Speaker 1 (00:01):
If you told me that, after topping out at 285 pounds,
that I would be able to loseover 85 pounds within a year,
that I would reverse my diabetes, that I would completely
transform my life, I wouldn'thave believed you or I

(00:21):
definitely would have some doubt.
But this journey isn't justabout reversing diabetes and
it's not just about a year oftransformation.
It's actually 25 years in themaking.
If you're new to me, I'm DrDwayne Wood, that's Wood with an
E.
The E stands for endocrinology.
Here on the channel, I educate,I empower and I encourage you

(00:43):
to take charge of your health, your life, avoid complications
and go to the next level.
We're creating the life we'vealways wanted and in this year
2024, our new theme is New YearUU.
So, as you, you heard me say,if you told me that after

(01:23):
topping 285 pounds yeah, 285pounds that I would be able to
lose 85 pounds to reverse mydiabetes and set myself up for
metabolic success, even as theendocrinologist, even as the

(01:49):
hormone guy, even as the guywhose job it is to help people
with their metabolic disease,I'll tell you it would have been
a hard thought.
Listen to me, it would havebeen a hard thought.

(02:09):
Listen to me, it would havebeen a hard thought, because
there is so much that goes intomanaging diabetes, there's so
much that goes into metabolicdisease.
There's so much that goes intoreversing diabetes, as you guys
have heard me talk about.
So this journey, as we've beentalking about here, it's a year
process New year, new you.

(02:31):
You saw my blood sugars or yousaw my weight right 52 pounds
over 2023, right 52 pounds, so apound a week.
But the journey is not justabout a year.
It's 25 years in the making.
Now I want you to think, I wantyou to take a moment and I want

(02:52):
you to think about a challengethat you've been facing for a
long time.
Maybe it's a health issue,maybe it's a other personal
struggle or something that'sbeen weighing on you for years.
What if I told you that withinyou, within a year, within you,

(03:14):
you have the power to completelychange that part of your life,
that you have the potential, that you have unlimited ability?
Would you believe me?
25 years ago a little bit morethan that, actually I was
diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
I remember the exact momentthat I heard the words.

(03:36):
I had gone to my doctor, I hadtalked to him about my symptoms
and he had done some tests.
I went back home, I wassleeping y'all my symptoms and
he had done some tests.
I went back home, I wassleeping y'all and I remember my
wife waking me up and sayinghey, dwayne, your doctor called
and he said that you havediabetes.
The shock, the fear, theoverwhelming sense of what now?

(04:01):
But it wasn't just thediagnosis that was weighing on
me, it was everything else thatwas surrounding it.
Right and just like in life, there are all these things that
are coming at us, and if one ofthem came, or if two of them
came, one at a time, we couldprobably manage that.

(04:22):
But when they all come together, it seems so insurmountable.
The stress from being inmedical school, and not just the
stress of being in medicalschool this was my third career
change y'all, and I was only 30years old.
It felt like my life was in aconstant flux and I was always

(04:48):
just shy of being successful, but I was always just shy of
giving up.
Can you relate to that?
The feeling that life keepsthrowing things at you and all
you can do is to try to stayafloat?
Maybe you've been there.

(05:10):
Maybe you've been there too.
Let me take a moment.
Let me tell you about one March, several years ago.
I went whitewater rafting.
You may have heard this story.
Now picture this You're in araft, the water is calm at first
, but then it starts to getrough.

(05:31):
The guide is shoutinginstructions and suddenly the
raft tips.
The guide is shoutinginstructions, you're thrown into
the water and I was thrown intothe water and instinctively I
grabbed for the raft, thinkingthat it was my lifeline, and I
held on for dear life.
But what I quickly learned wasbecause I was at the front of

(05:55):
the raft and the raft was movingfaster than me that it soon
covered me.
But here's the thing what ifthe thing that you're holding on
to, what if it's the very thingthat is the thing that's
actually causing the problem?
What if the very thing you'reclinging to for safety is

(06:17):
actually what's pulling youunder?
Clinging to for safety isactually what's pulling you
under.
That was me under the water, clinging to the raft, trying to
hold on for dear life.
But the more I held on, themore I realized I couldn't
breathe.
Do you know what's under a raftin the water?

(06:38):
There's not a lot of air.
There's not a lot of air.
In fact, there's no air.
And it hit me.
How often do we hold on tothings in our lives that we
think are saving us when, inreality, they're dragging us
down?
I want you to take a moment tothink.
What are you holding on tothat's no longer serving you?

(07:01):
What are you clinging to out offear, even though it's keeping
you from moving forward?
For me, it was unhealthy habits.
It was denial, it was stress,it was inappropriate and
buffering behavior.
I thought they were keeping meafloat, I thought they were just

(07:26):
, you know, coping habits, butthey were suffocating me.
It wasn't until I wascompletely out of options.
It wasn't until I wascompletely out of options,
completely out of breath, that Ifinally let go.
And in that moment of lettinggo, something shifted.

(07:56):
I didn't know what was going tohappen next, but I knew I
couldn't stay where I was.
What about you?
What would happen if you let goof the things that are holding
you back?
What could your life look likeif you trusted yourself to move
forward, even if you don't knowexactly where the journey will
take you?

