Stephanie (00:01):
I am Stephanie Evans
and this is Diaries of a Modern
Trailblazer.
Take note of the journey and beinspired to forge your own
amazing path.
This episode marks my ninthepisode.
And I just want to start off bysaying I am so grateful to every
(00:25):
single one of you who taps inand listens.
It means a lot to me.
And I truly hope that you'regaining nuggets of knowledge,
and you're inspired with thispodcast.
And, you know, to be quitefrank, I would think by now,
(00:49):
putting out podcast episodeswould be a pretty seamless and
an easier experience.
But for me, I still have to pushmyself to execute each and every
one of these episodes.
And one of the most importantthings that I remind myself is
(01:09):
that every time I put out anepisode, it's me taking the
action to show up for myself.
As you may know, I'm the founderof a leather goods brand,
Pamoja, which is Swahili for theword togetherness.
(01:30):
One of the most importantaspects of this brand for me is
to build a community around itand have purpose.
And that's what led me to createthis podcast.
Right now, I'm currently readingthe book called Draw the Circle,
and it's a 40 day prayerchallenge.
(01:52):
I'm halfway through it on day20, and it's so ironic because
this day focuses on the factthat we're never prepared to do
what God calls us to do.
In fact, some may end upspending their entire lives
getting ready for what God wantsthem to do, but never end up
(02:15):
doing it because they never cometo the realization that they'll
never be ready.
It's so important to not bestuck, but to rather just do it.
And I'm still blindly walking infaith as I'm building out this
(02:37):
brand, but I believe that thereare many great things that are
yet to come.
A few weeks ago, I got an emailfrom my mentor, Zawadi Bryant,
who happened to be the firstguest on this podcast.
And she shared with me herrecent trip to Kenya to visit a
(02:58):
school that her church opened.
They ended up partnering withthe Kujuwa Initiative, which is
the charity a portion ofPamoja's proceeds goes to, to
train and educate young womenand girls on sexual reproductive
health, which, by the way, thefounder, Joanna Maiden, who has
(03:20):
also been a podcast guest onhere, extended as part of Soko
Kenya.
So, if you haven't listened tothose episodes yet, I highly
encourage you to browse throughthe previous episodes and take a
listen because they arephenomenally amazing women with
(03:40):
great stories.
So anyway, this for me, this iswalking by faith and this is
what it means to createcommunity and what it means to
live in purpose.
By creating that connectionbetween Zawadi and Joanna, over
(04:03):
400 children's lives have beentouched, learning the importance
of feminine hygiene, given thetools and resources to have more
confidence to move forward andnot to be disrupted on a monthly
basis when it comes to theireducation, just because of a
period.
(04:25):
And it started with thisrealization, to execute on what
God has called me to do, to stepin faith, to launch Pomoja, and
to continue to carry out thework that I'm doing with this
brand.
And it's so exciting, because, like I said, there's so much in
(04:48):
store, and this is just thebeginning.
And with that being said, we'reover halfway through the year
now, which is insane to me.
Like, time just flies by.
Um, but anyway, earlier in theyear, I worked on a vision
(05:10):
board.
I attended a vision board event, which was really amazing.
And it's just always reallygreat to take the time to
reflect on what it is you seefor yourself.
You know, what you want toaccomplish and putting that
(05:33):
vision out there.
And so there are really twocomponents, there was a written
vision board and there was alsoa visual portion.
And so I'm going to share what Iwrote on the written version.
And at the top of it, I justwanted to highlight with these
(05:56):
words, I want to walk in thefullness of my blessings.
And there were nine differentprompts in this um, written
vision board.
Excuse me.
Uh, the first one being, I wantto create this.
(06:19):
I want to create an iconicheritage brand and that is what
I'm doing as I'm buildingPomoja.
I want to improve this skill ofnetworking to build brand
partnership opportunities.
And I'll circle back on that onebecause that's what I'm really
(06:45):
working towards building up toright now.
I want to become better at this.
I want to become better atpodcasting and I'm doing, I'm
practicing that right now byworking on my ninth episode and
practice makes perfect.
(07:07):
Like you're not going to begreat the first time.
So like consistency, um, Makingthe time, carving out that time
to do it.
I just know I'm going to getbetter at this.
