El auge del cine mexicano favoreció el surgimiento de una nueva generación de directores: Emilio Fernández, Julio Bracho, Roberto Gavaldón e Ismael Rodríguez, por mencionar a algunos. Para el público, sin embargo, fue más interesante la consolidación de un auténtico cuadro de estrellas nacionales. María Félix, Mario Moreno “Cantinflas”, Pedro Armendáriz, Andrea Palma, Jorge Negrete, Sara García, Fernando y Andrés Soler, Joaquín Pardavé, Arturo de Córdova y Dolores del Río serían las figuras principales de un “star system” sin precedentes en la historia del cine en español (García Riera, 1986: 125). En esos años, el cine mexicano abordó más temas y géneros que en ninguna otra época. Obras literarias, comedias rancheras, películas policíacas, comedias musicales y melodramas, formaron parte del inventario cinematográfico mexicano de aquellos años.
