59:15):
I did.
Speaker 2 (59:16):
I'm glad you got it.
Speaker 4 (59:19):
Because I think that means all of us give it
in oh yeah, oh yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (59:27):
For the cover art, it is so good. I love
Harry's scarf and I love what I love about it
is you see all of the main elements from that
we recognize from Hogwarts, sort of Harry Potter. You have
the pitch and the train, and Hagrid and Fang and
the lake and the castle, and you know all of
(59:49):
those things, but they're done so well. And I love
this moment where Harry's facing the reader right and his
scarf is like kind of blowing in the wind, and
you have Hagrid's hut way in the background, the smoke
kind of going and Haggard looks like such a giant,
and his house is way in the background because he's
way taller than his house. And but there's still, even
(01:00:11):
despite all of this going on, there's still such a quietness.
Like when I look at it, it's just a very
quiet moment. To me, it's a very neat thing. I
don't hear anything other than just kind of like the wind.
It's a very neat thing. I really love this depiction
of Harry and Hogwarts and Hagrid and I don't know,
(01:00:32):
really well done.
Speaker 4 (01:00:35):
The art style reminds me of like an indie animated film. Yeah,
not like your classic Disney Run of the mill. It's
very very two dimensional looking. Yeah, there's maybe no sense
of depth. There really aren't shadows on a lot of things,
so it looks really flat, almost like it's made out
(01:00:57):
of like paper dolls.
Speaker 8 (01:01:00):
I was gonna say that Harry looks like, yeah, kind
of like fantastic mister Fox vibes if you've seen that movie.
Speaker 4 (01:01:11):
I don't know, it's really it's really just its own thing,
which is so cool. That's what That's what I want
to see in unique art. I want it to be
unique and very whatever country is this is there we
go check twenty fifth anniversary and obviously that that ombre
on the cover.
Speaker 2 (01:01:31):
Carly, Yeah, just makes it like a well done.
Speaker 4 (01:01:34):
Sunset and the inverse of it, like you would think
the more reds would be like closer to where the
sun would be setting on the bottom, but because it's
that teal, it's just this cool, cool color. I'd love
a guitar this color like that would.
Speaker 2 (01:01:49):
Be really oh yeah. And then the backside you have
just the silhouette of the Golden of the Golden of
the Trio just doing their things, running downhill. It's so fun.
It's such a fun fun thing. So it's an outstanding
from all of us on that.
Speaker 6 (01:02:07):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:02:09):
And there's so many other wonderful things to talk about
with this book. I don't even think we've touched on nearly.
Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
I feel like we can't.
Speaker 1 (01:02:16):
I feel like we can't say like one specific X
factor because it does have like a lot of things
that are like unique about it. There's internal cover, our
internal illustrations that are mind blowing there. Unfortunately for me,
there's just not enough of them. They take up a
whole two page spread, but I think there's only like
(01:02:38):
four or five of them. I wish there was more
because they are gorgeous. So you see like an image
of Haggard holding Harry when he's dropping him off at
the Dursleys, Harry in front of the maryor Virus said,
which is beautifully done, Harry getting sorted. There's uh, what
was the other one? The centaurs, right, and I think
(01:02:59):
that that's the last one.
Speaker 3 (01:03:01):
So like that's it.
Speaker 1 (01:03:02):
Yeah, yeah, I wish that there was more of that.
I love the interpretation of Hagrid. I think that the
internal art is stunning. My other like mentioned would be like,
not only is there ribbon book markers, but there's a
double two ribbon bookmark.
Speaker 3 (01:03:20):
There are two, and they are grit and.
Speaker 1 (01:03:22):
Colors, like it is one goldish yellow and one scarlet
red ribbon bookmark and they are beautiful.
Speaker 2 (01:03:32):
And they're not fraying. They're not even fraying yet. They're ribbons.
Mine are still to them beautifully into the books.
Speaker 4 (01:03:40):
And your special someone can both read this book for
the first time. This it's not very long book that
was not written for adults, necessarily needs two ribbon bookmarks.
But I'm not going to say no, But I am
kind of like, why did we have two in this
(01:04:01):
little teeny book? The paper the big german book's got multiple,
Like I can see that the end.
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
Papers matched the Harry Potter lettering on the front of
the cover, which is really fun.
Speaker 4 (01:04:15):
Eric talking about Pitched Head first.
Speaker 3 (01:04:18):
Oh yeah, it's beautiful.
Speaker 1 (01:04:19):
Eric was talking about, like I told I wanted to
talk about this in the news.
Speaker 3 (01:04:23):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (01:04:24):
He was talking about like obviously at the end of
the day, this is like a children's book.
Speaker 3 (01:04:28):
I have a.