I'm really excited to see whatthis molds into in the future.
(07:30):
I want to build this new habitof seeing mistakes as learning
opportunities and not beingcritical and hard on myself when
I make mistakes.
I want to earn this amount ofmoney and on this one, I put, I
want to earn an abundant amountof money through multiple
(07:53):
sources of income.
I'm not putting a cap on thatbecause what I have in my mind,
it may be a limiting number andso I'm just putting it out
there.
An abundant amount of moneythrough multiple sources of
income.
I want to be able to be at apoint where I can financially
(08:20):
support dope initiatives, youknow?
Um, organizations, entrepreneurs, and all of that.
And that's gonna come by havingan abundant amount of money
through multiple sources ofincome.
So, yeah.
(08:40):
I want to commit to a healthierlifestyle.
So I would say that I generallyeat pretty healthy, try to have
a balanced diet, and I work out.
But one thing that I will say Ifocus on in terms of building
(09:02):
out a healthier lifestyle isfocusing on the mental health
piece.
Because...
the way I feel, the way Iperceive myself and think really
impacts me, you know.
It impacts each and every one ofus.
And I, I did some therapy thisyear and it was, I would say it
(09:30):
has been life changing for me.
Acknowledging that I needed thehelp and seeking it was critical
and really focusing on my mentalhealth is, it's definitely.
I know it's a game changer forme.
(09:52):
I want to learn this new thing.
And for me that has beenlearning about Web3, and how I
should be thinking aboututilizing it for my business.
And in particular, I wanted tolearn more about NFTs.
(10:14):
Why not learn from the best?
And I purchased an NFT that LVMHoffered through one of their
brands, Hennessy.
It is called the Cafe 11Project, um, that Hennessy
(10:36):
offered.
It's been a wonderful experiencejust seeing how a heritage brand
like Hennessy just navigate newterritory and build a unique
community on Discord.
I went to an event in Miamiduring Art Basel that they
(10:59):
kicked off the project with, which was a really great
experience.
And right now we're co-creatinga Hennessy, well really the
artwork for the box and thebottle with an artist that we
selected.
(11:19):
And it's, it's really cool tosee what a brand like that is
doing in this space.
And this is the new wave as faras web goes.
So really taking the initiativeto tap in and learn and see what
others are doing has been areally cool experience for me.
(11:46):
I want to try being in spacesand places full of opportunity.
And sometimes it may happenthrough coincidence, but I want
to be intentional about that.
And there's two big things thisyear for me.
(12:11):
One of them was attendingMonique Rodriguez's Secret Sauce
to Success retreat.
And Monique is the founder ofMielle Haircare, which she had
recently sold, she sold thisyear to Procter Gamble.
(12:32):
That event was phenomenal interms of meeting like minded
individuals, entrepreneurs, andbeing inspired, and just coming
to the realization that, like, this is all possible.
I just have to keep at it.
(12:53):
And I actually pitched my brandto her and, yeah, it was, it was
really cool.
And the other thing is, being ina showroom in New York in
September to present acollection that I'm working on,
to take hold of someopportunities in the future.
(13:18):
The last item on my vision boardis I want to start doing this
new thing.
And that is weight training.
This is the only thing on myvision board that I have not
touched on yet.
And, um, I know I'm going to getthere.
(13:40):
I try to work out five times aweek, but the range is like
three to five times, and I wantto incorporate weight training.
So, just circling back onbuilding brand partnership
opportunities, to give you anupdate on my progress, I'm
(14:03):
currently sampling into a fewnew bags and a card case to be
added to my collection, becauseI'm going to achieve that goal
that I set out for myself, whichis to present a collection in
September in New York, in ashowroom, to be picked up by
some amazing wholesale accounts,as I mentioned.
(14:29):
It's never an easy route to beton yourself, and to have the
wherewithal to push through.
Trust me.
I know because I initiatedconversations with a
manufacturing partner inDecember of last year to sample
(14:50):
two of these bags.
And to say the least, it was afailure in my opinion.
I didn't receive those samplesuntil May, and they didn't meet
my quality standards.
I actually thought I was goingto go to that secret sauce,
secret sauce to success retreatwith these sampled bags and, you
(15:15):
know, just show them off and getfeedback, but they weren't even
ready in early March.
