This is the third episode in a series that overviews the content of my book Divorce Your Remarriage. I am Chris Iverson and in this episode I cover the passages in the gospels that provide Jesus’ teaching on divorce and remarriage: Matthew 5:32, Matthew 19:3-12, Mark 10:2-12, and Luke 16:18.  However, I leave the exception clause, Romans 7, and I Corinthians 7 for future episodes.  This episode includes discussion about Deuteronomy 24, the Talmud, the rabbis Hillel and Shammai, and the Essenes view as written in the Damascus Document.  I identify and resolve the tension between the teaching of Jesus and Moses on this subject.  The debate in Matthew 19 is not between the Hillel and Shammai views, but rather between the Hillel and Essene views.  Jesus rejects the Hillel framing that centers on Deuteronomy 24 and instead approves the Essene view that Genesis is the key text on this subject.  Therefore, the divorce and remarriage moral formulations Jesus taught should be understood as absolutist exceptionless conclusions based on Genesis, not a restatement of Deuteronomy 24:1.  Naturally, this brings up a great question for the next episode: If Jesus’ taught against any exceptions, what does the exception clause mean?

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