(08:17):
After that experience, I knew Ineeded to make a change, really
make a change Not just on thesurface, but deep down, and
that's when I developed what Icall the New Year, new you
formula for reversing diabetes.
This isn't just about diabetes,it's about transformation.
It's about transforming yourlife and it's about transforming

(08:41):
my life.
The first step was to decreaseinsulin.
Insulin resistance right, orhyperinsulinemia, was at the
heart, the core of diabetes, andI realized that the true value
and to truly heal, I needed toaddress that head on.

(09:03):
So I started making changes, really making changes, and
you've heard the pillars makingchanges to my diet,
incorporating fasting andfocusing on how my body
responded.
But let me ask you this when inyour life are you ignoring the

(09:23):
core issue?
What would happen if youaddressed it head on?
From the unknown?

(09:50):
It pushes us in a directionthat doesn't allow us to stay at
the fight, and so we circumventit, we move away, we move
beyond, we sidestep it insteadof hitting it head on.
Next, I had to learn to suppressmy appetite, not just physical
hunger, but that emotionalhunger.
I had to confront the reasons Iwas eating, not because I was

(10:12):
hungry, but because I wasstressed, I was bored, I was
anxious, I was depressed.
I was anxious for the future, Iwas worried about the present
and I was depressed about thepast.
So I started practicing mindfuleating.

(10:33):
I began asking myself beforeeach meal am I truly hungry or
am I feeding something else?
Am I feeding something else?
Am I eating because of habits, because of emotions, because of
access, because the food isright there, or because of taste
?
What are you feeding in yourlife?
Are there habits you'vedeveloped to cope with something

(10:56):
deeper?
What would happen if youstarted asking yourself why you
do what you do?
Why do I eat what I eat?
Why do I go where I go?
Finally, I had to reduce sugar, not just in my diet but in my
life.
Sugar was my comfort.

(11:17):
It was my go-to when thingsfelt overwhelming, but it was
also my crutch, and it was timeto let go.
What's your sugar?
What's the thing you turn tofor comfort, even though you
know it's holding you back?
What would your life look likeif you started replacing it with

(11:41):
something healthier, somethingthat truly nourishes you?
What would happen?
But here's the thing.
But here's the thing.
These changes weren't justphysical.
They required a complete frameshift, a complete change of mind
, a complete change in my heart.

(12:01):
For years, I saw myself as avictim of circumstance.
I blamed my genetics, my stressmy life situation.
But that day in the rapids, Irealized I had a choice.
I could continue to see myselfas a victim or I could start
seeing myself as a survivor, assomeone who could actually

(12:25):
actively shape my life.
What about you?
How do you see yourself?
Are you the victim of yourcircumstances?
Are you the victim of yourcircumstances or are you the
author of your story?
What would change if youstarted seeing challenges as
opportunities for growth ratherthan obstacles to be avoided?

(12:47):
This mindset shift was critical.
It allowed me to seeconnections between my physical
health, my mental health and myemotional well-being.
It's all connected and when youstart to shift when I started
to shift my perspective,everything changed.

(13:08):
What would happen if youreframed your challenges?
If you stop seeing them asobstacles but as opportunities
to learn and to grow, how wouldyour life be different?
Reversing my diabetes yeah, you've seen it.
You've watched me.

(13:28):
You've watched my weight godown.
You've watched me here in thisspace, share with you my A1C
down to 5.8.
You've seen the changes.
It wasn't just about thephysical changes.
It was about letting go of whatwas holding me back, embracing
a new way of thinking andcommitting to the journey every

(13:52):
single day.
But this isn't just my story,it's your story too.
You have the power to transformyour life.
You have the power to let go ofwhatever's holding you back and
to step into the life you'vealways wanted.
So I ask you, what's your nextstep?

(14:13):
What one thing can you let goof today to move closer to the
life you want?
What's one change you can makeright now to start your journey?
Remember, sometimes we must letgo to move forward, trusting

(14:35):
that the journey will lead us toa better, healthier place.
And so my journey of one year toreverse my diabetes started 25
years ago and just as I say, oras I have on my back of my cup,

(14:59):
I am now becoming the person Ithought I would be 20 years ago.
Oh yeah, so that is the crux ofNew Year New you, that is the
crux of new year, new you.
That is the catalyst, that isthe space from which new year,

(15:21):
new you comes, and it expands,it infuses, it gets better as
you incorporate it into yourlife, as you look at the things
that are going on.
We're talking about diabetes,we're talking about reversing
diabetes, but ultimately thiscan be applied to every area of

(15:44):
your life If you master it here,if you master it in this space,
then all the other spaces getbetter, all the other
relationships, all of the otherchallenges become opportunities

(16:07):
for learning, and I can't waitto see what happens when your
journey for one year takesflight.
This is Dr Dwayne Wood, that'sWood with an E the E stands for
endocrinology.
Here on the channel, I educate,I empower and I encourage you
to take charge of your health, take charge of your life, avoid

(16:28):
complications and go to the nextlevel, creating the life you
always wanted.
And for this year y'all, newYear, new Year, thank you.
