Howard City’s History: Hello, I’m Duane from the Discover Montcalm Podcast, and we’re excited to kick off a new series exploring the history of our local communities. In episode 155, I’m joined by Don Bauman, a lifelong Howard City resident whose family has lived here since 1872.
Howard City’s History through the town’s past
Don takes us on a fascinating journey through Howard City’s History remembering the past — walking us through buildings that used to stand, businesses that shaped the community, and stories of daily life from decades ago. From the old railroad and the creamery to Skinner Steamer, once the world’s largest manufacturer of sideboards, Don shares memories of the town’s industrial roots and the people who made Howard City what it is today.
We also explore the town’s commercial life — from old gas stations and hardware stores to Frank Salufo’s early IGA beginnings. Don recalls watching the trains fill their engines at the water tower, playing under the World War II veterans’ monument, and the lively Saturday nights when Main Street was the hub of local life.