Speaker 1 (01:04:28):
Friend at work whose son just read Harry Potter for
the first time Red Sorcerer's Stone. He's six years old,
and he it was like his first like chapter book
that he read on his own. He's like a very
advanced reader. And she was telling me all about like
like he's a collector type kid. He but she's only
buying him one hardcover book at a time, like as
(01:04:49):
he reads it, he has to like read it before
he can get the next one. So it's been fun,
Like on my lunch breaks, I've been talking to her
about the different editions and whatnot. So I ended up
gifting her for him an illustrated box set of books
one through three that I just had laying around. It
was still plastic, so I was like, take this, and
(01:05:09):
he saw them or heard that I was giving those
to him, and he was like, no, I don't want them,
because he was he's so proud of the fact that
this is a first like not picture book that he's reading,
so he didn't want the illustrated editions, but once he
saw them, he was like stoked. And then I also
had like a German original cover art hardcover book that
I gave to him, and a Ancient Greek and Ancient
(01:05:34):
Greek Johnny Duddell cover which was really cool that I
just had like laying rounds extra and he was like
so excited about it, and he drew me like the
most beautiful little picture afterward that was like Hufflepuff themed,
like it was so cute. But like I was like,
oh my god, it's like the next generation of collectors,
Like I can only hope that my own children will
be like as passionate about Harry Potter. Nora, I feel like,
(01:05:57):
because she's like growing up surrounded by it, Like she
like knows what Harry Potter is, but she doesn't know
what Harry Potter is yet, so she's she's got to
gain a better attention span before I can sit and
read them with her, because right now she doesn't get
that anyway. Sorry, sorry for that interruption. It was just
Eric had mentioned like, oh, yeah, it's a children's buck,
(01:06:19):
and I forgot. I was like, oh my gosh, Like
this was such a cool, like sweet little.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
What I think is so cool about this book is
that if you're buying it from the website, it's like
sixteen seventeen year. Oh, and you get internal artwork. It's
not that much, but it's still some really cool illustrations,
and you have wonderful attention to detail, wonderful cover art
and really nice in papers, really nice bookmarks, like for
(01:06:47):
not a lot of money, like really really well done.
I am super super excited they have. While I would
love more internal illustrations, it's only because the art is
so good that I would love to see more of it.
But I'm very very pleased with what we've got. It's
an it's just an outstanding book in my opinion. I'm
(01:07:07):
just thrilled. And if there's a whole set coming out,
I'm host. I just need to give them all my
money now.
Speaker 4 (01:07:16):
Fortunately, like you just mentioned, it won't be that much.
But I know this is this one of those things
where like I don't care what printing of this there's
going to be. So if it's clear that they are
going to come out with all of them, would it
be cheaper to wait till they're done and then get
them all together? I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:07:37):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:07:38):
I'm really also changing how I'm doing I'm collecting, but
this is unique cover art and it's gorgeous, so meet
my criteria. So you know, I just have to bite
the bullet. At some point it'll be fine.
Speaker 4 (01:07:55):
Everything will be fine, Yeah, it will.
Speaker 2 (01:07:58):
And it's one. I mean, it is really well done.
And if there's a box set, it would be great.
Speaker 3 (01:08:08):
Box Sets are great. Oh I know, I love a
good box sets are great.
Speaker 1 (01:08:13):
And what else was great was all of season five
of this podcast, which now is coming to a probable
close because that is all we have time for today.
So if you want to get in touch with us,
you could do it in a whole bunch of ways. Instagram,
Dialogue Ali podcasts on Instagram. We have a website which
(01:08:33):
is just Dialogue Alley dot com. It has this really
cool tool if you need to know more about your
Harry Potter book, particularly if you want to know if
it's valuable, that's on there. Eric and I and Carly
like we all like drop the links to this website
probably daily on all of these different Facebook groups of
(01:08:54):
people wanting to know about their books.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
Here it is.
Speaker 1 (01:08:58):
We also have Armor linked on our website now it's
on a little book on the top that's the shop,
so that'll link you to our merch. So if you
see anything and you want anything, that's on there now too.
Other places that you can find us. Youvet Carly's website
as always. You can find Peter on his social media platforms.
We know that he's been busy with his play for
(01:09:21):
the last however many weeks and stuff, but he'll be
back eventually. You know, Peter's a busy guy. We love
them like we're just interests.
Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
Yeah, we go on Peter time.
Speaker 1 (01:09:32):
Sometimes it's also a summer like go live your best life,
like he's he's doing his play and he's so good
at those things, like I and I know it makes
him happy.
Speaker 2 (01:09:43):
So like I love to glad Ellie Field trip to
go watch Peter perform.
Speaker 1 (01:09:48):
I just want to go take a dialogue alley trip
to go just hang out with Peter. I miss you guys.
I feel like I mean, actually I've seen Eric like
quite a bit lately, but Carly I haven't, Like, I know,
I haven't seen Carly in such like a long time.
I haven't seen Peter in a while. Like just missing
on you guys, but yeah, uh you can what Oh,
(01:10:17):
Eric is like mouthing something and I'm like, what are
you saying? We also we also have a Patreon, so
if you like what you're listening to, there's like a
little is that.
Speaker 3 (01:10:27):
Is that not what you were saying? What were you saying?
That is what I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (01:10:30):
But now it sounds petty. Now it sounds petty, like
I'm like, don't forget about her Patriot.
Speaker 3 (01:10:35):
No, it's like I can't read.