I didn't get them until May,which was insane.
For these type of things tohappen and be executed,
communication is key.
(15:36):
It was pretty much radio silencewhen I reached out to them for
updates, and I wasn't at ease.
I didn't even think I was goingto get these bags to be honest
with you.
But instead of feeling defeated, throwing in the towel.
You know, it literally felt likeI threw money in the trash,
which is so hard, because thisis my hard earned money from my
(16:03):
savings that I'm putting in toget these samples produced.
Although these things happened,I went back to the drawing board
and I started over.
I reached out to a large numberof manufacturers across the
globe, trying to filter outsomeone who would be able to
(16:25):
meet my quality standards, hadgreat communication, and overall
just a great partner to workwith.
And that's a lot to filter ifyou're only gaining a sense of
who this manufacturer is viaemail and a Zoom call.
So I had to go with my gut.
(16:46):
And it had to work, because timeis of the essence.
You know, at the end of the day,I have to be in New York in
September, presenting acollection.
Fast forward, I am blessed withthe manufacturing partner that
I'm currently working with inRomania.
So, I know you may be wondering, like, why, why didn't you just
(17:12):
sample with the manufacturer whomakes your current bags?
Well, I most definitely wantedto sample with my manufacturer
in Spain, but, you know, you,you learn these hard lessons and
challenges as you continue togrow and move forward.
(17:36):
I was told at the time when Ireached out to them, I was told
that they have large orders withChloé and Poline, which are
really great quality leathergoods brands, so you know at the
end of the day, I don't playwhen it comes to quality and
(17:56):
craftsmanship.
They just weren't willing towork with me on my sampling
unless I committed to place anorder with them.
And at this point in time, thepurpose of my sampling is to
present a range of product towholesale accounts in order to
gain large orders, to grow thedistribution of the brand, to
(18:21):
create more awareness and gain acustomer base.
But, sometimes, that long termvision is blinded by short term
expectations.
You know?
And my manufacturing partner inSpain was like, you know, during
(18:47):
COVID, our factory had capacity, because orders weren't coming
through at that time.
We don't have capacity unlessyou're going to bring volume.
So, that was a tough pill toswallow, but I had to figure out
(19:08):
a workaround, and...
Huh.
I'm working, I'm working towardsgetting to that finish line.
It's so much that goes intosampling.
I have such a newfound respectfor...
(19:30):
for that process overall.
You know, I've seen it workingfor Coach as a merchandise
planner, but yeah, there's,there's a lot that goes into it.
But, yeah.
I just, I wasn't going to allowthe short term.
(19:53):
I just wasn't going to allowthat to defeat me because I'm
building something great.
I'm building something that ishere to stand the test of time
that will be impactful.
And that is way bigger than meand what I'm imagining now.
(20:14):
And trust me, I have big plans.
I have very big visions for thefuture.
I'm being honest on this podcastabout where I stand and what I'm
going through because I want toshare this journey.
I want people to understandwhere I started, where I'm
(20:35):
coming from, and witness thegreat progress of what it is I'm
executing.
And I also want to be able tosit back and reflect on these
moments, because it's not easy.
And it will never be easy rightnow, and it will most definitely
not be easy going forward.
But I'm up for the challenge, and I will continue with a
(20:59):
strong faith that I have to pushthrough.
You know, I was reallystruggling with what I was going
to touch on for this podcast, and it's just crazy how I had
this aha moment and justrealized, and just decided to
sit down and talk while readingthis book.
(21:22):
It's crazy and it's wonderfulhow God works through us and I'm
just grateful to be a messenger.
Like, a few minutes ago, Imentioned how daunting it can be
to put out these podcasts.
But, just In the spur of themoment, it came to me, and
(21:44):
that's kind of what life isabout.
You know, you just gotta get toa point of not being stuck in
our own heads, and preventingourselves from seeing the
greatness that lies within us.
I'll leave you with thesequestions that I just read.
(22:06):
Why do we operate with this redlight mentality.
Why are we waiting for the greenlight we've already been given?
Let this be a moment toencourage you to go out there
and push through on those thingsthat you've been holding out for
(22:28):
yourself.
Because the real question is whynot?
And that's a wrap.
So own it and make moves.
One day, I want to share yourjourney on this podcast.