Speaker 1 (01:10:36):
Also, I have like vocal fry, like I had the
mildly annoying day today, so I can't. No, we love
our Patreon because it gives you access to our discord, like,
and our discord gives you access to all of this
stuff and all of these resources and all this fun,
fun fun things.
Speaker 3 (01:10:55):
I don't know. So our Patreon's cool, Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:10:58):
Our discord is really fun. I'm in our discord quite
a bit.
Speaker 1 (01:11:02):
See, I can't say that I'm in our discord as much.
I do get like the notifications so like every so
like so I'll see what's going on in our discord.
But I just like, like today I got stuck in
traffic for like an hour and forty five minutes trying
to get home from work. I didn't get home until
(01:11:22):
like six o'clock. Then we had to get dinner sorted out.
Then we had to give both kids bath and put
both kids to bed. I didn't get that done literally
until we came to podcast today.
Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
So I just don't have time. I don't have time.
I wish I had, I wish I did.
Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
I do love everyone, like with my whole heart, just
so hard from our discord. Everyone's wonderful. It's such an
awesome community and you could be a part of it
too by supporting us on Patreon.
Speaker 3 (01:11:55):
See there we go, Eric.
Speaker 4 (01:11:57):
That That's what I was. That's that is literally what
I was like hoping that you'd say, is like to
thank the patrons and especially honestly with the merch.
Speaker 3 (01:12:04):
Shop that we do, Oh my gosh, I know.
Speaker 4 (01:12:06):
The Patreon supporters were some of the first people to
get stuff. They gave us feedback if they saw something
they wanted that we didn't have on there. We tried
to make something that we could put on the shop.
So some of a lot of the items that you
see on the shop were things that people that sports
and Patreon specifically ask for, like can you do a
(01:12:29):
shirt that has this and then this on the sleeve,
or can you do a like a zip up hoodie?
With a thing. Like most of the stuff on there,
people asked for, can you make a notebook like a
journal like.
Speaker 3 (01:12:40):
I ended up getting the journal. It's great cooler I
did the journal.
Speaker 2 (01:12:44):
I would love to know what you think about the
paper quality, because one of my best friends loved journaling,
and I would love to know what you think about
the paper. Oh you already, I have it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
I could tell you a lot about paper quality because
my hyperfixation right now is fountain pas, ends and journaling.
Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
So did you see you know it was a Harry
Potter fountain pin cross.
Speaker 1 (01:13:07):
No, but I do have the lommy Harry Potter fountain
pen and always all.
Speaker 3 (01:13:14):
All for poor houses. Where way do you guys want
to see my pens?
Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
You're supposed to this one, my Hufflepuff fountain pen. My lammy,
it's so cute. I have that one. I have a
twy Eco pin.
Speaker 2 (01:13:34):
I have so many.
Speaker 3 (01:13:37):
To talk about pens, girl, Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (01:13:39):
I love fountain They're all I use, Like, I literally
only use fountain pens at work. All right, let's let's.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
Uh, let's stop recording this podcast so we can talk
about pens. So yeah, guys, oh my gosh, we had
(01:14:09):
to talk about Penn's but it was thank Thank you
everyone so much for your support. Special shout out thanks
to Carolyn, who designed our logo. She's been so helpful
when it came to the merch and getting her feedback.
We take very seriously because it's her logo, so we
want to make it look good. She's been so helpful,
(01:14:31):
so so wonderful. Oh and then I do have one
other thing I have to say too, also special things
as always to Tommy, our editor. We don't thank him enough,
but he's fabulous, so we have to thank him.
Speaker 3 (01:14:42):
And I do want to say.
Speaker 4 (01:14:43):
Too, I boughtoim lunch last month.
Speaker 1 (01:14:46):
I mean amazing, He's wonderful. He deserves all the lunches.
H Harrison, who's one of our like very involved listeners,
one of our like very good friends. He's going to
be at is It Leaky Kon at the end of
the summer to Coon in Chanta Kon. Okay, So he's
(01:15:07):
going to be at an Enchanta Kon at the end
of the summer, and he actually has exclusive dialogue Ali
ribbons like you know, like whenever you go to like
these Harry Potter conventions, they have the ribbons that you
attached to your badge, so.
Speaker 3 (01:15:17):
We have those.
Speaker 1 (01:15:18):
I've I've always wanted to be a person that had
ribbons to give out. So Harrison's going to be having
those and repping some awesome dialogue Ali stuff. So if
you're going to Enchanta Khan, keep an eye out for
him there.
Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
But yeah, this.
Speaker 1 (01:15:36):
Should have been talked about in news. I'm so sorry, guys.
Speaker 4 (01:15:38):
But but you know what it is.
Speaker 1 (01:15:40):
It's also that I'm realizing that, like this is possibly
our last episode for the summer, so like, oh, maybe
it's something that if we had another episode in two weeks,
like we would have talked about it then.
Speaker 3 (01:15:50):
I don't know. I still I have a feeling.
Speaker 1 (01:15:52):
We might come out with like one more episode for
the summer, but like who knows, stay tuned, will maybe
who knows, who knows, I'd be surprised. But for right now,
it is time to walk back to the hard chain
into your daily night lives, and we will catch you
next time. Bye bye, Dia.
